These National Championships are our biggest national tournament and have a long history in showcasing our nation’s best Futsal talent for boys and girls, men and women as well as Athletes with a Disability. Last year, FFA launched the Whole of Football Plan which is the 20-year blueprint to make football the largest and most popular sport in Australia. In the Whole of Football Plan, Futsal is specifcally identified as a component to not only introduce and develop footballers, but to also provide an elite pathway for outstanding players to eventually represent Australia on the international stage. Since our admission into the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 2006, the number of opportunities for international Futsal competitions has increased markedly with regular club and national team fixtures in the AFC competition calendar. In closing, I would like to thank our partners, Hyundai, Foxtel, Westfield and the Australian Sports Commission for their support. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Football NSW for once again hosting the tournament this year. Finally, best wishes to all players, coaches and match officials for the coming week. I trust that the tournament is highly competitive, entertaining and successful and played within the spirit of fair play and respect for all. David Gallop Chief Executive Officer Football Federation Australia www.footballaustralia.com.au 3 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW By Russ Gibbs Futsal is back on the agenda as Sydney gears up once more for the 2016 edition of the FFA National Futsal Championships. Last year saw the competition return to the Harbour City with thrills and spills galore and the 37th edition of the national competition promises much more of the same. With the promise of a Grand Final at the breathtaking Sydney Olympic Park at the culmination of the week’s action, expect plenty of fast-paced skills to be on display at all age-groups. The FFA National Futsal Championship brings together some of the best junior talent in Australia for five days of fast-paced, goal-laden quality futsal that promises to light up the courts of Sydney’s indoor venues and provide the competitors, officials and spectators with memories to last a lifetime. These squads have been preparing for this competition for a long time and are prepared to showcase their quality to the nation. The popularity of the indoor game is growing exponentially year on year with thousands of dedicated Futsal lovers taking to the courts of Australia to dig up a new trick, score a fantastic goal and improve their overall game whilst having a bucketful of fun. For Futsal allows players to experience different positions, get more touches of the ball and keep anaerobically fit, in a safe environment. It’s the sport of choice for many football-playing nations with the skills of the South Americans, Brazil and Argentina in particular, and their cousins from the European nations such as Span and Portugal, a stark reminder of just how important Futsal can be in the upbringing and development of athletes at the highest level. Many worldclass superstars can testify to the impact that Futsal has had on their progress to the elite level of the game and it’s a message that is being conveyed throughout our land. This week’s events not only allow the players a potential shop-window for their skills, it will also enable them to grow as individuals off the court. Spending a week away from home for many of these youngsters, at such a tender age, will be a life altering experience and will help to shape them for the future. The parents, coaches and associations that support this event are to be applauded for their efforts and energy in making it all happen. Make sure you show your appreciation of the players in the right way throughout the week. 2015 saw NSW Metro dominate the medal tally at the end of the week claiming eleven of the potential thirteen titles on offer. Whilst there is no doubt that the host Federation will rack up a few more trophies to add to their burgeoning collection twelve months on, the other states present bring a formidable array of talent to attempt to end the monopoly on the silverware of Thunder and Lighting. So strap yourself in and prepare for action aplenty. There will be goals, there will be skills, there will be cheers and there will be tears. For this is the FFA National Futsal Championships. Welcome aboard! Keep up to date with all the latest results and ladders throughout the 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships by logging on to the official website at nationalfutsalchampionships.com.au Results will be updated daily and news reports will be featured prominently. 4 www.footballaustralia.com.au 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships 2015 Roll of Honour Age Group U12 Girls U14 Girls U16 Girls Youth Women (U19) U23 Women Open AWD Mixed U12 Boys U13 Boys U14 Boys U15 Boys U16 Boys Youth Men (U19) U23 Men Champion NSW Metro – Thunder NSW Metro – Thunder NSW Metro - Lightning NSW Metro NSW Metro – Thunder Queensland Metro NSW Metro – Thunder NSW Metro – Thunder NSW Metro NSW Metro – Thunder NSW Metro – Thunder Boomerangs FS Blue NSW Metro Runner up Victoria Adelaide Force NSW Metro – Thunder Boomerangs FS NSW Metro - Lightning NSW Metro - Lightning Victoria Metro Queensland Metro Victoria Metro NSW Metro - Lightning NSW Metro - Lightning NSW Metro - Thunder Victoria MVP of the Final Courtney Nevin (NSW Metro – Thunder) Karly Vouros (NSW Metro – Thunder) Indianna Asimus (NSW Metro – Lightning) Alexia Guerinoni (NSW Metro) Laura Donnelly (NSW Metro – Thunder) Brenton Heslehurst (Queensland Metro) Ryan Teague (NSW Metro – Thunder) Marco Tilio (NSW Metro – Thunder) Nikita Parkes (NSW Metro) Conor Quilligan (NSW Metro – Thunder) Jacob Basden (NSW Metro – Thunder) Jake Wilsener (Boomerangs FS Blue) Brian Griffin-Colls (NSW Metro) 2015 FFA National Futsal Championships - Full Results U12 Boys: NSW Metro Thunder 5 (Ryan Teague (2), Gene Marantos, George Antonis, Scott Browning) Victoria Metro 2 (Dennis Menelaou, Nicholas Kyrankis) U12 Girls: NSW Metro Thunder 7 (Julia Vignes (3), Courtney Nevin (2), Annabella Daczko, Isabella Volkanovski) Victoria Metro 0 U13 Boys: NSW Metro Thunder 5 (Marco Tilio (2), Yousef Sawalha, Rocco Chisari, own goal) Queensland Metro 2 (Josh Dearn, Ethan Wildermuth) U14 Boys: NSW Metro 2 (Nikita Parkes, Tallon Zahra) Victoria Metro 2 (Nicholas Vassiliou, Christos Ghenes-Lambiris) – NSW win 3-1 on penalties U14 Girls: NSW Metro Thunder 7 (Karly Vouros (5), Bethany Gordon, Olivia Robinson) Adelaide Force 0 U15 Boys: NSW Metro Lightning 1 (Cristian Berrios) NSW Metro Thunder 4 (Joshua Bartolotto (2), Conor Quilligan, Dillan Kahale) U16 Boys: NSW Metro Thunder 4 (Jacob Basden (2), Anthony Haddad, Jordan Pyne) NSW Metro Lightning 2 (Michael Kotzambasis, Ahmad Safdari) U16 Girls : NSW Metro Thunder 2 (Cassidy Chidgey, Georgia Koutzoumis) NSW Netro Lightning 3 (Danika Matos, Indianna Asimus, Stephanie Cortes) Youth Men (U19): Boomerangs FS 4 (Thomas Zeitlhofer, Ben Basser-Silk, Jake Wilsener (2)) NSW Metro Thunder 2 (Robert Perre, Rodney Lewin) Youth Women (U19): NSW Metro 1 (Natalie Penman) Boomerangs FS 0 U23 Women: NSW Metro Thunder 0 NSW Metro Lightning 0 – Thunder win 3-2 on penalties) U23 Men: NSW Metro 4 (Dylan Basger, Jordan Guerreiro, Brian Griffin-Colls, Nathan Amore) Victoria 0 Open AWD Mixed Queensland Metro 3 (Brenton Heslehurst, Justin Mykkeltvedt, Trent Warner) NSW Metro Lightning 0 www.footballaustralia.com.au 5 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships Venue Maps Valentine Sports Park, 235-257 Meurants Lane, Glenwood Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre, Herbert Street, Cambridge Park 6 www.footballaustralia.com.au 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships Venue Maps Dural Sport and Leisure Centre, 1 Pellitt Lane, Dural Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, Olympic Boulevard, Sydney Olympic Park www.footballaustralia.com.au 7 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships NATIONAL FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – 2015 RETROSPECTIVE By Russ Gibbs New South Wales underlined their supremacy at the 2015 FFA National Futsal Championships by claiming eleven of the thirteen titles available as the competition returned to Sydney after a hiatus in Canberra. The tournament certainly lived up to its pre-competition billing with a week of explosive action on the courts culminating in an epic Grand Final day at the iconic Sydney Olympic Park. Playing under three different guises during the tournament, NSW fielded teams as Metro Thunder and Lightning in most age groups with a combined Metro team taking to the court in the flagship Male under-23 division. Playing Victoria in the Grand Final, Metro showcased their dominance to the crowd with an emphatic 4-0 victory underlining an impressive week. Goals from Dylan Basger and Jordan Guerreiro had them in control before the break and despite a Victoria resurgence, a third from Brian Griffin-Colls killed off the Victorian resistance. Nathan Amore wrapped it all up late on. In the Women’s division the climax to the competition was much tighter as NSW Metro Thunder and NSW Metro Lightning met. With the players well aware of each other’s individual ability the match was a tight and tense affair throughout and, by the end of the forty minutes plus extra time, remained score-less. It was left to Laura Donnelly to slot the winning spot-kick as Thunder took the honours 3-2 in the shoot-out. At Youth (under-19) level Boomerangs FS, from the ACT, came out on top in the Final with a 4-2 success over NSW Metro Thunder in one of the games of the tournament. Robert Perre gave the hosts an early lead before Thomas Zeitlhofer equalised for the Boomerangs. At half-time it was anyone’s game before Ben Basser-Silk put Boomerangs ahead with eight minutes to play. Thunder weren’t done and drew level through Rodney Lewin only for a late brace from Jake Wilsener to send the trophy to Canberra. A solitary goal scored in the opening seven minutes by Natalie Penman gave NSW Metro a 1-0 win over Boomerangs FS in the Youth (under-19) Female Final. Penman’s goal meant that the ACT representatives were left chasing the game and, try as they might, they were unable to find a way past a NSW defence that was in superb form. Boomerangs were surprise finalists having finished fourth on the ladder, but gave their all in a wonderful advertisement for the game. Traditional powerhouse Queensland Metro overcame a topsy-turvy week to claim victory in the AWD (Open Mixed) competition as they defeated NSW Metro Lightning 3-0 to claim the silverware. Both these teams had caused a shock in the semi-final knocking over the first and second placed NSW Metro Thunder and ACT to reach this stage. Goals from Brenton Heslehurst, Justin Mykkeltvedt and Trent Warner sent the team from the Sunshine State back north happy in this ‘origin’ clash. 8 www.footballaustralia.com.au 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships There was a New South Wales double at under-16 level with Thunder and Lightning claiming victories in the Male and Female categories respectively. A winner from Stephanie Cortes was the difference in a five-goal thriller in the Female division as Lightning saw off their Thunder peers, 3-2. Cortes struck with eight minutes left to settle the contest after goals from Cassidy Chidgey and Georgia Koutzoumis had given Thunder a 2-1 lead overturning the opener scored by Lightning’s Danika Matos. Indianna Asimus restored parity for Lightning setting the stage for Cortes’ match-winner. The Male competition was just as close as Thunder defeated Lightning 4-2. Jacob Basden put Thunder ahead with the first of a brace of goals only for Michael Kotzambasis to square the ledger in the thirteenth minute. Anthony Haddad put Thunder back in front in the second half but it was a short-lived lead as Ahmad Safdari made it 2-2 only minutes later. Thunder finished strongly however and Basden’s second gave them a priceless advantage that was confirmed when Jordan Pyne made it 4-2 with time running out. It was NSW Metro Thunder all the way in the under-15 Male competition as they defeated NSW Metro Lightning 4-1 in the Grand Final. A brace from Joshua Bartolotto added to by goals from Conor Quigley and Dillan Kahale emphasised Thunder’s superiority with Cristian Berrios goal a consolation for Lightning. It was a similar tale in the Female under-14 division as NSW Metro Thunder, led by a five-goal haul from Karly Vouros, hammered luckless Adelaide Force 7-0. Bethany Gordon and Olivia Robinson added to Vouros’ nap-hand. In the Male division a penalty shoot-out was required for NSW Metro to defeat Victoria Metro after a 2-2 draw. Nikita Parkes and Tallon Zahra dragged NSW level on two occasions after goals from Nicholas Vassiliou and Christos Ghenes-Lambiris had threatened to send the trophy to Victoria. Earlier in the day the always competitive junior age-grade divisions threw up a trio of intriguing fixtures with, ultimately, NSW Metro Thunder kicking off the Grand Final showpiece occasion with back-to-back hat-trick of wins. The Male under-13 event saw Thunder down Queensland Metro 5-2 in a thrilling match. A double from Marco Tilio, plus goals from Yousef Sawalha, Rocco Chisari and an own goal saw Thunder to the win with Josh Dearn and Ethan Wildermuth netting for Queensland. The under-12 Female competition finale was a showcase in NSW Metro Thunder dominance as they hammered Victoria Metro 7-0 with Julia Vignes leading the way with a hat-trick. Courtney Nevin scored twice and was joined amongst the goals by Annabelle Daczko and Isabella Volkanovski. The under-12 Males were equally as strong in their 5-2 success over Victoria Metro for whom Dennis Menelaou and Nicholas Kyrankis netted. Ryan Teague scored twice and with Gene Marantos, George Antonis and Scott Browning also finding a way past the Victorian ‘keeper, Thunder roared to victory to set the tone for the day. www.footballaustralia.com.au 9 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships Competing Teams - Squad Lists U12 Boys - ACT Boomerangs Blue 9. Powerchair football is a modified version of soccer specifically designed for athletes who use powered wheelchairs for everyday mobility. Played on a basketball court with an oversized ball, teams of four attack, defend and spin kick as they aim to score that winning goal. Introduction to the A-league Championship A-league clubs have been keen to support powerchair football, with all four New South Wales-based clubs – Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets, Western Sydney Wanderers and Central Coast Mariners – very happy to support the sport. With growth nationally, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City FC have also embraced the sport. The inaugural A-league Powerchair Football Championship will give us the chance to see who the top club team in Australia is. Our goal is to eventually have all A-league clubs supporting a powerchair football team. Results for 2015 Nationally, New South Wales won back their Australian title from Queensland in the APFA National Championships in October. The final went down to the wire, with scored locked at 3-all after extra time. New South Wales eventually won the penalty shootout 4-3. The local competition in New South Wales saw Sydney FC crowned league champions on the final day of the season with a victory over the Newcastle Jets. But the Jets got one back over the sky blues after winning the cup final over their rivals in extra time. It’s a date that will live in the memory of Australian Futsal fans for eternity. The night that the Futsalroos really announced themselves on the World stage. The 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand had begun with a disappointing 1-9 loss to Italy which meant that the second pool match with Mexico at the Nimibutr Indoor Stadium was a must win. Goals from Tobias Seeto, Aaron Cimitle and skipper Greg Giovenali secured a 3-1 win in front of the worldwide TV cameras and showed the global audience that we could play this game too. A lot has happened since that sticky evening in the Thai capital, not least the resignation of Head Coach Steven Knight. The succession plan was, however, fairly simple. Enter Rob Varela, assistant coach for the FIFA Futsal World Cup campaign and now promoted to the lead role at the Futsalroos. “Since the World Cup we have taken part in the 2013 OFC Invitational tournament and Trans-Tasman Cup both of which we won, have been runners up to Thailand in the AFF Championship, and in the AFC Championship in Vietnam we reached the Quarter Finals, this was the last tournament where Steven Knight was in charge,” Varela recalls when asked what’s been happening with the Futsalroos. “Since then we were once again winners of the Trans-Tasman Cup in 2014 and runners up to our nemesis Thailand in the 2014 AFF Championship. In July 2015 we retained the Trans-Tasman Cup and added the inaugural Commonwealth Cup.” It’s been a busy time for the new man at the helm as he prepares his charges for the arduous qualifying campaign that is in place for the next FIFA Futsal World Cup to be held in Colombia later in 2016. “It is a long process which began with the trip to New Zealand in July last year followed by the AFF tournament which serves as a qualifier to the AFC Championship in February which is the qualifying tournament for the 2016 World Cup,” Varela confirmed. “We are under no illusions of how difficult a task it will be with many Asian countries making great progress and becoming genuine contenders for the spots available. All this goes to emphasise the magnitude of the achievement of the 2012 team under Steve’s coaching. “We want to work our way through the relative qualifying tournaments to reach the ultimate goal; it would be very nice to pick up some trophies along the way but making our way along the tournaments is where our focus will be primarily.” With that ultimate goal in sight the growth of the indoor game in this country has certainly been a help for Varela in identifying talented players, particularly the burgeoning F-League and, of course, the FFA National Futsal Championship. “The F-League has been beneficial from the point of view that it gives players the opportunity to play under stopclock conditions, which is something that does not happen in the state based competitions,” Varela informed us. “Also it gives them experience in travelling interstate and playing under different set ups than those they are familiar with and obviously it exposes many more players to a higher level of competition all year round. 20 www.footballaustralia.com.au 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships There are many talented players playing in the competition, in fact there are too many to single out, especially the younger ones and it would be unfair to mention names. We have made a point of letting the relevant players know that their good performances have been noticed. “With this in mind the FFA National Futsal Championship plays a very important role from the perspective of “refreshing’ the squad since U19’s is now the oldest age group involved. There were a few young boys who impressed me at the last Nationals and three or four of them were rewarded with invitations to train with the squad that l to New Zealand. That process will continue at the tournament this year.” Varela is a futsal aficionado and has been involved in the game for many years both on the inside of the Australian camp and on the outside as a successful coach in local and interstate competitions. This gives him the ideal background to provide an insight into what issues hamper the Futsalroos in progressing as a force in the indoor game. “Lack of international exposure to the top teams in the world is always an issue, as you don’t really know how players who, even though performing well at domestic level, will react under the pressure of competing against the really good national teams,” he answers honestly. “I think it is important, and necessary, that we get to play international matches at home against quality opposition; the players and supporters have earned that right through many years of toil across Asia and other parts of the world.” It’s clear that Varela has a real passion for the game and the Futsalroo Head Coach is already thinking ahead. An overall strategy encompassing player and coaching development is a must as the squad builds for challenges in the near, and distant, future. “Given that there is a fairly solid core to the squad, it is a question of exposing as many other players as possible to the rigours of international futsal as we try to build on the depth of the squad,” Varela said. “Some players thrive under that pressure and others unfortunately don’t quite perform as expected. I am looking forward to the nice type of “headaches” of having to omit really good player from the final squad. I am looking for players who will perform at a consistent high level in both aspects of the game, attack and defence; one-off brilliant performances domestically, albeit exciting to watch, will not necessarily be what is needed at international level. “Also we need a solid coaching infrastructure, and a coordinated coaching approach across the country so when players are called into the Futsalroos squad, the National Coach, whoever he may be, can be assured that all the players are not just familiar with but conversant with the fundamentals and the different nuances of the sport so he just needs to work on specifics aspects and ways that he wants his team to perform. That is already starting to happen with the advent of the AFC coaching courses; obviously we are still a fair way behind the better countries in the world but I am sure that we will soon start to notice some changes.” What is evident already though is that the Futsalroos are in safe hands. www.footballaustralia.com.au 21 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships The Tournament Officials The FFA National Futsal Championship isn’t just about the players. This week will see a number of Australia’s finest and up-and-coming Futsal match officials take charge of the hundreds of games taking place throughout Sydney. The opportunity to officiate at the FFA National Futsal Championships is a huge honour and can provide a stepping stone for these match officials to further their individual representative careers. With a number of matches scheduled across the 29 teams, split across four different venues, the referees will have little time for rest over the course of an intensive week-long tournament. All officials at the FFA National Futsal Championship will receive training and debriefing from a number of experienced referee coaches also attending the tournament. These coaches provide a valuable service to the tournament officials, being on hand at the venues to give feedback to the officials at the conclusion of their matches and to monitor the progress of the officials across the week in order to help them improve and take home practical refereeing tips that they can utilise throughout their refereeing career. The evaluation process throughout the week plays a major part in the selection process of match officials for Finals day at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships - Tournament Officials Male Futsal Referees Hamish Driver-Rae (ACT) Janush Adabjou (NSW) Manwel Limnios (NSW) Nathan Pitt (ACT) Jared Katz (NSW) Ben McCarthy (NSW) Lachlann Driver-Rae (ACT) Zac Hibbard (NSW) Andrew Murray (SA) Julian Nicholls (ACT) Anthony Mansour (NSW) Bez Mohammidi (SA) Charlie Kurthi (ACT) Lachlan Abood (NSW) Sean Grimmond (SA) Cameron Shelton (ACT) Nathan McOrist (NSW) Zac Keenan (QLD) Duncan McLaren (ACT) Philip Di Matteo (NSW) Yianni Mooney (QLD) Jonathon Moore (NSW) Oscar Videan (NSW) Rhys Pope (QLD) Nicholas Backo (NSW) Tara Brown (NSW) Sam Turner (QLD) Khoder Yahgi (NSW) Mathew Wearne (NSW) Rowhen McBride (VIC) Kyle Hockings (NSW) Guy Laurenceson (NSW) Jason Wilman (VIC) Daniel Mathie (NSW) Hugh White (NSW) Rod Salas (VIC) Cameron Lee (NSW) Kyle Johnson (NSW) Anthony Riley (NZF) Matthew McOrist (NSW) Sam Blake (NSW) Matthew Stoneman (NZF) Adrian Brett (NSW) Jamie Ewin (NSW) Andrew Best (NNSW) Female Futsal Referees Tara Gilfillan (ACT) Salma Aly (NSW) Georgia Ghirardello (ACT) Laura Hockings (NSW) Chloe Gray (NSW) Futsal Referee Assessors & Coaches Robert Porritt (NSW) Adrian Tamplin (NSW) Scott Kidson (NSW) Paul Jones (NSW) Chris Colley (WA) James Nikolaidis (ACT) Geoff Magennis (NSW) Darius Turner (NSW) David Kurthi (ACT) Ray Grima (SA) Ryan Shepheard (NSW) Ross Butler (QLD) 22 www.footballaustralia.com.au 2016 FFA National Futsal Championships VALENTINE SPORTS PARK Are you looking for… • a complete accommodation solution for your group? • full size grass and synthetic football fields aligned to FIFA specifications? • a multi-purpose indoor sports centre?
