FILM
LADWP AT THE MOVIES
THOR, a powerful
but arrogant warrior, is
sent down to Earth as
punishment for reigniting
a reckless war. But after a
dangerous villain from his
world sends the darkest
forces of Asgard to invade
Earth, the hammerwielding Thor will learn
what it takes to be a true
hero in order to save
mankind.
I will admit, I stole that
synopsis of the movie
THOR from Yahoo
Movies. They did a good job encapsulating the basic plot of the
film and I was being lazy. Sue me. Wait, no you can’t…I cited
my source.
Anyway, now that you get the gist of the film, and most of you
have probably already seen it, I must say, it was action packed,
and a super hero movie to boot, and I friggin’ love super hero
movies…I was unimpressed.
Chris Hensworth was a great choice to play THOR and
you cannot go wrong casting Anthony Hopkins in anything;
he played Thor’s father Odin. Even Idris Elba, who I did
not expect to see in this film, did an excellent job. Natalie
Portman….eh, I guess. They could have made a better choice,
but she’ll have to do. All that said, my gripe with the film is
not the acting, it’s the story! Where is the depth? Lately, these
super hero films, with the exception of the Batman franchise,
have been very superficial. Most viewers can tell what’s going
to happen minutes into the film. The hero is a jerk in the
beginning, he has an awakening and then becomes great. Oh
yeah, throw in a girl, and a best friend, add water and stir.
This leads me to my next film…The Green Lantern.
The Green Lantern Corps is a brotherhood of warriors sworn
to keep intergalactic order. Each Green Lantern wears a ring
that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called
Parallax threatens to destroy the universe, the fate of the world
lies in the hands of their newest recruit, a gifted and cocky test
pilot, named Hal Jordan.

I must say, I walked into the theater skeptical about this one.
I’d seen trailers months before and Ryan Reynolds, The Green
Lantern, seemed a little too “Jack Tripper” to me. (You have to
admit he kind of reminds you of the late John Ritter, right?)
He seemed like he was joking around too much and The Green
Lantern is a serious guy. He does not joke like that. But in
spite of my skepticism I sat down in my seat and tossed in my
first fistful of popcorn to take it in.
And once again, I
watched a visually great,
action packed film that
lacked depth. As per
the norm, our hero
goes from arrogant and
reckless, to responsible
and humble, then he
becomes great. Marvel
(THOR) and DC
(Green Lantern) are
cranking these films out
on an assembly line!
It’s the same story with
a different hero. I can’t
be too mad at them. It
sells. They know we love
superheroes. They know
we love to see the bad
guy get his. And they know they are guaranteed to make a ton
of money. Who can blame them? I just wish they’d go a little
deeper. Marvel did it once by adding the terrorism angle to
the first Iron Man, and DC has done it twice with the Batman
franchise. I’d advise them to stay on that path and not veer
from it.
Back to the Lantern. Whoever designed the villains in
this film should never work in Hollywood again. If you saw
Mars Attacks and remember how cheesy and campy the
Martians looked, then you’ve seen the villains, as well as, “The
Guardians”. The appearance of those characters was sad,
outdated and juvenile at best.
I’m giving both THOR and The Green Lantern a solid 3 dials.
Decent work, Marvel and DC…you can do better!

Say buh-bye to those little plastic bags. With just a few snips,
you can create a set of cool, eco-friendly, reusable snack and
sandwich containers from juice cartons and milk jugs. They’re
food-safe, easy to rinse clean, and absolutely free, so it’s no
biggie if they get tossed accidentally. Let your kids decorate the
boxes with stickers and permanent markers for an even more
personalized look.

to a quart

INSTRUCTIONS
1. SANDWICH BOX: Mark a clean 1-gallon
milk jug as shown.
2. Cut along the lines with scissors. To make the
crease lines, use a thumbtack to pierce a row of
dots at 1/4-inch intervals across each side of
the jug, 1 3/4 inches up from the bottom.
3. Fold the flaps at these dotted lines, then open
them and fold them in the opposite direction
along the lines (this will make the flaps easier
for your kids to open and close). Fold up the
box and add an adhesive-backed Velcro dot
closure.
4. SNACK BOX: Use a clean juice or milk
carton. Cut off the top, then cut the sides into
flaps as shown. Carefully crease the flaps, then
fold them down and add an adhesive-backed
Velcro dot closure.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Measure the back of your cookie sheet and cut a piece
of shelf liner that’s an inch wider and an inch taller.
Stick the shelf liner to the back of the cookie sheet by
peeling off one corner of the liner and laying it down
on a corner of the cookie sheet. Slowly pull the backing
away as you smooth the liner onto the sheet. Cut off the
excess shelf liner.
2. To make a hole for hanging, place the cookie sheet over
a piece of scrap wood and use a hammer to punch a nail
through the center of the rim.
3. For the pencil holder, cut a piece of shelf liner that’s
about an inch taller than the can. Wrap the liner around
the can so that the ends overlap a bit, then cut off the
excess liner. Glue two magnets to the side of the can.
4. For the bottle-cap magnets, glue a magnet inside of
each cap. Cut a piece of card stock to fit the cap, write a
name on it, and glue it on top of the magnet.

MAPLE-ROASTED
SWEET POTATOES
Only a small bit of oil and maple syrup are needed to coat
these thick wedges of potatoes. Roasting them at a high
temperature browns them well and deepens the flavors. A fresh
sprinkle of lemon zest adds flavor without fat.
INGREDIENTS
2 pounds small sweet potatoes (about 5), peeled and cut
lengthwise into 1-inch wedges
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
Sea salt and freshly grated nutmeg, to taste, for serving
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Toss the sweet
potatoes on a large, foil-lined rimmed baking sheet with
the oil; season, to taste, with salt and pepper. Roast the
potatoes for 20 minutes.
Remove the pan from the oven and toss the potatoes
with the syrup.
Back in the oven, roast, tossing twice, until the potatoes
are beginning to brown and are tender, about 15
minutes more. To serve, sprinkle warm potatoes with
freshly grated lemon zest, sea salt, and nutmeg to taste.

DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Pulse the graham crackers
in a food processor until crumbled. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons
water and the butter; pulse until moistened. Wrap the outside
of a 9-inch springform pan with foil to prevent leaks. Coat
the inside of the pan with cooking spray and press the crumbs
onto the bottom. Bake until browned, about 8 minutes. Let
cool, about 10 minutes.

DOWNED WORKERS PROGRAM
Your Los Angeles Water and Power Employees’ Association
has introduced a new component of its assistance programs.
As it has done since the early 1930’s, your Water & Power
Employees’ Association added the Downed Workers Program
to complement the benefits offered by the Department and
Local 18.
The new Downed Workers Program will assist family members
of Department employee that requires hospitalization after
sustaining work related injuries. We know that having loved
ones nearby helps recovery, and eases stress during these
difficult times. This program provides instant monetary
disbursements for the cost of family member transportation,
housing, food, and other miscellaneous expenses incurred
while attending to, or visiting the injured employee, with no
expectation of repayment. Upon release from the hospital,
a recovering employee may seek assistance from our other
programs, such as, medical equipment grants and emergency
loans.
We thank the Power System for conceiving this program
and introducing it to the Employees’ Association Board
of Directors in early 2009. Representatives of the Power
Safety & Training Group also met with our Board on several
occasions to develop program guidelines. In November 2009,
the Employees’ Association Board approved the guidelines
and allocated funding for program establishment. In March
2010 program introduction began at quarterly Safety
meetings and in New Employee Orientations. The response
was immediate, and employees generously contributed to the
Donors’ Welfare Plan.
The new Downed Workers Program fulfills our stated mission
of providing assistance to employees and their families.
We should be proud to have programs that help our fellow
employees and the community during difficult times.
Remember, all assistance programs rely on Donors’ Welfare
Plan funding, so we seek your support in promoting this
program and encouraging employees to contribute.
