As I reflect upon the graduating Class of 2016, I am
reminded of how quickly life changes. Four short years
ago, these graduates were freshmen. Some of whom
were enrolled in my class. As I made my transition into
administration, these graduates were transitioning through
the high school grades. It’s amazing how long four years
seem when they are ahead of you and how quickly they’ve
passed when behind. What once caused worry for a
freshman seems like an inconsequential issue to a senior.
The voyage each graduate has chosen will certainly have
its challenges and struggles. As the graduates from the
Class of 2016 go off into the world whether it be college, the
workplace, or the armed forces, I urge them to embrace the
change and find value in the challenges. For strength comes
through struggle and wisdom comes through experience.
As we say goodbye to our graduates, we do so with our
eyes continually looking toward the future. Our preparation
begins with an assessment of the successes and failures of
the previous school year. At the high school we are eager to
welcome the incoming freshman who will be the graduating Class of 2020. We are also excited to
plan a fun-filled year of excitement and worthwhile experiences for our rising seniors of the Class of
2017. Before we all know it, the next school year will be upon us.
I would like to thank the countless number of parents, volunteers, and community partners
who have assisted, donated, and participated in the infinite number of projects and initiatives led by
Maumee High School students. I also want to urge everyone to take time this summer to recharge
their minds and bodies. Spend time with those who are most important to you. Before you know it,
we will all be back for a fabulous ‘16 - ‘17 School Year. HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!

Receive Chamber of
Commerce Scholarships

Building Champions for 70 Years
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) members from Maumee High School
learned leadership skills, attended general sessions, and competed in different events while attending the
2016 Ohio FCCLA State Leadership Conference on April 28-29 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.
The state conference gave members the opportunity to compete in STAR Events (Students Taking
Action with Recognition) that required members to use skills learned in Family and Consumer Sciences
courses. Senior Melinda Schneider competed in Interior Design, receiving a gold rating and placing 2nd in
the state. For the Interior Design competition Melinda had to design interiors that meet the living space needs
of clients. This included creating a floor plan, an elevation and a furniture/ interior plan. Freshman Delaney
Cleghorn competed in Fashion Construction, receiving a silver rating and placing 2nd in the state. For the
Fashion Construction competition Delaney had to create a garment using at least eight fashion construction
techniques. Cameron Roberts competed in Fashion Design, receiving a silver rating and placing 3rd in the
state. For the Fashion Design competition Cameron had to design and market clothing styles including
design basics, fabric choice, and pricing. Melinda and Delaney qualified in their STAR Events for the National
Leadership Conference this summer in San Diego, California. Maumee High School FCCLA Advisor Christina
Jackson was also recognized on stage as a retiring member of the Ohio FCCLA Board of Directors.
Maumee High School FCCLA members also contributed to the National FCCLA Outreach Project:
Lead2Feed by participating in Meals of Hope, which is an organization whose mission is to alleviate
hunger utilizing a hands on approach where volunteers come together to assemble highly nutritious meals.
Maumee High School FCCLA members helped to package 70,000 meals which will be donated to the MidOhio Food Bank.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national student
organization that helps young men and women become leaders and addresses important personal, family,
work, and social issues through Family & Consumer Sciences and related Career and Technical Education
programs. The organization has involved over ten million youth since its founding in 1945. FCCLA is unique
among youth organizations because it is the only national in-school organization with the family as its
central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong
leaders in their families, careers, and communities.

Financial Aid Applications Earlier Next Year!
Beginning with seniors in the class of 2017, the window to file the FAFSA will open on October 1st,
2016. The FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid is normally filed each year beginning January
1st. This change will affect the 2017 senior class as well as any older students who are currently enrolled in
college. Students and parents will file the FAFSA using their 2015 tax forms. A financial aid night will be held
on Monday, Sept. 19th at 7:00 pm in the PAC. A representative from the Bowling Green State University
Financial Aid Office will review the new FAFSA application requirements and answer any questions you
may have regarding federal student aid. Please plan to attend this important meeting.

TESTING
Testing for Next Year’s Seniors!
Seniors will be taking tests this summer and early fall for college admission and scholarship
eligibility. Students may take the ACT and/or the SAT depending on the university they plan to
attend. The preferred test in Ohio is the ACT but some east and west coast schools prefer the
SAT. Check with the school of your choice if you are in doubt as to which test is right for you.
When registering for the ACT test, you will be asked whether you
wish to take standard ACT or the ACT plus writing. It is recommended
that each student take the ACT plus writing test one time as some schools

PSAT Test to be Offered Next Fall
Each year, Maumee High School offers the PSAT test for high achieving sophomores and
juniors. This test is a practice test for the SAT test that some students will choose to take in their
junior or senior year for college admission and scholarship consideration. This test is also the
qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. Only the top one half of one percent of juniors
around the country will qualify for this top honor. Each year, Maumee High School has several
students who receive this honor along with others recognized as Commended Scholars.
Registration for this test will be in September 2016. The test will be given on Wednesday,
October 19 th at Maumee High School.

After-Prom Event Possible with Community’s Support
The 2016 Maumee High School After Prom Committee would like to thank these businesses and individuals for supporting
this annual event. Close to 250 students attended the supervised drug and alcohol-free event at the University of Toledo Recreation

Sports Participants and
Families New Online Registration
Available this Summer
If your kids are involved in athletic programs,
you know the routine ... schedule an appointment
with your family physician for an athletic physical,
begin setting up dates in your home calendar, attend
sports meetings, pay for spirit packs and the annual
participation fees, etc.
We are trying to make things a little easier on
you! Instead of having a mandatory pre-season
meeting in late July, the MHS Athletic Department
is utilizing Registration Manager thru our website,
maumeepanthers.org. Signing up for sports has never
been easier! Mobile-friendly for busy parents in our
community, VNN’s paperless registration will help us
manage athletes, collect payments, auto-create rosters
on our website, and stay compliant with district and
safety regulations through eSignature and document
upload technology.
Your son/daughter’s coaches will still schedule
a sport-specific meeting, but you will not need to
sit through a general session. All online registration
documents and activities must be completed before a
student-athlete can be eligible for participation.
Softball Team Advances To
Division II “Elite Eight”
Congratulations to the MHS softball team on
advancing to the OHSAA Division II ‘Elite Eight’ with
their Regional Semifinal win over Bellevue, 13-6, on
May 26th at Bucyrus High School. The team played
in the Regional Championship on May 29th against
Keystone High School and lost to a good team loaded
with Division I talent, 11-0. The seniors on this year’s
team finished their freshman year as District RunnersUps, sophomore year as Regional Runners-Up,
junior year as District Runners-Up and senior year as
Regional Runners-Up with 79 wins. Not a bad career!

All-Sports Passes On Sale Beginning August 16th
Maumee High School will be selling All-Sports passes during registration for fall classes, which
will take place August 16 and 17. A family pass is only $250 and includes entry for two adults and up
to three children - - considering that each athletic event is $7 for adults and $5 for a student, that’s a
great bargain! Student passes are only $65! The passes are good for all home high school (9-12) events,
excluding Northern Lakes League, Northwest District Athletic Board, Ohio High School Athletic Association
tournaments, middle school and/or youth events the high school may be hosting. The Northern Lakes
League will be charging admission for spring sports beginning with the 2017 season ... this includes
baseball, softball and track.

Football Pre-Sale Reserved Seats
Maumee High School will be selling football pre-sale reserved seat tickets in early August so make
sure to stop by during registration August 16 and 17 and reserve your seat at Kazmaier Stadium! We host
five games this year - the Athletic Boosters are busy planning a tailgate cookout prior to the game vs. Waite
on September 2nd, so be sure to stop by and pick up a burger or hot dog for a few dollars and then sit in
your reserved seat with a new chairback from the Boosters! We anticipate the tickets going fast this year
so please plan ahead.
Kazmaier Scholarship Winners
Congratulations to the 2016 Kazmaier Scholarship winners! Jacob Buck, Jacob Diegel, Elliott
Frankhouse, Skyler Graham and Jacob Frank will each be receiving $1,000 toward their college education.
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum of one varsity letter earned across all sports.
They must also submit an essay and include three letters of reference.

Summer Sports Conditioning Calendar of Events
Parents, if your son/daughter participates in a school-sponsored athletic program, please read on!
The calendar of summer sports activities is now available for student-athletes and parents. All
activities are voluntary ... open gyms, weight room attendance, camps, shootouts, leagues, etc. You can
view all activities or just copy the ones that you are interested in to your personal family calendar - simply
go to maumeepanthers.org and click on “Panther HQ” and then “Open Gym & Weight Room Schedule”.
