“Hooked on Books”
Campaign Needs
Your Support!
The Alliance for Literacy, a partnership of schools,
businesses and community organizations, has come
up with a campaign this year to get kids excited
about reading. Students created the title – “Hooked
on Books.” It uses positive peer pressure from students to get their friends excited about reading.
One of the prime motivations for kids to get involved in “Hooked on Books” is doing contests with
prizes. The first contest challenged students to come
up with ideas to get their friends hooked on reading, and an iPad, a BMX bike and a Kindle were
offered as prizes. Program participation has greatly
exceeded expectations, and kids are enthusiastic
about choosing books they really want to read and
can keep.
To find out how you can support the program, contact Rayna Dineen at (505) 438-8585 or allianceforliteracy@yahoo.com.
Choices Program
Recruiting Volunteers
The Chamber’s CHOICES program, designed to
prevent dropouts among seventh and eighth graders in the public schools, is recruiting volunteers
to go into middle school classrooms this school
year to engage the students in a presentation involving interactive, real-life financial and quality
of life situations they will encounter if they make
the choice to drop out. The program requires a
brief training and a two-hour commitment. It is
financed by Thornburg Investment Management
and Century Bank. For more information on the
presentation call David Sidebottom, program

At this time the Chamber wants to call to mind the
accomplishments of Michael Cerletti, longtime friend
and supporter of the Chamber, who died in early
January. Cerletti served as Chair of the Chamber
Board from 1983-1985. He was an exemplary promoter of the tourism industry, serving as the first Cabinet Secretary of Tourism when that department was
established in 1991 and filling that position again
from 2004-2010. He also had a distinguished career
as an area businessman. He was a strong backer and
partner of the Chamber in many endeavors, and his
presence in the community will be missed.

“The event was very helpful
to me as a new business. I
appreciated the great booth
location. There were lots of
networking opportunities and
I got some good leads. So
thanks again. Great work!”
