‘We have made State governments
equal partners in the quest for
national development, building the
spirit of Team India’
New Delhi, May 26 (PTI):
Completing one year in office, Prime Minister Narendra
Modi today enlisted the work done by his government,
ranging from rejuvenating the economy to initiatives for the
poor, and said this is just the beginning in the endeavour
to transform the quality of life of people.
In an open letter to the people, he said, ‘we have
been able to restore trust in the government’, ensure a
‘corruption-free’ rule and made State governments equal
partners in the quest for national development, building
the spirit of Team India.
Modi said he had devoted every element of his ‘body
and spirit’ in fulfilling with fullest sincerity and honesty the
responsibility and honour entrusted by people a year ago
in him of serving them as ‘pradhan sevak’ (prime worker).
‘We assumed office at a time when confidence in India story
was waning. Unabated corruption and indecisiveness had
paralysed the government. People had been left helpless
against ever-climbing inflation and economic insecurity.
‘Urgent and decisive action was needed,’ Modi said.
While presenting the report-card of one year in office, he
said his government systematically went about addressing these challenges. Runaway prices were immediately
brought under control. The languishing economy was
rejuvenated, building on stable and policy-driven proactive
governance, the Prime Minister said.

q 18 landmark buildings to be lit up in orange light tomorrow
NT Bureau
Chennai, May 26:
Tomorrow is World Multiple Sclerosis Day and
Chennai is all ready to create awareness about
it. Eighteen of the city’s landmark buildings will
be lit up in orange light in the evening as an
observation to MS.
Lighting up the 18 buildings in the city will also
mark the 18 years of MSSI(The Multiple Sclerosis Society of India) in Chennai.
MS is a disorder of the central nervous system
(CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, optic
nerves and spinal cord. This disorder damages
the protective insulation (known as myelin)
surrounding the nerves (known as axons), and
may also damage the nerves within the CNS.
As a result, nerve impulses carrying messages
from the brain and spinal cord may short circuit,
causing reduced or lost bodily function. Young
adults especially in the age group of 20-30 are
the most vulnerable to Multiple Sclerosis (MS),
but an early intervention and general awareness
can greatly improve the lives of MS patients.
Multiple Sclerosis or MS is an auto immune and
progressive disease of the brain and central nervous system in which the immune system attacks
the nerve. As the disease has no cure, it needs
to be managed with exercise and medications
that helps in delaying the progression of the
disease. If MS is left untreated, patients
may eventually develop
severe and irrevocable
disabilities.
According to the
medical experts in
the city, no survey
of MS patients has
been conducted in
India but according to specialists
the number could be
above 2 lakh.
The Multiple Sclerosis Society
of India is non-profit voluntary organisation that has been working towards
the elimination of MS in India. The organisation

Good beginning
espite the incessant propaganda by a section of the Opposition,
there is no evidence to suggest that the Modi Government in
its first year in power has let down the business community. It is
also utter nonsense to allege that it has promoted crony capitalism.
The charge is mouthed parrot-like by Rahul Gandhi and others
in the Congress Party only in the hope that it would burnish
their pro-poor image. Whether this crude and false propaganda
would yield any electoral dividend only time will tell, but if the
proof of the pudding lies in its eating there is evidence to suggest that India Inc. is impressed with the Modi Governments’
performance, even though some sections are still hedging their
bets on the overall scheme of things. In fact a survey conducted
by a business daily revealed that some top business executives
believed that the Government had not done enough to revive the
economy. Seventy percent of the respondents felt that conditions
had not improved in the first year of Prime Minister Modi having
a stable majority in the Lok Sabha.
But, what is more significant, 75 percent expected things to improve in the coming year in view of the several incremental steps
taken by the Government. The CEOs gave Modi seven out of ten
for his performance thus far. Admittedly, most inexplicably, the
Government did not even go for the low hanging fruit which could
have further helped improve the business environment. For instance,
there was a self-goal on the question of minimum alternative tax
slapped retrospectively on various Indian and foreign institutional
investors. Only when it caused a sharp reaction on the bourses,
and the FIIs threatened to quit in droves, did the Finance Minister
ask the tax department to have a relook at the tenability of those
notices. In fact, the diffidence of the Modi Government in this
regard led many to complain that it too has persisted with the old
`tax terrorism.’
The problem with the Modi Government is that it has not believed in its own rhetoric. Having come on a business-friendly
platform, having committed itself to facilitating the ease of doing business, it can be said that it has been strangely reluctant
in taking even those decisions which did not entail additional
burden on the exchequer. For instance, it remains confused on
multi-brand retail. Even in the case of reforms in the factor
markets, that is, land, labour and capital markets, it has shown
little enthusiasm. Without unshackling labour markets it will
be hard to benefit employees and employers from the artificial
socialist era brakes on growth.
It has been established beyond an iota of doubt that the stringent
labour laws militate against optimization of employment and
hinder growth. As it is, the authorities look the other way when
these impractical laws are violated with impunity even by small
and medium sector employers. The Centre should have taken
the lead in this regard, though the initiative of the Rajasthan
Government has been followed by several other States. The
fact is that the old socialist era laws have become a drag on the
economy. This mindset needs to change if the economy is to
grow at a decent seven-plus percent.
The passage of the stringent black money legislation meant to
penalize those holding such assets at home or abroad is welcome.
Such a law has not been passed since the founding of the Republic,
and yet the Congress megaphones have the gall to call it a government of crony capitalists. Such critics need to have a reality check.
There is a belief that the BJP government is reluctant to take
business-friendly decisions for fear of being dubbed as a government of corproates, or Modi believes that business can be left to
fend for itself. The truth is that more needs to be done to rev up
the economic engine. Admittedly, its pro-poor record in the year is
rather impressive. The Jan Dhan scheme, health and life insurance
schemes etc., are all mass programmes aimed at offering a protective
umbrella to the needy in emergencies. All in all, the Government
has been pro-poor and now it can focus on the corporates too.

MOROCCO:
Three Moroccan men accused of
homosexuality have been sentenced
to three years in jail each by a court in
north-eastern Morocco, a rights group
said on Monday.
Homosexuality and sexual relations
outside marriage are forbidden in the
conservative North African nation.
Hassan Ammari of the Moroccan
Association of Human Rights (AMDH)
told AFP the sentence was handed
down on Friday by a court in the city
of Taourirt, confirming media reports.
Two of the men, a mechanic in
his 40s and a man in his 20s, were
‘caught in the act’ in the mechanic`s
workshop by police acting on a tip-off,
Ammari said. They were arrested and
during their detention they said they
had met through a mutual friend, who
was also arrested, and admitted having sexual relations.
Moroccan authorities have declined
to comment. Article 489 of Morocco`s
penal code states that any one found
guilty of carrying out ‘a deviant act
with a person of the same sex’ will be
jailed for to up to three years.
In March, Human Rights Watch
called on Morocco to decriminalise
homosexuality, saying that ‘criminalising consensual, adult homosexual
conduct violates international human

L&T Finance Holdings on Monday announced its results for

NT Bureau
Chennai, May 26:
Bifurcation of Chairman and Managing Director’s post may not augur well
for the public sector banks as it may
lead to inefficiencies and bureaucratic
hassles rather than improvement,
ASSOCHAM said in a report.
Moreover, proposed roping in of
private sector executives may turn out
to be a regressive step as public sector banks have completely different
culture and ownership as compared
to their private sector counterparts,
the report said.
Public sector banks control about 75
per cent of the total banking business.
‘There are fears that one more layer
even though non-executive position
may lead to some kind of inefficiencies’, said ASSOCHAM secretary
general D S Rawat.
Bifurcation could also lead to differences between managing director
and chairman at times leading to
delay in decision making and other
impediments in the growth and expansion of the bank unlike the private
sector, he said.
‘Concerns are there that large loan
sanction which needs board approval
if there is difference of opinion between chairman and CEO could get
delayed. Delay in sanctioning loan
would have adverse impact on the
industry’, he said.
Banking system, which is considered to be the life line of the economy
may get choked due to want of fund
and subsequently lead to slowdown
of the GDP growth.
This has been witnessed in the past
and India Inc has been highlighting
this issue from various platforms.
Another practical difficulty, it said,
could be that if the two top board
members are not in good terms , then
also the loan sanctioning process
would take a back seat as the CEO
would not clear any loan proposal.
With regard to the HSBC list, Das
said, ‘All the assessment which
require to be completed before 31
March, they have been completed.
Thanks to international cooperation
and thanks to the initiative taken by
the government in the recent months
we were able to get a lot of other additional information from other countries
and foreign jurisdiction’.
This has opened up new areas of
investigation, he said, adding, ‘all
these cases, all these areas I would
emphasise that investigation need
to be completed expeditiously and
finally’.
Das also asked tax officials to effectively share information with Central
Economic Intelligence Bureau to
check tax evasion and fraud.
With regard to direct tax collection
target, Das said, ‘The target of 7.98

very realistic target, aligned with the
kind of GDP growth which has been

‘Lord’s loss won’t
temper our aggression’
q McCullum keen to continue playing attacking cricket
‘Revival game
is like a debut
match for Pak’
Karachi, May 26 (PTI):
Pakistan’s long serving Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq is overjoyed
at the response of the Pakistani
people to the return of international cricket on home soil after
six long years.
Misbah, who has been Test
captain since late 2010 and retired
as captain from one-day cricket
after the World Cup, said the enthusiasm of the crowd in Lahore
during the first Twenty20 against
Zimbabwe was unparallelled.
It didn’t seem like it was the
revival of international cricket in
Pakistan, it was as if the team
was playing its debut match, Misbah said according to the Dawn
newspaper.
The senior batsman said he
had only witnessed a similar sort
of atmosphere while playing in
India. ‘I have never seen this kind
of support before, the crowd was
enjoying and appreciating each
and every run taken by the team,’
he said.
International cricket returned to
Pakistan last weekend when Zimbabwe played two T20 matches
at the Gaddafi stadium before jam
packed houses. Misbah felt that in
the six years no Test team toured
Pakistan and the national team was
robbed of from getting the crucial
home advantage.
‘Home advantage is huge because
you are aware of the pitch and other
conditions. We have seen the example of New Zealand in this year’s
World Cup; they lost the cup when
they played their only game outside
New Zealand.’
Reza Hasan
fails dope test
Karachi, May 26 (PTI):
The Pakistan Cricket Board imposed a two-year ban on left-arm
spinner Raza Hasan for failing a
doping test earlier this year.
The PCB said in a statement that
the ban was imposed after Hasan
failed to file an appeal within 14
days after being issued a showcause notice by the Board.
As per anti-doping rules he was
sent a notice of charge by the
PCB on March 24, 2015 which
he received in person and as per
anti-doping rules he had to send
a written request for a hearing
within 14 days which he failed do,
the statement said.
CHENNAI
London, May 26:
New Zealand will not let
their tight loss to England
in the classic test at Lord`s
lessen their resolve to
keep playing aggressive
cricket, captain Brendon McCullum
said.
It
hurts a lot.
I certainly won`t
lie. But at the
same time there is an
element of pride that
we continue to play the
style of cricket that we
know gives us our
greatest chance
— McCullum
New Zealand`s batsmen
scored over 700 runs and their
bowlers took all 20 wickets but
England completed a 124-run
win in the final 10 overs of the
fifth day on Monday courtesy of
the all-round brilliance of New
Zealand-born Ben Stokes.
The Black Caps` attacking
mindset drove them to a maiden World Cup final in March
and McCullum said his team
would not alter their style for
the second and final test at
Headingley starting on Friday.
It hurts a lot. I certainly
won`t lie. But at the same
time there is an element of
pride that we continue to
play the style of cricket
that we know gives us our
greatest chance,’ McCullum told reporters.
‘There are times we know
that teams are going to be
able to stand up to you and
withstand the pressure you
apply to them and come out
on top.
‘When that happens you`ve
just go to doff your cap and
say well played to them and
make sure that next time you
get that opportunity you go
hard again and make sure
that you`re asking the same
sort of questions.
‘Who knows at Headingley
... we may see some different
results but I`m pretty sure our
guys will continue to play the
same style of cricket which we
have in this test match and
which we have done over the
last 18 months.’
McCullum said being defensive had not worked for New
Zealand, who have not lost
a test series home or away
since being swept 2-0 on their
last England tour in 2013.
‘For a long time we had that
kind of mentality and it didn`t
serve us anywhere near as
well as the aggressive mindset that we are now taking into
games,’ the 33-year-old said.
‘You`ve got to make sure
you`re authentic to that style,
under pressure or whether
you`re on top.
‘We scored over 720 runs in
this test match. We took 20
wickets. We ticked off a lot of
things which normally would
lead to a test win but in some
of the key moments we weren`t
quite able to come out on top.
‘The message to the team
will be that we weren`t far
away.’
‘There`s certainly no kneejerk reaction to a performance
like this. For the most of it, we
were pretty good.’

Real Madrid fires
coach Ancelotti
Madrid, May 26:
Real Madrid fired their coach Carlo
Ancelotti on Monday as the popular
Italian paid for a disappointing season
without a major trophy.
Ancelotti, 55, had lead Real to their
10th elite European title last season
but was sacked after the club finished
runners-up to Barcelona in La Liga
and lost to Juventus in the semi-finals
of this year`s Champions League.
Club president Florentino Perez
told a news conference at the club`s
Santiago Bernabeu stadium that
the services of the former AC Milan,
Chelsea and Paris St Germain coach
were no longer required.
The board of directors has taken the
decision to relieve Carlo Ancelotti of
his duties as coach of Real Madrid,’
Perez said.
‘It has been a very hard decision...
but Real Madrid is extremely demanding and we believe it is time
to give a new impulse’, to the club,
Perez continued.
‘The time has come for a change
of direction that will allow us to win
more titles and reach our peak competitive level ahead of a new era,’
said the straight-talking Perez, who
explained that Real Madrid was a
worldwide reference and no-one who
worked there could expect an easy
time.The mild-mannered Ancelotti
took to Twitter immediately after the
announcement to thank the players
and fans for the memories.
Ancelotti, who succeed Jose
Mourinho as Real boss in June
2013, leaves Madrid having failed
to convert a record run of victories
last year into silverware at the end
of this season.
Madrid had won the Club World
Cup on a streak of 22 consecutive
wins between September and December to add to the Copa del Rey
and UEFA Super Cup in a record
four-trophy haul in 2014.
But they were beaten to the Spanish league title by a treble-seeking
Barcelona and eliminated by city
rivals Atletico Madrid in the Copa
del Rey.

Roma stars celebrate after scoring a goal
Roma stuns Lazio to
enter Champions League
Rome, May 26:
A late glancing header from defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa earned
Roma a stunning 2-1 victory over
Lazio in a fiery city derby on Monday
to secure the Giallorossi`s automatic
entry to the Champions League.
Hosts Lazio looked to have salvaged a share of the spoils at the
Stadio Olimpico when late substitute
Filip Djordjevic headed Miroslav
Klose`s headed cutback past Morgan
Da Sanctis in the Roma goal to level
Juan Iturbe`s 73rd minute opener for
the visitors.
A draw would have secured at least
a third-place finish for Lazio and
a place in the Champions League
play-offs.
But Yanga-Mbiwa turned the match
on its head with a glancing header
from a free kick five minutes from
time to secure the points for Rudi
Garcia`s side.
The result leaves Roma in second
place, 16 points behind recentlycrowned champions Juventus but
four ahead of Lazio with one game
remaining this season.
Lazio remain third but Stefano
Pioli`s men, who sit three points
ahead of Napoli, now require a point
from their trip to Napoli in their final
game of the campaign next week,
when Roma host Palermo.
If unsuccessful, it would be a
spectacular fall from grace for Lazio,
who have been playing some of the
best football in Italy`s top flight since
January.
Lazio came into the derby with tired
legs after a 2-1 Cup final defeat to Juventus last week and had a lightning
start only to spurn two clear chances
for an early lead.
Italy international Antonio Candreva
brought a reflex save from Morgan De
Sanctis when a long ball from midfield
caught the Roma defence unawares,
cut in at the byeline and fired from a
tight angle.Roma survived a bigger
scare moments later when nerves
got the better of Vasilis Torosidis as
the defender tried to clear.
His effort towards the left touchline
got only as far as Candreva, who
delivered a perfect ball into the box
as Klose ghosted in only to power a
header wide of the right post.
Shaky in defence, Roma were
hardly making an impression up front
either with defenders Dusan Basta
and Dutchman Stefan De Vrij keeping
the visitors on a tight rein.
The ball broke for Roma winger
Alessandro Florenzi on the quarter
hour but despite his pace taking him
to the right byeline there were no
takers for his cutback.
Lazio started just as strongly after
the break, Dusan Basta pouncing on
a poor headed clearance from Vasilis
Torosidis to fire low inches past De
Sanctis`s far post.
A Senad Lulic challenge on Totti
which left the captain rolling on the
ground was the first flash point of the
second half and the defender, issued
one of his side`s three yellow cards in
the opening half, was lucky to escape
a second caution.
He was replaced by Luis Cavanda
soon after as Lazio kept the momentum, threatening just before the hour
when Klose headed back into the
area for Stefano Mauri to see his
overhead kick blocked.

‘Modi govt brought India
out of policy paralysis’
New Delhi, May 26:
On the completion of one year of
Narendra Modi’s NDA government on Tuesday, Bharatiya
Janata Party president Amit Shah
today said that the government
has brought the country out of
policy paralysis.
‘The government has come out
of policy paralysis. If there is a
problem, then the government
proactively, if required, makes changes in policies,’ he said while addressing
media at the BJP headquarters in the
national capital.
Shah added that after Narendra
Modi became prime minister, he has
restored the credibility of the PMO.
‘The country did not have faith in the
previous government. The trust deficit
is over now. Now, the world is acknowledging and watching India’s progress.’
He said that the NDA government
is a visible government and is more
‘proactive’ than even the media.
Whether there are floods in Jammu
and Kashmir or earthquake in Nepal,
the government is quick to respond,
he added.
On the issue of tussle between
the Delhi government and Centre,
the party president added that the

issue will be settled by courts.
Speaking about the victory of the
Bharatiya Janata Party in
the 2014 Lok Sabha polls,
Shah said, ‘After 30 years,
for the first time after Independence, a non-Congress
government was elected
with majority by the people.’
Talking about corruption
scandals and scams surfacing during the tenure of the previous
governments, Shah said, ‘In one year,
even our opposition have not been
able to allege corruption charges
against the present government.’
He added that the over Rs 2 lakh
crore have been added to the government’s treasury by transparent
auction of the coal mines.
On the issue of black money, Shah
said that the Modi government is
determined to tackle the issue of
black money.
‘Congress Ministers levelled several allegations against the BJP and
even asked them to reveal names
of those with bank accounts abroad.
Under international treaty, the Indian
government cannot reveal the names
of people with accounts abroad as
it would be a violation and then we

directions of then Telecom Minister Dayanidhi
Maran, who was opposed to the paper being
issued.
Baijal who was the Chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) from 2003 to 2006
has also accused the former Prime Minister of
having approved the actions of all Ministers and
Ministries. He even claims that Manmohan is
equally culpable for all the losses computed by
the CAG in 2G spectrum allocation case.
Allegations on ex-PM
l Manmohan Singh’s former media advisor Sanjay Baru’s book ‘The Accidental Prime Minister,’
was not really kind to the former Prime Minister
as it had a lot of allegations against him.
l Former Coal Secretary P C Parekh’s book
‘Crusader or Conspirator? Coalgate and other
Truths’ embarrassed Manmohan Singh further
by citing that he had little political authority.
The reactions
The BJP has reacted to this allegation against Manmohan Singh
made by Baijal and said that this was evidence of corruption of the
most venomous kind. BJP spokesperson MJ Akbar said, ‘It’s a predictable coincidence that on the first anniversary of PM Modi’s government,
Baijal has explained everything. We are talking of the highest in the land
when we talk about the Prime Minister. This is evidence of everything
the BJP has been saying. This is evidence of the most shocking truth,
of corruption of the most venomous kind which had become a cancer
in the UPA. This brings to an end the nonsense Congress has started
about BJP being pro-corporate. It is actually Congress which is really
hand in glove with massively corrupt crony capitalists’.

Chennai, May 26:
The vishing scam which has recently been keeping the police on its toes,
got a new turn with the arrest of three

According to police sources, Deep
Kumar (33), Praveen Kumar (32)
from New Delhi, and Indrajeet (35)
from Dindigul, were taken to custody
in connection with the scam that was
busted by the city police in April.
It may be noted that the case came
to light after ICICI Bank-Ambattur
Branch Manager Prakash filed a
complaint with the City Police Commissioner S George, that 42 of his
customers’ debit and credit card
details, such as CVV, OTP numbers
and expiry dates were being collected
in an unauthorised way and Rs five
lakh was taken through Airtel Money
services.
Following the complaint, Ashraf

It was reported that the duo cheated
scores of people to the tune of crores

How to avoid the web

nationwide fraud.
Investigations have revealed that
Indrajeet was roped in to make fake
calls to bank customers posing as a
bank representative. After enticing
them with offers or clarification on
transactions, he would note down pin
numbers and dates.
Meanwhile, Deep Kumar and
Praveen who ran a sim card shop
in New Delhi, allegedly saved copies of identity and address proofs of
customers and put fake signatures
on them to avail duplicate sim cards
which are subsequently given to

It has been a splendid May for actor and producer Suriya. His maiden production venture
36 Vayadhinilae (starring Jyothika) was out recently and made it big. His much-awaited
action avatar Masss Engira Masilamani is gearing up for release this week-end.
An elated Suriya says, ‘I thank womenfolk for making 36 Vayadhinilae a bumper hit.
Love for Jyothika has been phenomenal. Meanwhile, in Mass Engira Masilamani, we are
trying out something innovative and fresh for Tamil audience’.
Masss..., directed by Venkat Prabhu, stars Nayanthara opposite him. Music is by
Yuvanshankar Raja. Produced by Studio Green, it is slated for release on 29 May.
A QUICK CHAT WITH SURIYA
Q: On working with Venkat Prabhu
A: Venkat Prabhu as a filmmaker always impressed me. He tries his hands at various
genres. We wanted to do a film together even before Maattrraan, and tried something which didn’t work out then. One day he came up with the plot of Masss and
it had new elements that neither he nor I had experimented with before, and
that excited me.
Q: What is Masss.. all about?
Samantha
paired with
Dhanush again
A: It will be a feel-good movie which I don’t want to tag as a horror-comedy. I play
two characters in the movie. One is Maasilamani from whom the film got its title and
next is Shakti. Maasilamani is a conman.
The film revolves around Maasilamani and what happens to him when he encounters a challenging person who is at par with him.
Q: On your co-star Nayanthara?
A: It is my third film with Nayanthara, after Aadhavan and Ghajini. And over
the years I have felt a difference in her acting, how she presents herself and
conveys her expression onscreen.
Suriya
T
he shooting of Dhanush’s VIP 2, directed by Velraj,
is in full swing. Samantha plays one of his romantic
interests in it and Dhanush will be seen in two different
appearances.
The movie features music composed by Anirudh. Meanwhile, Samantha, who is on a signing spree in Tamil, has
bagged one more film opposite Dhanush, which will start
rolling from September.
The film, titled Vada Chennai, will be directed by Vetw
rimaaran, with whom
Dhanush had

Q: Did you expect 36 Vayadhinilae to become such a big hit?
A: We had immense faith in the script. I thank all the people who have accepted 36 Vayadhinilae. I also thank director Rosshan Andrews and music composer Santhosh Narayanan for gifting us with such a beautiful and strong film.
Q: About your home production?
A: We at 2D Entertainments, always strive to give quality entertainment. We are
making movies for the entire family and children like 36 Vayadhinilae and Haiku. I am
in no worry, nor have I fixed an idea for the number of films to make in a year. It’s just
that I strive to good films to the audience always.
Q: Will you share screen with Jyothika again?
A: We are hearing scripts but nothing has been finalised yet. May be by next year there
will be a concrete project.
