Alberta Health Services: EMS
BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY
STRYKER
Alberta Health
Services EMS would like to remind parents
STRYKER
and students about some
basic BASKETBALL
road safety tips, as streets
STRYKER
become more congested,
with theVOLLEYBALL
return of the school year.
Pedestrians
Motorists
• Avoid talking on cell phones, texting, or any other behavior
that diverts your attention away from driving.
• Give right of way to pedestrians who have activated overhead crossing lights, or who are waiting to cross from a street
corner.
• Remember, it is illegal to pass vehicles - other than those
that are parked - in school zones or playground zones, during
posted hours.
And motorists both have an important role to play – road
safety is a shared responsibility.
Around school buses
• Flashing amber lights mean a bus is slowing down to stop.
Motorists should do likewise.
• No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP,
when approaching a school bus with activated flashing red
lights – unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided
highway from you.
• Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert and
cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.
Pedestrians
• Cross only at marked crosswalks, or street corners that have
clear visibility from all directions.
• Make eye contact with all drivers before crossing the street.
• When activating overhead crossing lights, pause before
stepping off the curb to ensure motorists in both directions
have come to a complete stop.
• Stay within the crosswalk lines until fully clear of the roadway.
• Obey pedestrian lights at intersections. Cross the street
only when you see the ‘walk’ sign and only when all cars
have come to a complete stop.
• If you are with young children or pets, hold your child’s
hand firmly and keep a solid grip on leashes when crossing.
• Remember: children learn by observing. By demonstrating
safe crossing habits, you can reduce the chances of your child
being involved in a preventable auto/pedestrian collision.

Recently, in working with these facilities, I was surprised
to learn that, as a City, we lack a formalized competitive
process, with the naming rights of many buildings being
awarded to the first corporation to make an offer. Because of this, I brought forth and received support from
Council colleagues in asking for a review of our naming
process to have greater oversight.
The full review will be received by Council by the end of
2014.

The naming process includes facilities that are wholly
owned by the City, as well as our civic partners which
receive lands, funds, or other major contributions from
Municipal dollars. In reviewing the policy we seek to establish a more competitive process to get the best dollar
value for our public assets while still maintaining the integrity and cultural value of our public facilities.

2015-2018 Budget & Council Priorities, Transit Rate
Increases
Approved in May 2014, Council Priorities 2015 – 2018
are set by City Council and focus on Calgarians and the
services they want and need to achieve their goals. They
include defined outcomes for each of the five priority areas and 44 strategic actions to provide direction for City
of Calgary Administration. These priorities are, as follows:
• A prosperous city
• A well-run city
• A city of inspiring neighbourhoods
• A healthy and green city
• A city that moves
In July, proposed increases and changes to Transit rates
were brought to Council, in conjunction with the Budget
talks. This included proposed increases to Senior Transit
Rates, including those for low income seniors.
september 2014 I Great News publishing I Call 403-263-3044 for advertising opportunities
dIANe CoLLey-urQuhArT CONT’D
I, along with many of my Council, have concerns over the
proposed increases, including failure to consider the impact of these increases on all low income Calgarians, not
just low income seniors. As such, rate increases were not
approved and Administration will report back to Council
this fall with new recommendations, including those for
all low income Calgarians.
Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation
On July 1st, the Federal Government’s comprehensive
new Anti-Spam Legislation came into effect. This legislation is designed to protect Canadians while ensuring that
businesses can still operate and market to its customers
and consumers.
This piece of legislation has also changed the way my
office is able to contact you about Ward 13 and City issues. My office now requires your permission to send you
email updates and online newsletters. If you would like to

You
are Invited to the “Let’s Talk About Wellness”
Engagement - This Fall!
I was honoured to launch “Alberta’s Strategic Approach to Wellness: Health for All, Wellness for Life” at the International Wellness
Symposium, with Dr. James Talbot, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer
of Health. This strategy is the most comprehensive framework
of its kind, and it goes beyond encouraging Albertans to get inOpening the new Skateboarding Park in Woodcreek with incredible excited supporters
volved in healthy eating and active living: it sets the stage for the
upcoming “Let’s Talk About Wellness” public engagement project.
This fall, the Wellness Engagement will be facilitated by yours truly and Dr. Talbot; and will feature a town-to-town tour, which will
facilitate community conversations for individuals to share their
ideas and priorities for wellness. Coming together to discuss how
we can promote and encourage wellness will lead to the transformative actions needed to improve health outcomes and quality
of life for Albertans. The engagement will provide Albertans who
choose to participate with an opportunity to shape the discourse
of wellness policy in Alberta for years to come. Visit www.talkwellness.ca to learn more about this initiative, and express your interest in taking part. You are also welcome to call my Wellness office
in Edmonton or my constituency office in Calgary-Lougheed!
Wise Investments in Innovative Medical Research in Alberta
Your government is helping to improve the health and wellbeing of Albertans facing brain and mental health issues, as well
as chronic diseases. The $200 million investment is designed to
transform medical research in Alberta for students of Campus
Alberta, and for people throughout the world. The funding is
targeted at brain and mental health studies, and in research of
infections and inflammation. Your government is providing $100
million over 10 years through an agreement with the University
of Calgary, to match the donation by international businessman
and U of C alumnus Geoffrey Cumming. More than 2,400 students
are enrolled in the Cumming School of Medicine, which has seven
research institutes, more than $140 million in annual sponsored
research, and employs over 3,500 people.
Alberta Launches Mentorship Campaign to Support Children
and Youth in Care
Growing up can be difficult; and one caring adult who provides
guidance and encouragement in a child’s life can make all the
16
difference. Too many of our children and youth come into care
from unhealthy, unsafe homes: there are about 8,000 children in
government care at any given point in time; and many have never
experienced a positive role model in their lives. That’s why our government is launching a province-wide mentorship campaign to
support these children and youth. “#8000mentors” is a recruitment
campaign with the goal to find a caring, adult mentor for every
child in care in Alberta, while attracting more mentors--particularly
from Aboriginal and ethno-cultural communities--who can share
important cultural experiences and community connections with
young people of similar backgrounds. #8000mentors will include
print, radio, and social media messages to create awareness of the
need for mentors. In addition, $365,000 is provided to three community agencies to help attract, train, and match mentors with
children and youth in care. Mentoring is key to addressing many
of the root causes that bring children into care; and it supports our
5-point plan to improve the child intervention system. Children
with mentors have a greater chance at success; do better in school;
have higher self-esteem; are less likely to be involved with crime
or drugs; and are more likely to give back to their community. Currently, youth in care between the ages of 13 and 20 are in most
need of a mentor. Our government is encouraging business and
community leaders to promote and provide mentorship opportunities for young people. Please consider stepping up and donating
your time to help a child in need; it can be literally life changing!
Tell your family, friends, colleagues about #8000mentors and ask
them to get involved. Let’s work together to create hope and opportunity for all young people in Alberta. To learn more and sign up
to be a mentor, please visit www.Albertamentors.ca/8000mentors.
Albertans Can Receive 8 weeks of Job-protected Leave to Care
for Gravely Ill Family Members
Employees taking compassionate care leave can return to the
same or comparable position (similar to new mothers after maternity leave or armed forces reservists when they return from
duty). Employees must have worked at least 1 year for their employer to be eligible, and must provide a certificate signed by
the attending physician regarding the grave condition of the
family member and his or her need for care.
Alberta Remains On Course for Economic Success in the Year Ahead
In the last fiscal year, Alberta created more jobs than all other provinces combined! Our strong balance sheet at the end of the fiscal
year demonstrates our fiscally responsible budget, which enabled us
to turn a corner financially—while dealing with the devastating effects of the flood. Despite this $6 billion event, volatile energy prices,
and an influx of newcomers to Alberta, we ended the fiscal year with
an operational surplus of $2.5 billion, and a fiscal plan surplus of $755
million. Alberta is leading all other provinces with economic growth
of 3.9% GDP--nearly double the national rate--and our unemployment rate continues to remain the lowest in the country. As we move
forward, we will continue to spend responsibly while investing in the
core programs and services that are priorities for Albertans. We will
also continue to build for the future—one in which an ever growing
number of people will be proud to call Alberta their home!

I am writing this September newsletter with a degree of
sadness as today it is just the end of July. It is amazing how
quickly our summer passes here in Alberta. I hope you made
the best of it at all of the attractions in our amazing neighbourhoods.
Some highlights for me this summer so far in Calgary Shaw:
My plot is still flourishing at the Mid- Sun Community Garden
and I am looking forward to a bumper crop to donate to the
Calgary Food Bank.
I was overwhelmed with the response to my challenge to our
neighbours to host a block party this summer. I have attended a number already this month and there are several more
in the works for August and September. I know community
building goes on every day in our neighbourhoods, but it is
truly inspiring to see it in action at these block parties. It is
very rewarding to be able to facilitate these celebrations of
community spirit and I am very grateful to be able to attend
and meet new folks in our community.

Hello Friends,
Our Wildrose Caucus Stampede Smokehouse was a huge hit
again this year with Danielle Smith and our MLAs serving well
over a thousand people. We also raised $600 for the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society and hosted them for an adopt-a-thon.
Moving forward, we are all settling back into routine, kids are
heading back to school and autumn is just around the corner.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a special thanks
to all of the amazing volunteers who make up our school
parent councils. I had the privilege of attending many of the
meetings last school year, and I am just humbled by these
volunteers dedication to the goal of enhancing students’
learning experiences and enriching the educational experience overall. As a parent of a child about to enter his school
career, I thank you for making our schools a great place for
him to begin.
Keep an eye out for signs in the community in early September for our next town hall meeting before the Legislature goes
back into session. I really appreciate that so many of you take
time out of your busy schedules to connect with not only me,
but your neighbours on important issues in the community.

CPS: Stopping
the Reign of
Bullies
Schools should be a safe haven for our children where
they can learn, make friends and discover their own
unique gifts. Unfortunately, some children are denied
this positive experience because they’re involved in
bullying.
Bullying is a serious problem in schools across our city
and, recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Calgary Police Service supports the www.howwasyour
day.ca website, designed to encourage parents to ask
their children about their lives and not just settle for
“fine” or “good” as answers.
Most anti-bullying campaigns tend to focus on social
awareness, but the goal of howwasyourday.ca is to
initiate more action against bullying. Being afraid and
worried about going to school should not be a part of
the lives of Calgary’s children.
The website provides tips for parents, teachers and
children. Parents can find information on how to deal
with their child being bullied, or what to do if their
child is a bully, as well as information to tell children if
they witness bullying. Teachers will find resources and
tips for addressing bullying, and children can reference
the site to gain a better understanding of bullying and
how to stop it.
Children who are bullied may not talk about their experiences because they feel ashamed, or don’t think that
an adult will believe them or help them. Howwasyourday.ca suggests some of the following questions you
20
can ask your child to learn more about what is going
on in their lives:
• What was the best thing/worst thing that happened
today?
• Who do you spend time with at school? What are they
like?
• Do you get along with people at school?
• How do you treat other children?
• What is it like on the bus/on the school yard/on the
walk to and from school?
• How would you describe bullying? What is it like?
• What happens in the school hallways or in the lunchroom?
• Does anyone you know get picked on at school?
What do you think about it?
• Do any kids you know get mean emails or messages?
What would you do if you got one?
Bullying is violence and, if not stopped, can lead to
more violent behavior as children grow up. Statistics show that as many as one out of four elementary
school students who bully have a criminal record by
the time they’re 30 years old.
As parents, teachers and children, we need to pull
together to put a stop to bullying. Children should
no longer fear going to school and other children
shouldn’t think that they can bully their peers.
For more information on bullying and how to manage it, please visit www.calgarypolice.ca and search
“Bullying”.
