This year the FreePress celebrates its 25th anniversary. We are proud to have served the Poultney region all those years and look forward to many more years to come. Be looking for our huge anniversary edition coming later in the year. Greetings Poultney Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Poultney Community Guide. Every year, the staff at Manchester Newspapers, in cooperation with the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce, puts a great deal of effort and time into this guide and we take great pride in bringing you this handy guide. It is designed to be a useful year-round resource, whether you're a newcomer to town or a lifelong resident. Inside, we have provided a wide variety of information - from church schedules, contact information for government officials, a complete rundown on all our civic organizations to a list of the businesses in the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce and even more. As we have done in the past, this edition of the Poultney Community Guide features various "Poultney Profiles," offering snapshots about various organizations, businesses and events unique to Poultney. As always, this year's Poultney guide is a combined effort on the part of our staff, as well as members of the chamber. We also are grateful to Poultney Town Manager Jonas Rosethal and his staff for their help in making this guidebook as useful as it can be. And special thanks to Poultney photographer Alan Nyiri for once again providing a beautiful cover photo of Poultney's Main Street. Fundations and Reading Street are two programs used to address literacy, and though grades K-6 use the Everyday Math program as a basis for core math instruction, due to the expectations and rigor that comes with the CCSSM, teachers have integrated a collection of resources that incorporate hands-on activities and strategic programs, all of which are research-based. In addition, PES offers many technology-based programs in mathematics that challenge, as well as support students in their skill development, as they use iPads, netbooks and computers both within the classroom and in our computer lab. In addition, the school offers the Fast ForWord technology-based program, to promote student achievement through the strengthening of processing, attention, focusing and language skills. Its Challenge Program is also unique in that it is designed to fit the skills of students, grades K-6, on an individual basis; thus learning can, and does occur both within and outside of the school setting and incorporates student choice, as well as their interests and areas of strength. As technology continues to advance at a rapid rate, integration is a priority and the school was fortunate to add two EnoBoards (interactive white boards) to its list of items, providing, each grade level with tools to promote the acquisition of skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century. Students have been engaged in local, statewide and national events through the use of the school’s technological resources and the faculty feels lucky to have these as part of itsinventory. New this year is a climbing wall purchased with grant funds which were off-set by local monies to support some installation and maintenance costs. This structure is a great way to support physical fitness and the well-being of all students as 34 • Manchester Newspapers • Poultney Community Guidebook • January 2014 they learn to make positive choices to sustain a healthy lifestyle. This was the school’s first year as participants in the Pico Ski and Snowboard Program as 22% of the student population traveled on four Monday afternoons to the mountain, while other children stayed at school exploring activities such as guitar, baking, snowshoeing, and Zumba. PES is proud of its wellestablished relationships with the community as parents and Poultney residents are often invited to celebrations, assemblies, VIP Luncheons and BBQs; parents are welcomed as participants and/or volunteers in their child’s classroom. The school continues to be grateful for the support that is rendered by the community for their children and their education. The origin of modern Poultney, however, was the area now known as East Poultney. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, East Poultney was known simply “Poultney,” while the present downtown, which was more undeveloped, was called West Poultney. Poultney was chartered on Sept. 21, 1761 by Benning Wentworth, Royal Governor of New Hampshire, but the town was not settled until 1771 when Thomas Ashley and Ebenezer Allen built cabins for their families there. “The town began in East Poultney because of the water power there,” explains Ina Smith Johnson, president of the Poultney Historical Society. By 1777, the first gristmill was built, and the village of Poultney grew up around the mill. Many buildings followed, including the Eagle Tavern (1780), the Federalstyle Baptist Church (1805) and the 1823 Horace Greeley House. The flurry of development that occurred during this era produced several beautiful buildings, many of which still stand today. Built in 1791, the Union Academy is said to be the second-oldest schoolhouse in Vermont. It was named to commem- The Old Victorian Schoolhouse orate the year that Vermont became the 14th state in the union. Today, it is restored as a schoolhouse, and is one of the Poultney Historical Society’s three museums. The Society conducts programs with local schoolchildren there, and has even held an authentic 1791 class, complete with quill pens. “That is our favorite part, working with the kids,” Johnson notes. Other historical buildings still standing in East Poultney include the Melodeon Factory, which began life as a blacksmith shop in 1810. Around 1850, a second floor was added for the manufacture of reed organs or “melodeons,” and the expanded structure became one of the most successful melodeon factories outside of New York or Boston. Today it is the oldest surviving building from East Poultney’s industrial era, and is home to many of the Historical Society’s exhibits. Built in 1780, the Eagle Tavern is a striking example of Federal-style architecture. It hosted many 38 • Manchester Newspapers • Poultney Community Guidebook • January 2014 travelers during colonial times and was a haunt of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. The East Poultney Green is also home to the 1805 East Poultney Baptist Church, considered one of Vermont’s most outstanding Colonial era churches. The Horace Greeley House, built in 1823 and originally a print shop, was the place where two teenagers became friends and would later go on to make their mark on American journalism. Around 1826, while learning about the world Poultney Profiles of publishing, Horace Greeley met George Jones. Jones eventually became a founder of the New York Times, while Greeley founded the New York Tribune, which had the largest circulation in the country during the mid1800s. With all the activity during the first half of the 1800s, it would seem that East Poultney would become the population center. However, developments that occurred in that time led to a shift. The beginning of the change was the construc- tion of a turnpike (today’s Route 30) in 1811, followed by canals ten years later. With more people moving to West Poultney, this area began to have more clout, enough so that when the federal government decided to place a post office in the area, it was located in West Poultney. The arrival of the railroad in the mid-1800s cemented West Poultney’s claim as the demographic center, and eventually the settlement became known as simply “Poultney.” “With all the transportation in the west part of town, East Poultney has remained much as it was 200 years ago,” says Johnson. “Most of the buildings are largely intact.” Situated around the lovely green, the buildings of East Poultney Village make for an enjoyable walking tour. “East Poultney is a hidden treasure,” Johnson says. The Historical Society has produced an audio tour of the town offered for download on its website. It’s accompanied by a print map brochure available at the East Poultney General R&D Automotive, Inc. 1015 Main Street, Castleton VT Store and at many locations around town. With its quintessential Vermont ambiance, the East Poultney Green is used for many community events each year, including East Poultney Day. Held on the second Saturday in August, the day features folk art and antiques vendors, period songs and games, and family fun and food. Manchester Newspapers • Poultney Community Guidebook • January 2014 • 47 Poultney Profiles Stone Valley Arts impacting the community It started as just an idea less than a year ago, but Stone Valley Arts has already engaged the Poultney community with classes and events. Housed in the top floor of the Journal Press building at 188 Main Street, Stone Valley Arts is the concrete manifestation of an idea that grew out of community meetings in April 2013 related to the Poultney 2020 revitalization effort. A community arts center was identified as an impor- tant need. Chuck Colvin, owner of the building, said he would donate space to help the center get started. “We’re getting a little bit of programming going,” said Dick Weis, an artist and owner of Otherweis Studio who is coordinating the new space. “We’re on the lookout for people in the arts and art entrepreneurs who want to start a class. We can provide a space at low cost.” Stone Valley Arts unveiled the new concept at a Grand Open House in October 2013 with a full day of events. Currently, Stone Valley Arts is running an open session for figure drawing twice a month, and has hosted Native American carving workshops and Argentine Tango lessons. An Open Mic Spoken Word event was held on Jan. 24, and Erika Lawlor Schmidt is planning a modern dance workshop in the spring. In addition, LiHigh School will be using a space for martial arts classes twice a week, said Weis. One exciting idea is the possibility of developing an annual event to recreate the Welsh Eisteddfod celebration of the arts. Such an event was held in Poultney until the early 1950s, said Weis. He noted that it was so well-known in the Welsh community that people from Wales actually traveled to Poultney to attend the 2014 GRAND CHEROKEE i live. i ride. i am. But they are also seeking people who would like to curate exhibits in the space. The organization, currently seeking nonprofit status, would also like to be a hub for Vermont’s Open Studio Weekend in May. Stone Valley Arts plans to make space for up to 10 artists who don’t have studios but would like to exhibit. Two years ago, Green Mountain College launched the Vermont Tuition Match Scholarship for high school graduates in Vermont. In this scholarship, GMC pledged to match the tuition levied by the University of Vermont for applicants who meet our admission standards and who enroll full-time. Now, Green Mountain College is launching several new initiatives to make a Green Mountain College degree more attainable. “We want interested students to know they have the option of attending a Vermont private institution with the advantages of small classes and strong student advising, and that opportunity is not out of reach financially,” said Green Mountain College President Paul Fonteyn. Poultney High School Tuition Match Scholarship. This program offers tuition to PHS graduates at a rate equal to the tuition set by Castleton State College. This means that graduates of Poultney High School who meet our admission standards and enroll at GMC full-time in 2014 would receive a scholarship estimated at $22,000 annually. Summer farmers market keeps it fresh Every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., from the end of June until the first Thursday in October, downtown Poultney comes alive with the bounty of the Lakes Region Farmers Market. “Thursdays are one of the busiest days downtown,” Pam Green, a member of the market, said. “It’s exciting.” Green calls the market “a great place to buy local produce, baked goods, and all kinds of beautiful crafts.” “You can shop and talk to the person who has grown the item; they can suggest recipes,” she said. In addition to fresh pro- duce, the Lakes Region Farmers Market also offers jams, jellies, pickles, relish, corn, berries and plants. Visitors will find the Farmers Market not confined to one specific location, but set up on the grassy strip all along the north side of Main Street. “People can work up and down and shop with us,” said Green. “We love having the interaction with the market and the downtown merchants.” Although a farmers market has existed in Poultney since the 1980s, last year was the first time it had the name Lakes Region Farmers Market. Originally named the Poultney Farmers Market back in the 80s, the organization eventually merged with the Vermont Farmers Market in Rutland when it became apparent that most of the same people were setting up at both markets. Then last year, Green said, “it seemed like Rutland became its own entity, and many Poultney people were doing just Poultney. It was time for Poultney to become its own entity again.” The only hitch was the fact that the Vermont Farmers Market organization actually owned the Poultney name, due to the long-ago merger. So the Poultney market organized under the Lakes Region Farmers Market name, and set up as such for the first time last year. Because the farmers market also conducts the Christmas Fair at Poultney High School each fall, the group has a substantial number of members, Green said. However, there are about 10 to 18 members who set up each week on Main Street during the summer. “It’s a great group,” Green said. “It’s like a family. We encourage people to support the market to keep the vendors coming back.” Manchester Newspapers • Poultney Community Guidebook • January 2014 • 55 The largest onsite Fuel Storage in the Area 24 Hour Emergency Service National and State Licensed Technicians - over 70 different certificates Service Contract that includes Tune-up for maximized efficiency Cash Discounts for #2 Fuel, Winter Blend, Kero, Biofuel & Propane Repair Service for Fuel and Propane Units Quality Water Treatment Products and Installations Home Energy Visits Master & Journeymen Plumbers on staff Hot Water Solar Systems Trained Service Provider for TankSure Program Heating & Cooling Installations Free Equipment Quote Membership Gas Stations Heating Oil Service Technicians Propane you can trust... Today, volunteer groups are working hard and making progress bringing to life these exciting new cultural and recreational assets for this great Vermont town. Poultney 2020 began late in 2012 when students at Green Mountain College began exploring ideas for bringing the college and town communities together in new ways. This led to a partnership between the college and the Poultney Downtown Revitalization Committee (PDRC) to create a process that would support community-led initiatives and add to the quality of life in town. During the winter of 2013, the effort began to take shape when community focus groups made up of residents, PDRC members, and GMC students and staff, held a series of meetings to identify Poultney’s strengths and brainstorm initiatives in five focus areas: the arts, food, sustainability, place, and good and services. The resulting ideas were then brought to the April 24th Community Meeting where participants reviewed them with the teams, added new ideas, and then voted on the four priority projects. Since then, college and town volunteers on the four Action Teams have worked hard to clarify the visions for these projects, solicit community input, develop designs and plan implementation. Today, three of the teams are still active and making great progress: Stone Valley Arts. One of the high- Matthew Mayberry, host of 2020. lights of 2013 was the formation of Stone Valley Arts (SVA), Poultney’s new community arts center. The organization’s mission is to enhance and expand the cultural life of the community and the surrounding region. SVA plans to offer “a range of programs, including classes, workshops, presentations, and events in the visual, performing and literary arts for all ages and levels of experience,” according to leader Burnham Holmes. SVA is currently located on the third floor of the Journal Press building (Main St. and Depot St.), where it has been hosting a variety of activities, including drawing sessions with live models, tango classes, an Open House during the Chili Cook-off, flute carving workshops, martial arts classes, and a local art show and raffle. Community Park. The goal of this team is to create a pocket park in downtown Poultney that will serve as a community gathering place for both children and adults, and provide a backdrop for various activities such as outdoor music, art and theater. The group has identified a potential site for the park and has created an appealing conceptual design, with features that 58 • Manchester Newspapers • Poultney Community Guidebook • January 2014 include public art, a gazebo, an historical slate wall, and picnic tables. The group is now focused on raising funds for the purchase and development of the park. Parks and Recreation System. This team has been focused on creating a connected network of parks and trails that promote a variety of outdoor activities and help make Poultney a destination for visitors. The goal is to tie together Poultney’s amazing outdoor resources into a system that brings folks to town and encourages them to walk, hike or go on a nice bike ride together. Currently the group is focusing on creating a four-mile trail network in town that connects paths along the Poultney River, a section of the Delaware and Hudson Rail Trail, and trails in the woods behind the Stonebridge House. All three Poultney 2020 Action Teams welcome all interested community members to join them in moving these initiatives forward. What's happening at LiHigh School It’s a Wednesday morning in January, and the halls of the Poultney Small Business Center echo with the sounds of the teachers and students of LiHigh School. Though the approved independent school moved into the historic station on Main Street last summer, LiHigh School continues to attract new students, and they’ve already grown 802-265-3608 beyond what the new building can hold, which is why they’ve also rented virtually every office on the second floor of the Small Business Center. The school’s Social Entrepreneurial program, which gives middle and high school students the life skills they need to succeed in the 21st century, occupies two big rooms in the Small Business Center, Toll Free 1-800-696-3608 giving its 11 students plenty of space for group seminars, skill-based workshops, and independent projects. The Therapeutic program, which serves special-education students ages 11-22, uses every room in the station, as well as four small rooms in the Center. Therapeutic students benefit from oneon-one instruction from LiHigh’s highly trained staff, and the smaller rooms fit them nicely. The historic station is also home to the school’s new Culinary Institute, which will power the soon-to-open restaurant, Localmotive. Students in both of the other programs are hard at work developing Localmotive’s business plan, learning how to operate a kitchen, and sourcing the necessary ingredients from as 62 • Manchester Newspapers • Poultney Community Guidebook • January 2014 many local farms as possible. But back here in the Small Business Center, the range of educational activities taking place is inspiring. In one room, three middle school girls strengthen their core as part of an independent project on health and exercise. In another room, seated on a comfortable leather couch, a student teaches herself how to artistically edit photos on her iPad, while next to her, a student memorizes vocabulary words taken from her readings on the American Revolution. Another high-school student sits on the floor in front of them, studying the evolution of the human brain. In two other rooms, a staff member gives karate lessons to a middle-school student and a high school Poultney Profiles student takes a singing lesson with the school’s music teacher. Tucked underneath a table in the hallway, a high school student works on a project proposal focused on geography. Her advisor sits on the floor next to her, helping her make the independent project as challenging as possible. As busy as the building is though, one of the students complains about how empty it feels. She’s talking about how five of the high school students are outside, hiking the Poultney rail trail with their mentor from Pawlet (the father of a recent LiHigh School graduate). The mentor is helping them learn about the natural habitat. Along with keeping nature journals, tracking wildlife, and identifying different plants and trees, the students will also perform basic trail maintenance. And that’s the way things go here at LiHigh School: students work in small groups or independently, sometimes with their teacher or a mentor from the community, to pursue an education based on their personal interests and passions. Students come to LiHigh School from a wide range of towns, including Po u l t n e y, P aw l e t , Middletown Springs, Wells, Rupert, West Rutland, Manchester, even Bennington. And when they graduate (with a regular high school diploma), they go on to college, enter the workforce, or choose to travel. Two of last year’s graduates, for example, are currently in Africa and New Zealand, each dedicating their time to community service. Another graduate took a job in his field of choice (maple sugaring), directly applying the independent work he did at LiHigh School to his life after graduation (in fact, the job he has now began as an internship during his senior year). They come from near and far for LiHigh School’s unique education, which provides an authentic connection to the lives they want in the future. This is not a school where students learn to take a standardized test. Instead, it’s a place where independently minded individuals joyfully discover their passions and prepare for a life filled with curiosity and meaning. It’s a special place, LiHigh School, and just by taking a look at what goes on inside these rooms on any given day of the week, any month of the year, you can tell that special people are both its model and its goal. And one more thing, despite how fast LiHigh School is growing, they’re still accepting new students for next year. You can find out more at www.lihighschool.org.
