DaVita, a Values Champion for DPS!
Denver Public Schools Foundation Annual Report 2013 /14 www.dpsfoundation.org Dear Valued Supporter, Think about your vision for Denver in 2020. What do you hope for our great city? A vibrant community? A thriving economy? A rich culture of arts and intellectual exchange? Denver Public Schools plays a vital role in ensuring these elements are pillars of our community, now and long into the future. By investing in our students today, you are among a group of visionary community leaders who are building the future for our city. For that, we thank you. Our schools are at a tipping point and your help is making a tremendous difference. In the last six years, DPS drove the highest rate of student progress of any major district in the state, increased the graduation rate by 23 percentage points and cut its dropout rate in half. But it’s not enough. Stark achievement gaps persist in our schools. Only 60 percent of our third grade students are reading at or above grade level. One in three of our ninth graders is not graduating within four years. The DPS Foundation exists to help DPS close these gaps and prepare every child for success in college and career. Our mission is to provide the resources and support our educators need to offer the same opportunities for success to EVERY child. With your help, we can and will eliminate the opportunity gaps. DPS has shared their vision for success in 2020, as detailed in the Denver Plan (visit denverplan.dpsk12.org to read it in full): – 80 percent of our students will be at or above grade level in reading and writing; – 80 percent of our students will attend a high-performing school; and – We will double the number of high school seniors who graduate college and career ready. Mission Vision In partnership with Denver Public Schools, we raise and manage funds, make strategic program investments, and serve as community leaders so that all students have the opportunity to succeed. How will DPS get there? By investing more in what’s working and embracing innovation, we can dramatically accelerate the progress DPS has already made. By providing a 21st century education, we will empower our students to graduate from high school prepared to thrive in college, career and life. Together, we can reach our ultimate goal and achieve our vision: Every Child Succeeds. In doing so, we create a better Denver for generations to come. Our students – our city – cannot wait. YOU are an integral part of this transformation. We need the engagement of every person in the community to truly change the course of education for our kids. We are all DPS. Enclosed, please read more about the impact of your support. Thank you for your partnership. In Denver Public Schools, outstanding educational achievements are the norm and all children have hope of a great future. 2 Tom Boasberg Brooke Brown Kristin Heath Colon Superintendent Chair, Board of Directors President & CEO Denver Public Schools Denver Public Schools Foundation Denver Public Schools Foundation 3 It is imperative that we close the opportunity gap and help ALL children become strong readers. With your help, we’re doing just that. Thanks to your support in the past year, the DPS Foundation has funded a number of highly effective literacy strategies. Consider the impact of your support: First grade students enrolled in the Each One Teach One literacy program are 2.6 times more likely to read at grade level compared to their peers. More than 15,000 books were sent home with students through book drives, in-kind donations and literacy projects. These books help children extend their learning into their home and engage their families and siblings in reading. Intensive literacy instruction is available to students in Spanish, strengthening their reading skills in their native language and allowing them to build upon their literacy foundation to read and write better in English. Volunteers from the community have spent 5,000 hours reading with students one-on-one, increasing students’ confidence in literacy. Target Corporation, a Literacy Champion for DPS! DONOR SPOTLIGHT 4 Thanks to the Target School Library Makeover program in partnership with the Heart of America Foundation, both Barnum Elementary and Godsman Elementary Schools received comprehensive library makeovers in the past two years. Read more of Target’s story of support on page 21. 5 “Our DPS”– Values, Culture, Leadership Components of “Our DPS” include: • A set of Shared Core Values– established by DPS educators district-wide • An annual event to reground in our values and make our commitments for the year ahead • Values and leadership-based professional development opportunities; recognition events; and a district-wide employee engagement and feedback survey Early indicators of progress include: • Teams that report a strong culture of shared values have higher student growth rates • Individuals who participate in leadership programs commit to staying in DPS longer than the average tenure • Teams with staff who have attended leadership programs are more positive about the direction of the district and see their role as important in accomplishing our shared vision Great teachers and transformational school leaders are essential to achieving our goal of seeing Every Child Succeed. Research has consistently shown the positive impact of employee engagement on an organization’s ability to meet their goals. In education, where the stakes are so high and the work is so challenging, this initiative is even more critical. Every Child Succeeds! DPS Shared Core Values Students First / Integrity / Equity / Collaboration / Accountability / Fun The Mission That Binds Us DaVita, a Values Champion for DPS! DONOR SPOTLIGHT DaVita has been a thought partner and a funder for DPS’ Values-Based Leadership program since it launched in 2011. Thank you DaVita for helping the district launch this vitally important work. To read more of the DaVita story of support, please turn to page 29. Educators are mission driven. They care about their students. And this work is not easy. Creating a culture that actively celebrates our Shared Core Values enables teachers and school leaders to connect with the very things that brought them to this challenging and rewarding profession in the first place. With your help, DPS has made an intentional investment in our people and our culture. Our educators’ work in our classrooms today is shaping the generation that will lead us tomorrow. These investments are transformational. DPS is building this environment by providing the roadmap, resources and professional development opportunities to map all of our work, every day, to the mission and Shared Core Values that bind us. 6 7 Students engaged in a CTE education pathway have up to a 30 percent greater likelihood of graduating high school than their counterparts. Denver Public Schools has set out on an ambitious path to dramatically improve how we’re preparing students for college and career. By implementing a pipeline of Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, DPS is preparing our future leaders for the very jobs that are in highest demand in Denver – ensuring that we are strengthening our city and our students’ futures. In April 2014, DPS was chosen as one of 24 organizations nationwide to receive a four-year $7 million Department of Labor grant to expand and enhance career-focused pathways in STEM. Thanks to community support, the DPS Foundation leveraged an additional $2.4 million in private resources and support required to secure the grant. Starting in the 2014-15 school year, in partnership with the City of Denver, the Office of Economic Development, two and four year colleges and universities, and corporate and industry partners, DPS has launched 8 four new curriculum pathways focused on STEM-related careers in DPS high schools, and will launch a fifth in 2015–16. Real world applications Pathways courses all involve work-based learning such as job shadowing, internships and site visits. These experiences continually expose students to applications for their learning and skills in industry and higher education. Focused and engaged students Students enrolled in CTE pathways are far more likely to complete their studies and graduate from high school; and are far more likely to become the future leaders we need to help Denver thrive. DPS CTE Pathways: • Engineering & Energy • Biomedical & Healthcare • Applied Manufacturing • Digital & IT • Finance What makes CTE Pathways so successful? A clear sight line to the future CTE students’ studies are tied at every step to the opportunities that will be available to them after graduation – whether it’s higher education and graduate work, or immediate employment and a successful career. Denver is leading the nation in this work, and creating a pipeline of talent specifically and strategically built to serve our city – and our nation – now and in the future. Thank you for being part of this work. Read more about CTE pathways and how you can engage at www.dpsfoundation.org/CTE. QEP Resources, a STEM Champion for DPS! DONOR SPOTLIGHT QEP – one of many organizations supporting this work – provided the first major gift which enabled the expansion of DPS’ CTE vision, and ultimately helped secure the U.S. Department of Labor grant. Read more of QEP’s story of support on page 24. 9 Overall Direct Impact THANK YOU to our 52 active partners in 2013-14 who contributed: • Over $500,000 in direct financial and in-kind support to schools • More than 9,000 volunteer hours Impact on Students • Meaningful mentor relationships with trusted adults • One-on-one academic support • Learning about career opportunities and seeing the path to success personified • Increased confidence and engagement in school The School Partners Program creates meaningful partnerships between Denver’s community and Denver Public Schools. Through this unique program, local businesses and community organizations (large and small) team up with specific DPS schools to contribute to the success of every DPS student. Impact on Volunteers • Contributing to the success of students and schools • Feeling engaged in meaningful volunteer work; linked to satisfaction in the workplace and higher productivity • Seeing firsthand the challenges and successes of Colorado’s largest school system, making them better and more informed citizens around education policy The School Partners Program is a collaboration between the DPS Foundation, Mile High United Way and DPS. To learn more and become a partner today, visit www.dpsfoundation.org/partner. This relationship is important because it’s personal. My husband and I have been tutoring the same student for three years now. While we believe there is certainly an academic impact to our time together, it’s even more important to us to have that relationship where he sees a reliable adult showing up, being interested in him and cheering him on as a positive role model. We’re in this for the long haul; we intend to see Cesar go to college. I hope we’re making a difference in his life; he’s certainly made a huge difference in ours. We feel so fortunate that this type of engagement is not only made possible by, but is truly supported by our firm. – Mave Gasaway, Davis Graham & Stubbs, LLP, Volunteer Tutor, School Partners Program Davis Graham & Stubbs, a School Partner Champion for DPS! PARTNER SPOTLIGHT 10 Davis Graham & Stubbs, LLP (DGS) has long held education as one of its core values, and has partnered with various DPS schools over the last decade. Recently DGS was paired with University Prep, where they’ve launched a tutoring program. In addition to weekly tutoring sessions, the firm has raised money for 200 school uniforms. DGS has also sponsored holiday events for the students, gifted age-appropriate books, and hosted year-end celebrations for the scholars on their playground. Currently, 36 DGS attorneys and staff tutor, ranging from partners to attorneys to staff members, and countless others have engaged in the giving campaign and annual celebrations. Community service and philanthropy are core pillars for DGS, and giving back is a collective activity. The DPS Foundation extends our gratitude to Davis Graham & Stubbs for their commitment to DPS, and for modeling the type of multi-faceted, deep engagement that makes School Partnerships so powerful. I’ve spent my entire life in DPS schools, learning from DPS teachers and coaches. Thanks to their support, I’m attending college with a full-ride scholarship, on track to earn my PhD and become the first doctor in my family. My education in DPS was enriched with after-school programs, arts courses, sports, field trips, and so much more. Many of these things, which shaped my life, are possible in our schools because of private funding. You gave me the opportunities to succeed, at every step, from kindergarten until my graduation day. – Daniel Ramirez, 2014 North High School graduate, University of Colorado Denver, Pre-med. Read more of Daniel’s story at www.dpsfoundation.org/daniel. A heartfelt thanks to 2014 Achieve Gala Chairs, Kathryn and Eric Albright and Holiday and Stan Goodreau, for their leadership and commitment to DPS students! At QEP, we recognize the importance of investing in the community. STEM fields have such tremendous opportunities for our young people. Even if a student’s interests are outside STEM fields, there is a technical basis for what we do today that translates across so many industries. I often reflect back to when I was exposed to engineering. I remember thinking to myself, ‘so what does an engineer do all day?’ We really value the opportunity to support not just the curriculum, but also to bring students into the field to see what it means to operate a well, to operate a plant. I see these strategies as core to keeping students motivated, because they have an understanding of how their fundamental classes and lessons will apply in the field. DPS is truly leading in this field through their vision and leadership. We are humbled to be a part of something so extremely large and transformational. – Randy Judge, VP of Production, QEP Resources. QEP provided the first major gift which enabled the expansion of DPS’ CTE vision, and ultimately helped secure a $7 million Department of Labor Grant (detailed on page 9). We’re so grateful for the vision of those who see great things before they’ve even taken full shape. Thank you, QEP. I think there’s amazing potential in our Partnership. This would be one incredibly clear example of a company taking the skills that it has and applying them in a sustained, thoughtful partnership to a not-for-profit, and in so doing, reinvigorating their own intellectual thinking. For me, this is like a dream, because I’m harnessing my village in another way to do good, and it harnesses what we’re best at. – Kent Thiry, Chairman & CEO, DaVita At DaVita, we believe that happier people working together collaboratively give better care to our patients. When we started looking at ways we could give back right here in Denver, where our world headquarters are based, we realized that teachers and nurses aren’t so different after all; they are driven by an inner desire to serve. Our values-based leadership and culture work has made a huge difference at DaVita. We find that we have better retention and better job satisfaction. So we partnered with DPS to share some of the lessons we’ve learned after years of doing this work. They took it from there. DPS has created something so unique and singular to their culture and values. We’ve been honored to partner with DPS in launching this work without reinventing the wheel. We applaud the educators in DPS for their innovation and focus in this area. – Jo Rude, Director of Wisdom, Operations, DaVita DaVita has been a thought partner and funder for DPS’ values-based leadership program since it launched in 2012. Thank you DaVita, for helping the district launch this vitally important work, detailed on page 6. To read more of the DaVita story of support, please visit www.dpsfoundation.org/supportstories. The idea that a public school system can run just on taxpayer money – it’s just not possible. We have to do more than that. Taxes are mandatory; private support for schools is a commitment to our community. If you’re going to be part of the community in Denver, DPS is absolutely an institution you need to be involved with. One of my greatest joys is going to visit a school to see the program I am investing in. When I see the faces of the children light up as they come through the door for their afterschool activities of fitness, learning and a hot meal – there is no doubt my contribution is being used to make a real difference. The staff is also incredibly inspiring. Whether it’s the cook who says these students are like her own kids, or the supervisor who makes a donation to support the program out of her own paycheck, seeing this program and its committed providers firsthand really connects me to the impact of my gift. Mary Brauer is a longtime supporter and a champion for DPS after-school programs, recently joining our major giving initiative, the Society for Educational Excellence in Denver (SEED).
