Your Investment at Work
Dear Friends,
It is a pleasure to write this letter of thanks for your continued support of
Longmont Humane Society (LHS) and the animals we serve. In 2014, your
investment in our work created lifesaving and life-changing opportunities for
homeless animals across our community and beyond.
Liz Smokowski and Jasper
“If having a soul
means being able
to feel love and
loyalty and
gratitude, then
animals are
better off than a
lot of humans.”
― James Herriot,
All Creatures Great and Small
You allowed LHS to continue working proactively and compassionately for
animals in need. Through your support, LHS provided shelter and care to more
than 4,300 animals last year; animals who were given a second chance at a safe,
healthy and happy future. Additionally, LHS’ public programs provided vital
resources to pet owners such as low-cost, dependable veterinary care and spay/
neuter services, behavioral support, and animal welfare education programs.
Looking ahead, we plan to invest in and improve our infrastructure. We will
continue creatively addressing overhead and talent management in order to spend
donor dollars with the utmost accountability. With your ongoing
partnership we will maximize our impact where it’s needed most—caring for
every animal that comes through our doors.
Thank you for making 2014 a success for the animals. Together, we will continue
to serve animals that are homeless and in need, and educate our community in
order to improve the lives of our special companions.
Warmest wishes, wags and purrs,
Liz Smokowski
Executive Director

Investing in New Beginnings
Shelter Training and Behavior Modification Program
Our training and behavior staff, along with highly-skilled volunteers, offer pets with behavioral challenges the opportunity for concentrated analysis and redirection in order to help animals find their best chance in a loving home. The

Investing in Our Community
Volunteer Program
Longmont Humane Society is fortunate to have a dedicated volunteer corps that provides support in nearly every aspect of our organization. We could not provide the shelter, services, and quality of life to the thousands of animals we
care for each year without the support of our volunteer community. Our TLC programs, Foster Care Program, Thrift
Store, Administrative Offices & Special Events are just a few of the areas in which we rely on volunteer support. During 2014, LHS:
 Benefitted from 952 volunteers donating over 60,000 hours to help us care for the animals.
 Welcomed 573 new volunteers to our organization in a variety of programs.
 Provided more than 11,000 hours of hands-on learning experience to volunteers in our youth programs while supporting shelter programs.
Education and Outreach
LHS provides a variety of humane education and outreach opportunities to our community, including:
Kids Workshops, LHS CARES—our free community education series, guided tours for school and community groups,
and delivers the court-ordered Responsible Pet Ownership Class through the City of Longmont Justice Services Department. Throughout 2014, Longmont Humane Society:
 Delivered humane education programing to 358 children representing a variety of school and civic groups.
 Presented information about LHS programs to 990 individuals through community events and
group meetings.
 Provided an innovative Engineering and Animal Welfare class, for 8-12 year olds, applying science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) components to a shelter environment.

Maintaining the Investment
An independent, nonprofit organization, Longmont Humane Society relies on
philanthropic support in order to fuel its mission. Generous contributions from
individuals, corporations, and foundations perpetuate the essential animal
welfare services we provide throughout Boulder County and beyond. As
important is ensuring that each dollar donated stretches as far as possible.
We continue to look for cost-saving solutions in every corner of
our organization to ensure the sustainability of this critical resource.
Resource Development



Refinanced the loan on our building, decreasing our annual payment
amount by 77%.
Raised $68,250 through participation in Colorado Gives Day.
Received nearly $153,000 through generous planned gifts from donors
who chose to leave their legacy by supporting homeless animals.
Special Events



Welcomed 360 guests to the March 2014 Homeward Bound event,
featuring 20 local restaurants, breweries, distilleries and more. The event
netted nearly $92,000 to support LHS’ mission.

festival in September, attended by families, athletes, vendors and pet-lovers.
Nearly 50 families attended the November Holiday Pet & Family photos,
receiving a collection of professional snapshots to share with loved ones.
LHS Thrift Store
An alternative revenue stream for the organization, the LHS Thrift
