She had come to sing at flag-raising on the first day of Founders Week, and had agreed to stay afterward to be photographed for the Knoller. I approached her to introduce myself. “Good morning, Nina,” I said. “I’m Camille, the editor of the alumni magazine. You might remember my father, Paul Domaloan, Class of ’55.” “Of course I remember,” she answered, her face lighting up. “When I saw you, I thought, ‘That must be Paul’s daughter.’” My mother will tell you I resemble the Gabriel side of the family, but I still glow inwardly when I think about Nina’s remark, made with such sincerity and effortless grace. I had known her personally for just a few moments, and already discovered all I needed to know. Watching Nina sing “The Queen’s Prayer” in the courtyard (shown on the front cover), it was easy to see why she is receiving the Noblesse Oblige Award for Service at this year’s Kekumano Scholarship Dinner. Please sing for us, she is asked over and over again by her alma mater, her friends, the community. And she brings her amazing voice and a radiant smile, sharing her talent without asking anything in return. To whom much is given, much is expected… Nina’s presence that morning was the first special occasion of Founders Week, traditionally celebrated on campus to honor the founding of the Maryknoll Sisters. This Founders Week was even more meaningful as it signaled the beginning of our anniversary – Maryknoll School, celebrating 75 years in Hawaii. We have so much to be grateful for, and even more to look forward to. Hence, the anniversary theme: “Much was given. Much has been done. Expect more.” I look forward to an anniversary year of celebration that embraces all of us, and challenges us to see how much our spirits resemble the Maryknoll side of the family. I n the 2000-2001 academic year, Michelle Senda ’01 asked and answered the Essential Question: “How does the American culture influence modern day Japan?” for her senior project. The written portion of the project – done in Japanese with an English translation – was completed before Michelle went on the Japan Cultural Exchange in October 2000. While there, she presented her project and fielded questions from a panel of evaluators, all in Japanese. Michelle’s project is an excellent example of what Maryknoll’s Essential School program offers: an innovative approach that combines classroom learning, traditional and high tech research techniques, and firsthand cultural experiences – an approach that requires each student to articulate his or her acquired knowledge before a jury of peers and faculty members. Her work earned a “Distinguished Senior Project” award last spring, but Michelle’s name was inadvertently omitted from the list of awardees for the Class Night ceremony, and therefore in the Summer 2001 issue of the Knoller. Belated but heartfelt congratulations to Michelle for a job well done. i Knoller Volume V, Number 1, Winter 2002 In this issue… FEATURES CLASS OF ’54 GRADUATE SHARES HER MUSIC AND ALOHA WITH THE WORLD L. DEPARTMENTS i 2 6 12 18 26 30 Editor’s Corner President’s Column Alumni Association Report Reunions Class Notes Sports Report In Memoriam Winter 2002 1 PRESIDENT’S COLUMN “Someone is Watching” By Michael E. Baker R eading about the recent hospitalization of baseball great Ted Williams reminded me that one of the greatest thrills of my boyhood was having the opportunity to tag along with my father and a group of his newspaper friends on a three-day fishing trip in the wilderness of northern Maine. Besides myself, the only other non-journalist in the group of fishermen was Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams. I don’t remember catching any fish, but I can still quote nearly verbatim every word that Ted Williams uttered during that weekend. “THE COFFEE CAN WAIT” If we are someone’s role model, it is not because of what we could be or what we should be; it’s because of what we are. 2 Knoller I remember best the early morning drive back to the city and Ted’s repeated request to stop at a well-known diner for “a good strong cup of coffee.” He led us into the diner, commenting on the aroma of coffee as we entered. But he also noted that a family was sitting at the counter, and three young boys had recognized the future Hall of Famer. Williams went to the same counter and ordered a tall glass of milk. Later, he commented that he wanted the boys to see Ted Williams drinking milk. The coffee could wait. While professional athletes today often mouth the rhetoric about serving as role models, there are only a handful of Cal Ripkins, Wayne Gretzskys, and Michael Jordans who take the words to heart. All too often, athletes, rock stars, and celebrities of all kinds are models of excess, irresponsibility, and outrageous behavior, totally antithetical to the qualities that we hope for in a role model. Moreover, the media – with its obsession for exposing every real or imagined blemish of those who become public figures – have made it far more difficult for celebrities to create an image or a public persona worth emulating. TODAY’S HEROES This does not mean that there are no heroes anymore. My guess is that if we ask our students whom they would like to be when they grow up, a good number would cite people like the fire and policemen of New York City, President Bush, or the courageous women who suffered and survived the repression of the Taliban regime. Still, I think heroes have taken a different turn today. I was astonished by the responses when I asked my college students this question not too many years ago. More often than not, they named people within their immediate experience as their heroes, their role models: “my parents”…“my grade school music teacher”…“my soccer coach”…“my auntie who has a handicapped child.” Leading the list by a wide margin was “my grandmother/grandfather.” In fact, grandparents are perhaps the most quoted of all family members: “my grandmother used to say. . .” or “my grandfather taught me. . .” My students often cited friends, neighbors, and coworkers as their role models; rarely did they name celebrities. Ted Williams was acutely aware of his status as a role model, but I suspect that friends, relatives, and coworkers are not. The responses of my students made me painfully aware of the probability that each of us may be someone’s role model. We didn’t ask for it; we aren’t aware of it; we may not even want the responsibility it implies, but it’s there. The sobering thought might, at first, make us uneasy and cause us to pause and question how we conduct our business, our interaction with others, our very lives. Looking at ourselves objectively we may become uncomfortable with the thought that another individual might want to pattern some of his/her behavior after ours. We may be tempted to make conscious adjustments in how we handle ourselves, and that may be a good thing. But to attempt to remodel ourselves would be to miss the point. If we are someone’s role model, it is not because of what we could be or what we should be; it’s because of what we are. Play on! Class of ’37 Grad Receives Volunteer of the Year Award L ucile Smith Mistysyn ’37 was honored as Maryknoll School’s Volunteer of the Year at the National Philanthropy Day (NPD) luncheon, held on November 16, 2001 at the Sheraton Waikiki. NPD is an annual conference for those who work in the non-profit sector. At the luncheon, more than 600 representatives of nonprofit organizations gathered to recognize their distinguished volunteers. Lucile’s family, classmates and friends – along with School President Michael Baker and members of the Office of Development – were there to help celebrate her achievement. Lucile’s lifelong connection to Maryknoll began in 1932 when she enrolled in the eighth grade. Lucile lived in Kaimuki, so her family paid the higher tuition for students who lived outside Sacred Heart Parish — $5 a month. Founded just five years earlier, Maryknoll did not yet have a class to graduate from twelfth grade. So in 1934, at the end of ninth grade, Lucile’s class “graduated” from Maryknoll. The first senior class graduated the following year – and in 1937, Lucile graduated again from Maryknoll, this time as a “Volunteer of the Year” Lucile Smith Mistysyn ’37 (left) and Maryknoll School’s Director of senior. Camarillo ’86 (Hokuli‘i Images) N ina Keali‘iwahamana Rapozo’54 is one of the dazzling stars in the bright constellation of Hawaiian music. Born on Christmas Day in 1936, Nina’s long musical life has celebrated Hawaii’s musical heritage all over the world. Singing the timeless songs of her island home, Nina’s lyrical classic mezzosoprano has brightened many an orchestra, hotel showroom, and recording project. In Hawaii, she has been a featured performer at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel’s Monarch Room, the Tapa Room at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, and the Canoe House at the Ilikai, as well as in numerous stage productions. She has traveled to the mainland with the Honolulu Symphony and the Royal Hawaiian Band and sung with the orchestras of cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, and Baltimore. In 1988, she sang in Carnegie Hall. Nina’s melodious interpretation of Hawaii has also produced delighted applause in Japan, Canada, Australia and Mexico. Jack DeMello, the Hawaii musical director and record producer who recorded the islands’ musical legacy in full symphonic elegance, picked Nina’s classical voice to highlight his arrangements. You can hear her on his timeless Music of Hawaii recordings and also on two other records entitled “Jack DeMello Presents Nina.” Other companies that have preserved her voice on vinyl and most recently on CDs include Waikiki Records, Hula Records, Capitol Records, Surfside Records, Heaven Records, Marc Records and Victor Recordings. Nina’s music also circled the globe for 17 years on the radio waves of the immortal “Hawaii Calls” program, live from Waikiki. Her instrument – crystalline and sweet – does not require an orchestra for enhancement. It also blends comfortably with a single piano on a small stage, and beautifully with the simple strumming of her ukulele in her living room. Nina’s ancestry is its own harmonious blend, carrying ethnic strains from all points on the globe. She is English, Hawaiian, Scotch, Tahitian, Arabian, Micronesian, Mexican, Portuguese and Irish. U P C O M I N G REUNION NOTICES MARCH 17 Dear Fellow Alumni, Congratulations! By reaching 13.4% participation this past year, we have doubled our participation in the Annual Investment in Maryknoll (AIM) Campaign in two years. I again request your generous support for this year’s AIM Campaign and challenge the alumni with a goal of 16.8%, a reasonable 25% increase, which I know we can achieve. Since graduation, I’m sure each of us have reflected on our experiences at Maryknoll School and have appreciated the education and Christian values that we acquired and recognize the importance of maintaining this institution. While the annual contributions are critical to the school’s operating budget, our alumni “participation” is most important in influencing contributions from corporations, foundations, and trusts. When Maryknoll School President Michael Baker appeals to trusts and foundations for the really big bucks, the first question always asked is: “What is your alumni’s participation?” The bottom line is that priority assistance goes to schools with the largest alumni participation. With this in mind, I encourage you to participate, regardless of the amount, in this year’s campaign. At no time in the school’s history has it been more imperative that we alumni support our school. By working together we can preserve this special place that provides an excellent learning experience, but more importantly prepares students to make a difference in life. Thank you for your assistance in this important annual event. Aloha, Paul Y. The first evening there was a “City Lights Tour” followed in the morning by a slot tournament at the casino and a golf tournament for the guys. The banquet at the California Hotel was a ’50 and ’51 combination. When the Class of ’50 met in 2000, Dorinda Chang Tom ’51 and husband James ’50 had such a great time that they wanted to do a repeat the Front (L to R): Juliet Kiyabu Mickelsen, Irene Chang Letoto, May Au Reeves, Miriam McCormack Hattori, Mae following year with the Class of ’51. Dorinda, who lives in Las Vegas, and Shirley Cordeiro Harvey ’50 from Vista, California spent a whole year organizing the gala event. This repeat celebration was very special for the Class of 1950 because we met members of our class who were not able to attend the previous gathering. After a whole evening of renewing old times, playing games and best of all winning those prizes, everybody retired early to meet the next day for a barbecue at Tom’s beautiful home. Some of us even had time to attend the “O” show at the Bellagio that evening. “Awesome!” ■ Irene Chang Letoto ’50 is the director of the Damien Museum in Waikiki. After a year of planning class reunion activities, it was time for the reunion committee to put all the events together for a festive and memorable week. Classmates came from as near as Maui, and as far as New York. Festivities began on Tuesday night with classmates joining in to honor fellow class members Dr. Collin Dang, Dr. Rita Rapoza, and Dr. Patricia Young Lee as they were honored with Alumni Achievement Awards at the all-alumni cocktail party at the Japanese Cultural Center. The casino night setting was a great way to start off events for the rest of the week. The evening seemed much too short for partying, as classmates were the last to leave the center. There was more news to catch up on in other events to follow! The reunion banquet began Saturday night at Natsunoya L to R: (front)Yvonne Lum, Charlene Yap Wall, Beverly Pang Wong, Dianne Lee, Carol Ann Betty Murakami Mastropaolo, Barbara Nobrega Akau, Joan Ebisu, Wanda Hoopai Teahouse in Alewa Heights and was attended by 31 classmates Bryan Sousa, Wong; (2nd row) Antoinette Vaspra Leahey, Betsy Elias Carson, Wendy Barros Figueira, who, along with spouses and Jean Yuen Yates, Judith Chong Kee Hokoana, Rita Rapoza; (3rd row) Carlson Chun, Dennis Hu, Cynthia Beck Luebbers, Franklin Hu, Nelson Chang, Edward Chang; (4th guests, brought in a group of 68 row) Albert Chinen, Yvonne Lau Ambrose, Timothy Wong, Elliott Chamizo, James Wong, for a night of renewing years of Wade Jones, William Lum, Glenn Okinaka, David Lum, Collin Dang. memories spent at Maryknoll. The evening ended with all who attended the banquet looking forward to the next reunion event on Sunday. The beautiful Waialae-Kahala home of Billy Lum and his wife Mary was the perfect place for the party to continue on Sunday with a Banquet Night: (L to R) Herbert Sousa, Jr., Joanne Jones, Elliott barbeque from noon until late Chamizo, Carol Ann Bryan Sousa, Henry Akau, and Wade Jones. evening. A surprise was later presented with the comedic entertainment of Frank DeLima as he kept the party in stitches with his local humor. As the week was closing, many said they looked forward to the 45th class reunion. It was then time for the reunion committee – Carol Ann Bryan Sousa, Elliott Chamizo, Barbara Nobrega Akau, Dr. Collin Dang, Billy Lum, Timmy Wong and Wanda Hoopai Wong – to close the book on the 40th…and begin planning the 45th. ■ Alum and high school teacher Elliott Chamizo ’61 is with Maryknoll’s English department and advises the school yearbook staff. Winter 2002 13 REUNIONS The Class of ’69: Celebrating the Fabulous Fifty! by Lynette Mau Seto ’69 On Saturday, July 7, 2001, thirty-one members of the infamous Class of ’69 gathered at the Japanese Cultural Center in Moiliili to celebrate their 50th birthday. Classmates came from near and far to join in the celebration – to eat, laugh, “talk story,” renew old friendships, and develop new ones. The evening began with a welcome by Sterling Yee and the invocation by Fr. Gary Secor (written by Sterling!). We remembered in silence the classmates no longer with us: Irma Leong, Derek Pregill, Roddy Rodriguez and Shanley Saiki. Sterling read letters and emails from absent classmates who sent their best wishes: Mike Horgan (Pensacola, FL), Alvin Lee (Redmond, WA) and Jean Andrade Darling (Berwick, ME). Everyone enjoyed background music composed of “oldies but goodies,” which was arranged by Sterling. A highlight of the evening was the distribution of door prizes, donated by Teresa “Tiki” Ching Wong (TAJ Clubhouse); Lita Lavaro Delahunty (Verizon t-shirts); Lynette Mau Seto (Bank of Hawaii umbrellas); Renee Chang Yamada (State Farm goodies); Keala Wong Cupp (miscellaneous gifts); Cecil Wong Mukai (roses from Mukai Farms); Cyril Goshima (case of wine); and Robyn Razon Calhoun, Mike Caires and Bernie Oda Alejandro (Ala Moana gift certificates). The generosity of these individuals enabled everyone to go home with at least one door prize, and in some cases two. Another highlight was the group rendition of “Happy Birthday to Us!” led by Renee and Charlotte Duarte Hite as we cut and distributed the birthday cake donated by Sterling. We all received bunny cups filled with candy favors made by Tiki, Susan, Keala and Lynette, as well as a bag of goodies donated by the Maryknoll Alumni Office. The evening came to an end too quickly. Out-of-towners promised to keep in touch and everyone vowed to meet up again to celebrate our renewed friendships. Those who just couldn’t say “goodbye” continued the party in the parking lot. For a few others, it continued at Kincaid’s in Ward Warehouse. It was truly an evening to remember! ■ Lynette Mau Seto ’69 is a Human Resources Specialist at Bank of Hawaii, where she has been employed for 27 years. 14 Knoller The Class of 1969 Mahalo to everyone who attended: Margie Tam Araki Phyllis Au Mike Caires (Makawao, HI) Robyn Razon Calhoun June Yim Ching Mei Ling (Mary) Chun (Flagstaff, AZ) Keala Wong Cupp Bobby Daguman (Las Vegas, NV) Ryan Dang Lita Lavaro Delahunty Mike Hee Charlotte Duarte Hite Milton Inouye Sharon Kiyabu Katahira Marilyn Lee Kurata Bryan Lau Burni Farm Leonard Leslie Mow Cecilia Wong Mukai (Hilo, HI) Patty Ong Osaki Genie Pang (Phoenix, AZ) Louie Rapoza Delia Marcos Ricardo (Laguna Woods, CA) Don Riley Gary Secor Lynette Mau Seto Lynne Taniguchi Watanabe Frances Chow Wong Renee Chang Yamada Sterling Yee Susan Young Class of 1981 Celebrates 20 Year Reunion By Serena Kyi-Yim ’81 The Class of 1981 celebrated its 20th reunion from July 20 to 22, 2001, piggybacking on the heels of the (very successful) 2nd Annual Alumni Week hosted by Maryknoll’s Alumni Association. Festivities began with reminiscing in our very dear Rogers Hall, which included an onolicious luau dinner cooked up by Kanani Irvine Stern and family. There was much talk and laughter, especially as the “celebrities” (aka MHS grads) won door prizes that ranged from Portuguese sausages (donated by Dale Gouvea) to VCRs & DVD players to an overnighter at the Hawaii Prince Hotel! But alas, three hours weren’t enough...oh, no! Almost everyone trooped over to Kincaid’s at Ward Warehouse for more! Saturday night was a little more “formal,” with a Chinese dinner at the Seafood Village Restaurant in the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The ambiance was invigorating; the food, mouth-watering; the company, scintillating; and the laughs just kept on rolling with a wild game of “Scavenger Hunt” dreamed up by Elizabeth Chun Chock. The infamous Class of ’81 spirit was definitely alive and well. Everyone walked away with something including Lynn Ho Nishida who won the grand prize – a Toshiba flat screen TV with integrated VCR! The evening was capped off with another foray into Honolulu’s nightlife – Sansei Restaurant. Sunday was absolutely stunning, from the perspective of Waimanalo. Dale Gouvea graciously hosted grads and families at his ohana’s beach house. Again, more food and fun, especially in the party The Class of 1981 gathers in Rogers Hall. bouncer where at one point, all the little kids were ousted and the big kids (yeah, MHS grads) took over. After a year’s worth of planning and coordinating, headed by Emily Wong McCollum, the Class of 1991’s 10th year reunion was an enjoyable weekend. With the help of Carianne Chang Abara, Raenee Cambonga, Jennifer Ishii Willing, Jonathan Lau, and Tanya Sismar, the two-day event brought old friends together again. Thirty-three classmates attended dinner on Saturday, October 6, 2001, at Dole Ballrooms for food, drink, and laughter. We were also pleasantly surprised with the attendance of Colette Kaufman’s father (and our former teacher), Jared Kaufman ’58. As we reminisced, stories of good times were remembered and new times shared. The night was extended at Ocean’s Nightclub. On Sunday, October 7, 2001, despite warnings of a flash flood, 14 classmates gathered for the barbeque at Magic Island. The weather cleared up and the sun peeked through the clouds by lunchtime. Again, we enjoyed good food and good company. The 10 years that had passed since our graduation day on June 7, 1991 seemed to disappear. Talk of the “next” reunion swirled around…maybe Vegas? Any takers to coordinate… ■ Jen Ka’aha’aina Torres and daughter Saige Ka’aha’ainaTorres, with Emily Wong and Amber Abara, daughter of Carianne Chang Abara. MARYKNOLL SCHOOL 2000 – 2001 Annual Giving Report Investing in Our Students and Our Future Winter 2002 31 Dear Friends of Maryknoll, In his 1972 induction speech to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Yogi Berra told his audience, “Nobody does nothin’ alone.” Surely, even a quick glance through the succeeding pages of our annual report illustrates Yogi’s words, for Maryknoll School cannot and does not do it alone. The succeeding pages record the names of individuals, corporations, foundations and others who support Maryknoll with their dollars, their time, and their expertise. To all of them, we say mahalo for your kindness and your continuing generosity. What is not included here are the names of the scores of volunteers without whose help we could not begin to do the number of important things that we do. To our Board members who give so generously of their resources; to our parents and the Parent/Teacher Guild who support the school so well in and out of the classrooms; to the many who serve on committees, and who assist with special events such as our luau, golf tournament, and Kekumano Scholarship Dinner; to the small army of volunteers who help chaperone, coach, tutor, and mentor our students; to all of those people who we call on so often to help us in important ways; to all of you, please accept the grateful thanks from all of us in the Maryknoll community. Finally, I want to thank our faculty and staff who go well beyond the limits of our stated expectations in serving our students and their families. So, Yogi is, indeed, right, “Nobody does nothin’ alone.” The named and the unnamed have all contributed to the continued success of Maryknoll, have contributed significantly to the support of nearly 1,400 students, and have brought us to this important milestone of celebrating our diamond anniversary – 75 years of outstanding service to this community. Thank you, Dear Maryknoll Donor: Michael E. Baker President, Maryknoll School The Maryknoll Board of Trustees is dedicated to ensuring the quality of education at Maryknoll – for the students in all grades. Every student matters. This goal requires the involvement of the parents, students, teachers and administration and staff. In addition to the people resources, this goal also requires financial resources. The generous contribution from the Maryknoll family helps us to achieve these goals. In this Annual Giving Report, we feel it is especially important in these turbulent times to recognize and express our sincere gratitude to those who support Maryknoll School at all levels of giving. Every contribution is important. The annual fund bridges the gap between tuition income and the real cost of educating our students. The results of your giving enable us to grant scholarships, upkeep facilities and furnish classrooms with state-of-the-art learning tools. Gifts to Maryknoll also make possible more humble endeavors: school assembly programs, club activities, field trips, pre-and post-season athletic events, and awards recognizing our many outstanding students. These activities make a difference. Every program expands our students’ learning environment. We realize that you make a choice to bring your time, talent, treasure and service to Maryknoll School. For every gift, we are sincerely grateful. Sincerely, Alfred B. Fernandes, Jr. Chairman, Maryknoll School Board of Trustees 32 Knoller WAYS OF GIVING TO MARYKNOLL SCHOOL To contribute to Maryknoll School, or to create a new scholarship or gift, please call the Development Office at (808) 952-7310. AIM FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION The foundation for giving at Maryknoll is the ongoing yearly appeal. It raises funds to bridge the gap between tuition and the real cost of educating students at Maryknoll School. Annual giving is not just about making a contribution. It’s about investing in the future of the institution and, above all, in each young person who is entrusted to our care. LEGACY LEVELS OF GIVING Maryknoll values the ongoing commitment of its donors. We have established Legacy Levels of Giving to recognize cumulative levels of giving to Maryknoll, including all contributions to funds and appeals. • • • • NOBLESSE OBLIGE MARYKNOLL MISSIONERS SPARTAN MARYKNOLL OHANA $200,000 and above $100,000 - $199,999 $50,000 - $99,999 $25,000 - $49,999 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN The Capital Campaign is a drive to raise funds for building improvements, additions, and endowments. Large gift pledges are usually scheduled with payments over a period of years. Gifts of cash, stocks, bonds, and other negotiable securities are the most common types of contributions. Continued support of AIM and the Capital Campaign is vital to the financial well-being and future growth of Maryknoll School. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS A number of generous individuals have established endowed named scholarships. Restrictive gifts may be made directly to these funds. Earl Joseph & Ann York Gallian Memorial Scholarship Fund In 1993, Dr. Franklin Young ’60 established this scholarship at the request of Mr. and Mrs. Gallian, who became fond of our school through their lifelong friendship with Dr. Young. This scholarship is awarded every year to female high school students who demonstrate the potential to contribute significantly to Maryknoll’s extracurricular programs. Father James Jackson Endowed Scholarship In 1986, Father James Jackson, former associate pastor of Sacred Heart Church and School Chaplain, established a scholarship in memory of his mother, Clara Rose de Lima Calouri. This scholarship provides assistance to students demonstrating a willingness to contribute to the continued excellence of the Maryknoll family. Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship Created in 1998 to honor the Monsignor who epitomized our Maryknoll School motto, Noblesse Oblige, “To whom much is given, much is expected,” this scholarship is funded by the proceeds from the Monsignor Charles Kekumano Scholarship Dinner. The Kekumano Scholarship is awarded annually to a returning Maryknoll junior or senior who demonstrates financial need, is Roman Catholic, has a solid academic record, and exemplifies a spirit that takes the teachings of the Catholic faith and puts them into action by serving others, showing a keen interest in both the school and the greater community, and working toward the promotion of justice. The Maryknoll Fathers’ Scholarship In 1998, a challenge gift of $100,000 was given to Maryknoll when the Maryknoll Fathers returned Sacred Heart Parish and the school to the care of the Diocese of Honolulu. This gift will help fund scholarships for Maryknoll students. Sacred Heart Parish Scholarship Established in 1998, this scholarship provides 50% tuition assistance to a newly-admitted middle school or high school student who is a member of Sacred Heart Parish. This student must be a practicing Roman Catholic who demonstrates financial need, carries a minimum grade point average of 3.50, and is actively involved in community service or church-related activities. Rudolph A. and Ralph W. Sylva Scholarship Established in 2001 from the estae of Rudolph Sylva ’35, this scholarship is awarded annually to students with proven scholastic promise, with preference given to those of Hawaiian or partHawaiian ancestry. Vance O. Smith Endowed Scholarship In the 1980s, the Bishop Trust Company, Limited, as Trustee of the Vance O. Smith Trust, established this scholarship for Maryknoll School. Mr. Smith had a special interest in social studies and history and willed his remaining trust assets to organizations established and operated exclusively for educational purposes. This scholarship is awarded to deserving students who display academic promise and financial need. Robert “Foxy” Thomas Scholarship Established in 1992, this scholarship is given in honor of Robert “Foxy” Thomas. Mr. Thomas was an avid sports enthusiast who admired the competitiveness of Maryknoll’s athletes, particularly in basketball, which led him to leave the bulk of his estate to fund this scholarship. The Robert “Foxy” Thomas Scholarship is awarded to students based on their demonstrated special qualities of leadership, scholarship, potential for contribution to the school’s co-curricular programs, and financial need. Winter 2002 33 RESTRICTED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS OTHER FORMS OF GIVING Every year, Maryknoll receives funding from various individuals and organizations for scholarship awards. In addition to the above gifts, Maryknoll School also encourages other forms of giving as described below: Ching Scholarship Created in 1996 by the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation, this scholarship is awarded to Maryknoll students who are citizens of the United States. Planned Giving Planned Giving provides an opportunity for donors to support Maryknoll through deferred giving. Examples of such programs include bequests, life income plans, gifts subject to a retained life estate, gifts of life insurance, and charitable lead trusts. In addition, you can name Maryknoll in your will to help ensure the vitality of Maryknoll School for future generations of students. Planned giving may be discussed with Maryknoll’s Development Office or the donor’s own financial adviser to determine personal application. DeFontes Scholarship Established by Mrs. Georgia E. Blake Rice ’55, the DeFontes Scholarship is awarded to qualifying Maryknoll students. Father William Desmond Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1986 by families belonging to Sacred Heart Parish in honor of Father William Demond, presiding pastor of Sacred Heart Church from 1981 to 1985. Father Francis Diffley Scholarship Established in 1998, this scholarship honors Father Francis Diffley, the last Maryknoll priest to serve as pastor of Sacred Heart Church and president of Maryknoll School. Maryknoll School Parent/Teacher Guild Scholarship Every year, our Parent/Teacher Guild generously donates portions of the proceeds from their successful fundraiser to support scholarships for students with financial need. SPECIAL GIFTS Restricted financial gifts for special programs, specific purchases, or other needs within Maryknoll School not included in the budget for a given fiscal year come under this category. Special gifts benefit the school while addressing the particular interests of donors. Memorial and Named Gifts These gifts honor a family member, friend, or loved one and can be made to the school with the assistance of our Development Office. Gifts in Kind Any item that does not have a professional appraisal is considered a gift in kind. Donations of computers, office equipment, furniture, and other items of value to Maryknoll are greatly appreciated. Acceptance of such items is subject to qualifications in our Gift Acceptance Policy, and usage and space constraints. Gifts of Service Parents, friends, and businesses who offer their services to the school without remuneration are greatly valued by the Maryknoll family. Aloha Auto Auction Generous gifts of used automobiles provide additional money to our operating fund. The Development Office can answer questions about this program and make arrangements regarding donation. Mike McKenna’s “Spirit of Giving” for Education Program For every new car, truck, or van sold to parents or friends of Maryknoll, Mike McKenna will donate $100 to the school. Qualifying vehicles may be purchased at one of three locations: Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford, Mike McKenna’s Windward Volkswagen/Mazda, and McKenna Motor Cars in Kailua-Kona. Schoolpop.com Fundraising Program Shop online at schoolpop.com, where hundreds of brand name stores offer products such as clothing, books, music, and toys. Santos ’93 Photo courtesy of FEMA I live in Jersey City, New Jersey. This city is right across the Hudson River from the island of Manhattan. Both places share its quality of diversity composed of so many ethnic groups and cultures. After September 11, it wasn’t only the Manhattan skyline that changed after the towers fell. My experience has left me to ponder what aspect of a human being’s nature holds the potential to cause so much chaos and unimaginable evil. This is a story – my story – of what I saw and how I came to assist those who fell victim to acts of terrorism by people who raped and redefined the meaning of a religion. These people believed that in order to gain God’s favor meant to kill thousands, to orphan so many children, and to destroy families and loved ones. This act tore the line between common animals and man. “WHO COULD EVER SURVIVE THAT?” It started off as a perfect morning. I was coming from Bayonne Park, the next town over from Jersey City. I heard on the radio that a plane had struck one of the towers of the World Trade Center (WTC). I only had to turn around to see for myself the body of smoke and 52 Knoller flames. I decided to head toward Liberty State Park to get a better view. Within minutes of leaving my car, I saw the second plane hit the second building. It had an impact that, even from across the Hudson River, made me jerk backwards. Then the screams started. Those who were at the park began running to their cars. Some who decided to stay had trouble keeping a steady posture. I was the same way. I couldn’t feel my legs for a while. That morning I had an appointment in Manhattan in the area of the WTC towers. I was going to take a certification exam but it was cancelled the night before. I stayed until park rangers began to instruct people to leave so that appropriate personnel could enter the park. I was on my way out when I decided to ask one of the rangers if volunteers were needed to stay. I informed him that I was a student from the nursing school in town. I was told to wait at the pier for other volunteers and medical personnel. After several minutes the first of the towers collapsed, followed by the second. Manhattan disappeared in a big cloud of dust that reached the water. Our collective thought as a group was, “Who could ever survive that?” The ferries began to arrive with so few wounded and so many beyond help. New York City’s hospitals were already flooded with 911 calls and incoming wounded. Jersey City has the only state designated trauma center; patients had to be transported from the city to the hospital. All tunnels and bridges near the lower side of Manhattan were closed off to pedestrian traffic. We had to help those we could from the ferries and onto ambulances that took them to the medical center. There were lines of ambulances waiting, but there weren’t that many injured to carry. Already, too many were dead. The ferries had to unload the injured and pick up body bags for the retrieval of the dead. though it had been several years since I graduated from Maryknoll High School, the spirit and caring that I learned being in the Maryknoll family is part of who I am even to this day. After years of wear, I lost the shirt soon after I laundered it a few days after September 11th. In a way I think it lasted just long enough to remind me of these qualities that I almost forgot. Days after the tragedy, the Liberty State Park remained closed. Numerous cars remained in the “Park and Ride” lot waiting for their owners to return. So many cars were towed away. Their owners never came back. A town nearby Jersey City lost almost half its townspeople that day. They all worked in different firms in the WTC towers. THE YOUNGEST VICTIMS With the injured came the harsh reality of this act of terror. Five children were among the many others from the site who lost their parents. They were motionless, covered in dust and soot. Most of them had dried up tear marks streaming down their small soiled cheeks. One little girl had a hole the size of my fist on her lower back, due to falling debris. She lost her mom in the chaos of fleeing the WTC. A little boy got separated from his mother and was lifted out of harm’s way by what he says was a police officer or a fireman. He said he heard the cries of his mom fade into the thickness of the dust cloud. He was also injured by falling debris; his back was covered in shards of glass. I leaned over to him. He was lying on his front side since the pieces of glass were still stuck in his back. He reached over to me and placed his hand over my chest and asked, “Who’s that?” in a muffled voice. I almost forgot the shirt I was wearing – my old and worn Maryknoll t-shirt. He was asking about the drawing of the Spartan on the upper left hand side. He said he looked funny but he also looked very brave. I told the boy that I saw the Spartan in him. I told him how brave and how tough a little fighter he was. It wasn’t long until he and the others were transported to the hospital. I don’t know if they ever found their parents. One good thing was that they had relatives who lived in New Jersey by their side at the hospital. “FAITH, COMPASSION, HOPE... COURAGE” Today, I carry the memories in my mind. I remember the children, the people injured and the many others who lost their lives that day. I remember the picture of the Maryknoll Spartan on my t-shirt. I never thought that I would come to a point where a child whose innocence was abruptly taken away that day, who was too tired to shed another tear because of the pain from his injuries and his loss, could remind me of why I decided to stay in that park. I give credit to my parents and family for instilling those qualities of caring, hope, love, and service within me. I am thankful that the Maryknoll sisters and faculty I met while at Maryknoll High School, and the Maryknoll family in the Marshall Islands, gave me the chance to sharpen my ability in sharing those qualities with others. I only wish that I was able to do more. Wanting to become a registered nurse in my mind is no longer a question. That day removed all my doubts. I look to continue my nursing education because I believe that I already have the compassion needed to help others heal and to find a sense of comfort in times of uncertainty. I don’t see myself as anything more than a simple guy who tried to do the right thing. I didn’t write this personal account to advertise, publicize or glorify what had happened on September 11, 2001. It was an emotional experience that I would not wish on anyone else. I mentioned Maryknoll High School a few times because of its focus on so many aspects in caring such as helping others, faith, compassion, hope, especially the courage to uphold these qualities. I experienced this when I was there as a student. I was fortunate enough to have learned these qualities from family but I was privileged to have attended a school that laid its foundation in the further development and strengthening of these ideals. I think we need more schools like that. September 11, 2001 was a day that will remain in my mind for a long time. From there, I walk toward the future uncertain but with the hope that the world soon draws the curtain on violence. These cowardly acts of terrorism do nothing more than to provoke a retaliatory response that endangers more lives. In the end, we just wonder if it was all worth it. I hope and pray that this tragedy does not happen again. Life is just too precious. “I realized that even though it had been several years since I graduated from Maryknoll High School, the spirit and caring that I learned being in the Maryknoll family is part of who I am even to this day.” SPIRIT RENEWED AMIDST SUFFERING The emotional and physical toll on all of the volunteers and personnel became evident. I had to take a couple of steps back due to the enormity of the situation. We were all tired and exhausted. More people arrived to help out and more than enough arrived to relieve those who came earlier. I needed to leave after six or seven hours in that park. Some stayed, as I have found out later on, for another 16 hours. The next day I went over to the hospital where I attend nursing school. I found myself helping out there as well, and I donated blood after the day was over. I saw news reports on TV that evening and saw the impact of the planes and the collapse of the towers again. Seeing it on television had no comparison to how you felt actually witnessing the event unfold in front of your eyes. I thought about what the little boy asked me. I looked at the stained picture of the Spartan after I went home that day. I realized that even Winter 2002 53 Non-Profit Organization U.S. Postage Maryknoll School 1526 Alexander Street Honolulu, HI 96822 R H 9 PAID Honolulu, HI Permit No. 603 emembering the Past onouring the Present You are invited to attend the 5TH ANNUAL MONSIGNOR CHARLES A.
