Court matters
he Bombay High Court today deferred till 13 July
an appeal filed by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan
against the five-year sentence awarded to him in the hitand-run case, after the actor’s lawyer sought time to check
documents. Although the ‘paper book’ (compilation of
evidence and documents) is ready and copies have been
served to both the sides by the court), Salman’s counsel
Amit Desai urged for three weeks’ adjournment to check
whether the documents were in order.
Justice A R Joshi, however, granted adjournment till
13 July to carry out the drill of checking documents.
The actor’s lawyer said he would need to check whether
translation of any document in vernacular language is required
to be done in English. He also wanted to check whether
any documents were missing, in which case he would file
an application seeking a direction to place them on record.
Meanwhile, the proceedings on a complaint against AAP
leader Kumar Vishwas by a party volunteer alleging that
her life was ruined as he was not rebutting ‘rumours’ about
their illicit liaison, have been closed by the Delhi women’s
panel, its chief told Delhi High Court today. Justice V P
Vaish was told by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW)
Chairperson Barkha Singh’s counsel that ‘there are
no proceedings pending in the case’ before the body.
The DCW counsel further said that as the probe
against Vishwas was closed on 23 June, the present
petition becomes ‘infructuous’.

TN fishermen go
on indefinite fast
Rameswaram, July 1 (PTI):
About 250 fishermen began an indefinite fast in front of the bus stand
here today, demanding the release
of 14 fishermen arrested by the Sri
Lankan navy since June 2, and also
their boats.
N J Bose, president of the Tamilnadu and Puducherry Fishermen’s
Association, told reporters that 19
boats in the custody of the Sri Lankan
government had been totally damaged as they had been anchored and
not maintained.
He charged the BJP government with not fulfilling its election promises like retrieving
Katchathivu islet, allowing fishermen to fish in traditional areas,
creating a separate Ministry for
the fisheries department and
taking steps to prevent attacks on
Indian fishermen.
‘This is a dark period as far as
the fishermen are concerned.
The government should act and
take steps to get the fishermen
released,’ he said.

CBI set to quiz
Dayanidhi Maran
New Delhi, July 1:
Former Union Telecom Minister
Dayanidhi Maran is likely to be questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the national capital
today. The DMK leader is slated to
be questioned in connection with a
case of allegedly using over 300 high
data capacity BSNL telecom lines at
his residence in Chennai during his
tenure as the Telecom Minister in the
UPA government.
According to CBI sources, Maran
was called for questioning on Monday but he skipped the scheduled
meeting. He was granted six weeks
anticipatory bail by the Madras High
Court on Tuesday.

Helmet rule is not
draconian: Kamal
NT Bureau
Chennai, July 1:
With the helmet rule becoming
compulsory from today, actor Kamal
Hasan has said it should not be
thought as a draconian law. ‘There
are so many other laws which are
draconian and people should not
oppose this law,’ he told reporters
here today.
For being criticised earlier for not
following the same in his new movie
Papanasam, which is hitting the
screens this Friday, Kamal said, ‘I
have people standing next to me,
who are ready to catch me if I fall,
the same is not the case on roads. If
Superman jumps from a building, we
still take the stairs. People should not
blindly follow what’s there in movies.’
When asked If strict punishments
should be given for cases regarding sexual harassment, the actorfilmmaker said, ‘I am against capital
punishment and even life term, there
should be self regulation within the
public.’
On why he took up the Papanasam
project even though it was already
made in three other languages,
Kamal said, ‘I didn’t go after the

university received 1,51,135 applications under academic stream and
3,279 were rejected.

‘Directing mediation
in rape cases
spectacular error’
New Delhi, July 1:
The Supreme Court today observed
that a woman’s body is her temple and
there should be no mediation and no
compromise in rape cases. An apex
court bench headed by Justice Dipak
Misra described as a spectacular error
and lack of sensitivity on the part of a
lower court which had allowed a rapist to
go scot free by accepting an agreement
on wedlock. While hearing the case the
apex court maintained that courts cannot take a soft approach on the issue.
The bench maintained that any
approach of settlement in a rape
case is against dignity of a woman.
The order came while accepting the
Madhya Pradesh government’s plea
challenging a lower court’s acquitting
a man accused of rape.
The top court’s order comes a
week after Madras High Court Justice P Devadass referred a case of
a rapist, who was awarded seven
years imprisonment by a trial court,
to its mediation centre to settle the
matter taking note of the future of
the victim, now a mother of a child.
Justice P Devadass, holding that alternative dispute resolution such as mediation is now being used in criminal cases
said, ‘In fact, even in Islam, Hinduism and
Christianity there are instances of solving
the disputes in a non-belligerent manner.
The result of it is very good because
there is no victor, no vanquished.’

A taver block road was laid in the
market area at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.
Talking about it, Commissioner of
Pallavaram Municipality Sivasubramanium said such roads are frictionless and user-friendly. ‘Taver
roads can be laid in areas which
have relatively less trafc. Also
potholes can be easily removed on
such roads,’ he added.
It won’t be an exaggeration to say
that Radha Nagar main road is the
‘Ranganathan Street’ of the neighbourhood with lots of shops dotting
the stretch.
Besides being a connecting road to
interior areas like
Nehru Nagar, RP

has lot of small vendors lined up on the

Haphazard parking has become

With several public utilities, including hospitals and post offices
located in and around Ashok Pillar, the one-way system caused
severe hardship to the people. It

Residents, especially senior
citizens have been voicing concern over the problems faced
by them with the present set
of traffic arrangement. ‘With
the one-way traffic system, we
are finding difficult to cross the

time, when we complain to the

Civic activists also said that
there was no coordination
when the one-way traffic was
introduced. The police did not
even seek suggestion from the
residents. Also, they did not
study in detail about the traffic
flow around Ashok Pillar junction, they said.
When contacted traffic police
officials said, they will study the

traffic, we would restore two-way
traffic. If it is not so, we have to
maintain the present system,’
they said.

Seeing red over pink
C
ricket administrators have never been short of ideas and
innovation and have come up with one thing or the other in
the past. The latest seems the most revolutionary as the Australian
and New Zealand boards announced plans to hold a day-night Test
during the forthcoming ‘summer of cricket’ Down Under.
The pink ball(s) to be used for what could be a momentous match
has been trialled, albeit with mixed reactions. Now that the plans
have been made to hold the first-ever day-night Test in Adelaide
from 27 November, there will be a lot of debate leading into the
encounter.
Though the two boards seemed pretty upbeat about the proposal
and also made some changes to suit the timings while hoping that
day-night Tests could help draw crowds to Test matches.
However, Australian pace ace Mitchell Starc isn’t too happy with
the same, it seems. Starc, who played for New South Wales in a
day-night Sheffield Shield fixture against South Australia at Adelaide
Oval last summer, the same ground where the Test will be played,
said he was ‘yet to be convinced.’
The left-arm paceman admitted that he could not see the ball when
fielding and had other serious reservations about the concept.
Even though it was the latest in countless versions of the pink balls
trialled by Cricket Australia’s official supplier Kookaburra, Starc
said it was nothing like using the traditional red ball.
Other members of the Australian Ashes squad weighed in with
various views on the day-night innovation. Steven Smith and Brad
Haddin spoke enthusiastically about it, on the basis that now the
decision was made there was no point in worrying.
Star all-rounder Shane Watson, who has been deeply involved
in discussions through his role on the executive of the Australian
Cricketers Association, said there was little point in drawing
conclusions until the match had been played, after which it would
be possible to decide whether it would be a fixture like day-night
ODI matches or a one-off like the World XI Super Test of 2005.
It seems a valid point as too much judgement can’t be made before
the game is played. The players are the ones who hold the key to the
longevity of such a plan (day-night Tests) and it is only appropriate
that their opinions are taken into consideration before the authorities
dive headlong into innovations.
The advent of T20 has eroded the popularity of the ODIs and
Tests to a great extent and changes are required to keep in tune
with times and if day-night Tests are a hit, there will be light at the
end of the tunnel.

Greece’s bailout expires
First developed country on IMF defaults list
ATHENS:
Greece lost its financial lifelines on
Tuesday, as the country missed a
crucial payment to the International
Monetary Fund amid growing questions about whether it would be able
to remain in the euro zone.
Greek leaders had made a last-ditch
attempt to come up with the necessary cash, asking European countries
for a new bailout hours before its
last ones were set to expire, but EU
finance ministers rejected the request
as unrealistic. The missed payment,
confirmed by the IMF, was a landmark
moment in Europe’s five-year battle to
preserve its common currency.
The EU finance chiefs were set to
reconvene Wednesday as Greece’s
cash dwindles and its banks remain
closed. The ministers’ decision to
hold firm was a sign that they believed
they had successfully put in place the

Tsipras wrote in a letter ahead of the
missed payment, requesting the new

who leads the group of 19 finance
ministers of euro-zone countries.
Greeks are strongly in favor of
remaining with the euro. But they
have rebelled against the crushing
austerity measures that Europe has

out the indebted government. Tsipras
stunned EU leaders last weekend

says will strengthen his bargaining
power with his EU counterparts.

Animal
mystery in
California
Contest claims centuries-old tradition
SACRAMENTO:
Authorities in California are trying to determine why someone has
been dropping bags filled with the
bodies of decapitated animals near
railroad tracks in the capital city of
Sacramento.
On Monday, the city released a
surveillance video of what appeared
to be a woman dropping off the headless carcass of a goat, along with a
similarly mutilated rat and catfish, and
a bag of decapitated red hens, said
Gina Knepp, spokeswoman for the
Sacramento Department of Animal
Control.
‘It’s bizarre,’ Knepp said. ‘We don’t
know if it’s religion; we don’t know if
we have a sick individual in our community that simply likes to cut the
heads off animals and dump them
where people can see them.’
Since the beginning of the year,
more than a dozen sets of remains
have been found in Sacramento,
some of them in plastic bags placed
near railroad tracks.
SWATON:
The English village of Swaton was
the host last Sunday to the annual
World Egg Throwing Championships.
Drawing hundreds of competitors and
cheering spectators, it’s a messy
game claiming a 700-year history and
egg-streme puns.
Teams of two align on the grass to
try to throw and catch eggs without
breaking the shell. Starting at 10
meters (11 yards) apart, the ‘tosser’
throws an egg to a teammate, the
‘catcher’. After each successful catch
they spread further apart.
The winning team is the one that
completes a catch with no breakage over the furthest distance. This
year it’s Richard Gutsell and Michael
Speakman.
‘It was tough ... We had a downward
wind so it helped an awful lot, but it’s
mainly down to him because if you
can’t throw it that far you can’t catch
it,’ Speakman said of thrower Gutsell.
The World Egg Throwing Federation, set up in 2004, believes the
game originated around 1322 when
an abbot in the Lincolnshire village,
the only person who had chickens,
encouraged church attendance by
giving locals alms of one egg.
When the river flooded and prevented parishioners from attending
church, monks are said to have
thrown the eggs over to them, accord-
ing to the Federation.
There are several disciplines at the
contest -- Egg Throwing, Russian
Egg Roulette, Egg Static Relay, Egg
Trebuchet and Egg Target Throwing.
For the Russian Egg Roulette, two
players sit facing each other, taking
it in turn to pick from six eggs, five
boiled and one raw, and smash them
on their foreheads. Whoever avoids
the raw egg is declared winner.

Good job
indeed
Sir,
Kudos to the Tamilnadu government and the entire Metro rail
project team for their stupendous
work in making the metro rail a success. Though after an ambitious
start the project faced many hurdles
but thankfully it never derailed.
Initially Chennaiites cribbed about
the traffic diversion due to construction work and many were sentimental and worried about the heritage
buildings, part of which were demolished. But finally patience paid
off, as we saw the first train move.
Also I am sure that many poor
migrant construction workers who
died due to accidents at various
construction sites would be delighted to see their monumental
efforts chugging along the tracks
from the heavens.

New Delhi, July 1 (PTI):
The Indian hotel industry will
witness a modest growth of five
to six per cent in the current
fiscal due to delays of underconstruction projects, according
to ratings agency ICRA.
The revenue growth for the
industry is expected to remain
weak in the first half of 2015 with
a growth rate of just three to four
per cent and operating margins
are likely to be flat, it said.
Occupancies in the hotel for
FY2015-16 is expected to improve by 2 to 4 per cent and
revenue per room will go up by
three to five per cent, said ICRA
in its research on the Indian

‘In view of continued weakness
in the Indian Hotel industry,
ICRA has marginally revised
growth estimates for the industry
down to a top-line growth of five
to six per cent during 2015-16,
with flat operating margins’, the
report said.
It further added: ‘Room inventory in the country is expected
to grow by 12 per cent during
2015-16, as compared to four
per cent during 2014-15’, the
report said.

Messi sizzles as
Argentina storms ahead
Paraguay defence found wanting
as Di Maria scores two goals
Concepcion (Chile), July 1 (AFP):
Lionel Messi produced a scintillating individual
performance as Argentina destroyed Paraguay
6-1 to reach the nal of the Copa America.
The Barcelona superstar tormented Paraguay
mercilessly yesterday as the favorites produced
their best display of the tournament and advanced
to a showdown with Chile in Saturday’s nal.
Although Messi failed to end his run of more
than 900 minutes without an international goal
from open play, he turned creator as Argentina
tore Paraguay apart.
Goals from Angel Di Maria (2), Marcos Rojo,
Javier Pastore, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain completed an emphatic rout for the South
American giants.
Manchester United defender Rojo and Paris
Saint-Germain’s Pastore had given Argentina
a 2-0 lead midway through the rst half before
Paraguay pulled one back through Lucas Barrios.
But any Paraguayan hopes of repeating their
heroics in the group phase -- when they came
back from two goals down to draw 2-2 -- were
snuffed out by two goals in six minutes from Di
Maria early in the second half.
The carnage was completed with a headed
goal from Manchester City striker Aguero in the
80th minute before
substitute Higuain
made it 6-1 just after
coming on.
Argentina’s opener came
from a setpiece after 15
minutes.
Messi flighted a teasing
free-kick into the area and
when the ball dropped to
Rojo, the defender reacted quickest and drilled
in a low shot.
The Argentinians
should have doubled
their lead six minutes
later when Messi
sprinted clear of
the Paraguayan
cover and released Pastore down the
left.
But with the
goal begging,
Pastore took
took too long
Bernard Mendy
Sergio Aguero
to get
a shot away
and Victor Caceres
was able to slide in to
make a desperate last-ditch
block.
Yet Pastore did not have to wait long to
make amends, seizing his chance when
presented with another gilt-edged opportunity by Messi six minutes later.
Slick approach play saw the ball end with
Messi, who deftly carved open the Paraguayan
defence to play in Pastore.
The midelder controlled on the run with
a sublime rst touch before bludgeoning
a low shot past Justo Villar. A disastrous
start for Paraguay was compounded when
veteran striker Roque Santa Cruz limped out
of the contest, to be replaced by Barrios. As
half-time approached, however, Argentina’s
defensive frailty was exposed once again with
sloppy play at the back presenting Barrios
with the chance to lash home a shot from
20 yards to give Paraguay hope.Paraguay’s
fightback was extinguished within eight
minutes of the restart, however, as two goals
from Di Maria put the favourites 4-1 up.
Rahane seeks calmness,
simplicity as captain
New Delhi, July 1 (PTI):
Named captain for the tour of
Zimbabwe, Ajinkya Rahane says he
would like to take Mahendra Singh
Dhoni’s calmness and Virat Kohli’s
controlled aggression into the eld
when he wears the skipper’s hat in
the upcoming limited-overs series.
Over the years, Rahane has played
under various captains - Rahul
Dravid, Dhoni and Kohli.
Asked what he would like to imbibe
form them, Rahane said, ‘Firstly,
playing under MS Dhoni I would observe how he would be calm on the
eld. He has a very peculiar and calm
way of handling situations. I would
like to take that quality from him.
What I would like to take from Virat
Kohli would be controlled aggression.
You can see that quality in his batting
and his captaincy.’
‘And nally, Rahul bhai is someone
who likes to keep things really simple
on the eld which I got to know while
playing under him with the Rajasthan
Royals.’
The 27-year-old batsman, who had
led the Mumbai U-19 side in the past,
though has his own ideas as far as
captaincy is concerned.
‘I have my own set of ideas and I
know what I have to do on the eld.
Obviously I have others to help me
out as well and I wouldn’t mind running up to them for advices. But I
would like to take calmness, controlled aggression and simplicity from
the three captains that I just spoke
about,’ Rahane was quoted as saying by ‘bcci.tv’.Talking about the tour,
he said, ‘As a captain I believe it is
always important to back your players
and give them condence. I want to
lead by example and be positive at all
times. It is a challenge to lead a side
that doesn’t have the services of the
seniors, but every international tour
is challenging.

London, July 1:
Australia paceman Mitchell Starc
has expressed concerns about the
pink ball to be used in the rst daynight Test, saying it behaved ‘very
differently’ to the usual red ball and
crowds might not even be able to
see it.
Starc, who was named the player
of the World Cup in March, also
questioned the efcacy of the format
as a measure of a cricketer’s career,
suggesting night tests might need
to be recorded separately given the
vastly different conditions on offer.
The 25-year-old left-armer was
involved in a round of Sheffield
Shield day-night trial matches in
Australia but was not convinced by
the concept.
‘It doesn’t react anything like the red
ball, in terms of swing and the hardness of it anyway,’ he told media in
England, where Australia are preparing for the Ashes.
‘It goes soft pretty quickly, I didn’t
see a huge amount of reverse swing
in that game and I don’t think it swung
from memory too much until the articial light took over.‘It denitely reacts
very, very differently to the red ball.
‘The other thing as well is, personally, I couldn’t see the thing at night
on the boundary. I couldn’t see the
ball. So I’m not sure how the crowd
are going to see it.‘I understand the
pink ball has changed a lot from when
it rst came in for trials. It’s improved
a lot, so Kookaburra has done well
there.‘But time will tell if it works with
the crowds and the viewership and
the way that cricketers respond to it.’
The rst day-night test will be played
between Australia and New Zealand
on 27 November, the third and nal
match of their series, with administrators hopeful the format can translate
to improved crowds and broadcast
revenue.

Chennaiyin FC
retains Mendy
NT Bureau
Chennai, July 1:
Chennaiyin FC have retained
French defender Bernard Mendy for
the second season of the Hero Indian
Super League.
Mendy was undoubtedly one of the
best foreign players of the 2014 ISL
and his bicycle kick strike in the home
win over Kerala Blasters was one of
the goals of the tournament.
A press note said the 34 year-old
also captained Chennaiyin FC in ve
matches and became a real fan favourite among the supporters, especially at the Marina Arena in Chennai.
Mendy, who has been capped four
times for France at senior international level, was playing for AEL
Limassol in the top tier of Cyprus
after ISL 2014.
Chennaiyin FC manager Marco
Materazzi said, 'We are delighted to
have retained Mendy for the second
edition of the ISL.'
'I am thankful to Chennaiyin FC
for retaining me and giving me the
chance to play for the wonderful CFC
fans once again. Playing in the ISL for
Chennaiyin FC was an unforgettable
experience for me last year and I am
excited at the prospect of getting to do
it this time also,' Mendy said.
Stressed Bouchard
has no regrets
London, July 1:
Eugenie Bouchard was brutally
honest after suffering a rst-round
defeat by China’s Duan Yingying at
Wimbledon on Tuesday to end her
hopes of repeating last year’s run to
the nal.
The Canadian 12th seed, crushed
by Petra Kvitova in last year’s showpiece, was beaten 7-6(3) 6-4 on
Court Three.
Since reaching the Australian Open
quarter-finals in January she has
suffered eight rst-round defeats and
was further hampered by a stomach
injury against Duan.
‘It has kind of been a stressful time,
these big tournaments that everyone
was talking about to me,’ Bouchard
told reporters.
‘I denitely felt tight in the rst set.
But I also felt very unprepared for this
match,’ she added.
‘That’s unfortunate. But I wanted to
play, no matter what.
‘It’s just been a lot of learning. I’m
always trying to keep the belief and
stay true to myself and do what I need
to do to become as good as I know
I can be.
‘I’ve just learned about this world I’m
in, being an athlete, the struggles.’

Bouchard, 21, said she could not
miss the chance to play at Wimbledon.
‘I have a grade two tear in my ab.
Probably wouldn’t have been smart
to play here, but I couldn’t pass on
Wimbledon. So I did kind of minimal
preparation to save myself for the
match.
‘I was trying not to think about it. But
I just haven’t practiced that much. So
I felt my timing was very off.’
‘I’m disappointed because I lost.
And it was probably not the smartest
decision.’

Bharti also contended that a stricture must be passed against the

this, the counsel for DCW Chairperson said that her

Bharti opposed the panel chief’s

HC defers Salman’s
appeal to 13 July
q Lawyer seeks time to
check documents in hit-and-run case
Mumbai, July 1 (PTI):
The Bombay High Court today
deferred till 13 July an appeal filed
by Bollywood superstar Salman
Khan against the five-year sentence
awarded to him in the hit-and-run
case, after the actor’s lawyer sought
time to check documents.
Although the ‘paper book’ (compilation of evidence and documents) is
ready and copies have been served
to both the sides by the court), Salman’s counsel Amit Desai urged for
three weeks’ adjournment to check
whether the documents were in order.
Justice A R Joshi, however, granted
adjournment till 13 July to carry out
the drill of checking documents. The
actor’s lawyer said he would need
to check whether translation of any
document in vernacular language is
required to be done in English. He
also wanted to check whether any
documents were missing, in which
case he would file an application
seeking a
direction to
place them
on record. On
behalf of the
Maharashtra
government,
Chief Public
Prosecutor
S S Shinde
consented to
the adjournment date. Salman did
not come to the court. His sister Alvira
was, however, present.
The High Court had on May 8
stayed the execution of the 5-year
sentence awarded to 49-year-old
Salman in the 13-year-old case and
granted him bail while admitting his
appeal.
Salman was convicted by a

Amarnath
Yatra begins
Jammu, July 1 (PTI):
Amid tight security arrangements,
the annual Amarnath yatra today
commenced from Jammu as the
first batch of 1,280 pilgrims left for
the cave shrine in South Kashmir
Himalayas.
‘Amarnath yatra began from Jammu
today. A batch of 1,280 pilgrims have
left from Bhagwati Nagar base camp
in Jammu this morning for their onward journey to the 3,888 meters high
cave shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir
Valley,’ said Dr Piyush, Yatra officer
and Additional Deputy Commissioner
Jammu.
The batch comprising 919 men, 191
women, 16 children and
154 sadhus left in a cavalcade of 34
vehicles guarded by heavy contingent
of CRPF personnel from the base
camp at 5:10 AM, a police officer said.
The cavalcade has already crossed
Kud in Udhampur district, he said.
The yatra was flagged off by Jammu
and Kashmir Ministers Lal Singh,
Sukhnandan Choudhary and Priya
Sethi. They said that the yatra has
begun and all arrangements have
been made for comfortable yatra of
pilgrims, who have come from various
parts of the country to pay obeisance

to murder’. A man was killed and
four others were wounded when
the actor’s Toyota Land Cruiser
ran over them while they were
asleep on a pavement outside a
bakery in suburban Bandra on 28
September, 2002.
Salman has challenged the findings of the trial court that he was
drunk and was driving under the influence of liquor. The actor pleaded
that the trial court had wrongly
convicted him under the culpable
homicide charge, because he had
no knowledge that he would meet
with an accident.
In the appeal, Salman argued that
the trial court had failed to appreciate the fact that four prosecution witnesses, including the investigating
officer, had said that there were four
persons present in the Toyota Land
Cruiser when the accident occurred
and that it was the family driver
Ashok Singh who was at the wheel.

‘Make public minutes of
Sushma-Bevan meeting’
New Delhi, July 1 (PTI):
Congress today sought to make more
trouble for the government on Lalitgate
issue, putting forth six demands including making public minutes of a meeting
it claimed External Affairs Minister
Sushma Swaraj had with UK High Commissioner James Bevan in which she
had favoured grant of travel documents
to Lalit Modi.
The party also wanted the Prime
Minister to answer whether any Union
Minister’s relative received any job offer
from Lalit Modi recently.
Pitching for full disclosure by the government, Congress’ chief spokesman
Randeep Surjewala claimed that Swaraj
has herself admitted that the meeting
with the UK High Commissioner had
taken place.
‘Minutes of the meeting in which help
for Lalit Modi was sought have been

Affairs Ministry and they should be made
public,’ he told reporters.
Surjewala also demanded that any
communication by Sushma Swaraj with
Bevan or UK Foreign Minister on the
matter be released.
He wanted the Prime Minister to explain whether any relative of a Union
Minister was made any job offer by
Lalit Modi recently and what was the
nature and type of the job offer.
Insisting that such an offer was
indeed made, he said that there was
no mention of it on the website of the
Prime Minister though rules of government business demand that any
Minister must keep the Prime Minister informed about any such offer.
Demanding sacking of Swaraj, he
reminded the Prime Minister that
the Congress had adhered to the
‘highest standards of propriety’ by
asking for resignation of Madhavsinh

He said ‘moral and constitutional

Varun Gandhi
New Delhi, July 1 (PTI):
Scam tainted former IPL chief
Lalit Modi today sought to drag
BJP leader Varun Gandhi in the
Lalitgate controversy alleging
that a deal was offered to settle
matters with Sonia Gandhi, which
Varun dubbed as ‘baseless’ and
‘nonsense’.
In a series of tweets, Lalit Modi
has alleged, ‘Mr @varungandhi80
came to see me at my house a few
years ago and said he can settle
everything in @INCIndia with his
aunt. He wanted me to meet her
sister from italy....’
Vehemently denying the charge,
Varun told PTI, ‘This is absolutely
baseless and it is beneath my dignity to respond to this nonsense.’
The BJP has also come to Varun’s
defence, saying he is in a different
party than Sonia Gandhi. ‘Varun
Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are in
different parties and the world
knows about the ties between the
two families,’ BJP Spokesperson
Shahnawaz Hussain said.

evin Feige,
president of the Marvel studio, has revealed the movies
franchise will feature a lesbian, gay, bisexual or
transgender character 'in the next decade or sooner.'
Feige's comment came within days of the historic federal ruling which legalised same sex marriage across the
entirety of the United States, reported Collider.
While there are no concrete plans in place to include such a
character in any of the movies scheduled, Feige suggested that
it would be a certainty at some stage.
'Well in the drawing board going up to 2019 it remains to be
seen,' he said.
'The comics always make the path that we get to have the fun of
saying, 'Yeah let's choose this way or let's choose this way', and
I think there are a lot of cool things happening in the comics
now that - it's usually a ve to
ten-year cycle between when something happens in
the comics and when we can do it in the movie,
sometimes a little less, but Civil War is certainly
about the ten-year mark. Winter Soldier,
I think, was around that time.'

Kiran pins hope

A
amir Khan's director wife Kiran Rao, who has been appointed
as the chairperson of the MAMI lm festival, hopes to create a
market for independent lm distribution at the event.
'We hope to create a market for independent lm distribution at Jio
MAMI, as this is one of the biggest hurdles independent lms face in
India,' the director told said.
Kiran, 41, said the festival is an important platform for lmmakers to
showcase their work and get feedback.
'Film festivals have numerous advantages for directors and producers, as they get to watch the work of their contemporaries from around
the country and world, as well as an opportunity to network and interact
with other lm professionals.
'They also get to interact with their audiences through masterclasses
and Q&As, which gives them reactions and vital feedback about their
lms,' she said.
Last year, the festival faced hurdles to gather funds. 'Nothing went
wrong with MAMI festival. The ve-year funding that Reliance ADAG
group had given MAMI had come to an end, and the festival organisers found it difcult to raise fresh funds.
'But thanks to well wishers and public support, the festival was held
as planned,' the 'Dhobi Ghat' director said. She will be taking appropriate measures for the growth of the MAMI festival.
'The focus of the festival has always been to showcase the best of
Indian and international independent cinema, and that will continue...
We have new sections, programmes and events that we will be announcing soon,' she said.
There are new board of trustees of MAMI like Anurag Kashyap,
Farhan Akhtar, Karan Johar, Vikramaditya Motwane, Riteish Deshmukh and Deepika Padukone.
'The members of the board of trustees are all known for the excellence they have shown in their elds, be it as actors, directors, producers, distributors or exhibitors. They have all been very encouraging of
the festival, and helped us in different ways,' Kiran said.
