Effective July 1, 2015, the Healthy Workplaces,
Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB 1522) requires
that, with limited exception, employers with employees
who work in California must provide paid sick time to
current and new employees. Employers should be aware
that although accrual of paid sick leave goes into effect
on July 1, 2015, notice and posting requirements go into
effect on January 1, 2015.

• Employers should display the sick leave poster in a
place where employees can readily read it.
• Since 2013, employers in California have been
required to provide new nonexempt employees
with Wage Theft Prevention Act forms. This form
has been revised for 2015 to include information
regarding paid sick leave.
• For nonexempt employees hired before January
1, 2015, the employer is required to provide
information regarding paid sick leave using any
of the alternative methods specified in Labor
Code section 2810.5(b). Note, although the notice
requirements of Labor Code section 2810.5 do not
apply to exempt employees, employers will need
to convey their sick leave policies to all employees
through links to updated policies or an email
message.
• Employers should also review their current
vacation, paid time off, and sick leave policies and
make necessary updates in anticipation of the new
paid sick leave law that goes into effect on
July 1, 2015.

Change is Annoying!
I find it rather amusing that most of us will say “change is good!” to one another but secretly often find change
rather annoying in one way or another. For example, my husband reorganized and cleaned our garage several
months ago and moved all the trash cans outside to the side yard. Great idea, gives us more room in the
garage…this is a good change! Except that now the old place we used to put items to go into the recycle bin
doesn’t make sense, and we didn’t think about a new place for those things to go. Sounds like a small and silly
thing, but in the hustle and bustle of everyday life it became annoying.
If you’ve driven on Crown Valley Parkway recently, you’ve seen and been affected by the changes the City
is making in the medians along the street. One of the things you’ve seen change is that green grass is being
Heidi Fisher
replaced by drought tolerant plants. Great change, we’re in a drought! But the process is a bit annoying and

just as soon as you get used to which lanes are closed, the work crews move on and different lanes are closed. Proprietor

underway, but the process can be annoying.
(949) 249-9463
So then, how hard is it to make change in your business? We all talk about how “business as usual” doesn’t work and the need to
continually evaluate what we’re doing and look at ways to change…but it’s easier said than done. I’m as guilty of that as the next
person…ask my husband! But the truth is that so much of life changes, sometimes very fast, and we get caught up in being annoyed at the
process or the end result. We are creatures of habit and change takes us out of our comfort zone. Sometimes that is invigorating, but more
often not.
Just as you force your body to adapt to changes when you exercise, it takes effort to force your mind to adapt to changes in thinking. And we all know the more you do something, the easier it gets and the better you become at it. The
2015 CHAMBER OFFICERS &
old adage “practice makes perfect” really fits here. So now let’s take that thought back to your
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
business…how often do you think about ways to change your business? To improve a process, product
OFFICERS
or service? Do you think all the way through it and map it all out? The more you do this, the easier it
Chairman of the Board
will get, the better you will become at it and the less annoying it will be. And the end result will likely

be greater efficiency for you, your employees or customers and/or greater financial success. Who

doesn’t want that?

Owners Keely Watson and Liz Wright met in San Diego during
their certification course in 2007. They started working for Club
Pilates in 2012 and loved its mission to make Pilates affordable,
fun and more accessible to all. They were honored to introduce
CP to Orange County, with their own locations in San Juan
Capistrano, Mission Viejo and Laguna Niguel! CHAMBER CELEBRATIONS

Endurance House is a premier specialty retail store designed
for endurance fitness enthusiasts to learn, shop and be a part of a
community! They feature popular brands presented by genuine
and encouraging consultants. Endurance House Orange County is
committed to giving back to like-minded organizations that support
athletes and their endeavors. They chose to partner with Special
Olympics Southern California-Orange County and gave back 10
percent of their total grand opening weekend sales to raise funds for
sports training and competition programs for children and adults
with intellectual disabilities.
Originally named “Contrology,” Pilates improves core strength,
flexibility and balance; an excellent supplement to golf, running,
tennis, etc.
Club Pilates offers classes for all levels seven days a week.
Group sessions are led by excellent instructors prepared to modify
exercises for special populations including those with injuries,
spinal disorders, pre/post-natal, etc. Clients use the traditional
Reformer, wall-mounted Springboards, TRX suspension training
system and more. CP loves variety; you’ll never do the same class
twice! This studio is proud to offer a complimentary Fundamentals class
every Sunday morning at 11:45 am, perfect for the brand new
client who may be intimidated. You are encouraged to RSVP
through their website.
Keely and Liz hope to see you in the studio soon!
Endurance House introduced a star athlete, Joseph, who competes
in the Special Olympics. He is quite a remarkable young man who
eloquently spoke on his involvement in the program and in the
competitions.
