It always seems to be a double-edged sword. We plan for months in advance to gear up for the unexpected, we crank as hard as we can for 3-4 months, then we get to enjoy some peace and quiet...so we think. Fall is a time for reflecting on the summer to figure out what we can do to better in our business relationships with our vendors, customers and employees to make the next year even better. Fall is a time for sharpening that sword to constantly improve these relationships. The convention committee and Pam are working their tails off to make this year's meeting a top-notch event to help us all improve those relationships, as well. It's an exciting year as we celebrate 60 years as an Association. Carolina Beach will be a great site for us to get together to share the knowledge that some of the veterans have in the moving world and it will also give us a chance to meet some new faces for a fresh look at our industry. Make it a great fall and keep moving ahead! I look forward to seeing everyone in Carolina Beach in October. The Tar Heel Van Page 9 Why Successful People Never Bring Smart Phones Into Meetings by Kevin Kruse and Dr. Travis Bradberry You are annoying your boss and colleagues any time you take your phone out during meetings, says new research from USC's Marshall School of Business, and if you work with women and people over forty they're even more perturbed by it than everyone else. The researchers conducted a nationwide survey of 554 full-time working professionals earning above $30K and working in companies with at least 50 employees. They asked a variety of questions about smartphone use during meetings and found: 86% think it’s inappropriate to answer phone calls during meetings 84% think it’s inappropriate to write texts or emails during meetings 66% think it’s inappropriate to write texts or emails even during lunches offsite The more money people make the less they approve of smartphone use. The study also found that Millennials are three times more likely than those over 40 to think that smartphone use during meetings is okay, which is ironic considering Millennials are highly dependent upon the opinions of their older colleagues for career advancement. TalentSmart has tested the emotional intelligence of more than a million people worldwide and found that Millennials have the lowest self-awareness in the workplace, making them unlikely to see that their smartphone use in meetings is harming their careers. Why do so many people—especially successful people—find smartphone use in meetings to be inappropriate? When you take out your phone it shows a: Lack of respect. You consider the information on your phone to be more important than the conversation at hand, and you view people outside of the meeting to be more important than those sitting right in front of you. Lack of attention. You are unable to stay focused on one thing at a time. Lack of listening. You aren’t practicing active listening, so no one around you feels heard. Lack of power. You are like a modern-day Pavlovian dog who responds to the whims of others through the buzz of your phone. Lack of self-awareness: You don't understand how ridiculous your behavior looks to other people. Lack of social awareness: You don't understand how your behavior affects those around you. I can't say I'm surprised by the USC study's findings. My company coaches leadersusing 360° assessments that compare their self-perception to how everyone else sees (Continued on page 10) The Tar Heel Van Page 10 (Continued from page 9) them. Smartphone use in meetings is one of the most common coworker complaints. It’s important to be clear with what you expect of others. If sharing this article with your team doesn't end smartphone use in meetings, take a page out of the Old West and put a basket by the conference room door with an image of a smart phone and the message, "Leave your guns at the door." It’s important that companies conduct these checks to protect the employee and the employer against potential dangers and liability – especially when they deal with the public and enter into private homes. Movers must not only transport property from Point A to Point B safely, but also maintain a level of professionalism behind their work. And yet there are still some moving companies that don’t conduct criminal background checks on their employees either because they don’t know how to do such a check, don’t want to pay the fees involved or are just simply negligent when it comes to this important issue. They just take it for granted that nothing bad can happen. But it can and it has. This unfortunate but true story took place in Texas. It was moving day and the family was prepared to go, but when the movers showed up, they discovered that they were short two workers. The foreman, in a quick attempt to resolve this problem, immediately jumped on craigslist and found a mover he hired for the day. The move happened as scheduled and everything seemed fine. Then six months later a lawsuit was filed against the moving company. It turns out the teenage daughter of the homeowner claimed she was sexually assaulted on the day of the move in her own home. It was further revealed that the mover they hired that day had recently been released from prison serving time for sexual assault! The moving company closed down their Texas operation because of the litigation and the bad reputation that stemmed from negligent hiring and negligent supervision. Not only was no criminal background check conducted on the temporary worker, but the foreman failed to provide adequate supervision during the move. This moving company will never recuperate from this incident because of the liability issues, the damage to their reputation that caused the business to shut down, and just living with the consequences of this terrible situation. Perhaps the most disheartening aspect of this story is the fact that all of this could have been prevented had the company played its role in protecting the public by conducting a criminal background check on its employees. Do not take other peoples’ safety for granted. As a mover, you have an obligation to your customer to not only get the job done and get it done accurately, but to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and conduct. Part of that means hiring the right people for the job. Don’t let another incident like the one described above happen to your company. It’s hard if not impossible to ever regain a tarnished reputation. But for some families, buying school supplies on an already tight budget is just not possible and many students arrive at school with nothing. This is where a little warehouse on Wilkinson Boulevard in Charlotte comes into play. Classroom Central is a non-profit organization that equips students living in poverty to effectively learn by collecting and distributing free school supplies. Over 100,000 students in poverty in more than 200 schools in six school districts are served every year. As one can imagine, it takes some manpower to move all of that around! TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Charlotte have been involved with Classroom Central for more than seven years now with their Backpacks & Basics program. This series outfits the highest poverty schools in the region with supply kits and backpacks for their entire student body. With the generous donations and fundraising efforts from area businesses, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and Classroom Central have been able to deliver over 4,700 supply kits filled with notebooks, pencils, rulers and more to eight elementary schools this year.
