SWEDISH TEAM – MEDIA GUIDE. IAAF World Championships in Athletics – Osaka 2007.
Unique individuals
gain strength
through the team
The marvel of Swedish athletics is continuing to produce internationally successful athletes. Sweden is going to Osaka
with a team of 30 athletes, a mixture of
very experienced and promising stars.
There are numerous reasons why Swedish
Athletics is so successful on many levels.
Major championships on home ground,
experienced coaches and trainers, a solid
organization in the Federation and in the
Associations, excellent access to indoor
arenas, together with athletes that are
good role models for youth, are just some
of the reasons. Another one is the National
Team, itself.
“A significant part of our philosophy is to have a National Team, in which we provide
space for individuality, while, at the same time, we are building foundations and support together as a team. Anyone wanting it will always be able to receive full support
from the National Team. Team spirit is an important support for each unique and individual athlete,” states Thomas Engdahl, the National Team Manager.
On the weekend after the team comes home from the World Championships, an international match, Finnkampen, between Sweden and Finland awaits them in Göteborg.
This traditional competition began in 1925 and is the world’s most attended athletics
competition.
“Finnkampen is one of the competitions that is most looked forward to all year by the
athletes. For many, it’s also the end of a long competition season,” comments Thomas.
“Finnkampen is somewhat unique in the world of athletics. A team competition in athletics means that each performance in the entire National Team can be of the utmost
significance. Every little centimetre and hundredth part can signify an important point
for the team in the end.”
This is therefore one clue to the marvel of Swedish athletes. However, first awaits the
World Athletics Championships for the Swedish National Team in Osaka, a Championships that Thomas and his Team are looking forward to with great expectations and
enormous enthusiasm.

Note: At the '06 match vs Finland suddenly added 76 cm to her 6 years old PB missing the NR by just 1 cm.
Confirmed improvement this year by raising the Swedish indoor record by 45 cm to 17.46 and the outdoor
record by 20 cm to 17.72.
Uses the rotational technique which despite now being dominant among the men is quite rare in the women's
elite.

Just like Kajsa Bergqvist and Carolina Klüft began international career by winning the HJ at the European
Youth Olympics.
Since Helsinki bronze displayed great versatility by successfully venturing into also sprinting
(7.42i/11.58/23.02) and horizontal jumping (6.41/13.69i). This year, however, concentrated on the HJ.

Focus on steeplechase since '05. In '06 lowered PB by over 25 seconds and set NR.
Later in '06 lost that NR but reclaimed it this year with 9:38.55.

Note: Former gymnast who did 1.65 in the HJ first year as an athlete at age 17. This inspired to give the HJ
a serious try but a persistent foot injury prevented jumping at full force.
Just as a pastime while the injury healed started playing around with the PV (despite having a PB two cm
lower than in the HJ ...) and in first ever ”real” PV competition on 29 May '99 cleared 3.40.

SWEDISH TEAM – MEDIA GUIDE. IAAF World Championships in Athletics – Osaka 2007.
SWEDISH TEAM – MEDIA GUIDE. IAAF World Championships in Athletics – Osaka 2007.
On the way to Asia
2007 in Japan. 2008 in China. A period
of 2 years with the World Athletics
Championships and the Olympic Games
demands special preparations.
Immediately after the highly successful
European Athletics Championships in
Göteborg in 2006, which saw six medals
awarded to Swedish athletes, the takeoff
for the national team prior to going to
Asia consisted of quite a different gathering in the Swedish mountains, where the
planning was jointly set out.
At the end of April, the national team
22
went on a 3 week training camp to Japan
and China as preparations for Osaka and
Beijing. First and foremost, this was a
camp for getting ready for the World
Athletics Championships; however, there
was a visit to Beijing on the way to Japan,
the purpose of which was to become
acquainted with the Olympic sites.
The national team began the camp by
visiting Beijing to look at the Olympic
buildings and to train. Time was also set
aside to see the Great Wall of China,
Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden
City.
“We took the opportunity of going to see
the sights in China at this time, so as to
avoid any such interruptions while the
Olympics are in progress. We carefully
observed and analysed how the athletes
reacted and adjusted to the time difference. It’s not such a usual occurrence for
us to travel eastwards for training and
competing,” commented Thomas
Engdahl, the National Team Manager.
In Japan, the spring camp was in
Fukuoka, which is where the preparation
camp will be, prior to the 2008 Olympics.
During its time in Japan, the national
team visited Osaka to inspect the competition arena where the World Athletics
Championships will be held, while certain
members participated in the Grand Prix
Competitions there, in May.
The preparation camp for the World
Athletics Championships took place in
Marugame, so as to generate the best possible conditions for the athletes to succeed
in Osaka. The Swedish troop travelled to
Marahume immediately after the Swedish
Athletics Championships, which was their
last competition before the World
Athletics Championships.

runner and “immediately” ran credible times of 4:10/9:18 for 1500m/3000m.
Karlskrona
21.5.2005
Note: Steady progress averaging approximately four meters improvement per year since age 18 in ‘01.
Exceptionally consistent, in ‘05 had nine meets at 76/77 with 77.83 on top and in ‘06 his 81.75 PB was supported by 5x80 and 4x79.
And this year has 5x84 to backup new 85.75 PB set in May at the World Championships arena.
Built his own practice runway in the woods near his family home in Ramdala.
Has in off season competed in power lifting belonging to the national elite.
However, had mind set on shorter distances with the long time focus on 800m to which end competed mainly
at 400m until ‘06.
Big national breakthrough summer of ‘04 by at age 18 running three truly remarkable negatively-split 800m
races: Winning the national race at DN Galan in 1:48.15 (54.7/53.5!), placing 2nd at the Swedish
Championships in 1:47.07 (c54.5/52.6!) and winning the match vs Finland in 1:50.66 (59.3/51.4). In the last
race had 23.7 between 500m and 700m!
Stunned onlookers – and left the opposition standing – by employing the same kind of ”lightning strikes” tactics at the ‘05 European Junior Championships. Despite being last with 300m to go in the slow paced final –
and despite not hitting the front until coming off the last bend – won by 1.21 seconds!.

Note: Has lived in Sweden for just about his whole life as he was only a few
weeks old when family moved from Gambia in early ‘82.
Grew up in same neighbourhood as Christian Olsson, Yannick Tregaro and
Patrik Kristiansson in the Göteborg suburb of Angered.
The ‘95 WCh in hometown made great impact on the 13 years old. Decided
after seeing Sergey Bubka in action that Pole Vault was the sport to pursue!
Won final major meet before ‘05 WCh – the IAAF Super GP ”DN Galan” –
defeating i.a. 5 of would-be Helsinki top-7 but still couldn’t be entered into the
WCh due to not having made the then A-standard of 5.75.
When getting the chance in the ‘06 WICh immediately proved himself by
getting the silver medal.
Missed indoor season ‘07 due to hamstring injury.

Note: First coach Viljo Nousiainen had developed clubmate Patrik Sjöberg into the world’s premier high
jumper in mid 1980’s. When Viljo suddenly passed away in spring of ‘99 Yannick Tregaro (himself guided by
Viljo to 2.17 and a World Junior Ch final at age 18 in ‘96) stepped in as coach despite being Christian’s senior by just two years.

Note: Until autumn of ‘98 was a Div 7 soccer player who ran some local road races just as a jogger. After
having recorded 37:43 for 202nd place in ‘96 and 33:52 for 58th place in ‘97 he finished 18th in 31:38 in
‘98 at the mass 10K race “Midnattsloppet” in Stockholm. Was then spotted when – dressed like the archetypical fun-runner – passing his coach-to-be with a couple of kilometres left. When contacted by the coach a
few days later immediately decided to take running seriously and just 4½ months later ran a winning 8:20.65
in his first ever track race (3000m indoors).
Missed most of ‘05 and ‘06 due to persistent injury.

competition. Just two and a half years later made 2.30.
At Swedish Indoor Championships this winter raised his PB twice by clearing both 2.36 and 2.38 on first

Current score of 2.30+ meets is 19 - at same age Holm had 3.

Had first international success as a 400m-runner (silver at ‘01 European Juniors) but then chose 200m as
main event to improve his speed. However, long term focus remained at 400m and after ‘06 European 200m
silver switched priorities and re-focused on the 1-lap event.
In five 400m-races this year three NR‘s (45.12, 45.12 and 45.03) and losing only to Wariner, Merritt and
Taylor.
