The Tar Heel Van NCUC Announces Rate Increase The North Carolina Utilities Commission announced the annual rate increase for the Maximum Rate Tariff effective January 1, 2012. This year’s increase is 2.4%, across the board. Docket T-100, Sub 49, which created the Maximum Rate Tariff, provides for an increase each year on January 1. The increase is based on figures from the Implicit Price Deflator of the Gross Domestic Product for the Southeast region. All line items are included in the rate increase, excluding valuation. The revised tariff pages containing the January 1 increase are now available. This link also includes the revised roster pages that were issued at the same time. The two software companies—Custom Computer Software and IGC Software—affiliated with NC Movers Association that have NC Electronic tariffs have been notified of the increase. They are both working on their updates. If you have paid your annual updates, you should have your Custom Computer Software update by January 2. If you are interested in having either computer version, contact the Association office and we’ll tell you how! The Tar Heel Van Page 3 From the President President Dean Barrett Greetings! I hope everyone has enjoyed their Holiday Season. Another year gone, and again it goes by so fast! I tell people all the time how it seems like it goes by faster in our industry because we're always talking days and months out to perform our services. Your NCMA Board was able to accomplish a lot during the past year. Legislation was passed to help eliminate illegals from our industry, communication has continued to improve with the Utilities Commission, and a very strong board continues to get better. Your Board will continue to strive for success for 2012. Every year seems to go by a little faster and guess what, we're another year older! Good news-we're another year older, bad news-we're another year older! This is why we should all cherish our accomplishments for the past year and spend time with our families and coworkers over the Holidays. Also, we can recharge for the upcoming year and make it better than the last. I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season and let's all have a great 2012! The First Sergeant’s Council organized the Thanksgiving food drive with help from Butterball Turkey, local companies and Airmen on the base. (US Air Force Photo by Senior Airman Whitney Stanfield) Charlotte Van and Storage received a request from to perform a charity move from Dawn Looper. Ms. Looper requested assistance from Mayflower and they forwarded the requested to Charlotte Van, because it was an intrastate move. Ms. Looper has become disabled, but she was a military wife who had been moved by Mayflower several times and asked them to help her. Charlotte Van donated the truck and their employees donated their time to help Ms. Looper out. Frank Watson IV said “When we asked our staff to participate, we did not have one person say no or that they would have to think about it. By calling 10 staff members, we had 10 confirmed to help with the move. We are so lucky to have the staff we do. What we found is that you will get more out of something like this than you put into it…as a company and as a staff member.” City Transfer and Storage of High Point has donated the use of a trailer for the NC Special Olympics for several years. Here’s some of this year’s participants! The Tar Heel Van Page 7 Hilldrup donates moving expertise to The Green Chair Project Stafford, VA (December 19, 2011) – Hilldrup Moving and Storage Services recently completed one of the largest charitable moves in the 108-year-old company’s history. Over a four day period, it moved approximately 175,000 pounds of household items to the new showroom and warehouse of The Green Chair Project in Raleigh. Established in 2010, The Green Chair Project is a donation receptacle for gently-used household goods for those in need in Raleigh-Durham and the North Carolina Coast. It has grown from a church closet to its current facility in response to community generosity and need. Their recent move to a new 14,000 square foot facility at 1853 Capital Blvd., involved at least 14 truckloads of furniture and 40 pallets of household goods. The items moved included everything from decorative accessories to entertainment centers. “At first we thought we could handle the move with volunteers. If Hilldrup Moving & Storage Services hadn’t stepped forward and donated their trucks and personnel, I don’t know how we could have handled the volume of goods to be moved,” said Beth Smoot, co-founder of the non-profit organization. “Every Hilldrup worker was so respectful and interested in how we’re trying to help people,” Smoot said. “They were so well trained. They helped with everything from the pre-move to positioning the furniture and accessories in our new location.” “The Green Chair Project’s mission of helping families put their homes back together during difficult circumstances fits well within the Hilldrup commitment to community service.” said Joe Coffman, General Manager of Hilldrup’s Raleigh-Durham branch. Page 8 The Tar Heel Van Matt and Rachel Sharpstene of A Few Good Men Moving and Storage of Wake Forest are extremely pleased to introduce everyone to their daughter, Sophia Elizabeth. Sophia was a little early, being born on November 22 (and due on New Year’s Eve). However, she came through with flying colors and is already home with her excited parents. She can’t wait to attend her first NCMA Convention this fall! Horne Moving Systems of Goldsboro had the honor recently to move NCSU Chancellor Randy Woodson and his wife, Susan, to their new residence (fondly called the Big Red House) located on the Centennial Campus. Horne moved the Chancellor from Indiana to North Carolina at the time of his hire in April 2010. Chancellor Woodson was so impressed with that move, he made sure that Horne was contracted for the move to the new residence. Horne sent 6 men and 1 supervisor to pack for 2 days, 4 men and a supervisor to load in one day and 4 men with a supervisor to unload in one day. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway. Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.
