SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) is the second
largest school district in Orange County. Formed in 1965,
CUSD has recognized that the Visual and Performing Arts
play an important role and is an essential part of a wellrounded education for all students in its district. Implemented
by CUSD’s first Music Coordinator, Cyril Gallick, every CUSD
student in fourth and fifth grade receives “Block Music”,
which includes two 40-minute music lessons weekly in band,
orchestra, general music and/or choir. Middle and High
School students can take co-curricular courses in band, choir,
orchestra, drama, visual arts, dance, and AP and IB music
courses, which are aligned with the state standards and meet
the UCI Fine Arts requirements.
Recognized nationally for its outstanding music program, the
District aims to foster creativity, teach effective communication,
and instill self-discipline and commitment through the arts.
The Capistrano Unified School District was twice named as
one of the “Top 100 Communities for Music Education in
America” by the American Music Conference and most recently
was recognized with a 2015 High School Grammy Signature
School Award.
