VERSION: 04-30-2016 OFFICIAL RULES 2016 © 2013 - 2016 – Really Angry Crabs, LLC VERSION: 04-30-2016 PROLOGUE: Puget Sound Speed-Crabbing was designed to answer one burning question: Who are Puget Sound’s GREATEST Recreational Crabbers? To find out we had to create an entirely new kind of derby! Our goal is to grow the sport of recreational crabbing and to teach the public how to crab safely, responsibly and more effectively. It’s a true Northwest original! And, it’s rooted in the spirit of fun and friendly competition amongst friends. Are you Puget Sound’s Greatest Recreational Crabber? Sign up today at www.speedcrabbing.com and find out! It’s FREE to enter! THE NAME OF THE GAME: What is Speed-Crabbing? It’s exactly like regular crabbing, except way faster, and you can win some seriously sweet prizes! Speed-Crabbing is a game of chance and skill where teams compete to haul in the most Dungeness crab (by weight) in the shortest amount of time. The 10 heaviest legal crab will count towards your final team score. Come in early and receive a weight bonus added to your total, come in late and receive a weight penalty or worse, be disqualified. That’s why we call it “Speed” Crabbing! The team with the highest overall score at the end of the derby wins! Please read the entire rules packet! If you have any questions simply email us at ask@speedcrabbing.com TEAM SIZE: Your team may consist of 2, 3, or 4 Speed-Crabbers. Decide on a Team Name and select a Captain. The Captain leads the charge and delegates the harvest responsibilities to the rest of the crew. Children under the age of 10 do not count towards your team total, but you must be able to prove their age during check-in. An adult must accompany any children under the age of 18. Teams must operate from a single boat. No cooperation between teams is allowed. Each person must have a valid WA crabbing license and photo ID. © 2013 - 2016 – Really Angry Crabs, LLC VERSION: 04-30-2016 GEAR LIMIT: A maximum of 4 Units of Gear is allowed per team. A Unit of Gear is defined as 1 pot/trap/ring, tied to 1 line, and attached to 1 set of buoys. All gear must be compliant with WDFW regulations. No scuba diving, no free diving, no shore collection, no use of fishing poles, no snares, no dock crabbing, nor is any other crabbing method allowed in the competition. CHECK-IN: When you arrive at the Port of Everett, launch your boat at the 10th Street Boat Ramp. Remember, the Port of Everett charges a fee to use the ramp as well as for parking. In your boat - proceed out through the finger docks and turn left toward open water. In about 100 yards look for a derby representative in an orange hat and park your boat at Dock 6 as directed. (Same dock as last year, but it was renamed Dock 6, formerly known as JDock) See Map [A] for location of Dock 6. Once parked at Dock 6 – report to Derby HQ (The tents at the floating platform). Make sure you have your Speed-Crabbing Team Ticket ready to go. You will receive a start packet with your team ID number. Remember, your team ID number must accompany your catch submission at the weigh-in station. If you have your FREE Grab Bag Voucher turn it over to get your loot! Once checked-in please return to your boat for inspection. Derby representatives walk the docks inspecting boats for illegally stowed crab making sure you adhere to the 4 crab pot gear limit. Any team that refuses the vessel inspection will be denied entrance into the derby. Now you’re ready to go Speed-Crabbing! Feel free to hang out at Dock 6. We recommend proceeding leaving for the standby area 15 minutes before Derby Start. Do not advance into the Speed-Crabbing field until Derby Start. See Map [B] for specific details about the Standby Area boundaries. © 2013 - 2016 – Really Angry Crabs, LLC VERSION: 04-30-2016 DERBY START: Head to the South end of the channel and look for the Official Derby Boat (With a big American Flag on it!). Do NOT exceed the 10 MPH speed limit in the channel at any time. An air horn marks the beginning of the derby! You may now exit the Standby Area and advance into the Speed-Crabbing Field. No crabbing is allowed in the Standby Area. See Map [B] for specific details about the Standby Area boundaries. SPEED-CRABBING: Luck is an inherent measure of success in any crabbing expedition. However, luck alone won’t win you a Speed-Crabbing derby! To be Puget Sound’s GREATEST Recreational Crabber, you must also demonstrate great teamwork, speed, and expertise in crabbing technique. The goal is to catch and weigh-in your 10 heaviest Dungeness crabs in the shortest amount of time. There is a maximum of 10 Dungeness crabs per team. However, you may finish with fewer than 10 Dungeness crabs. Because of the bonus/penalty points involved in the scoring system, it is very possible to win the derby with a catch submission of fewer than 10 crabs. Any extra crabs not submitted for weighing must be separated from your catch submission. The team with the highest overall score (catch submission weight + weight bonus or penalties) at the end of the derby wins the title of Puget Sound’s Greatest Recreational Crabbers! The WDFW harvest rules complement and supersede these Official Puget Sound Speed-Crabbing (PSSC) derby rules. Review the harvest rules online at: http://www.wdfw.wa.gov. Any team caught violating the harvest rules may be disqualified from the derby. Any undersized, female, or softshelled crab submitted for weigh-in will not be added to your final score and must be returned to the water immediately. By participating in any Puget Sound Speed-Crabbing event you agree to follow these Official PSSC Derby Rules as well as the Official PSSC Terms and Conditions, which contains a Waiver of Liability clause. These documents are available online at http://www.speedcrabbing.com. We are not responsible for your actions on the water. PLEASE always be safe and respectful during the PSSC derby. © 2013 - 2016 – Really Angry Crabs, LLC VERSION: 04-30-2016 FINISH LINE/OUT TIME: The Finish Line is essentially the back of the line at the Weigh-In Station. A derby representative will assign you an Official Out Time once you get in line. You must have at least two team members present, along with your Catch Submission Cooler, your Team ID, and your crabbing licenses and catch-record cards present to receive your out time. From the Speed-Crabbing Field, enter the channel (Do NOT exceed the 10 MPH speed limit in the channel), and park back at Visitor J-Dock. See Map [C] for specific details about the Finish Line and Weigh-In Station. Present your Catch Cooler and Team ID to the Out Time Judge for your team to receive your Official Out Time. Your Out Time will determine if your team receives a Weight Bonus or Weight Penalty according to the Official Scoring System. Wait in line and approach the Weigh-In Station where your crab will be judged according to the Catch Submission Rules and measured. CATCH SUBMISSION RULES: A Catch Submission must contain between 1-10 Units of Live Dungeness crab within a single Catch Cooler accompanied by a team member in possession of the Team ID number. A Unit of Crab is defined as the body of the Dungeness crab with any fully attached legs or appendages. The Weigh-In Judge will inspect your teams Catch Submission prior to taking weight measurements. Any legs or claws separated from the body of the crab will be removed before Weigh-In. Any undersized, female, or soft-shelled crabs will also be removed before Weigh-In, and immediately returned to the water. What remains is your Approved Catch Submission. Make sure to mark your single largest crab with the Lunker Tag. © 2013 - 2016 – Really Angry Crabs, LLC VERSION: 04-30-2016 WEIGH-IN RULES: Your Approved Catch Submission is measured to 1/1000th of a pound. The Lunker is weighed separately. The Weigh-In Judge will then calculate your Final Team Score which is the weight of your Approved Catch Submission + the Weight Bonus or Penalty derived from your Official Out Time. Once the measurements are recorded the Approved Catch Submission is immediately returned to the team. Make sure to have some extra ice with you to keep your crab fresh between weigh-in and the time we announce the winners! WINNING/PRIZES: The Final Team Scores are ranked in the Final Standings from highest to lowest and the Official Winners are selected. The members of the First Place Team earn the title of “Puget Sound’s Greatest Recreational Crabbers”. The Official Winners also receive a prize from the Grand Prize Pool. The prizes are selected from the pool by the team in the order they rank in the Final Standings. 1st Place gets first pick, 2nd Place gets second pick, etc., until all the prizes are gone. Ownership of the prizes is given to the team as a whole and prize selection is final at the time of selection by the team. The Lunker Award is given to the individual responsible for catching the single largest crab of the Speed-Crabbing derby. The entire team must vouch for this individual and ownership of the Lunker Award is given solely to the individual in mention. Weight Bonuses and Penalties have no effect on the Lunker Award. Sponsor-Powered Giving: These amazing sponsors made a pledge to donate to the SCCA based on the amount of crab YOU catch! Every pound of crab weighed in the competition is multiplied by the sum of the sponsor pledges! You don’t have to do anything but show up and go Speed-Crabbing to help make a difference! 2. Team-Powered Giving: Teams also have the option to participate in the Team-Powered charity event. You can quickly set up a FirstGiving donation page using our premium system. It only takes a few minutes. Then, ask your family and friends to make a pledge toward your team’s individual efforts. The teams that create the largest donations win prizes from the Charity Prize Pool! The donation pages close at 11:59PM the Sunday after the derby. Winners are announced on www.speedcrabbing.com and Facebook. THE FINAL WORD: Puget Sound Speed-Crabbing was invented by a group of friends who just want to share their love of recreational crabbing with the world. The soul of this derby is rooted in a sense of fun and friendly competition amongst friends. It’s open to people of all shapes, sizes, races, and creeds. Remember, don’t take it too seriously, it’s more about being together (and eating together) than it is about winning. Please be safe and follow the rules at all times! Make this sport as welcoming as possible to everyone! Thank you for participating in the world’s only Speed-Crabbing derby! © 2013 - 2016 – Really Angry Crabs, LLC VERSION: 04-30-2016 SCHEDULES AND MAPS 2016 © 2013 - 2016 – Really Angry Crabs, LLC VERSION: 04-30-2016 OFFICIAL SCHEDULE: Saturday July 9th, 2016 7:30 AM Check-In Opens 9:00 AM OFFICIAL DERBY START TIME! 9:00 AM – 12:59 PM Regulation Time (+3.00Lb.
