Welcoming you home
since 1972.
“O, how this spring of love resembleth
the uncertain glory of an April day;
Which now shows all the beauty of the sun,
and by and by a cloud takes all away!”
– The Two Gentlemen of Verona
Welcome to the 19th season of Shakespeare on the Sound and William
Shakespeare's delightful romantic comedy, The Two Gentlemen Of Verona. We
are thrilled once again to have the vision and creativity of Claire Shannon Kelly
directing this production!
With more than 40 years of experience, our team
delivers personal service and product quality, backed
by an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.
Here we are on the eve of our 20th year of presenting free Shakespeare
to you, our friends and neighbors, many of you returning, and many new faces
in the audience. We cannot thank you enough for your support throughout
the year, and are so very happy for all of you to be here to share our tradition
and this wonderful production .
Visit our showroom, with over 30 full-size garage
doors on display, and talk to us about our in-stock
selection and countless custom door options.
There will be a few audience favorite cast members from last summer's
production of As You Like It, and some new exciting cast members as well, not
to mention a somewhat local star who just finished a run on Broadway in Annie
playing the loveable Sandy. Yes, he truly is a dog ... his name is Oliver, he'll be
playing Crab, and he should provide a few good laughs for everyone.
Mon – Fri: 8:00am – 5:00pm
Saturday: 9:00am – 3:00pm
Sunday: Closed
Evenings: By appointment
We work year round to bring you these few short weeks of this summer
production and it would not be possible without the tireless work of our
Board, staff, education programs, creative teams, apprentices, interns and
volunteers. Thank you to everyone for making this production of The Two
Gentlemen Of Verona one of the most exciting productions to be seen by our
audiences.
Best regards,

from the President
of the Board of Directors
Dear Shakespeareans…
We all share a GIFT. The Bard’s GIFT of his experience, wit, humour,
erudition and talent in creating works of drama – in history, tragedy and
comedy. So, thank you William Shakespeare!
Shakespeare on the Sounds founders GAVE of their desire to expand
community offerings and so started Shakespeare on the Sound, SOS for
short. Their GIFT of theatrical and educational events cause participants to
consider and learn more about the human condition that Shakespeare so
brilliantly addresses. So, thank you founders!
The next GIFT comes from our team, the dedicated and talented crew
that makes SOS happen – our Board, our Staff, our Educators, our
Volunteers, our Actors. Hats off and thank you to all of them!
And the important GIFT of support comes from you, our audience.
Without you on the other side of the lights, we couldn’t exist. So, thank you!
As a community we have much for which to be grateful. Tonight we of
Shakespeare on the Sound are grateful for and to you, as the circle of giving
continues. So, thank you for your GIFT of your presence. As a result we all
have a bigger canvas for conversation and thought. Remember you are an
integral part of the show. ENJOY it!
Gratefully,
Cherie Burton

Synopsis
Two Gentlemen of Verona
When the play opens two young gentlemen of Verona, Valentine and
Proteus, prepare to separate after years of friendship. Valentine will travel to
the court of Milan, while Proteus plans to stay at home with the girl he loves,
Julia. Valentine sees himself as an adventurer while he critiques Proteus for
being so lovesick. Valentine departs for Milan with his servant, Speed. Julia
confers with her maid, Lucetta, about her choice of suitors and reveals that she
is enamored with Proteus. Proteus’ father, Antonio, worries that his son is
wasting his life by staying at home and so sends him to follow Valentine to the
Duke’s court. Heartsick that he must leave Julia, Proteus exchanges rings with
her and vows to love her only. Proteus reluctantly departs from Verona with his
servant, Launce and Launce’s beloved dog, Crab.
Proteus tells the Duke that Valentine and Silvia are planning to steal away
together and the Duke catches Valentine on his way to elope with Silvia. Irate
at the deception, the Duke banishes Valentine from Milan. Julia, pining for
Proteus, decides to follow him to Milan, disguised as a boy. Upon arrival Julia
finds that Proteus is wooing Silvia. He pretends that he is courting Silvia on
Lord Thurio’s behalf, but Julia rightly sees through the deception. Proteus also
attempts to denigrate his friend, Valentine, in the hopes that Silvia will stop
loving him. Julia becomes Proteus’ servant and is forced to woo Silvia on
Proteus’ behalf. Silvia appeals to the courtly Sir Eglamour to help her find the
banished Valentine.
Meanwhile in Milan, Valentine is transformed from an adventurer to a
lover – he has fallen in love with Lady Silvia, the daughter of the Duke. He woos
her in spite of the fact that her father prefers Lord Thurio, a suitor Silvia
despises. Proteus arrives in Milan and is amazed to find Valentine so
transformed. When he meets Silvia, however, Proteus changes affection (as his
name suggests “protean=changing”) and falls in love with Silvia, too. Though
he has some brief qualms about betraying his friend and his love, Julia, Proteus
quickly gets over them and plots to get his rival, Valentine, out of the way.

Valentine and Speed encounter a group of outlaws in the forest outside
Milan, who threaten them, but quickly decide to take them into their band of
merry men. The outlaws, like Valentine, are banished gentlemen. Recognizing
Valentine’s quality the outlaws make him their leader. Later, some of the
outlaws capture Silvia and Sir Eglamour in the forest. Sir Eglamour flees and
the outlaws intend to bring Silvia to their leader.
Proteus, the Duke, and Thurio, having learned of Silvia's flight, pursue her,
and Proteus finds her with the outlaws. He “rescues” her from them and
expects her to love him in return. Valentine finds them in the forest, just as
Proteus says he will force Silvia to love him. Bursting in upon them, Valentine
is horrified at Proteus’ betrayal of their friendship. Proteus repents and begs
forgiveness. Julia, dressed as the boy Sebastian, sees this exchange and
swoons. She then reveals that she is Julia and Proteus declares that his love has
returned for Julia. Valentine, delighted with his friend’s transformation back to
his original love declares that they will have “One feast, one house, one mutual
happiness!”

notes from
the Director
Apprentice Pre-Show
for Young Audiences
25- Minute performance for young audiences
with the themes of The Two Gentlemen of Verona
The Two Gentlemen of Verona, of all Shakespeare’s
plays, is most like a fairytale. It incorporates
adventure, romance and danger in a fun and madcap
way. In our production, we want to bring this fantastic story to life. With our
design team, my vision was to begin the play with a giant book
(Shakespeare’s First Folio) and to have the characters leaping off the page. I
always loved reading storybooks with wonderful illustrations. When reading
a fairy tale the illustrated images on the page always drew me deeper into
the story and I loved to imagine that I was right there with a Prince as he
slew the fearsome dragon. In directing this production, I am hoping that you
will feel like you are in the midst of Shakespeare’s wonderful characters. We
have loved imagining this silly comedy of love and romance set in our
beautiful Pinkney Park. Performed nightly at 6:30 by the Education Tent
Cast List:
Proteus: Briana Archer
Valentine: Catherine Luciani
Julia: Caroline Lazar
Silvia: Julia Lennon
Mother/Lucetta/Duke: Kristen Misthopoulos
Lance/Thurio: Avery Deutsch

Like a fairy tale, our production is set in the past, though not specific
to any time period, a time long ago when chivalry still existed. The concept
of the “gentleman” is essential to the play and the qualities of nobleness,
gentleness, taste, heroism, independence and honor resonate more in a time
long ago. For the first time in many years we are using classical music from
Mozart to Rachmaninoff. To enhance the comedy of the play and in a nod
to Commedia dell’Arte, which influenced Shakespeare, we are employing a
broad acting style. We have so enjoyed finding the humor in this play, and
we hope you do too! Sharing laughter is such a great way to bring our
community together, so enjoy the gorgeous costumes, lovely music and
exciting performances.

About the Text
The Two Gentlemen of Verona is probably Shakespeare’s first play. In it
you will hear lines and see situations that are more developed in later plays.
Don’t be surprised if you think you’ve heard some of the lines before or
recognize the drama of the scenes. Hints of Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night,
As You Like It and Hamlet course through the play. At times, it seems we are
watching a young playwright try out different themes that will be more
deftly realized in later plays. The Two Gentlemen of Verona feels surprisingly
new and familiar at the same time.
The play treats the theme of friendship and love from a youthful
perspective. Two young men, Valentine and Proteus, need to figure out their
way in the world. The play asks, “What is the best way to fashion a
gentleman?” Valentine sets out to explore the world by adventure and
politics. Proteus seeks to follow his heart, hoping that courtship will be his
tutor. The truth is, that in the court of Queen Elizabeth, these two seemingly
disparate paths were not at odds. If we take Sir Walter Raleigh as the
consummate gentleman of the age (Raleigh is the one who famously spread
his cloak over a puddle for the Queen to step on), then we can see how
gentlemen were expected to be adept at love and politics. Raleigh
discovered Roanoke and Jamestown, adventuring across the Atlantic Ocean
to conquer the New World for the Queen. He also wrote some of the most
beautiful love poetry of the period
and was renowned for his courtly
behavior.
The famous clown, Will Kemp and his dog would have performed these
scenes on Shakespeare’s stage and no audience would miss the mockery of
these two “gentlemen” of Verona. But, what of the women? Julia,
Shakespeare’s first cross-dressed heroine, is true to her love even as she
betrays her own feelings, wooing Silvia for her own beloved Proteus. Silvia is
first to call Proteus to task for betraying his friend, Valentine. Proteus says,
”In love who respects a friend?” Silvia replies: “All men but Proteus.” Proteus
has violated the Renaissance code of male friendship, but Shakespeare gives
that criticism to a female character, Silvia, whose very name evokes the forest
and nature, rather than the court.
Shakespeare uses doubling in the play to parody social conventions of
love and friendship. There are two sets of lovers, two clowns, two maids and
even two dogs. The humor of the play unfolds by comparison and in our
production is most noticeable in the competition between the clowns,
Speed and Launce, after the intermission. In a nod to the elements of
Commedia dell’arte in this play our clowns will perform a series of lazzis
(improvised comic bits). This comic competition suggests the central
conflict of the play between the two gentlemen. As their names suggest,
Valentine and Proteus are destined to represent the true heart (constancy)
and metamorphosis (change). Even as a young playwright, Shakespeare
reveals truths about human nature that still resonate today.

But to understand the
characters of The Two Gentlemen of
Verona, we have to recognize that
Shakespeare was writing in a
culture that esteemed male
friendship above the romantic love
between a man and a woman. By
the end of his career, Shakespeare
seems less certain of this hierarchy
of platonic love versus romantic
love, and perhaps we see that
questioning best in Launce and his
dog, Crab. In fact, the relationship
between Launce and Crab parodies
the idea of friendship in the play.
Here is an “indivisible” bond: “O,
the dog is me and I am myself,” says
Launce. Here is the sacrifice of true
friendship: “I have sat in the stocks for puddings he hath stolen, otherwise
he had been executed,” complains Launce of Crab.

Adult Lecture – Two Gentlemen of Verona
Speaking Daggers: Shakespeare and the
Fight Against Bullying
In November of 2012, Shakespeare
on the Sound was asked to bring
'Speaking Daggers' into the
Hartford Public School System. We
premiered the program in Hartford
at McDonough Experiential
Learning School and America's
Choice at SAND school to praise
from teachers and students. We
continued our tour of the program at schools throughtout the region. This
program addresses the national epidemic of bullying through Shakespeare's
works by looking at the complex power relationships between the characters
in Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Merchant of Venice. The
program allows students to take action in finding alternative solutions in the
conflicts in the play by inviting them onto the stage with the actors. The
program also addresses social exclusion, cyberbullying, and empathy
building all through active dialogue between actor and student. Shakespeare
on the Sound continues to enter into classrooms across Connecticut and
Westchester county bringing the works and words of Shakespeare alive to
students from every generation.
Mark Schenker of Yale University leads a discussion of The Two Gentlemen of
Verona both as an individual play and with respect to its place in the Shakespeare
canon. One of Shakespeare’s earliest works and—in the view of some critics—
his first comedy, Two Gentlemen presents a world in which the values of love and
those of friendship appear to be at odds. As it moves towards resolution and
reconciliation, it employs elements of plot and character that we will see in the
more mature plays, including Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, As You Like
It, and Twelfth Night.
Copies of The Two Gentlemen of Verona will be available for participants’ use during the lecture. It is not necessary to read the play in advance.
Mark J. Schenker has been at Yale College since 1990. He is currently a senior associate dean of the College and dean of academic affairs. Born and raised
in New York City, he received his Ph.D. in English Literature from Columbia University and has taught at Columbia, New York University, and Trinity College
(Hartford). Dean Schenker has led book discussion series in public libraries and
other venues in Connecticut for over 25 years and lectures frequently on literature and film for public audiences. He was the recipient of the 2001 Wilbur
Cross Award for Outstanding Humanities Scholar, presented by the Connecticut Humanities Council. This is his tenth year lecturing on the productions put
up by Shakespeare on the Sound.

Shakespeare on the Sound –
some history
1995 Outdoor Shakespeare in Rowayton was the brainchild of Megan
Crowley McAllister. She suggested the idea to Ezra Barnes, an actor/director,
who had experience founding a similar company in Westerly, R.I. They
recruited six others to form a Board and then raised the funds for the first
production.
1996 Rowayton’s 6th Taxing District gave permission for the first
production to be staged in Pinkney Park. This park on the banks of the Five
Mile River has a topography that creates a natural amphitheater. Much Ado
About Nothing was the inaugural production. Scheduled for 8 performances,
one was lost to bad weather. To the delight of all, an estimated 6,000 saw
this show. Donations at the gate and a first Gala helped make for a breakeven year.
1997-1999 The number of performances increased from 8 to 12. The plays
were Twelfth Night (1997), The Taming of the Shrew (1998) and Romeo and
Juliet (1999). Combining more performances and popular plays resulted in
increased audiences, peaking in 1999 with 10,500. Community support and
a growing audience provided financial stability.
some history
(2011) and Romeo and Juliet (2012). Costs were going up and the economy
down, so the Board recognized changes had to be made.
2012 -2014 Steven Yuhasz with 30 years of experience as a producer and
director on Broadway, Off-Broadway and numerous regional theatres
became Executive Director, marking a change in organizational structure. He
produced Romeo and Juliet, then the general management of productions
with a change to the hiring of an annual guest director. Production was
pulled from Greenwich and the budget cut to pay down debt. Back in
Rowayton only, As You Like It (2013) directed by Claire Shannon Kelly was a
critical success. Our debt was halved. Concurrently, Emily Bryan became
Director of Education. She expanded Shakespeare in lower Fairfield County
schools, promoted the summer camp program, and established our crown
jewel anti-bullying program, “Speaking Daggers.” The Apprentice Program
continues to introduce young people to the theatre arts.
2015 We will celebrate our 20th year! As we honor our Founders, we
hope you will join in!
2000-2006 In 2000, the season was extended to 16 performances. The
plays were A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2000), Henry V (2001), As You Like
It (2002), The Merchant of Venice (2003), The Winter’s Tale (2004), The
Tempest (2005) and Macbeth (2006). The audiences averaged 9,000 per
year. The suggested “donation” increased to $15 in 2002 and $20 in 2004.
The Gala, now an established event became a major part of fund raising. In
2006 the Board and management decided to find a second venue.
2007-2008 An agreement to test a short season in Baldwin Park was
reached with Greenwich. That park, while larger and flatter than Pinkney Park
has its waterfront on Greenwich harbor. After Rowatyon’s run in 2007, the
show was transferred to Greenwich where 4 performances played to 4,000
people. In 2008, the number of Greenwich shows doubled. The plays were
The Comedy of Errors (2007) and Julius Caesar (2008).
2009-2011 The company underwent a year of major artistic change with
the hiring of Joanna Settle as Artistic Director. The new artistic team’s
international credentials created a show that also increased rehearsal time
and raised actors’ salaries. The play A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2009) was
her first production. Nearly 14,000 attended, accounting for the largest
audience ever. Launched in 2009, was our Apprentice Company and a new
play reading series. Joanna directed Othello (2010), Much Ado About Nothing
Chris Ghaffari (Orlando) and Christopher Smalley (Charles) in a wrestling match from
Shakespeare on the Sound's As You Like It.
