Issue #2 • September 2008 The Cougar Current Official Newsletter of the College of Charleston / Hissar Sailing Program Cougars Place Third at 2008 ICSA Team Race National Championship, Women Finish Fifth The 2008 college sailing season wrapped up in early June in Newport, RI with the three ICSA National Championships hosted by Brown University, Salve Regina, and the New York Yacht Club. Over the course of ten days, all three national championship titles were contested on the waters of Narragansett Bay off of Ft. Adams. Charleston was one of only 8 teams that qualified for all three national championships. the women’s squad rallied on the final Championship. This event proved to day and finished 5th in A division and be the most competitive ICSA National 5th in B division, each with 125 points, Championship ever held due to the new semi-final format. (In late April, for an overall finish of 5th. Next up was the Team Racing 36 teams from around the country Nationals, which saw many different selected using the traditional district wind conditions. The co-ed team was in a rebuilding phase after graduating its top two skippers in 2007. But the team rose to the challenge, led by seniors Chris Lash and Megan Riddle. With the return of Britney Haas from a semester abroad and the addition of Bryan Rigby, a transfer from Navy, in the spring, the team race squad worked hard to develop and improve as a team. Their perseverance paid off with an impressive 2nd place finish at the Southern New England Team Race Intersectional and a 3rd place finish at the ICSA Team Race Nationals. On the fleet racing side, the co-ed team also showed Congratulations to our 2008 All-Americans!! Allie Blecher, ‘10 Women’s All-American Shannon Heausler, ‘10 Women’s Honorable Mention Chris Lash, ‘08 Co-ed All-American Nick Martin, ‘10 Co-ed Honorable Mention Dani Neri, ‘08 All-American Crew Megan Riddle, ‘08 All-American Crew tremendous talent, finishing 4th at the ICSA National Championship Western Semi-Final and 7th in the deepest fleet ever seen at the ICSA National Championship. We will certainly miss the leadership of Chris and Megan, but the experience gained last year will help us in our preparation for the 2008-’09 season. On the women’s side, the Cougars had an incredibly strong spring semester with top 3 finishes at the Charleston, St. Mary’s and Dellenbaugh Women’s Intersectionals and an impressive 3rd place finish at the co-ed St. Francis Invitational in San Francisco, CA (site of the 2009 ICSA National Championships). The nationals proved to be the most challenging event of the season, and after a tough regatta, a last-day rally pulled the women up to 5th. They’ll certainly be looking to improve on that this year. While the Cougars will surely miss the leadership of team captain and All-American crew Dani Neri, The Cougar Current The official newsletter of the College of Charleston / Hissar Sailing Program College of Charleston Sailing 30 George Street, Charleston, SC 29401 843-953-8252, Fax 843-953-6733 www.cofc.edu/sailing J. We are all looking forward to what should prove to be another great season for the Cougar women. As we look forward to 2008-09, we’ll be welcoming back many sailors and bringing in some new talent from many parts of the country (see our Fall Schedule and Roster on p. 9-10). The team will immediately begin preparing for the Fall singlehanded qualifiers. We hope to qualify both men’s and women’s sailors for the 2008 Singlehanded National Championships, which will be hosted by Cornell in late October. We will also be working hard to get in top physical shape and improve our FJ sailing in preparation for what will surely be a demanding 2009 Nationals on San Francisco Bay. Go Cougars!! Eight teams competed in the event. On Saturday there were great team racing conditions in the morning and the breeze built from the west/southwest throughout the afternoon. However, the strong current on Saturday made starting difficult for all boats on the line. Chris Lash, ‘08, Britney Haas, ‘09, Nick Martin, ‘10, Megan Riddle, ‘08, Bryan Rigby, ‘10, and Katie Weaver, ‘10 sailed most of the day with Manton Paine, ‘09 and Erin Markee, ‘10 switching in. On Sunday the breeze was from the east/northeast with shifty challenging team racing conditions. Sunday was a bit colder, but the other teams welcomed the warm weather. Throughout the event we improved as a team on starts and communication off the line. Charleston sailed a good regatta Steve Barbano, ‘11, and Erin Markee, ‘10, at practice in Charleston this spring 4 The Cougar Current at home finishing third after winning a protest against Georgetown. Old South Intersectional by Cristy Jamison CofC was one of the many teams “shaking it up Old South style” February 23-24. Coach Ward Cromwell and five sailors headed down to the Old South Regatta at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Gold Cup courses were sailed on Lake Wauburg and the shifty conditions proved challenging. The wind was zero to eight knots both days and was very shifty. It was difficult at first to read the wind; however, all sailors managed to improve their light wind boat handling race by race. The weather was beautiful with a high of 78 on both Saturday and Sunday. Overall, Charleston took the lead by thirteen points. Cole Allsopp, ‘11 and Cristy Jamison, ‘11 won A Division. Andrew Zuber, ‘11 and Liz Miller, ‘09 placed 3rd in B Division. And Luke O’Neill, ‘10 was 2nd in C Division. Some of the competition at the Old South included Eckerd, FSU, and Clemson. Overall it was a fun regatta to attend and it was good practice for lake sailing and light wind conditions! tional. Sailing A division for the Cougars were Shannon Heausler, ‘10 and Dani Neri, ‘08. Sailing B division were “Laser Luke” O’Neill, ‘10, at the Old South Intersectional in Gainesville, FL Allie Blecher, ‘10 and crews Christina Murray, ‘10 and Hanna Watt, ‘11. The weather was beautiful for the first weekend in March. On Saturday, with air temperatures in the 70’s, the breeze was west all day with the course close to the Yorktown. The day started with a strong, steady breeze between 10-15 knots, but died down toward the end of the day to a shifty 5-10 knots. Prior to a 20 point scoring penalty in each division for failing to sign the RP forms, the Cougars won the event by 25 points over Georgetown. Shannon and Dani were 3rd in A and Allie, Christina and Hanna won B by 32 points over St. Mary’s. With such an exciting end to their weekend and start to their season, the Cougars look forward to the season. Thanks to CofC alums Anne Bowen, Suzy Lintern, David Dabney, Russ O’Reilly, Brendan Healy and Katie Hughes for helping out over the weekend. first set with two fifth place finishes but then had two deeper finishes and finished the day with a sixth. Andrew and Erin dominated the day with all top five finishes. On Sunday the racing was able to start early because the breeze was a steady 10 knots from the NE. The breeze held for the remainder of the day and both divisions were able to complete another six races on windward-leeward courses. The Cougars finished the regatta in 5th place with Kathryn and Emily 5th in A division and Andrew and Erin finishing 1st in B division. The fleet on the starting line at the Charleston Women’s Intersectional Eckerd Intersectional by Kathryn Metscher Jackson/Hall Team Race by Steve Barbano It was a sunny weekend down in St. Petersburg, FL for the Eckerd Intersectional. Kathryn Metscher, ‘10 and Emily Simon, ‘10 sailed in A division and Andrew Zuber, ‘11 and Erin Markee, ‘10 sailed in B division. On Saturday the races got off to a slow start with a light easterly for the first couple races in A Division. The easterly died and the sailors waited two hours for the sea breeze to fill back in for the B Division races. Once the breeze picked back up to about 8-10 knots we completed three sets (6 races) for both divisions. The courses were windwardleewards and gold cups. Kathryn and Emily started off the day with a solid The John Johnson / Graham Hall Team Race regatta was co-hosted by Georgetown University and the Naval Academy on March 1-2. The Cougars team consisted of Coach Nick Ewenson and sailors, Chris Lash, ‘08, Brittany Haas, ‘09, Nick Martin, ‘10, Megan Riddle, ‘08, Bryan Rigby, ‘10, Katie Weaver, ‘10, and Steve Barbano, ‘11. This was a great group to travel with, and because we have such a solid team unity, our spirits were high coming into the event. Also, the team’s music playlist got us pumped and ready to go each morning. We were scheduled to sail at Georgetown on Saturday, with the first day’s results determining where we would sail on Sunday. The first day of the regatta the conditions were not appealing and very hard to sail in because it was very cold (everyone was wearing drysuits), very windy, and extremely shifty. After a few good races, we switched up crews to keep momentum going with fresh legs and energy. Steve sailed with Bryan, while Brittany and Katie switched off crewing for Chris, and Megan stayed with Nick. It was a long day, consisting of many capsized boats and tired sailors on every team. Although Saturday was more like survival conditions than team racing, we finished it off strong with high hopes for Sunday. Our results on Saturday qualified us for the top group and kept us at Georgetown for Sunday’s racing. The second day of the regatta had very different conditions. It was still cold and shifty, but with a lot less breeze. At times the water looked like glass, but the regatta pushed on with breeze dying then filling in from the opposite direction. The pairs were Bryan and Katie, Chris and Brittany, and Nick and Megan. Steve skippered for one race on Sunday with Brittany, but for most of the day was an unutilized ‘heavy’ and provided great team support. Conditions were challenging with the ever-changing directions of wind. A lot of the time the boats were drifting, making it near impossible to sail. Even with the unforgiving conditions, the Cougars were able to stay composed, finishing off the regatta in fourth place. There were a lot of competitive teams at the event and we sailed very well against them. We had a lot of fun and learned a lot traveling to such a “stacked” event. Overall, it was a solid showing for the College of Charleston. Navy Women’s Spring by Shannon Heausler After three attempts, we finally got a start off in the foggy conditions of the Chesapeake Bay for the Navy Women’s Spring Intersectional. The fog finally lifted enough so we could see the windward mark, but the velocity was Fall 2008 5 still very unstable. Consistency proved to be difficult for everyone because of the huge shifts and puffy conditions. Sailing for the Cougars were Allie Bleecher, ‘10, Christina Murray, ‘10, Shannon Heausler, ‘10, Hannah Watt, ‘11, and team captain Dani Neri, ‘08. Racing continued until we encountered what we now refer to as “the wall” of wind that took out the majority of the 36 FJ’s and 420’s on the course. Competition completely stopped as every boat on the course struggled to stay upright in the close to 40 knot gusts. Luckily the Cougars made it in safely through the carnage and every team pulled together to help get swamped boats into the harbor. In spite of our efforts, staring out at the graveyard of over twenty white centerboards in the river and boats drifting onto the far shoreline made us wish there was more we could do to help the struggling regatta staff. After the damage was assessed the next morning we went sailing in tem- soup and hot chocolate. Thanks to the with the Cougars at an even .500. But anyone who thought she was done with college sailing at that point was sorely mistaken. O’Reilly went on to coach the perennial Cougar-rival Georgetown Hoyas. In her two seasons as the assistant coach at Georgetown, O’Reilly’s team has won the 2008 ICSA Dinghy National Championship and has produced seven All-Americans and one College Sailor of the Year. This year’s victory at the dinghy nationals was particularly impressive as it was the first year the championship was contested using the new semi-final format, which ensured that the best teams in the country were represented. The winning Hoyas squad posted an average finish position of 7th and still bested second place finisher Boston College by 31 points, which demonstrates the depth of the championship fleet. But it isn’t all business on the water for O’Reilly. She’s kept her sailing skills sharp by competing on her own admittedly ‘chill’ program. This past summer she again represented the Cougars by winning the ICSA Afterguard Regatta at New York Yacht Club. And her team racing team competed in the Charles River Open hosted by MIT in Boston, MA and won the Chix Only Team Race hosted by Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI. In September she’ll step up her program a notch when she makes the trip to Irleand to compete in the Laser SB3 World Championship with an all-women’s team. The McLaren-sponsored team includes 2008 Quantum Women’s Sailor of the Year Kaity Stork (Tufts ,’08), and All-American Crews Lindsey Gibbons-Neff (Tufts ,’08) and Emily Flint (Boston College, ’08). When she’s not sailing, coaching or cruising the I-95 corridor to and from regattas every weekend (a pastime she recalls fondly from her days at CofC), O’Reilly enjoys traveling to St. Thomas, USVI to visit her brother Russ, ‘07 and relaxing in Nantucket over the summer.
