Lino Tagliapietra is certainly one of my favorites. His use of color and patterns are completely over the top. He’s a master, and widely regarded as the best glass maker ever. Weirdest thing about you? Even when life or work gets overwhelming or difficult, I just love working in my shop. Somehow, I feel in tune with the glass, and I can work in the intense heat and it doesn’t get to me. Hot is good. Girls’ night out, book clubs, whatever! Muse Gallery, 356 Main, Longmont $35 includes supplies, wine & appetizers CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF THE MUSE GALLERY Any pet peeves? When people quit because a project isn’t working exactly as they planned. Seriously, in glass blowing you can’t make mistakes. If and when you do mess up, you have to have the mindset that all isn’t lost. It can be very challenging. Do you offer glass blowing demonstrations? All the time, but for safety it has to be by appointment. I’m on the Longmont Studio Tour too, so I’ve had all walks of life in the shop, from the Red Hatters to teachers and students – even Date Nights, believe it or not! I have two types of demos. In the first, I’ll create a piece from start to finish, explaining the process as I go. I describe how the glass is melted, colored and formed. In the second, I offer a hands-on approach. We actually have participants sit on the glass making bench and blow, twist and stretch the hot glass, experiencing the process for themselves. What inspires you? That’s tough to put into words. Everything inspires me, but that’s not a good answer for you! To narrow it down a little, I’d say the patterns in nature, from the symmetrical to the random, light and how it interacts with all things, and perspective. Everything changes with every angle, every viewpoint. Angelo Ambrosia Angelo Ambrosia has been one of the Muse Gallery’s most popular artists from the first time he exhibited. Angelo’s creative life began under the instruction of his father, Alphonse Ambrosia. These first acquired skills, woodworking, photography, and black and white film processing laid a firm foundation for what would become a never ending fascination with creating beautiful art. As a young man, Angelo began working with clay. In 1999, Angelo moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to continue his work in ceramics. He began producing ceramic art for retail and wholesale markets. In addition to this work, he joined a team of artists and craftspeople on several large public art projects around the Santa Fe area. After several years in Santa Fe, Angelo moved to Longmont where he was to find the art of glassblowing and this has been his passion ever since. Angelo believes that quality art, both functional and sculptural should reflect emotion, creativity and craftsmanship. New events and programs needed participants, existing ones needed to reach audiences and lure new people. The reality was, and is, that most arts organizations are non-profits with scanty advertising budgets. Arts organizations needed an affordable outlet for the community to learn about everything arts and entertainment in one place, from events and festivals to classes. The Longmont Council for the Arts could accept the status quo or get creative. I’ll take creative any day. So we decided on a newsletter, and the rest is¬…well, read on. Change is Growth Embrace creativity. Enhance culture. Welcome to the new look of the ART Enthusiast magazine! We hope you like it as much as we do, as it’s only the beginning of the energy and enthusiasm generated by the staff, board and volunteers of the Longmont Council of the Arts! We welcome serveral new directors who will help shape the future of the community: Kimberly McKee at the Longmont Downtown Development Authority, John Giantonio at the Longmont Area Visitors Association and Wesley Jessup at the Longmont Museum & Cultural Center. We embrace the change from newsletter to magazine style. Creativity and collaboration are what made it happen. Executive director Joanne Kirves and administrative assistant Cathy Balan keep it all together. The cover concept was Anne Schmid’s long-time dream We are excited about the changes taking place, not only with the LCA, but also in the community with the development of the Arts & Entertainment district. It’s a wonderful vision for “We’re excited about the changes the future of the city and the place taking place, not only with the we call home. We LCA, but community-wide, espeare fortunate to live in a commucially with the development of an nity where the Arts & Entertainment district.” cultural arts are alive and well. [ The LCA provides leadership and advocacy to support, inspire and enhance the arts community and elevate quality of life. We envision a community rich in culture where the arts inspire innovative spirit, celebrate cultural diversity and encourage individual and community involvement. As we move forward we extend thanks to all those who have been champions in shaping the LCA into the creative organization it is today. Special thanks goes to Anne Schmid for her leadership as LCA past president and as the creator and ongoing editor of the ART Enthusiast for more than six years. She and husband Dr. Peter Schmid are true enthusiasts in keeping a thriving arts community for all of us. Frankly, there weren’t many interested in a job like this. Creating a calendar for dozens of local arts organizations was tedious on a good day, and finding writers and advertisers for a fledgling print publication was challenging. But I couldn’t help thinking this could turn into something special for the community. People could learn about so many diverse, sophisticated arts and cultural opportunities right here in Longmont. Think of the world class music at Friday Afternoon Concerts, the first solo Audubon exhibit at the Longmont Museum, and over 65 inspiring artists on the Longmont Studio Tour, and that’s just the beginning. I envisioned this publication as a [ for the ART Enthusiast and encouraged by Mary Simpson who helped to make it visual. In honor of the Muse Gallery’s 10th anniversary, Angelo Ambrosia was selected as the first featured artist on the cover as his works of glass are well received at the Muse. The exquisite green vessel was photographed in the studio of Debbie Adams Photography (that’s me!) and the modern look of the magazine was created by Anne Schmid. The LCA has a fresh logo, and we will be launching a newly designed website this summer. We are delighted to work with the creative minds and expertise of Mary and Rod Simpson of Bark! Multimedia in the development and impressions of our image to artists, businesses and the community. If you are a patron of the arts, I invite you to join me in the Creator’s Circle of Longmont Council for the Arts. The Creator’s Circle is an endeavor to engage community-minded, enthusiastic and trendsetting patrons who encourage the growth of the arts in Longmont by embracing creativity and enhancing culture. Join us! More information on Patron Levels is located on page 12, and a Patron form is on the back page. Have a great summer. We hope to see you at Art, Wine & Jazz in August! The ART Enthusiast began humbly. After all, I had to begin from the ground up. I sought advertisers that are still with us today (thank you for your faith in the LCA and me), assembled an all-inclusive calendar, and wrote the articles. It began with eight pages, color front with black and white inside, distributed to 9,000 annually. While the initial newsletters weren’t nearly as refined as I wanted, it was a start. We’ve since added full color, increased the number of pages, tripled distribution, and people began coming to us to contribute articles and photography. Now we have a new look, additional contributors, doubled the pages, and we’re not stopping here! All of us at the LCA hope you will enjoy the new ART Enthusiast. We see it as tangible proof the LCA is committed to embracing creativity and enhancing the arts of all disciplines for our community. Tell us what you think. Taking him from the world of high tech, to the world of high art, artist Duane Farquhar’s odyssey is a fascinating and inspiring one. Additionally, Duane creates masks, drawing inspiration from Old Romanian and African maskwork. Indeed, the class would be a catalyst for Duane’s passion for clay and his interest grew rapidly. Taking inspiration from artist Robert Arneson, Duane started creating sculptures of people’s heads. The first series was based on characters from a Rudyard Kipling story, creating from images he invented in his mind to match the stories. From there, Duane created more representational sculptures and masks. His sculptures focus on the one or two characteristics of a person that stand out in his mind, a sort of caricature. To celebrate the opening of Face Forward on July 8th, the 2nd Friday reception will be a Masquerade! Join us at the opening wearing your favorite mask. Don’t have a mask? Not to worry: local students have created masks especially for the opening. The exhibition at the Muse Gallery in the WESTend will feature all three: sculptures of heads, faces, and masks. The Community Space will feature masks created by the Fall River Summer Camp kids. Check out Duane in action! Visit the Muse Gallery on July 15th during ArtWalk. By Joanne Kirves, Executive Director Longmont Council for the Arts Pictured: The Barber skinny jeans. ArtWalk, in historic downtown Longmont, will continue the celebration of its 15th anniversary during the July 15 event with a groundbreaking dance performance in the south 300 block from 6:45-7:30 p.m. ArtWalk Longmont is accepting entries for the 5th Annual Art Through the Lens photo contest. The contest is open to professional and amateurs and juried applicants will be exhibited during the September 16 ArtWalk. Go to artwalklongmont.org for more information and an application. A few years ago, Duane’s daughter begged him to take a 3D sculpture class at Front Range Community College. Not because he had an inherent talent, mind you, but because they needed one more student or the class would be cancelled. How could he say no to that? But auspicious things were in the offing from this rather odd beginning. “When you look at someone and a certain feature stands out, like Tom Selleck’s mustache, Marty Feldman’s eyes or Adrian Brody’s nose,” said Duane, “I take that feature, picture it in my head and then create the sculpture around that image.” ArtWalk celebrates 15 years! There will also be fire trucks and festivities on 4th Avenue to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Old Firehouse Arts Center. There will be an Art in Public Places dedication in St. Stephen’s Plaza. Duane spent 15 years as an Information Technology professional and was laid off not once, not twice, but seven times! The seventh time was the charm because Duane finally decided the time had come to pursue his real passion – sculpture in clay. Get back in your Creative Kids Summer Art Classes! Summer Lovin’ Opera Arias and Musical Theater by Soprano Kara Guggenmos House Concert volunteer coordinator Gretchen Beall works diligently to bring world class music to Longmont. For the final House Concert of the season on June 12, Gretchen’s selection of world-class music spotlights Longmont’s own Kara Gugggenmos, soprano. The concert’s theme is Summer Lovin.’ The first half of the performance will be songs inspired by summer. Kara will perform A Knoxville Summer of 1915 by Samuel Barber. The song expresses the nostalgia of a Knoxville summer night. After a short intermission, Kara will shift to favorite opera arias and musical theater songs like Madame Butterfly. Kara has performed House Concerts in several other cities. “I love the intimacy of house concerts. When you’re on a big stage you can be in your own world. In a House Concert the people are right there. They can see every expression. The challenge is to connect with the audience,” she said. Kara Guggenmos received her Bachelor of Music degree in Sacred Voice Performance from Moody Bible Institute and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado in Boulder . By choice, her career is mostly local so she can be with her family and raise her three sons. She is the Worship Director for Calvary Church and enjoys performing with the Longmont Symphony. She loves working with Bob Olsen, which she has done several times. Robert Spillman, a retired professor from University of Colorado, will accompany Kara on piano. The pair have worked together on and off since she studied with him at the University of Colorado. “He is so professional, and he loves making music,” said Kara. House Concerts are an intimate setting for music lovers to take in a variety of musical genres and styles performed by world class musicians. Tickets are $35 and seating is limited. Call the LCA office at 303-678-7869 to get your tickets. Seating begins at 3:45 p.m., and the concert begins at 4 p.m. A reception immediately follows the concert, so stay and mingle with the musicians and other music lovers! By Kyle and Joanne Kirves House Concert photograph by Tim Ellis It is a great time for Arts & Entertainment in Longmont, and Downtown is the perfect stage to experience all of our great, diverse, artistic talents. For the past year, the Longmont Downtown Development Authority (LDDA) and the Longmont community have been working on establishing an Arts & Entertainment District in our historic downtown. Through a variety of stakeholder and steering committee meetings, we were able to capture the dreams and visions of our community. The community-driven steering committee that led the effort prioritized and unanimously approved the final report. This spring, the LDDA Board adopted the report as a policy document and the City Council gave its endorsement. The final report steers a path for not only a thriving arts and entertainment district, but provided the needed foundation for a strong downtown district in the heart of our town. During our recent Board Retreat, we prioritized several of the items in this report. We will be taking next steps to incorporate them into our annual work plan. Now comes the fun (albeit hard) part – IMPLEMENTATION! It is a time that we call for organizations, artists, merchants and community volunteers to work together to keep the momentum going! As I will continue to say, "This is Our Time to Create and Be Creative!” This plan will only be as good as its implementers! On June 16 from 4-6 p.m., we will host a kick-off meeting at the Dickens Opera House that will map our implementation plans and coordinate committees to begin accomplishing different facets of the plan. I encourage everyone to remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. Through thoughtful collaborations and meaningful work plans, we will create the solid base needed to make sure this effort is here to stay – a new philosophy for Longmont – that will give us an identity we will be proud of for years to come. A Vision for a Community Farm What can a community farm do for Longmont? Ask anyone at the Ed and Ruth Lehman YMCA and they will tell you that a community garden and farm will make families healthier in Longmont and create community. With the rates of obesity on the rise – especially in the Hispanic community, the Y wants to teach families how to grow and prepare food and develop habits that last a life time. And, if while tending their garden, the families become better neighbors, then doesn’t that make our community a better place to live? The Longmont Community Foundation is proud to connect donors with causes they care about – like the Y’s goal of creating healthy families. What will be your story? The Longmont Community Foundation can help you design a charitable story that matches your wishes and desires for our community – now and for the future. In the U.S., he embarked on a lifelong study of birds and other animals that would eventually bring him fame and fortune. The Longmont Museum is very proud to present an exhibition of prints from the first edition of “The Birds of America.” The exhibition, from the John J. Audubon Museum in Kentucky, also includes original oil paintings, letters, and Audubon’s personal seal ring. John J. Audubon: American Artist and Naturalist will be on exhibit at the Longmont Museum from June 4 through September 18, 2011. Admission will be free for members, $7 adults, $5 students and seniors, children under 12 admitted free. Coffee and Conversation Friday, June 17, 9:30- 11:00 am Pre-registration required. Electrical boxes get makeover Colorful. Creative. Whimiscal. Realistic. Fun. While these words could describe just about any, or all, of the pieces in the Art in Public Places collection, this time they are calling out for your attention before they hit the streets. The Art in Public Places Commission has selected “Shock Art,” a community art project that will enhance the (otherwise) green electrical boxes throughout the City with color and creativity – as one of three 2011 projects. In 2011, five boxes have been selected to be painted, and the Commission is seeking the publics’ opinions as to how to paint them. Artists have been busy embellishing recycled shoe boxes in response to a local Call to Artists that was recently posted to gather works from the creative minds in the Longmont community. Artists’ submissions were displayed at the Muse Gallery during Artwalk, and citizens selected their favorites. From May 24- June 12, the artists’ submissions will be on display at the Longmont Museum (400 Quail Road) for continued voting. The AIPP Commission will determine the top five “winners” and these artists will paint their designated boxes during the month of July. And, everyone enjoys seeing artists at work, all artists will be painting on July 16, as visitors can take a tour – via car, bike or even foot – to see them all at work while enjoying refreshments and learning more about the Art in Public Places program. More information on Shock Art can be found at www.ci.longmont.co.us/museum/aipp. or call 303-651-8924.
