It is a quest for excellence. All the comforts and facilities that we enjoy, the technical gizmos that we love to use, are the result of a thirst for higher knowledge, a passion for innovation, a quest for excellence and a commitment to progress. It follows that one should strive hard to make the world a better place to live. Comfest, an Inter-Collegiate Commerce Fiesta was hosted by the Dept. of Commerce on 30th August 2013. The Valediction of Comfest was presided over by Thiru. P. Thangamani, Hon'ble Minister for Industries, Govt. of Tamil Nadu. In his valedictory address, Thiru. P. Thangamani exhorted that the students should shape their future by utilizing the new opportunities and get trained for employment. Large numbers students from the city colleges participated in a variety of themebased competitions such as, Memoritter, Cine Vista, Elevator Pitching, etc. with their enthusiasm. Today numerous vocations and fields are available to modern youth. No matter what field or profession you choose, put your heart and soul in it, master it, excel in it. Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, Dr. Abdul Kalam, Narayan Murthy, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Sachin Tendulkar, etc. are honoured because they are the masters of their respective field. Successful people do not do different things. They do things differently. That difference is excellence and innovation which makes man – the highest form of creation. Lives of great men all remind us, We can make our lives sublime. And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of Time. Let us, then, be up and doing With a heart for any fate Still achieving, Still pursuing. Be a hero in the battle of life Principal Dr.M.K. Malathi felicitating Thiru P. Thangamani, Hon’ble Minister for Industries , Govt. of Tamil Nadu @ Comfest ( also seen Hon. Secy. Er. Gautam Vaid) The Hon'ble Minister distributed prizes to the winners of the various events. Earlier the program was inaugurated by Dr. J. Sadakkadulla, Regional Director, Reserve Bank of India. The Guest apprised the students of the opportunities in the banking sector. He also highlighted – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. 1 Vol. 16 • January 2014 Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women RBI’S role in Indian economy. Mrs. Ritu Khanna, Mg. Director, Paradigm Ventures Private Ltd., and Dr. Seshadri, Legal Consultant, were present on the occasion. Dr. J. Sadakkadulla, Regional Director, Reserve Bank of India. @ Comfest 7 Day NSS Camp cards and mehendi designing and Yoga and meditation training etc. A free eye check-up by a team of doctors from Dr. Agarwal Eye Hospital, a General Health check up by a team of doctors from the Chettinad Hospital and Research Centre and a free Dental check up by a team of doctors from the Vasan Dental Care were conducted for the slum dwellers. The NSS unit also arranged a Legal Awareness programme by a Senior Advocate, High Court, a Cancer Awareness programme by ‘Chennai Turns Pink’ and an awareness programme on pain relief methods by a Physiotherapist for the benefit of the slum dwellers. They also distributed pamphlets on issues like Rain Water Harvesting, female infanticide etc. in the slum. The NSS members also conducted many competitions like singing, dancing, mono-acting etc. in which women and children participated enthusiastically. Reaching out the Under-privileged The NSS Unit organized a Seven Day Special NSS Camp at Daya Sadan, a Charitable Home, Otteri for the benefit of the slum dwellers residing in & around Ayanavaram. The Camp was inaugurated on 12th October 2013 by Dr. M. Thambidurai, Member of Parliament, Govt. of India and Thiru N. Balaganga, Member of Parliament, Govt. of India. Thiru. N. Balaganga made a comparison of the old and the current educational system. Dr.Thambidurai appreciated the social service rendered by the NSS students. Thiru N. Balaganga, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Govt. of India @ NSS Camp The Valedictory Ceremony of the 7 Day NSS Special Camp was held on 18th October 2013. Thiru. V. Neelakandan, Hon’ble Member of the Legislative Assembly. He exhorted the audience and the NSS members to work for the upliftment of the weaker section of the society and strive to make India corruption free country. A large number of slum dwellers benefited from the camp activities. Sargam 2013 Dr. M. Thambidurai, Member of Parliament, Govt. of India @ NSS Camp The camp organized various training camps like FirstAid training programme by the doctors from the St. John’s Ambulance, a workshop on phenyl preparation, candle and chalk piece making & making of pots, 2 A Pageant of Fine Arts Sargam 2013, a Mega Inter-Collegiate Cultural Fiesta was organized on 13th December 2013. The Fiesta was inaugurated by Ms. Jennifer McIntyre, US Consul General. Kalaimamani Kumari Sachu, Secretary, GSS Chronicle Iyal Isai Nadaga Mandram, Govt. of TN., Dr. Sankar, Music Director, and Ms. Madhumita, Cine Director also graced the occasion. In the inaugural address, Ms. Jennifer McIntyre highlighted the significance of real education which is not mere acquisition of degrees and gaining knowledge in particular subject but preparing the students for their lives. Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women The 19th Annual Convocation ceremony was held on 5th October 2013. Shri. Mohan Parasaran, Solicitor General of India delivered the convocation address & exhorted the students to choose the appropriate degree and career based on their aptitude .The Guest conferred the degrees on around 608 degree holders of which 24 were University Rank Holders. University Toppers and University Rank Holders were awarded pure Gold Medalians. Earlier the Principal M.K. Malathi presented a report on the academic achievements of the college and administered the oath to new graduates. Shri. Mohan Parasaran also released the College Magazine for the year 2012-2013 and the Hon. Secy. received the first copy. Blessing Ceremony Ms. Jennifer McIntyre, US Consul General delivers inaugural address @ Sargam 2013 The inaugural was followed by numerous on- stage and off- stage events, Solo Singing, Hair Styling, Adapt Tune, Group Dance, Voice Over, T- shirt designing and Poster making. Numerous students from twenty colleges participated in all the events enthusiastically. The Valedictory function was presided over by Shri. Thirumurugan, Cine Director, Thiru Piraisudan, Lyricist, Shri. Nagendraprasad, Choreographer & Actor, Dr. Ritharajan, Carnatic Musician, Ms. Vinaya, Classical Singer and Shri. Abhinay, Actor. The Winner’s Trophy was bagged by Anna Adharsh College for Women and the Trophy for Maximum Participation was clinched by Justice Basheer Ahmed Syed College. 19th Annual Graduation Day Invoking the Blessing To mark the commencement of classes for first year Under Graduate students, the college organized the Blessing Ceremony on 20th June 2013 invoking the blessing of Gurudev Shri Shantivijaiji before commencing their University Education. Thiru. A. Navaneetha Krishnan, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission was the Chief Guest. He stressed that good teachers are essential for good education. He also highlighted the importance of setting goals by the youngsters to achieve success. The Hon. Secretary Shri. Gautam Vaid and Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi graced the occasion and counseled the freshers. Senior students welcomed the newcomers with flowers and sweets. Around 500 students began their academic journey. Navaneetha Krishnan, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission speaks @ Blessing Ceremony 3 Vol. 16 • January 2014 Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women Muthamizh Vizha Showcasing Tamil Heritage Muthamizh Vizha, an Inter-Collegiate Tamil Fest was hosted by the Department of Tamil on 19th August 2013.The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Rajaram I.A.S., Secretary to Govt., Tamil Development & Information Department, Govt. of Tamilnadu and Kavingnar. Arrivumathi, Poet & Lyricist. Dr. Rajaram, also released the College Calender for the current year. He highlighted the rich heritage of Tamil language and greatness of Thirukural. He urged the audience to use the Tamil language in its purity. Kavingnar. Arivumathi highlighted Women’s education and their achievement in the contemporary world. Students from 20 colleges participated and exhibited their skills in the events like solo song, dance, skit, etc. Dr. Rajaram I.A.S., Secretary to Govt., Tamil Development & Information Department, Govt. of Tamilnadu @ Muthamizh Vizha Talentia Talent Hunt Talentia, an Intra-Collegiate Commerce Fiesta was hosted by the Department of Commerce on 20th August 2013. Shri. Sunil Paliwal I.A.S, Secretary to Govt., Commercial Taxes & Registration Dept., Govt. of Tamilnadu motivated the students to be passionate about their goals to attain success in life and manage time effectively. The events like Treasure Hunt, Memoritter, Cine Vista, Elevator Pitching etc were conducted to test the mettle of the students. 4 Shri. Sunil Paliwal I.A.S, Secretary to Govt., Commercial Taxes & Registration Dept., Govt. of Tamilnadu @ Talentia Investiture Ceremony Taking charge The installation of the Student’s Council for the year 2013-2014 - was held on the 30th July, 2013. Tmt. Pooja Kulkarni, IAS., Joint Secretary to Govt., Industries Dept. Govt. of Tamil Nadu was the Guest. The Hon. Secretary Shri. Gautam Vaid and Principal Dr.M.K. Malathi graced the occasion. Tmt. Pooja Kulkarni, IAS., Jt. Secretary to Govt., Industries Dept., Govt. of Tamilnadu @ Investiture Ceremony The Office Bearers of the Student’s Council were vested with power by the Guest. The ceremonial lamps were lit to signify their assumption of their office. The Principal Dr. M. K.Malathi administrated the oath to the newly elected office bearers of the Council. Tmt. Pooja Kulkarni emphasized that the objective of education is to create a well-rounded individual as well as to make the society a better place to live. Karishma Disseminating the National Language Karishma, an Inter-Collegiate Hindi Festival, organized by the Department of Hindi was inaugurated by GSS Chronicle Shri. Abhash Kumar, I.P.S., Inspector General of Police- Modernization, Tamilnadu Police on 19th September 2013. He recited a few poems and emphasized the importance of the Hindi language. Students from different colleges of the city participated in various events like Slogan writings, Tatkalik Bashan, Poetry Writing and Drama. Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women Quiz, Exhibition, Poster designing, Rangoli and Street plays were conducted and students from 16 colleges actively participated in them. In the Valedictory function, the Chief Guest, Thiru. M. Vijaya Kumar I.A.S., Secretary, Tamilnadu Public Service Commission, highlighted the importance of consumer protection. G.S.S. Citizen Consumer Club bagged IInd Best Consumer Club award for 2012-13 instituted by Govt. of Tamilnadu. Red Ribbon Club Creating Awareness Shri. Abhash Kumar, I.P.S., Inspector General of Police- Modernization, Tamilnadu Police addresses @ Karishma National Consumer Day GSS Red Ribbon Club was inaugurated by Thiru.Vivekanandan I.A.S., Project Director, TANSAC on 20th September 2013. Thiru. Vivekanandan, highlighted the recent progress in the treatment of AIDS like Anti Retro Therapy. He also enumerated the statistics about the spread of AIDS in various countries. The programme came to an end with a mime enacted by the students. Thiru. M. Vijaya Kumar I.A.S., Secretary, Tamilnadu Public Service Commission @ National Consumers Day The Citizen Consumer Club celebrated National Consumer Day in association with Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department, Govt, of Tamilnadu on 18th December, 2013. Thiru. S. Vijayan, Dy. Commissioner, (South) Civil Supplies & Consumer Protection Department, Govt. of Tamilnadu inaugurated the function. He exhorted the student community to conduct consumer awareness programmes to enlighten the people . Thiru.G.Ravi kumar, Dy. Secy. & Principal viewing a mimetic performance @ RRC 5 Vol. 16 • January 2014 Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women Bharathi Vizha Homage to the Tamil Bard Commission, Govt. of Tamilnadu. The Hon. Secretary Shri. P. Gautam Vaid and Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi graced the occasion. Events like Fashion Show, Carol singing, and Skit were conducted. Lord Parshwanath Birth Celebration Dr. Ravishankar, Regional Jt. Director of Collegiate Education @ Bharathi Vizha Bharathi Vizha, an Intra-collegiate Fest was organized by Tamil Pavai Mandram of the Dept. of Tamil on 19th December 2013. Prof. Dr. Ravishankar, Regional Jt. Director of Collegiate Education, Chennai, elaborated on the greatness of Bharathiyar. A special lecture, highlighting the interesting incidents in Bharathiyar’s life was delivered by Dr. Ulaganayagi Palani, Secretary, Bharathiyar Sangam. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the Speech, Drawing, Poetry, Singing and Essay competitions. The 2891st Birth Anniversary of Lord Parshwanath was celebrated on 27th December, 2013 with great fanfare. Around 2000 staff & students of college took out a procession in prime areas of Vepery carrying placards, singing bhajans and spreading the message of Lord Parshwanath. Jain Acharya Parampujya Chandreshsurishwarji delivered sermons to the pious devotee. This was followed by a special programme at the college premises in which the students presented speeches, Bhajans and religious dances in praise of the Bhagwan. The air was filled with religious fervor and mahaprasad was distributed. Secy. with devotees) Independence Day Celebration Patriotic Fervour Bishop Rev. Dr. M. Prakash, Chairman, State Minorities Commission, Govt. of Tamilnadu, delivers Christmas message @ Minorities Rights Day ‘Minorities Rights Day’ & Christmas Day were celebrated with much pomp on 19th December 2013. The Christmas Message was given by, Bishop Rev., Dr. M. Prakash, Chairman, State Minorities 6 The 67th Independence Day was celebrated with customary enthusiasm and zeal on 15th August 2013. The Principal Dr. M. K. Malathi hoisted the National Flag. The students took pledge to protect the unity and heritage of our country. In her address, the Principal stressed that success is not a destination, but a milestone in a long journey. Highlighting the role of youth, she urged them to have a clear vision and transform that vision into action. GSS Chronicle She was of the opinion that the modern youth are knowledgeable and well informed. However they need the right direction. Teachers and educational institutions have a major role to play in channelizing the students in the right direction. Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women Collegiate Fiesta on 14th August 2013. Shri. Suresh Kumar, Executive Director, Indian Oil Corporation inaugurated the fiesta and addressed the students. Many on -stage events and off- stage events like Management Act, Stressy Muddle, Brand walk, Build Your Dream, Clever and Creative & Re-Editorial were conducted in which students from all the departments participated with verve. Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi hositing the flag @ Independence Day (seen) students taking Pledge Corpstar Corps Harp Corpstar, an Intra-Collegiate Corp Fest, was organized by Department of Corporate Secretaryship (Shift-I) on 16th August 2013. The fest was inaugurated by Sri. P. Raju Iyer, Chairman, Southern India Regional Council of ICAI-CMA. He spoke about the scope of Cost Accountants in India and their contribution towards the world. Students from various departments participated in all events. Ms.Corpstar ’13 Title was bagged by Ms. Rupal A.Chordia of II BCS (Eve) and Overall Shield by the Department of Commerce (Day). Shri. The Festival was inaugurated by Dr. V. Kanagarajan, Chair Professor, Dept. of Aerospace Engineering, M.I.T., Anna University. A variety of events like a power point presentation, Matmod, Cross Swords & Adzap were conducted that brought out the talents of the students of 16 different colleges in and around the city. Dr. A. Sangaran, District Rotaract Chairman on 22nd August 2013. Ms. Prerna, III B.Com was sworn in as the President of GSS Rotary Club. Thiru.Rtn.Vivek Harinarain exhorted the students to think big and stay focused. Thiru. Rtn. Dr. A. Sangaran, District Rotaract Chairman, outlined the activities of the Rotaract Club in a nutshell. Teachers’ Day Celebration Prism Glorifying the Guiding stars Management Fiesta Prism, an Intra-Collegiate Information Systems Management Festival, was organized on 12th September 2013. It was inaugurated by Shri. K.P. Pandiarajan, Mg. Director & CEO, Ma Foi Strategic Consultants Pvt. Ltd. He emphasized the need to develop the Leadership qualities and Entrepreneurial Skills in the students apart from their academic studies. The events included Adzap, Business Quiz, Corpo-Walk, Corpo Mela & Logo Designing. Shri. K.P. Pandiarajan, Mg. Director & CEO, Ma Foi Strategic Consultants Pvt. Ltd. @ Prism 8 Paryushan Parva was celebrated on 31st August 2013 in our college. The Hon. Secy. Shri. Gautam Vaid and Principal M.K. Malathi presided over the ceremony. The principal highlighted the essence of Paryushan Parva. The Hon. Secretary outlined the concept of God and the different religions which lead to God. He emphasized the importance of being truthful and be a good humanbeing. The college wore a festive look with the cultural programmes presented by the students. Diya Dance by GSS students @ Paryushan Parva The Teachers’ Day was celebrated on 5th September 2013 in the College. The Hon. Secy. Shri Gautam Vaid felicitated the teachers. He conveyed the message that every teacher should work with passion and play an important role in honing the skills of future citizens. The Principal focused on the great personalities who were basically teachers. All the teachers recalled their memories of their favorite teachers. OIKOS Chiseling the Economists OIKOS, an Intra Collegiate Economics Fest, was organized by the Department of Economics on 11th September 2013. It was presided over by Dr. K.R. Shanmugam, Director, Madras School of Economics. In his inaugural address, he encouraged the students to chisel every failure into a stepping stone to success. Various events like Political Cartooning, Mime on ‘Youth Today’ and Fashion show with eco- friendly products, Poster Making on Global Warming and power point presentation on Feminomics were conducted to bring out the students’ latent potential. GSS Chronicle Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women function and encouraged the students to develop their reading habit and update themselves from various sources of information. The students made a presentation on the topic, ‘Preservation of Ozone Layer’. Various events were conducted and prizes were distributed to the winners. Dr. K.R. Malathi viewing the exhibition @ Oikos Voices and Seekers Club & Theatre Club Seeking knowledge through Arts The Tamil Department inaugurated Voices & Seekers Club & Theatre Club on 11th September 2013. Thiru. Ajayan Bala, Actor, Speaker & Writer emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities along with regular curriculum. A play, ‘Everlasting Friendship’ was enacted by the students with great gusto. A debate, ‘who is against the women’s progress?- The Family or The Society’ also was held. Knowledge Forum Empowering the Multi-tasking caliber The GSS Knowledge Forum was initiated on 13th September 2013 by DR. R. Ramamurthy, Chairman, Cyber Security & Privacy Foundation. In his inaugural address, Dr. R.Ramamurthy focused on the empowerment of women and enrichment of knowledge. Dr. Akila Sivaraman, Director(Retd.), All India Radio, Pondicherry insisted that ‘learning is a lifelong process’. The Forum also organized a special guest lecture on the topic “Desired Election Reforms for India of Gandhiji’s Dream” by Shri. N. Gopalaswami I.A. S (Retd) on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations on Oct 2nd 2013. Libfest Edifice of Knowledge Libfest was organized by the Dept. of Library on 16thseptember 2013. Dr. K.Kaliyaperumal, Dy. Librarian, University of Madras, inaugurated the Dr. K.Kaliyaperumal, University of Madras, Hon. Secy. & Principal watching the programme @ Library Fiesta Dictionary Day Improving Word Power The college celebrated Dictionary Day on 16th October 2013. The UG and PG libraries conducted interesting competitions like Finding out Meanings, Synonyms, etc. in which many students participated with enthusiasm. Zealitt Kaleidoscope of Imagination Shri. Bishwanath Ghosh, Dy. Editor, The Hindu, interacting with students @ Zealitt (also seen Hon. Secy. & Principal) Zealitt, an Inter-collegiate English Literary Fiesta,was organized by the Dept. of English on 17th September 2013. The programme was inaugurated by Shri. Bishwanath Ghosh, Dy. Editor, The Hindu who motivated the students to read more and initiate the skill of writing. The events churned out good response from the students of 15 city colleges. The on-stage and 9 Vol. 16 • January 2014 Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women off-stage events included Mindscape (painting), info power (quiz), literary pageant (role play), silhouettes (mime), etc. Voices & Seekers Clubs (English Department) Quest for Knowledge Voices & Seekers Clubs (English Department), the Debate and Quiz Clubs were inaugurated by Dr. Navin Jayakumar, Quiz Master, Landmark Quiz on 6th August 2013.He advised the members of the club to acquire knowledge from various sources like internet, good books and magazine etc. Cynosure Igniting Business Passion Cynosure, an Intra-Collegiate Commerce Fest was organized by the Dept. of Commerce Shift-II on 18th September 2013. Shri Padmasingh Isaac, Founder Chairman & Mg. Director, Aachi Group of Companies, inaugurated the function and enumerated the prerequisites to become a successful business man. Exciting events like Paper presentation, Mime, Fashion Show, Jewellery making with vegetables and word maze were organized in which students participated with gusto. poets and students recited their creations. All the poets and students were honoured. The GSS Hindi Theatre Club “Bhangima” was formally inaugurated on 8th August 2013 by Shri. Shashikant Banthia, Dramatist. The students presented a drama. Innova Innovation of Ideas Innova, an Intra-Collegiate Management Fest organized by the Dept. of Business Management Shift I on 21st September 2013. It was inaugurated by Shri. A.M. Visvanathan, Vice President & Business Head, Storage Solutions Group of Godrej & Boyce. He emphasized the need for practical learning and exposure for overall development of students. Various on stage and off stage events like Mime, Power point presentation, Best Manager, Clay Modeling, Dream your Cabin and Brain Squeezer were conducted. The overall trophy was bagged by BBA Department. A mimetic performance by Management students Youth Red Cross Unit & Blood Donation Camp High spirited Contribution Shri Padmasingh Isaac, Founder Chairman & Mg. Director, Aachi Group of Companies, motivating the students @ Cynosure Hindi Day Celebration Hindi Charisma The Dept. of Hindi organized a Kavi Sammelan on the occasion of Hindi Day on 14th September 2013. Dr. S.Basheer Ahmed, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., inaugurated the function. Many 10 Youth Red Cross Unit was inaugurated by Shri. V. Paras Jain, Member, Central Executive Committee, Indian Red Cross Society, New Delhi on 23rd September 2013. He enumerated the principles of YRC and asked the students to involve, inspire, encourage and initiate people in times of trouble and suffering to create a peaceful world. The inaugural was followed by a Blood Donation camp, organized by YRC in association with Indian Red Cross Blood Bank. Around 100 students donated blood. GSS Chronicle Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women A Seminar on ‘Energy Conservation’ Save Fuel, Conserve the Earth Blood Donation Camp organised by YRC First Aid Training Workshop Aiding the Affected A One Day Workshop was organised on “First Aid Training” by St John’s Ambulance Association on 14th September, 2013 to commemorate the World First Aid Day. Around 100 YRC members were trained in the workshop. Enviro Club A Seminar on ‘Energy Conservation’ was organized by GSS Enviro Club in association with the Department of Environment, Govt. of Tamil Nadu on 12th December 2013. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. H. Malleshappa, IFS, Director, Dept. of Environment, Govt. of Tamil Nadu . In his presentation, he said that common man can make significant contribution to Energy Conservation by following the policy ‘Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Refuse’. The club also organized an exhibition on “Energy conservation from Waste Products’ in which students presented their models. Gearing for the Clean World Hon. Secy. felicitating Dr. B.C. Archana Kalyani I.F.S., Dy. Director, Arignar Anna Zoological Park Enviro Club was inaugurated by Dr. B.C. Archana Kalyani I.F.S., Dy. Director, Arignar Anna Zoological Park, on 24th September 2013. She urged the students to protect the environment for the future generation. The students actively participated in the Rangoli competition. Numerous saplings were planted in places like St. Matthiah’s Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School, Doveton and Dayasadan, an orphanage, near Otteri by the members of GSS Enviro Club. World Habitat Day Dr. H. Malleshappa, IFS, Director, Dept. of Environment, Govt. of Tamilnadu inaugurating the exhibition @ A Seminar on ‘ Energy Conservation’ In the Technical Session I, Thiru. Pasupathiraj Kannan, Mg. Director, Klaro Ecotec Engineers & Consultants made a presentation on Waste Water Treatment. Dr. J. D. Marcus Knight, Senior Progamme Officer, Envis Centre, Dept. of Environment, Govt. of Tamil Nadu screened a short film on ‘Save Our Shoalas’. In the Technical Session II, Mr. Jitendar Kumar, Chief Consultant, Creative Solutions made a presentation on ‘ Saving Solar Power’. This was followed by an interactive session in which the students posed their queries to the guests. Healthy Habitation Citizen Consumer Club On the occasion of World Habitat Day, Ms. Navneeth Ragavan, Environment Consultant, addressed the students on ‘Solid Waste Management’ organized by Enviro Club. Consumer Awareness The Citizen Consumer Club was inaugurated by Thiru. R. Thiru. R. Mohandoss enumerated the rules to be followed while approaching the Consumer Forum for redress. The Industry Institute Interaction Cell was inaugurated by Shri. R.Shiva Kumar, Park Sheraton Hotel, on 27th September 2013. He encouraged the students to develop the leadership qualities and learn Corporate Skills apart from their academic studies. Health & Nutrition Forum Supplement for Healthy Life Health and Nutrition Forum was inaugurated by Dr. Balaji Ravilla Baskaran, CEO & Mg. Director, & Noble Hospitals on 25th September 2013. He emphasized the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle and practices from childhood. World Heart Day Beating in Rhythm On the occasion of World Heart Day, Dr. Kailash, Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, gave a special lecture on the topic ‘How to keep Heart Healthy’. World Food Day An Eye-Opener Dr. Evelyn Santhosh, Hope & Health Center conducted an awareness programme on ‘Harmful Effects on consuming Processed Food’. Industry Institution Interaction Cell Aspiring for Excellent Career Industrial visit to Hindustan Coca Cola Beverage Pvt. Ltd. Madras Week Celebration Matchless Metropolis The Student Council organized Madras Week Celebration on 26th September 2013. The function was presided over by Shri. Mohan. V. Raman, Actor & Management Trainer. He enumerated the history of the film industry and congratulated the South Film Fraternity for its Centenary Celebration. Students actively participated in the events like Collage, T-Shirt painting and Dance. GSS Centre for Women Empowerment Uplifting the Womanhood The GSS Unit of Centre For Women Empowerment organized a Women Empowerment Training Programme from 30th September to 4th October 2013. Dr. Muthusamy, Khadi & Village Commission, motivated the participants to take up the Entrepreneurship. Career Counseling programme by IIIC 12 During the five day programme, technical staff from Khadi Village Commission, demonstrated making of Candles, Soap oil, utensil cleaning powder, detergent powder, phenol and chalk piece. The club members also provided lots of information to the under privileged women folk in and around the college to earn their livelihood. They also distributed the day to day essentials like soaps, toothpastes, oils, toothbrushes etc., along with some eatables to the inmates. Breast Cancer Awareness Programme – NSS & Pink Warriors A Women Empowerment Training Programme Krav Maga - Israeli Self Defence Workshop To commemorate International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, GSS Centre for Women Empowerment organized a Israeli Self Defence Workshop 'Krav Maga' on 25th November 2013. Ms. Mrinalini Dhanesh Maher, Chairperson, Chennai Chapter of FICCI Ladies Organisation and Mr. Sriram, Head Instructor, Tamil Nadu Chapter of Krav Maga were the Guests. Mr.Sriram demonstrated techniques to defend oneself in case of emergency. Around 100 women students actively participated and gained benefit from the workshop. World Literacy Day Enlightening the Unlettered To commemorate the World Literacy Day, a team of NSS volunteers staff & visited Sathyavani Muthu Slum (SVM) near Otteri, Chennai, on 6th September 2013. The team motivated the less-privileged to understand the need for education and taught them to write their names and simple words. Preventing the Dread The NSS Unit jointly organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Programme with Pink Warriors Launch‘Chennai Turns Pink’ on 17.09 2013. Mr. Ananda Kumar, Founder, Chennai Turns Pink, warned the People to be cautious about symptoms of the early cancer and prevent it at the initial stage. Mrs. Aarthi Ganesh, Actress, Mrs.Sulabha, Radio One FM-RJ, Dr. Balaji, Global Health city and Ms.Thelca Co-ordinator, Global Health City also participated in the programme. Around 150 students attended the programme . World Peace Day Spreading Serenity To commemorate the World Peace Day, a team of NSS members visited the places like Central, Egmore and Paris on 20th September 2013 and distributed the pamphlets on brotherly love, unity and the world peace. NSS Day Celeberation The NSS unit of our college celebrated NSS Day on 24th September 2013. The competitions like oratorical, slogan and poetry writing were conducted as a part of the programme for the members Value Education Club Inculcating Values Spreading Literacy @ World Literacy Day The NSS students paid a visit to an orphanage, Udhavum Ullangal Illam, with 200 members at Adambakkam on The Value Education Club was inaugurated by Thiru. Around 150 members of Value Education Club were benefitted by the lecture. International Elders Day Caring for the Elders The Members of Value Education Club visited Home Happy Home, an Old age Home at Perambur, on 30th September 2013. Around 20 students and staff visited the home and interacted with Senior citizens. They also presented a cultural program. In a special lecture organized by Health & Nutrition Forum, Ms. Rama Murali, Founder, CARE Cubed gave tips on “Taking care of Elderly People”. Teen Stars Sports Tournament Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi honouring Smt. E. Gayathri, A Veena Exponent @ Nrithya Nrithya, an Intra-Collegiate Cultural Fiesta was organized by the Students Council on 17th October 2013. It was inaugurated by Kalamamani, Smt. E. Gayathri, A Veena Exponent who exhorted the students to grow spiritually. The programme provided a platform for the talented students to showcase their skills on the theme based events like Fashion Show, Group Singing, Group Dance, Comic Act, Pot Painting, Mehandi designing etc. Parent -Teacher Meet Involving the Stake-Holders The IQAC also organized Parent -Teacher Meet on 25th October 2013 and 26th October 2013. There was good response from the parents. The parents were updated with the details about their wards related to attendance, academic performance & discipline. Dr.U.Srinivas Raghavan, Professor, Strategic Management & Marketing, Loyola Institute of Business Administration was the Resource Person .The FDP focused on various issues like continuous updation of knowledge & technology, achieving excellence, holistic mentoring of students, etc. Around 60 faculty participated in the programme. A colourful March Past, marked the commencement of the Sports Day. It was followed by a number of demonstrations including Mass Drill, Aerobics, Yoga, Karate, Silambam and Drum Show by the students.
