For those interested in Australian maritime history, we manufacture our own colonial series of wooden model ship kits. Successful completion of a model ship does not demand any particular skills. Rather, it simply requires neatness, an “eye” for what looks right, an unhurried methodical approach and above all, patience. Models are built in four main stages: 1. The framework and deck assembly 2. Individual planks are shaped and fitted to the hull and the masts and yards are assembled. 3. The hull and masts are painted and/or varnished. 4. The “standing’ and “running” rigging are completed. Whilst the time necessary for completion will depend on the complexity of the particular model, as well as the keenness of the modeller, it should be said that even the smaller models in our range will take some time to finish. A time scale of between 6 and 12 months from start to finish would not be unusual. Our kits are divided into skill levels so we know you will find a kit that is right for you. The project should always be seen as a pleasure rather than a chore with any minor problems that crop up adding to the ultimate satisfaction of building your model. We encourage you to take photos of your work as you progress to record the development of your model. Modellers Shipyard has been serving modellers for 30 years. We are a family business. Importantly though, we are experienced modellers so we know what you are talking about when you ask for assistance. If you would like to visit us, please phone for an appointment. When people do visit we want to make sure we give you our full attention. Do I need any previous modelling experience? Many of our customers have never built a model before contacting us. We offer kits, tools and DVDs for the first time modeller. What tools are needed? We offer a beginners tool pack which contains all the tools your will need to get started with your hobby. We also provide a range of tools for the more experienced modeller. Do I need any books? All our kits provide instructions which tell you what to do. We have an extensive range of books and also offer great training DVDs on different aspects of modelling. Should I built a kit or make a model from scratch? We recommend that first time modellers build a kit. Kits have the advantage of introducing modellers to the approaches and techniques of wooden model ship building. For people who decide to build from scratch we recommend that you have access to a very good workshop, range of tools, and are able to make your own planks and most of the fittings yourself. What is double planking ? This is a simple method of applying two layers of planking to the hull, instead of one. The first layer is usually limewood, or a similar timber which is soft and easy to work with. The second layer is thinner and more decorative timber such as walnut or mahogany. This layer looks beautiful when vanished. The advantage of this method is that any ‘hills’ or ‘hollows’ or mistakes in the first layer can be levelled off before the second layer is fitted. Do all models have sails? Generally models in which sails are not shown in the photograph do not have ready made or cloth and patterns in the kit. When a photograph of a model, does have a sails either fully set or furled , sail cloth and pattern is supplied. A few such as the ‘ Shenandoah, ‘ ‘Flying Fish’ and ‘Resolution’ have ready made sails supplied with the kit. We can supply ready made sails at an extra cost. Is a display baseboard included in the kit? This depends on the manufacturer. Generally Mantua do not include a display base in their kits, however some do have a simple ply cradle. Most other kits do have a display base of some sort, but it may vary from that shown in our catalogue or on the lid of the box. A decision on the final display baseboard can be left until the model is complete. Is it better to paint or clear vanish? That’s up to you- most kits have been designed with a variety of naturally coloured timbers, with the idea that you will use vanish. Varnishing can be easier than painting. Is a name plate included? Sometimes. If you are wondering whether the kit you wish to purchase has a nameplate, please give us call. We can supply name plates at an extra cost. Which models are suitable for a child? We offer a range of models for children, just check out catalogue. Why buy a model ship from an internet based business? Whether you’re building a model for the first time or you’re an experienced modeller, you’ll find a kit here that will bring you many hours of enjoyment. We have high quality kits that everyone can afford. Our kits are imported from Italy and we manufacture our very own kits relevant to Australian colonial maritime history. We have identified a number of kits that would be suitable if you are building a model kit for the first time. These are identified as Skill Level 1 & 2. Also we have a few models that would be suitable for a 12 + years old child with adult guidance which are identified as Skill Level 1. All our kits have been categorised under Skill Levels. These levels are explained below. All our kits come with all timbers, fittings, plans and instructions to complete the model. Also all our model ship kits have two layers of planking (double planked) except where identified. Skill Levels We have divided all our kits into six Skill Levels. These levels are described below. All Skill Levels require the modeller to be able to follow written instructions and to read and interpret plans & drawings. The Skill Levels are: Skill Level 1 (SL1) kits can be built without prior model building experience, using simple hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 1 kits require cutting & fitting of timbers. Kits in this skill level are suitable for a 12+ year old child to build with adult guidance. Skill Level 2 (SL2) kits require slightly more skill and some prior experience using hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 2 kits require cutting, fitting and shaping of timber pieces. Skill Level 3 (SL3) kits are intended for the person having some prior experience building wooden model kits. Skill Level 3 kits contain parts that require cutting, fitting, shaping and fabricating wooden and possibly metal parts. Skill Level 4 (SL4) kits are intended for the experienced modeller. Before building a Skill Level 4 kit it is recommended the modeller construct a Skill Level 3 kit. Skill Level 5 (SL5) kits are for the experienced period model ship builder. Skill Level 6 (SL6) kits are for the expert period model ship builder. The three most important characteristics for a successful modeller are patience, patience and yet more patience. Before cutting or gluing anything give a lot of thought to the task at hand, re-read the instructions, re-examine and interpret the plans. Campbell launched his first ship the Perseverance, a 136 ton brig, at the site of Australia‟s first shipbuilding yards in 1807. In 1810, the Perseverance was fitted out for a trip to the southern oceans on which the ships Captain Frederick Hasselborough discovered two new sealing grounds, Campbell Island which he named after his employer, and Macquaire Island, named after the Governor of New South Wales at the time. Sadly on his return voyage to Campbell Island, Captain Hasselborough, drowned when his jollyboat capsized in Perseverance Harbour, Campbell Island, 4th November 1810. The last voyage of the Perseverance began on the 7th September 1828, when she departed Sydney headed to New Zealand. In October 1828 she was wrecked on Campbell Island. The Perseverance, was employed in the Southern New Zealand trade the whole of her career, with the exception of a short period when used as a hulk at Sydney. The inland The HMS Sirius was the flag ship of the First Fleet. This frigate, under the command river system of the Murray, Darling, Lachlan and Murrumbidgee formed a network to of Captain Arthur Phillip, led a fleet of 11 ships carrying 1350 convicts, sailors and connect inland communities across the Australian states. The ‘Friedrich Wilhelm Zu Pferde’ had been its escort as well as the ‘Hoffnung’ during the trips up the Western Africa coast and up to the Shetland Islands. She departed Brest on 1 August 1785 under Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle, along with the Boussole under CAESAR - Roman Bireme 30BC La Perouse. Christian Fletcher, the boatswain, took command of the ship and forced Bligh to embark on a life-boat with 18 still faithful men. After a dangerous navigation for more than 4000 miles, Bligh reached the isle of Timor and afterwards England. The Bounty went to Pitcairn Isle where Fletcher and the remaining men settled. Only 20 years later the group landed in Tahiti was captured and tried by the English Court-martial. Only three seamen where condemned, while the others were acquitted. The Cutty Sark was destined for the China tea trade, at that time an intensely competitive race across the globe from China to London, with immense profits to the ship to arrive with the first tea of the year. In the most famous race, against Thermopylae in 1872, both ships left Shanghai together on June 18, but two weeks later Cutty Sark lost her rudder after passing through the Sunda Strait, and arrived in London on October 18, a week after Thermopylae, for a total passage of 122 days. Her legendary reputation is supported by the fact that her captain chose to continue this race with an improvised rudder instead of putting into port for a replacement, yet was only beaten by one week. The Cutty Sark was then used in the Australian wool trade. Under the command of the respected Captain Richard Woodget, she did very well, posting Australia-to-England times of as little as 67 days. She was said to have been the fastest of any ship of her size. She is now in dry-dock at Greenwich. It formed part of the series of frigates known as “Mahonesas”, as they had been built in the city of Mahón. Thanks to its design, it could sail faster than its predecessors. It took part in the war against France along the Catalan coast although, during the war of Independence, its base was in Cadiz. As a member of the naval forces of Havana, it took part in battles against the corsairs in the Antilles and made various trips across the Atlantic. It was broken up in 1833 in the naval shipyard of Cartagena. Her hull was modified, with space below decks to bring the slaves from Africa to Cuba for the sugar plantations. Her last voyage as a slaver was in 1830, sailing out of the port of Havana on 13th July, with a crew of 34 and armed with a single carronade, 16 rifles and 15 pistols. She was captured by the British brig HMS Black Joke, with 567 African captives aboard. She was then put up for auction and purchased by the Commodore of the British Anti-Slavery Squadron, Jonathan Hayes, who converted into an interception ship and named her Fair Rosamond. She patrolled the seas around Cuba until she was withdrawn from service in 1843. Some remained in service up until the 1960s. On traditional holidays, the sinagots pitted themselves in hardfought regattas. HM BOMB VESSEL GRANADO - 1742 The Bomb Vessel Granado was ordered on 14th September 1741 and the contract was given to the Ipswich shipbuilder John Barnard. Launched on 22nd June 1742. Her construction work was overseen by the great Navel surveyor and architect Thomas Slade who later designed Nelson’s Victory. Granado’s lines (and very uncommon carving work for such a vessel) suggest she was originally intended as a sloop. For the first 14 years of her operational career, Granado was indeed fitted out as a sloop, not a bomb vessel. From 1745 to 1748 Granado was mainly employed off the East coast of England intercepting smugglers and privateers. Fly continued convoy duties until she foundered and was lost off Newfound-land during 1802.
