Getting you there
Itʼs a new year. What adventures will it bring? Where
will you travel throughout the
world? Will it be for business
… or pleasure … or both?
Wherever you plan to go in
2016, plan on the newly remodeled Albert J. Ellis Airport to
help get you there.
“Little details make a big
difference,” Albert J. Ellis Airport General Manager Chris
White is quick to point out.
“Our airport is close by. Our
airfares are competitive. And,
our smaller-sized airport is easy
to navigate.”
According to White, the
Albert J. Ellis Airport opened
on Valentinesʼ Day 1971. Since
then, the airport has expanded
six times (most recently in the
late-1980s) before the current
expansion, which began in
2013.
This $48 million Terminal
Area Redevelopment Program
has expanded passenger areas,
added space for additional
airlines and
concession areas ––––––––
and replaced the Spotlight
passenger termi- ––––––––
nal building with
a two-story, 67,000-square-foot
terminal, complete with passenger loading bridges. (No more
battling the elements on your
way to your plane!)
“The Albert J. Ellis Airport
is the ʻfront doorʼ to Onslow
County and our North Carolina
beaches,” White noted. “Actually, weʼre not just a county
airport, weʼre a regional airport.
Obviously, we have a large
number of military flying out of
our airport, but we also have a
high percentage of tourist travel, sometimes up to 50 percent.”
And Albert J. Ellis Airport
is self-sufficient, White emphasized. In other words, taxpayers are not left with the bills.
Most of the cost of this recent
expansion has been covered by
grants.
“This has been a huge infrastructure (improvement) with
very low costs, and we didnʼt
receive any local tax dollars,”
White explained. “That includes
the debt service. The airport
paid that back. We borrow the
money … we pay it back.”
So, as of 2012, the airport
supports 340 jobs. And the annual local impact of the airport
is $192 million per year. It also
generates $3.5 million in local
taxes per year.
“In other words, we put back
a lot more than we take,” White
summarized.
White encourages all air
travelers to remember Albert J.
Ellis as their first option when
planning a trip.
“Flying with us helps the
airport sustain itself and keeps
those 340 jobs for the locals,”
White said. “Itʼs important to
spend our dollars locally, and
that includes our airport. Buy
local, fly local. And itʼs more
convenient for the flyer. We
have lots of parking and 10-15
flights daily to Charlotte and At-
lanta.” Through these two airports, travelers are connected to
almost anywhere in the world.
Using another airport, such
as Raleigh, to save money often
doesnʼt add up to the savings a
traveler thinks he/she is getting,
according to White.
“You have to factor in the
travel time on the road to and
from the airport,” he said.
“Thatʼs 10 hours total of travel
time, plus the gas for your vehicle. Plus, depending on when
your flight leaves, you may
have to pay for a hotel room the
night before.”
And, by educating the public
to use the local airport, Albert J.
Ellis Airport will be more likely
to get direct flights as flight
travel increases.

The renovation also included
a new hangar building and an
executive terminal, which can
be used for corporate meetings,
flight schools and events. Facilities are also available for pilots
to rest between flights.
“This gives all the folks flying into our area a good first impression of our area,” he added.
Concessions are currently
available in the main terminal,
but White is looking for possible franchises to increase the
choices for travelers waiting for
flights.

area because I did my undergraduate at Duke and we really
liked the climate here,” Dr. Jeffrey Moore noted. “This seemed

Moore moved to Morehead City
and opened his first practice. In
2014, he expanded his practice
by opening an office in Cedar
Pointʼs newest medical building, teaming up with Dr. John
Spellman, also an orthopedic
surgeon.

Spellman and his wife fell in
love with the Swansboro areaʼs
mild weather and coastal charm.

“We have the same spectrum
of services as we do in our main
office in Morehead, just on a
smaller scale,” Dr. Moore ex-
plained. “And we have treated
a wide range of patients, from
newborns to the elderly. People
of all ages can suffer from orthopedic prob––––––––
lems.”

“There are many people
who donʼt understand exactly
what is involved with orthopedics and sports medicine,” Dr.
Moore noted. By definition,
orthopedics deals with muscular
and skeletal problems, whether
they are short- or long-term
problems. But these days, the
field of orthopedics has broadened to include sports medicine
(Dr. Spellmanʼs specialty) and a
wide variety of minimally invasive surgical technologies, such
as arthroscopy and robotics.
“For example, here we can
focus on non-operative care of
the shoulder, knee, hip, hand,
spine, etc.,” Dr. Moore clarified.
“There are lots of things we
can do short of surgery that are
very helpful. In fact, about 80
percent of what we offer is nonoperative solutions.
“When I trained, basically
everyone was a general orthopedist,” he continued. “These
days, everyone has a sub-specialty, like sports medicine or
adult reconstruction.”
Most problems can be
treated without surgery, using
such tools as physical and occupational therapy. Moore Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
of Cedar Point has an extensive
physical therapy program, including two fulltime physical
therapists on staff.

Owning a business is the
goal of many would-be entrepreneurs.
Being your own boss has
certain perks, including making
your own hours and not having
to report to anyone but yourself.
But owning a business is a
lot of work, especially for new
business owners trying to get
their businesses off the ground.
According to Bloomberg,
8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who
start businesses fail within 18
months of opening their doors.
The Small Business Association
indicates the numbers are not so
dire, saying 30 percent of new

years of operation; 50 percent

businesses, and so on. This, in
turn, helps grow other businesses in the community, making it
a nicer place to live and work.
Spread the word
Word-of-mouth advertising is effective. A respected
member of the community who
shares a good experience with
a local business may encourage
others to patronize the business. Speak up when you feel
a business owner has provided
an exceptional level of service.
Recommend a company to
friends and neighbors. You also
may want to review a business
via online rating websites.
Attend grand openings
Each community is unique,
and often the vibe of a community is defined by the businesses
that call that community home.
Attend grand openings to show
you are invested in the quality
and vitality of your community.
When others see a business
doing well, they may be more
inclined to shop there as well.
Apply for work
Another way to support a
local business is to work for
one. Small local businesses employ millions of people across
the country, and many foster
great working environments.
In addition, small businesses
are known for their customer
service, and employees often
become experts in their products and services because of the
hands-on experience they gain
while working for small businesses.
Supporting and celebrating
local businesses can instill a

at Mac Daddy’s

The Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerceʼs annual Christmas gathering, which
took place on Dec. 3 at Mac Daddyʼs in
Cape Carteret, had it all.
The party kicked off in the boutique
bowling area, decorated in ho-ho-holiday
style, complete with a very merry Santa
(popular with kids of all ages)! Members
along with their family and staff enjoyed a
great evening of bowling, delicious food and
fellowship.
Many thanks to all who attended, and to
the Mac Daddyʼs staff for such a fun and
festive way to welcome the holiday season!

Holiday cheer was in full
force for the Swansboro-area
veterans who attended a holiday dinner sponsored by the
Swansboro Area Chamber of
Commerceʼs Military Affairs
Committee Dec. 10.
Dinner was served at the
Hampton Inn and Suites.
More than 90 guests were
treated to a delicious holiday
meal served by members of
the MAC, which included Sgt.
Maj. Paul Berry, sergeant major
of Marine Corps Base Camp
Lejeune, Dr. Beth Barton, Dr.
Tina Siegel, Clayton Cottle,
Paula Webb, Tim Webb, Ashley
Adamovage, Fred Schachter

Many past attendees joined
us, along with quite a few new
faces. It was nice seeing everyone so involved in conversation
and enjoying one anotherʼs
