A Word from
Our Pastor Fr. Ron Weissbeck
My dear family in Christ,
It is important that we all accept that we have a mission to share the Good News by deepening our faith and living it
in daily life. I invite all who read this column to ponder what it means to share a common priesthood and the ministry of
service that follows from this call.
One of the major changes derived from Vatican II was the expectation of a clear and direct involvement of parents
in the process of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. I have been involved in sacramental
preparation for many years and have observed that sometimes when parents receive news that they are expected to include
themselves the sacramental preparation for their child, it comes as a surprise, an inconvenience, or curiously, resistance. I
often wonder why this is so.
Since the Rite of Baptism was introduced for children in 1969, it clearly states that the parents are the first teachers
of their children in the faith. When I give the pre-baptism classes it is still common to seek this first sacrament to cleanse the
baby of original sin. This has been the primary way that baptism has been presented in the Catholic Church since the fourth
century. In fact, for many Catholics, it was believed that should a baby die without baptism he or she would end up in
limbo. In our changing times, many younger parents have never even heard of limbo! So the focus now is much richer than
the emphasis on the removal of original sin. The good news to share is that the child becomes of child of God in the midst
of the Church.
Baptism, then, is a grafting into the Body of Christ where, through the anointing with chrism, the person becomes
priest, prophet, and king. The parents are invited and challenged to bring this incorporation to maturity along with the grace
of the sacrament and the faith community. In other words, baptism is the first sacrament which offers us a share in the
ministry which the Holy Spirit has entrusted to the Church in the course of history. It is no longer just the ordained and
vowed who are charged with this mission, but all of us who are in Christ through the sacraments.
We all share a common priesthood as was reinforced by the documents of the Church (#10) that all are to live out
this priesthood which was bestowed at baptism. It is as we find in the letter of Peter, “you are a chosen race, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own so that you may announce the praises of him who call you out of darkness into
his wonderful light” (I Peter 2:9).

St. John the Baptist Catholic School will
host a Scholastic Book Fair beginning
on Saturday, October 3rd through
Wednesday, October 7th. Our fair will be
open for shopping in Benedict Hall after all
weekend Masses, and on school days
from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Funds
raised will help put new books into
classrooms and contribute to other needs
the school may have. School and parish
families, faculty, and our parish
community are invited to attend this fun
reading event that helps inspire children to
become lifelong readers. Any questions

2015” on Respect Life Sunday, October 4th.
From September 23rd through November 1st, you are
invited to join other Christians for a 40 Days for Life
campaign—forty days of prayer and fasting for an end to
abortion. You are also invited to stand and peacefully pray
during the 40-day vigil in front of Boulder Abortion Clinic,
1130 Alpine Avenue in Boulder, and to help spread the
word about abortion to your community. If you would

“Life Chain is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of
pro-life Americans standing for one hour praying for our

life from the moment of conception” (www.LifeChain.net).
The Longmont Life Chain, one small link in a coordinated
national chain of nearly 1,800 peaceful, prayerful protests,
will be held on Sunday, October 4th, from 2:00-3:00 p.m.
at the intersection of Hover and Nelson Roads. Signs will
be provided. We want to stress that this is a peaceful,
prayerful protest; no laws will be broken. Our purpose is
to promote public awareness of the tragedy of abortion.
Holy Hour of Adoration
For the 40 Days for Life campaign, St. John’s will set aside
a Holy Hour of Adoration in our Immaculate Heart of
Mary chapel each Wednesday of the campaign from 6:00
to 7:00 p.m., from September 23rd through October 29th.
We will pray for an end to abortion, and for the babies,
parents, grandparents, siblings, and abortion clinic workers.
For the past twenty years, the Longmont Life Chain has
been blessed by growing numbers of participants,
representing many denominations of the Christian

Over the years, I have heard people say things that point to the mediocrity of our spiritual practice, the way that we tend to
judge, compare and contrast with others, and the avoidance of the hard work, the fortitude that it takes to change our lives
for the better. “I got nothing out of this,” says the person who went to church one time.
Do you go to a department store only once because they did not have what you wanted that day? “I wish my life were
better.” Do you know what better is? Are you waiting for someone to make it better? “Meditation is a waste of
time.” But some of the other things you do are not? “I prefer to be by myself.” Do you know the difference between
solitude and isolation? “Thank God I am not like that person.” Maybe they are saying the same about you...

Last Sunday, two questions were discussed
among the catechumen and candidates: What
is faith? and What do Catholics believe?

Both are thought provoking questions. How
would you have answered them?
This Sunday and the next, we will be talking about the
Mass, the central prayer of our lives. It is not too late to
invite your friend or relative who might be interested in our
faith to join us on our journey of faith. We begin

Theology of the Body for Teens! We are so excited to be
able to offer this amazing program for our 9th - 12th grade
parishioners this year. The first class will be held on
October 6th in St. Catherine’s Room from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
through November 17th. The cost of the class is $25.00. It
will be instructed by our very own parishioner and trained
expert on the topic, Scott Entrekin. Please call Liz Smith to

EVANGELIZAR CONSISTE EN SER SERVIDORES DE LOS DEMÁS
Parece como si el evangelista Marcos nos quisiera mostrar qué lentos eran los apóstoles para entender lo
que Jesús les quería comunicar. Después del anuncio de Jesús, cuenta un episodio en el que muestran una
actitud totalmente contraria a lo que les está diciendo el Maestro y en la que quedan bastante malparados los
seguidores de Jesús: "Por el camino habían discutido quién era el más importante".
Los apóstoles -y nosotros, tantas veces- se dejan guiar aquí según la mentalidad humana. Este es el criterio
del mundo: ser más que los demás, ser los primeros, ocupar los mejores puestos, "salir en la foto", prosperar
nosotros, y despreocuparnos de los demás. Y eso puede pasar en la política y en la vida social y en la
familia y en la comunidad eclesial. Mientras que Jesús nos enseña que debemos ser los últimos, disponibles, preocupados
más de los demás que de nosotros mismos, servidores y no dueños. No es extraño que los oyentes de Jesús -de entonces y de
ahora- no entiendan y les "dé miedo" oír estas cosas.
A todos nos sirve la lección plástica de Jesús, cuando llamó a un niño y lo puso en medio de ellos y dijo que el que acoge a
un niño -que en la sociedad de entonces era tenido en nada y que no podrá devolver los favores- acoge al mismo Jesús. Se
nos invita a ser generosos, altruistas, dispuestos a hacer favores sin pasar factura. O sea, a seguir el ejemplo de Jesús, que
"no ha venido a ser servido sino a servir", que ayuda a todos y no pide nada, y que al final entrega su propia vida por la vida
de los demás.
Cada vez que comulgamos en la Eucaristía, comemos "el Cuerpo entregado por" y "la Sangre derramada por":
¿vamos asimilando esta lección insistente de Jesús de la entrega por los demás?
