IAAF World Championships in Athletics – Osaka 2007. Unique individuals gain strength through the team The marvel of Swedish athletics is continuing to produce internationally successful athletes. Sweden is going to Osaka with a team of 30 athletes, a mixture of very experienced and promising stars. There are numerous reasons why Swedish Athletics is so successful on many levels. Major championships on home ground, experienced coaches and trainers, a solid organization in the Federation and in the Associations, excellent access to indoor arenas, together with athletes that are good role models for youth, are just some of the reasons. Another one is the National Team, itself. “A significant part of our philosophy is to have a National Team, in which we provide space for individuality, while, at the same time, we are building foundations and support together as a team. Anyone wanting it will always be able to receive full support from the National Team. Team spirit is an important support for each unique and individual athlete,” states Thomas Engdahl, the National Team Manager. On the weekend after the team comes home from the World Championships, an international match, Finnkampen, between Sweden and Finland awaits them in Göteborg. This traditional competition began in 1925 and is the world’s most attended athletics competition. “Finnkampen is one of the competitions that is most looked forward to all year by the athletes. For many, it’s also the end of a long competition season,” comments Thomas. “Finnkampen is somewhat unique in the world of athletics. A team competition in athletics means that each performance in the entire National Team can be of the utmost significance. Every little centimetre and hundredth part can signify an important point for the team in the end.” This is therefore one clue to the marvel of Swedish athletes. However, first awaits the World Athletics Championships for the Swedish National Team in Osaka, a Championships that Thomas and his Team are looking forward to with great expectations and enormous enthusiasm. 3 SWEDISH TEAM – MEDIA GUIDE. IAAF World Championships in Athletics – Osaka 2007. SWEDISH TEAM – MEDIA GUIDE. IAAF World Championships in Athletics – Osaka 2007. On the way to Asia 2007 in Japan. 2008 in China. A period of 2 years with the World Athletics Championships and the Olympic Games demands special preparations. Immediately after the highly successful European Athletics Championships in Göteborg in 2006, which saw six medals awarded to Swedish athletes, the takeoff for the national team prior to going to Asia consisted of quite a different gathering in the Swedish mountains, where the planning was jointly set out. At the end of April, the national team 22 went on a 3 week training camp to Japan and China as preparations for Osaka and Beijing. First and foremost, this was a camp for getting ready for the World Athletics Championships; however, there was a visit to Beijing on the way to Japan, the purpose of which was to become acquainted with the Olympic sites. The national team began the camp by visiting Beijing to look at the Olympic buildings and to train. Time was also set aside to see the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. “We took the opportunity of going to see the sights in China at this time, so as to avoid any such interruptions while the Olympics are in progress. We carefully observed and analysed how the athletes reacted and adjusted to the time difference. It’s not such a usual occurrence for us to travel eastwards for training and competing,” commented Thomas Engdahl, the National Team Manager. In Japan, the spring camp was in Fukuoka, which is where the preparation camp will be, prior to the 2008 Olympics. During its time in Japan, the national team visited Osaka to inspect the competition arena where the World Athletics Championships will be held, while certain members participated in the Grand Prix Competitions there, in May. The preparation camp for the World Athletics Championships took place in Marugame, so as to generate the best possible conditions for the athletes to succeed in Osaka. The Swedish troop travelled to Marahume immediately after the Swedish Athletics Championships, which was their last competition before the World Athletics Championships. 23 SWEDISH TEAM – MEDIA GUIDE. Exceptionally consistent, in ‘05 had nine meets at 76/77 with 77.83 on top and in ‘06 his 81.75 PB was supported by 5x80 and 4x79. And this year has 5x84 to backup new 85.75 PB set in May at the World Championships arena. Built his own practice runway in the woods near his family home in Ramdala. Has in off season competed in power lifting belonging to the national elite. However, had mind set on shorter distances with the long time focus on 800m to which end competed mainly at 400m until ‘06. Big national breakthrough summer of ‘04 by at age 18 running three truly remarkable negatively-split 800m races: Winning the national race at DN Galan in 1:48.15 (54.7/53.5!), placing 2nd at the Swedish Championships in 1:47.07 (c54.5/52.6!) and winning the match vs Finland in 1:50.66 (59.3/51.4). In the last race had 23.7 between 500m and 700m! Stunned onlookers – and left the opposition standing – by employing the same kind of ”lightning strikes” tactics at the ‘05 European Junior Championships. Despite being last with 300m to go in the slow paced final – and despite not hitting the front until coming off the last bend – won by 1.21 seconds!.
