JUSTIFYING THE NEED FOR A TMC
• Allows staff to monitor real-time traffic flows and
make adjustments to the traffic signal timing as
needed from one centralized location.
• Helps staff to detect, monitor, and apply
transportation management measures at incident
locations as they occur.
• Allows staff to monitor and adjust traffic signal timing
plans during special events.
• Helps staff to monitor and provide traveler
information during peak traffic periods and/or
emergency situations.
• And, could be considered a “creative measure” in
addressing excessive traffic volumes that well exceed
roadway capacities.

CHALLENGES IN IMPLEMENTING THE TMC
•
•
•
•
Finding the ideal location.
Getting IT on-board early in the project.
Project Champion- OFD and IT.
Unexpected costs:
• User license to activate CCTV cameras
• UPS system
• Clean agent fire suppression system
• Maintenance and upkeep.
• Adding new CCTV camera locations.
• Hire a company that knows how to integrate the plan
from beginning to end.
