The promise of a good “B and B” is a clean place, a good night’s sleep, and a good meal to begin the day. In short, rest and sustenance. Is it too irreverent to propose that today’s feast is a reminder that we believers have available the “B and B” of all “B and Bs” in the Eucharist? This sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ offers an ongoing opportunity for rest and sustenance with the Lord. Today’s scriptures all deal with offering sustenance, beginning with Melchizedek presenting Abraham a little bread and wine along with a blessing. Then there is Paul reminding the fractious Corinthians how eating the bread and wine sustains them as they proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. Finally, Jesus provides rest and sustenance for his disciples, along with five thousand others who show up. My late stepfather worked off a truck, checking gas meters and doing repairs for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. He used to stop in a church and have his lunch there. He said it provided him a chance to talk to the Lord and rest for a few moments in the Lord’s presence. It sustained him over the years. Again, rest and sustenance. God’s ongoing hospitality in the Eucharist has continued over generations to offer rest and sustenance. What could be better than having the Lord coming to dwell within us, giving us the nourishment necessary to sustain us on our journey? —James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. The LORD said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool." The scepter of your power the LORD will stretch forth from Zion: "Rule in the midst of your enemies." "Yours is princely power in the day of your birth, in holy splendor; before the daystar, like the dew, I have begotten you." The LORD has sworn, and he will not repent: "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." R: You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek. Today’s Readings Second Reading (1Cor 1123-26) Gospel Reading (Lk 9:11B-17) First Reading (Gn 14:18-20) Paul briefly narrates the earliest account of the institution of the Eucharist. Paul states that though not personally present, he received this as a tradition handed on to him, that Christ left us a memorial of his total self-giving sacrifice for us all in the bread and wine, symbolic of his body and blood. To do this in memory of Jesus means that disciples are to model Jesus in offering their lives in self-giving sacrifice on behalf of others. Whenever we celebrate the Eucharist and give of ourselves for others, we proclaim Christ’s life-giving Death until He comes again. The multiplication of the loaves and fishes appears in all four Gospel accounts, testifying to its importance for Jesus’ followers. It became the clearest story associated with Eucharistic celebrations and the corresponding demands that celebrating Eucharist places on all disciples. Jesus invites us as he did his disciples not to dismiss others, no matter how challenging. In so doing, we are to bring what we have to the Lord, ask for God’s blessing and proceed to take care of all in need. Jesus assures us that not only will we have enough to go around, but we will have plenty left over The priest king Melchizedek of Salem who blesses Abram and God Most High for Abram’s victory over his foes is a mysterious person who appears once and is not heard of again in the Abraham narrative. Salem means peace, and is understood to refer to Jerusalem, the city of peace that David made the spiritual and political capital of Israel. In bringing out bread and wine for the offering, Melchizedek prefigures Christ’s offering of himself in the symbols of bread and wine. Today’s feast celebrates that sacrificial gift which Christ left us, and recalls its prefigurement in the offering of the priest-king of Salem, Melchizedek. SUMMER MASS SCHEDULE As you are aware Fr. Chiaravalle no longer resides at St. Cornelius but at the Villa St. Joseph for retired priests. I was hoping for a replacement for Fr. Chiaravalle, however I was informed by the Archdiocese that no priest will be assigned for the foreseeable future. Presently we have five Sunday Masses, of which I celebrate three and the Oblates have taken two in recent weeks. I have asked the Oblates to permanently take two Masses, but because of aging and diminishing numbers, they are only able to handle one Mass a week. After consulting with the Parish Council, the Finance Council and Stewardship & Development, they have recommended, and I have accepted their recommendation, that we move to an experimental summer schedule which will consist of the following Masses; Saturday Vigil 5:00 PM, Sunday 8:30 AM, 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM beginning June 19. If a priest becomes available for assignment to St. Cornelius, then we can re-visit the schedule. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during this period of change. Page Five The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Welcome to the Parish 2016 Catholic Charities Appeal: A New Vision So far this year, we have raised $78,399 (57%) towards our goal of $137,095. I know we can surpass this once again. You have until December 31, 2016, to make your gift. For all those who have responded so generously to this appeal each year, your charity never ceases to amaze me and you truly set an example for the rest of the parishes in the Archdiocese of what it means to give back. Thank you! We live our Faith when we show LOVE to those most in need – Archbishop Chaput Family Promise - Support Church Volunteers Getting Involved Pablo and Karina Aragon and family Seth and Jennifer Crossan and family Kathleen Jurjans and family Ryan and Katelyn Scaffidi Memorial Day, May 30 Mass: 9:00am Parish Office Will Be Closed CONGRATULATIONS! “To love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are dear brothers and sisters, the face of Jesus.” (Pope Francis, Address during visit at “Dono Di Maria”, Homeless Shelter 5/21/13) Saint Cornelius’ eighty volunteers are receiving information by email about volunteer opportunities at two Host Churches for a week at the end of May and at the end of June. In the future, the Host Church that we will regularly be supporting is Kennett Presbyterian, 211 S. Broad Street. They are completing a church renovation project, so we will partner with them four times a year once the project is completed. If you would like to start volunteering at the Family Promise Day Center, 105 W. Evergreen St., West Grove, PA 19390, you may call Susan Minarchi /ED at: 610-3451100 or email at sminarchi@familypromisescc.org to volunteer. Family Promise is a nonprofit, non-denominational organization for homeless families. Southern Chester County has signed up to be one of nearly 200 countrywide affiliates. Throughout the year, families are housed at 13 different Host Congregations, with the help of Support Congregations, for one week, four different times a year. To become a volunteer, please call Kathy Silvon at: 484-720-8214 or Joan Holliday at: 610-717-2180 Congratulations to Lauren Lindley, who was one of 5 seniors in the Archdiocese to receive a Certificate of Excellence for her dedication to the music ministry at St. Cornelius Parish for the past 8 years. ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME “What is your HOUSEHOLD CARBON FOOTPRINT?” From Global Catholic Climate Movement, ECO-PARISH GUIDE for “BRINGING LAUDATO SI TO LIFE”: A household carbon footprint is the total amount of GHG (greenhouse gas, or CO2e – carbon dioxide equivalent) that can be attributed to the choices, actions, and life styles of the members of a household. In developed countries (such as the US), a large part of the foot print comes from indirect sources, especially energy used to produce consumer goods and services…. Household and personal carbon footprints are highly individual and depend on location, housing, transportation, and other personal habits and choices. What is your “HOUSEHOLD CARBON FOOTPRINT”? To estimate your household and personal carbon footprint, you can use the following calculator developed by the US EPA: https://www3.epa.gov/carbon-footprint-calculator/ If you are like me, and consider yourself living a “simple consumerists lifestyle,” you will be shocked to find out that your lifestyle requires more than four globes to sustain, or put simply: our family energy emissions are FOUR TIMES beyond the capacity of our earth to regenerate the energy and emissions we generate! From the above Eco-Parish Guide: TOP 5 GHG EMISSION REDUCTION IDEAS FOR HOUSEHOLDERS: 1. Dress for the weather and dial back the thermostat (winter), or dial up (summer). 2. Walk, cycle, ride public transit, or carpool instead of driving a car. 3. Buy only energy efficient lights, devices and appliances, and turn them off when not in use. 4. Eliminate waste by reusing, recycling, composting, and purchasing only what is needed. 5. Forego unnecessary air travel. Led by Monsignor Parlante, it was truly a wonderful tribute to our heavenly Mother. REFLECTIONS OF FIRST COMMUNION 2016 It has been a good year preparing the children in Faith Formation for the Sacrament of First Eucharist. I am grateful to our outstanding Catechists, Mrs. Huntley, Mrs. Haynes, Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Hurford, Mrs. Totorello, Mrs. Ricci, and Miss Patselas who worked diligently with these children. I am especially grateful to Monsignor Parlante for bringing these children closer to Jesus through the Blessed Sacrament. This year we had quite a few children with special needs that received Jesus for the irst time. Monsignor Parlante was so instrumental and patient with these children and their families.
