Tmt. S. Gokula Indira, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Govt. of Tamilnadu inaugurated the celebrations. In her articulate address, She emphasised on domestic tourism and was of the Tmt. S. Gokula Indira, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, opinion that foreign tourists Govt. of Tamilnadu @ National Tourism Day are fascinated to the rich heritage and culture of Tamilnadu. Several on stage and off stage events were also conducted including Ethnic Waves, Virtual Trip, Art on the Floor, Cultural Bloom and Ethics Banner Designing. Students from all departments participated with full zest. N Free Medical Camps A Reason to Live Worshipful Mayor, Corporation of Chennai, Thiru. Saidai S. Duraiswamy @ SMJK’s Medical Project Padmashree Dr. Mayil Vahanam Natrajan, Vice-Chancellor, TN Dr.MGR Medical University @ the SMJK’s Medical Project s an another noble venture, our parent body Shree Mahaveer Jain Kalyan Sangh (SMJK) and the GSS College’s various clubs conducted a series of Medical Camps. Several Medical Camps were conducted viz, General, Eye, Dental, Cardiac, etc., in association with reputed hospitals in Chennai City, Fortis Malar Hospital, Apollo Hospitals, MV Hospitals for Diabetes, Sri Sankara Eye Hospital, Sankara Nethralaya, TN Govt Dental College & Hospital, Adyar A “Strong Convictions precede great actions” ifficult situations, tough times,challenging circumstances and rough patches are a part and parcel of life, that strike all of us once in a while. Adversity are meant to bring the best or worst out of you. Here, Attitude is something that makes a difference and plays a crucial role in deciding the outcome of whole scenario. Have a firm belief within yourself that there is no problem without a solution and it is the test of our determination and courage to stand against all odds and make things better. Until you go through a bad phase, you will never realize the importance of happiness. Hope is a pleasant and simplest gift to all of us. It shuns out the negativity and shows the brighter perspective towards life. So, give your best shot and the rest God will take care. Achieve Excellence A total of 1190 persons were screened and checked for various ailments during the various camps. The medical camps offered real good service to the poor and needy public. The camp was inaugurated by the worshipful Mayor of Chennai Corporation, Thiru. Saidai S. Duraiswamy. Padmashree Dr. Mayil Vahanam Natrajan, Vice - Chancellor, TN Dr. MGR Medical University, participated. nowledge forum was inaugurated on 15th Oct.2011 by Shri. N. Murali, Director, The Hindu. He exhorted the students to pursue knowledge with great desire and to excel in life. Around 300 forum members attented the inauguration. Karishma he Dept. of Hindi organized Karishma, an Inter-Collegiate literary fest on 18th Jan.2012. Shri. Sanjay Arora, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Chennai, was the guest. In his address, he urged the youth community to create a strong society based on values. The events for the day included poetry writing, folk dance and debate. Around 10 colleges participated. Murali, Director, The Hindu @ GSS Knowledge Forum he GSS Entrepreneurial Development Cell (Entrepreneurship Development & Promotion Cell) was inaugurated by Dr. T.S. Sridhar, IAS, Principal Secretary to Govt., Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Dept., Govt. of Tamilnadu on 23rd August, 2011. Dr.T.S. Sridhar in his speech, laid emphasis on the schemes and subsidies offered by T Dr. T.S. Sridhar, IAS, Principal Secretary To Govt., Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Dept., Govt. of Tamilnadu @ ED Cell the State Govt. for Women Entrepreneurs. Around 250 students attended the programme. The GSS Entrepreneurship Development Cell, in association with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) organized an orientation programme on 20th July, 2011. The cell highlighted the success stories of well known Entrepreneurs and future perspectives. The students were briefed on the importance of ED Cell. A video on e-week celebration was played which inspired the students to a great extent. Around 100 students attended the orientation programme. Blessing Ceremony inaugurated by Shri. V. Ramgopal, Executive Director, Indian Bank, Chennai. Exotic Inception In his address, Shri. V. Ramgopal, said that commerce and Entrepreneurship are very significant features of any economy. He emphasized the fact of India being in the frontline of development. Several on-stage and off-stage events such as Biz talk, Adzap, Cartooning and Layout Designing were held throughout the day. Students from fifteen colleges participated in the daylong event. The Rolling Shield was bagged by M.O.P Vaishnav College. he 16th of June 2011 heralded a new beginning for the first year students of our College with a blessing function. An aura of holiness was lent to the atmosphere with the divine presence of Shree Ajaysagarji Maharaj and Shree Aravindsagarji Maharaj. Dr. V. Vijayakumar, Vice-Chancellor, Tamilnadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, participated and blessed the students. Our Hon. Secretary, Shri. Gautam Vaid and the Principal, Dr. M.K. Malathi, motivated the first year students and welcomed the freshers . T Over 600 first year students who embarked on their academic journey on this auspicious day were welcomed with sweets and flowers by the senior students. Ramgopal, Executive Director, Indian Bank, @ Comfest omfest 2011, an Inter-Collegiate Commerce Festival was organized on 10th August, 2011. The fest was C Shri. Nirmal Joshi, IPS, Dy. Commissioner of Police, Traffic Flagged off the awareness Rally at Marina Beach Corporation on 2nd January, 2012. He emphasized on various safety measures to be taken by people in their routine life. Shri. Nirmal Joshi, IPS, DGP, Traffic (North) flagged off the awareness rally on 4th January 2012 at the Marina Beach. Students of GSS participated in the rally enthusiastically and tried to spread awareness among the general public to be alert. As a part of Road Safety Week Fourth day activity, a special lecture on “Road Safety is Life Safety” was organized on 5th January, 2012. Mr. S. Sivanandam, Dy. Commissioner of Police-Traffic (Planning) addressed the students on the importance of following the traffic rules. GSS Chronicle Comfest 3 Vol. 14 • January 2012 Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women 7-Day NSS CAMP Serving a Cause he 7-ay NSS Camp for Tsunami Victims and Slum Dwellers, at Tondiarpet, was inaugurated by Ms. C.R. Saraswathy, Chair Person, Social Welfare Board, Govt. of Tamilnadu on 7th Dec. 2011. She emphasized on the importance of selfless deeds in one’s life. Several programmes held during 7 day camp included Field visit, Tree Plantation, Cancer awareness T Dr. V. Kanagasabai, Dean, Madras Medical College @ Health & Nutrition Forum Muthamizh Vizha Celebration of Trinity of Tamil Language Thiru P. Vetri Vel, Member of Legislative Assembly, RK Nagar Constituency with the beneficiary of the NSS Camp GSS Chronicle programme, Session on Yoga & Meditation, Selfdefence training for women and Dental and Eye checkup. Several competitions like Rangoli, Musical chair and Drawing were also conducted with enthusiastic participation from women and children of Tondiarpet. The Valedictory function was presided over by Thiru. P. Vetri Vel, Member of Legislative Assembly, R.K.Nagar Constituency. He gave away the prizes to the winners of various events conducted during the week. Dr. Raja Hussain, NSS Coordinator, University of Madras participated. Around 1100 persons were benefited out of the week long camp. 4 Health and Nutrition Forum Stay Healthy he Health and Nutrition Forum was inaugurated by Dr. V. Kanagasabai, Dean, Madras Medical College on 23rd Sept. 2011. In his address, he emphasized on certain health related issues regarding cancer, diabetes and low calorie foods. Around 250 sudents attended the function and were benefited. T Thiru. Ezhil Arasu, Director, Tamil Development Dept, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, being felicitated by Hon. Secy. Shri Gautam Vaid @ Muthamizh Vizha (Also seen the Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi & Lyricist Mr. Snehan) he Dept. of Languages (Tamil) organized Muthamizh Vizha, an Inter-Collegiate Fest on nd 22 Sept. 2011. Thiru. Ezhil Arasu, Director, Tamil Development Department, Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Poet Mr. Snehan participated in the fest. In his address, he appealed to the young women not to ruin their talent and creativity under social pressure. With great enthusiasm students from 30 city colleges participated in events like Oratorical contest, mono-acting, dance, drama, etc. T Investiture Ceremony Endowed with Vigour he Investiture Ceremony - the installation of the Student’s Council for the year 2011-2012 was held on 25th June, 2011. Shri. Vijay Menon, T Emeritus Motivational Trainer on Transformational Leadership, installed the new council. The Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi administered the oath to the newly elected council members. The Hon. Secretary Shri. Gautam Vaid counseled the Office Bearers to lead their team to success. The ceremonial lamps were lit by the new members to mark the occasion. Shri. Vijay Menon emphasized the significance of culture and tradition, Moral character and being true to one’s inner self. J. Sheetal of III B.Com ‘A’, the President of the Student’s Council, in her address assured a committed leadership. The vote of thanks was proposed by R. Divya of II B.Sc, the General Secretary of the Council. Innova Administer Devour nnova 2011, an Intra-Collegiate Management Festival was organized by the Dept. of Management Studies on 29th July, 2011. It was inaugurated by Revd. (Dr.) N. Casimir Raj, Founder Director, LIBA. He spoke on the innovation and speed. He also advised the youngsters to come up with innovative practices even if they do not belong to technical field. The Dept. of Management Sciences, BBA (Day) won the overall shield. 5 Vol. 14 • January 2012 Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women by Dr. Nagesh R. Iyer, Director, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR). Dr. Nagesh R. Iyer emphasized on mathematical principles as the foundation of many technologies like global reconnaissance, aerodynamics, earthquake prediction, etc. There were several On-stage and Off-stage events, which included Pomptics, Brain Bashers, Numerowalk, Math ‘O’ Jewel and Setpix. In an overwhelming response, around 30 city colleges participated in the fiesta with great enthusiasm and zeal. The Rolling Shield was bagged by Women’s Christian College. Talentia Opulent Display he Dept. of Commerce (Day) organized Talentia 2011, an Intra-Collegiate Commerce Festival on 1st August, 2011. Shri. V.M. Lakshminarayanan, Chairman & Mg. Director, Butterfly Group of Companies & Founder Chairman, Indo-Russian Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Chennai was the guest. He highlighted power of commerce & industry which makes a small country to become a global player. He also exhorted the students to contribute to the development of our country’s commerce as women are endowed with inherent managerial skills and business acumen. T A number of on-stage and off-stage events like Adbizlite, Business Talk, Blooming Business and Magictoons were conducted. The students from all disciplines participated in the various events. The Dept. of Corporate Secretaryship bagged the maximum number of prizes and clinched the shield. GSS Chronicle Cyber 6 Coincer to Cyber World yber 2011, an Intra-Collegiate Computer/IT Fest was organized on 18th August, 2011 by the Dept. of Computer Science. Mr. K. Govindarajan, Senior President, Polaris Software Lab, Chennai was the guest. He advised the students to utilize their energy and time to develop multiple skills and talents. Several On-stage and Off-stage including Smarkers, Quiz, Talk Zone and Slide C Blends were conducted. The Dept. of Computer Science Applications & IT won the maximum number of prizes and won the overall shield. Independence Day Value your Freedom he 65th Independence Day was celebrated with customary enthusiasm & zeal on 15th August’11. Our Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi hoisted the National Flag. In her Independence Day Address, the Principal, highlighted the role of present day youth in building a new world order amidst incredible ironies and a paragon of paradoxes. This was followed by a cultural programme which included speeches, dance and songs invoking the Infusing Nationalistic Fervour @ patriotism of the Independence Day country. T Republic Day Proud to be an Indian .S.S Jain College For Women was one among the TOP THREE colleges in the city to perform cultural dance during the 63rd REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS at Marina Beach in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister and His Excellency the Governor of Tamilnadu on 26th January 2012. Our College dance Performance received huge round of applauses from the cheering audiences at the Marina Beach. G Cynosure Articulate Vision Markers, Tech & Non Tech, Hodge Podge, Bug Net and Mode Build. Around 18 city colleges participated with enthusiasm. The Valedictory was presided over by Dr. Chandrasekar Dharuman, Founder & CEO, Sri Sesha Technologies Pvt. Ltd. He spoke about the IT industries and job opportunities in this sector. Director of EID Parry (India) Limited @ Cynosure he Department of Commerce (Shift II) organized Cynosure 2011, An Intra-collegiate Commerce festival on 15th Sept. 2011. Shri. Ravindra Singhvi, Managing Director of EID Parry (India) Limited, A Murugappa company, Chennai was the guest. In his inspiring address, Shri Singhvi gave anecdotes of great achievers and urged the students to pursue high aspirations and develop indelible commitment in life. He also applauded college management in following the three tenets of maintenance of peace, spread of commerce and diffusion of education which are pre-requisites for the development of any country. This was followed by several events which included Mimer, Remisia Paper, Dilato and Corpus Ingredior. Students of all disciplines participated with great enthusiasm. Ms. Rakhi of III Bcom (Eve) was crowned with Miss Cynosure 2011 title. T Shining IT World he Department of Computer Science organized an Inter- Collegiate Computer/ IT fest, ‘Brain Byte’ on 12th January 2012. Shri. Makesh Kannaiyan, Asst. Vice President, Head ERP Technology & Operations, Sonata Software, Bangalore, participated in the event. In his address, he emphasized on the significance of Communication skills as an asset to one’s personality. It was followed by an interactive session. Various on stage and off stage events were held, which included Smart T aryushan Parva was celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm on 24th August 2011. Our Hon. Secy. Shri Gautam Vaid and the Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi spoke on the auspicious occasion. In his reverential address, Hon.Secy. Shri.Gautam Vaid highlighted on the significance of Value-based education inculcating goodness in Human beings. He also emphasized that man being an extra-ordinary creation of God should contemplate on the purpose of his life through self-introspection and self-realization and rectify the trespasses. It was followed by a devotional programme Bhajans by the students. P Thiru Onam Floriated he students’ council celebrated ThiruOnam on 9th sept. 2011. Ms. Rajini, Actor and Mr. Mani, Dancer, participated in the celebrations. Numerous on stage and off stage events like Malyalam Linguistic wear and Hues Rangoli were held. Around 600 students attended and enjoyed the occasion. The eventful day drew to a close with a Valediction, decked by the renowned actress and Classical dancer Tmt. Bhanu Priya, who applauded the students for their energetic performances. She also gave away the prizes to the winners. Around 600 students took part in the programme. Christmas Joy Showers of Blessing Fresher’s Talent Show @ Srujan rujan 2011 – the Fresher’s Talent Show was organized to display the latent talent of the first year students. Mr. Bharat Sundar, Carnatic Singer and Mr. Sudhakar, Artistic Director participated in the event. S Christmas Carols by GSS Faculty A number of events were staged by the promising young students of first years which included dances, songs and style acts, whose talents were on Display. Ms. Pratiksha of I B.Com ‘A’ was crowned as “Ms. Srujan 2011title. There were performances by senior students also. Around 800 students attended the talent show. anta Claus entered college premises on 17th December ringing the bells of X’mas all over. Mr. Vijay Ebenezer, renowned Music Director participated in the event. Christmas carols were sung and students participated in various X-mas related events. S Navarasa Nritya Pongal Celebration Rocking & Dazzling Harvesting Fervour M e g a - I n t r a Collegiate Cultural Bonanza, Navarasa Nritya 2011 was organized in college premises on 7th Oct. 2011. Kalaimamani Tmt. Vani Jayaram, Veteran Kalaimamani Tmt. Vani Playback Singer of all times Jayaram, Veteran Playback was the guest. She mesmerized Singer @ Navarasa Nritya the audience with her melodious voice. Numerous on stage and off–stage events were also held which included,” Group singing”, “Fashion show”, “Group dance”, ”Tattoo designing” and “Vegetable GSS Chronicle A 8 Pongal Celebrations @ GSS Campus ongal, the rich and traditional festival of tamilians was celebrated in the college premises on 13th P Exponer Head Honcho he Department of Management (Shift II) organized Exponer 2011, An Intra-Collegiate fiesta on th 16 Sept. 2011. Shri. Raghupathy Viswanathan, Vice President, HR, International flavours and fragrances India Pvt. Ltd, took part in the event. He advised the students to realize their inner strength and take right decision in their lives. A number of on stage and off stage events were conducted, which included, Street play, New product Designing, Show off, Logo Designing, Face painting, etc. T Zealitt Discover Yourself he Department of Languages (English) organized Zealitt 2011, an Inter-Collegiate Literary Fest on th 19 Dec. 2011. It was inaugurated by Shri. D. Murali, The Dy Editor, Business Line, The Hindu. In his address, he emphasized on the diversity of English Language and its contribution in the growth of IT sector. Several on stage and off stage events were conducted which included Rendevouz, Script a tale, Calliope and Mime. Students from around 15 colleges participated in the day-long event. T Shri. D. Murali, Dy Editor, Business Line, The Hindu @ Zealitt Max-Mela A Brainy Affair he Dept. of Mathematics organized “MaxMela 2012” – An Intra-Collegiate Math Fest on 5th January, 2012. Prof. Dr. V. Thangaraj, Ramanujan Institute of Advanced Study in Mathematics, University of Madras, Chennai, participated in the event. He addressed the students on the significance of Mathematics and also its role in the day to day lives. He appreciated the fest as being the platform to exhibit their talents. The events conducted were Treasure Hunt, Model Making, Soap Carving and Crossword Puzzles. Students from various departments participated in the events with zest and enthusiasm. T GSS Rotaract Club SS Rotaract Club was inaugurated on 30th sept. 2011 by Rtn. Nandita Krishnan, President, Rotary Club of Madras. She highlighted on the importance of network consisting of Rotary International. Several service oriented events were organised. G Citizen Consumer Club Be Vigilant he GSS Citizen consumer club initiated its activities for academic year 2011-12 with the inauguration by Thiru. S. Mohammad Akbar, Dy Commissioner, Civil supplies and Consumer Protection Dept., Govt. of Tamilnadu on 28th Sept.2011. In his address, Thiru. Akbar, urged consumers to be well aware of their rights T Mr. R. Desikan, Founder Trustee, Consumer Association (CAI) speaking @ National Consumer Day GSS Chronicle January 2012. The Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi presided over the celebrations along with the students with zest and joy. The traditional dress code added flavour to the Tamilar Thirunal. Uphold Asteroid – Economics Forum Beyond Books Globalized Economy T Highlighting Economy special programme was organized by EFBB on 6th Sept. 2011. Prof. Adv. Jayaprakash B. Somani, Advisor for Foreign Trade Policy, Govt. of India and Chairman of Nishant Publication Pvt. Ltd. participated in the occasion. Prof. Somani in his presentation on “Opportunities in Global or Foreign Trade” highlighted the significance of free trade, import-export knowledge and role of buyers and suppliers. It was followed by an interactive session where EFBB members posed their queries . A Shri. T.S. Srinivasamurthy, Director, Dept. of Environment & Forests, Govt. of Tamil Nadu @ the Seminar jointly organised with GSS Enviro Club. n association with the Department of Environment, Govt. of Tamilnadu, the GSS Enviro Club organized a seminar on “Bio-Diversity and Natural Medicine” on 16th Dec. 2011. Shri. T.S. Srinivasamurthy, IFS, Director, Dept. of Environment, Govt. of Tamilnadu inaugurated the proceedings. Several eminent guests participated and presented papers on Waste water treatment, Mushroom Cultivation, Bio-Diversity and Cilmate Change and the importance of different medicinal and its usage. The seminar drew to a close with a film show on“ Save Our Sholas” showcased by Mr. Ramnath Chandrasekar, CoFounder, Youth for Conservation. Around 250 Enviro club members attended and were benefitted by the seminar. I EFBB also conducted a Guest lecture on the topic “Freebies: Cost Benefit Analysis” on 19th Dec. 2011. Shri. C.P. Panel Discussion on “Foreign Direct Investment in Retail ”(FDI) GSS Chronicle Voices and Seekers 10 Edificing Oneself W ith a perspective to enrich communication skill and enhance all-round development of personality of the students, Voices and Seekers, The ‘ Debate & Quiz club of GSS ’ conducts many programmes. The club was inaugurated by Shri. S.V. Ashwin Kumar, Quiz Master, Quiz Foundation of India, on 29th Sept. 2011. Around 150 students benefited from this programme. Panel Discussion on FDI in Retail s a part of EFBB Activity, a symposium was conducted on 15th Dec. 2011. Dr. K. Venkataraman. I.A.S.(Retd), Chairman, Public Expenditure Round A Table Trust gave introductory remarks and initiated the discussions. The Panelists were Mr. C.P. YRC UNIT Being Human The YRC unit initiated its activities on 12th Sept. 2011. Prof. A. Kader Basha, Honorary Advisor, Youth Red Cross, Tamil Nadu State Branch, participated in the event . In his address, Prof. Basha spoke on humanity, motivation and social issues to create awareness among today’s youth. Around 200 members of YRC attended the event. In his motivational address, he highlighted the abilities and qualities that an employer expects in a prospective employee and the role played by the teachers and colleges in moulding the personality of the students. He urged the students to enhance their language fluency. Around 250 final year students attended and benefited . Industrial Visit Enriching Personality he GSS ISTD cell was inaugurated on 7th Sept. 2011 by Shri. Naresh Kumar, Chairman, ISTD - Chennai Chapter & Director, Vestas Wind Technology Pvt. Ltd. T He enlightened the students on the role of ISTD cell in imparting life skill to students. Several other programmes pertaining to industry-employability were also organised by the cell. cholars, experts and reputed academicians were invited by all the departments, who apportioned their expertise cognition with the students.
