For those interested in Australian maritime history, we manufacture our own colonial series of wooden model ship kits.
Successful completion of a model ship does not demand any particular skills. Rather, it simply requires neatness, an “eye” for what looks right, an unhurried methodical
approach and above all, patience.
Models are built in four main stages:
1. The framework and deck assembly
2. Individual planks are shaped and fitted to the hull and the masts and yards are assembled.
3. The hull and masts are painted and/or varnished.
4. The “standing’ and “running” rigging are completed.
Whilst the time necessary for completion will depend on the complexity of the particular model, as well as the keenness of the modeller, it should be said that even the
smaller models in our range will take some time to finish. A time scale of between 6 and 12 months from start to finish would not be unusual. Our kits are divided into
skill levels so we know you will find a kit that is right for you.
The project should always be seen as a pleasure rather than a chore with any minor problems that crop up adding to the ultimate satisfaction of building your model. We
encourage you to take photos of your work as you progress to record the development of your model.

available in our online learning centre soon.

Who are Modellers Shipyard ?
Modellers Shipyard has been serving modellers for 30 years. We are a family business. Importantly though, we are experienced modellers so we know what you are
talking about when you ask for assistance. If you would like to visit us, please phone for an appointment. When people do visit we want to make sure we give you our full
attention.
Do I need any previous modelling experience?
Many of our customers have never built a model before contacting us. We offer kits, tools and DVDs for the first time modeller.
What tools are needed?
We offer a beginners tool pack which contains all the tools your will need to get started with your hobby. We also provide a range of tools for the more experienced modeller.
Do I need any books?
All our kits provide instructions which tell you what to do. We have an extensive range of books and also offer great training DVDs on different aspects of modelling.
Should I built a kit or make a model from scratch?
We recommend that first time modellers build a kit. Kits have the advantage of introducing modellers to the approaches and techniques of wooden model ship building.
For people who decide to build from scratch we recommend that you have access to a very good workshop, range of tools, and are able to make your own planks and
most of the fittings yourself.
What is double planking ?
This is a simple method of applying two layers of planking to the hull, instead of one. The first layer is usually limewood, or a similar timber which is soft and easy to work
with. The second layer is thinner and more decorative timber such as walnut or mahogany. This layer looks beautiful when vanished. The advantage of this method is
that any ‘hills’ or ‘hollows’ or mistakes in the first layer can be levelled off before the second layer is fitted.
Do all models have sails?
Generally models in which sails are not shown in the photograph do not have ready made or cloth and patterns in the kit. When a photograph of a model, does have a
sails either fully set or furled , sail cloth and pattern is supplied. A few such as the ‘ Shenandoah, ‘ ‘Flying Fish’ and ‘Resolution’ have ready made sails supplied with the
kit. We can supply ready made sails at an extra cost.
Is a display baseboard included in the kit?
This depends on the manufacturer. Generally Mantua do not include a display base in their kits, however some do have a simple ply cradle. Most other kits do have a
display base of some sort, but it may vary from that shown in our catalogue or on the lid of the box. A decision on the final display baseboard can be left until the model is
complete.
Is it better to paint or clear vanish?
That’s up to you- most kits have been designed with a variety of naturally coloured timbers, with the idea that you will use vanish. Varnishing can be easier than painting.
Is a name plate included?
Sometimes. If you are wondering whether the kit you wish to purchase has a nameplate, please give us call. We can supply name plates at an extra cost.
Which models are suitable for a child?

We consider all items in our Catalogue as normal stock and we endeavour to hold all those listed. There may be times however, when an item is temporarily out of stock or unavailable at
the time of your order. If this is the case we will tell you so, giving you an honest appraisal, based on the suppliers’ information, of when you can expect delivery.
Our Catalogue should be read in conjunction with our current Price List. Our current Price List will be supplied with our Catalogue along with an Order Form. The prices presented in the
Price List are correct and applicable at the time of printing. However due to currency exchange rate variations, changes in manufacturers’ prices, variations in international air freight fuel

When you receive your kit please carefully and thoroughly examine all the contents and familiarise your self with the plans, instructions and contents. If there is a missing
or broken part please advise us immediately. Please check carefully as some parts of a model kit have to be made by the modeller from timber and fittings supplied in
the kit. What may appear to be missing is in fact in the kit but has to be made by the modeller.
If you wish to modify your kit in any way from that originally supplied we are able to supply the parts and fittings as an extra.

Model ship building is a rewarding and creative hobby. Whether you’re building a model for the first time or you’re an experienced modeller, you’ll find a kit here that will
bring you many hours of enjoyment. We have high quality kits that everyone can afford. Our kits are imported from Italy and we manufacture our very own kits relevant
to Australian colonial maritime history.
We have identified a number of kits that would be suitable if you are building a model kit for the first time. These are identified as Skill Level 1 & 2. Also we have a few
models that would be suitable for a 12 + years old child with adult guidance which are identified as Skill Level 1. All our kits have been categorised under Skill Levels.
These levels are explained below.
All our kits come with all timbers, fittings, plans and instructions to complete the model. Also all our model ship kits have two layers of planking (double planked) except
where identified.
Skill Levels
We have divided all our kits into six Skill Levels. These levels are described below. All Skill Levels require the modeller to be able to follow written instructions and
to read and interpret plans & drawings.
The Skill Levels are:
Skill Level 1 (SL1) kits can be built without prior model building experience, using simple hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 1 kits require cutting & fitting of timbers.
Kits in this skill level are suitable for a 12+ year old child to build with adult guidance.
Skill Level 2 (SL2) kits require slightly more skill and some prior experience using hand tools. Some parts in Skill Level 2 kits require cutting, fitting and shaping of timber pieces.
Skill Level 3 (SL3) kits are intended for the person having some prior experience building wooden model kits. Skill Level 3 kits contain parts that require cutting, fitting,
shaping and fabricating wooden and possibly metal parts.
Skill Level 4 (SL4) kits are intended for the experienced modeller. Before building a Skill Level 4 kit it is recommended the modeller construct a Skill Level 3 kit.
Skill Level 5 (SL5) kits are for the experienced period model ship builder.
Skill Level 6 (SL6) kits are for the expert period model ship builder.
The three most important characteristics for a successful modeller are patience, patience and yet more patience. Before cutting or gluing anything give a lot of thought to
the task at hand, re-read the
instructions, re-examine and interpret the plans. If in doubt contact us for assistance, sometimes just talking with another modeller
can help clarify the issue at hand.

COLONIAL BRIG PERSEVERANCE 1807 - Standard
The Colonial Brig Perseverance was owned by Robert Campbell, a noted Sydney
merchant of the time. Campbell launched his first ship the Perseverance, a 136 ton
brig, at the site of Australia‟s first shipbuilding yards in 1807.
In 1810, the Perseverance was fitted out for a trip to the southern oceans on which
the ships Captain Frederick Hasselborough discovered two new sealing grounds,
Campbell Island which he named after his employer, and Macquaire Island, named
after the Governor of New South Wales at the time.
Sadly on his return voyage to Campbell Island, Captain Hasselborough, drowned
when his jollyboat capsized in Perseverance Harbour, Campbell Island, 4th
November 1810.
The last voyage of the Perseverance began on the 7th September 1828, when she
departed Sydney headed to New Zealand. In October 1828 she was wrecked on
Campbell Island. The Perseverance, was employed in the Southern New Zealand

Paddle steamers formed a vital part in opening up the inland of Australia. The inland

The largest boat of the HMS Sirius was the longboat. The primary propulsion of the
longboat was oar power. A pair of men would sit abreast on a single thwart, one man
pulling a starboard oar, the other the port (or larboard) oar. The main duty of the
longboat was to carrying dispatches or transporting the officers to and from shore.
The HMS Sirius Longboat would have been used to transport Captain Arthur Phillip
ashore in Sydney Cove to raise the Union Jack and claim eastern Australia for Britain
on the 26 January 1788.
The HMS Sirius Longboat was also equipped with a collapsible sailing rig making her

At the beginning of the 1960s Nando Dell’Orto, the famous motor-boat racer, decided
to put a 12 cylinder Ferrari engine on a 3 point hull prepared by the Cantieri Timossi
shipyard. The hull was designed for inboard races (class 800 kgs). The engine was
prepared by Rinaldo Tinarelli, who was known as “the wizard” , the structure of the
hull was made of wooden joists covered with marine plywood. The engine fairing and
the stern fin, both colored in Ferrari red and with Ferrari markings, became a symbol

This model represents a merchant ship, armed as a schooner, built at the beginning of
the last century and mainly used as a collier. The Hunter was firstly owned by the British
Merchant Navy. Then the Royal Navy took it over for its sailing qualities especially fit for the
North Seas and decided to transform it into a Q-ship. When war broke out it was equipped
with false structures that concealed its deckweaponry. This structure could be easily removed
and the hidden deck guns could be used to fire against the enemy, especially submarines.

Robert E. LEE - River Steamboat 1870
The first highways in America were the great rivers, which permitted the growth of
commerce and transport. The advent of steam permitted the upstream navigation
on rivers. The search for speed inspired marvellous competitions. One of the most
famous races is that between Natchez and Robert E. Lee, held in 1870 between New
Orleans and Saint Louis. After 750 miles of water the Robert E. Lee won the race,
covering the distance in 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes. Solid hull kit.

This ship was used by the U.S coast guard. It was an armed schooner and it featured

In 1609, Captain Henry Hudson aboard the Half Moon was trying to find a North
west passage to Asia when he discovered a bay into which a river 500km long
drained. After sailing up the river, Hudson took possession in the name of the Dutch
government, baptising it the North or Maurice River in honour of the Prince Nassau.

HMS GREYHOUND - 20 Gun Frigate 1720
The Greyhound was a frigate with 20 cannons, launched from the Deptford shipyard
on February 13, 1720. Little is known of its seafaring history, it seems that together
with other very similar ships, it was used in the Mediterranean to fight the pirates that
plagued the coasts. The Greyhound was very elegant, refined and soberly decorated.

This model, is based upon drawings of an original example conserved in a famous
French museum, reproduces an unusual Mediterranean sailing ship of the mid 18th

The Mirage, is a true reproduction to scale of a first-class admiral ship, armed with
84 guns, belonging to the French navy in the time of Louis XIV. The Mirage was
built during a period in which even some essentially sea-going characteristics of the
men-of-war were sacrificed to the exigencies of aesthetics. This resulted in a tight
rivalry between architects, artists and woodworking masters to apply decorations
and trimmings, the masters of the ship, once arrived in the open sea, hurried to
remove to make their ship easier to handle.

WASA - Gun Deck Section
The Wasa, a 64-gun royal Swedish vessel, sunk in Stockholm harbor the same day
it was launched, due it is said, to a violent gust of wind. The hull, badly sailed, titled
frighteningly and water gushed through the open portholes. The vessel quickly sunk
to peak, reaching a depth of 35 meters. It was on 10 August 1628. Construction
of the ship started in 1625, under the supervision of the Dutch architect, Henrik
Hybertson.

underlying battery deck; besides the hull structure, particular care has been paid to
the cannon and gun carriage, and to the historically documented reconstruction of

American Civil War. This term is generally used to indicate smaller vessels used for the
rapid transport of precious, perishable goods long the Atlantic coast, and in operations
of support and provisions to the larger fleet. The common feature of these vessels was
the sails, which besides high speed, guaranteed a discrete possibility of maneuvers,
even with rough seas.

TOULONNAISE - Armed Merchant Schooner
Launched in Toulon in August 1823, the Toulonnaise served in the Spanish War under
Captain Joursin, was stationed at Barcelona and then sailed to Cadiz where it took
part in the bombardment of the port. In 1832 it was completely overhauled at Brest
and parts of the internal and external gunwales, the waterways and the planking of
the bridge were replaced and the entire poop deck superstructure was redone.
SIRENE - 18th Century French Frigate
This 30 gun French frigate is famous because of its designer, the well-known naval

The Prins Willem was probably the largest square stern ship of the fleet of the
Dutch East India Company. Fitted out at Middleburg in 1649-1650, the Prince
William was subsequently modified for use as a warship. In addition to demolishing
the forecastle and the stern bulkhead, 6 firing ports were added, three on each side.

AJAX - English Frigate 1765
Launched in Plymouth in 1765, Ajax was armed and supplied five years later, when it sailed
for its first trip to North America In 1786, during a winter mission in Atlantic, it ran into a severe
storm that seriously damaged it. The storm lasted three days but with some temporary repairs,
it managed to reach Scotland after a journey lasting forty five days. Within a month, some
major repairs were carried out and it set sail to Plymouth.
Ajax sailed for the next twelve years but was disarmed and abandoned in the Plymouth navy
yards. However, in 1801, the Admiralty was keen to expand its fleet and decided to utilize again
some disarmed ships like the Ajax. At the end of 1802 the ship sailed with the Mediterranean
fleet and participated in the Toulon siege with other English ships, amongst which was the
famous HMS Victory, commanded by Admiral Nelson. On 21st October 1805 Ajax participated in

The term ‘schifetto’ comes from the word “skiff” that means lance boat. The
schifetto belongs to the generic category of the “gullets”, very wide spread over the

The Falmouth was launched in Blackwall, England in 1752. It was the first trading vessel of
the English India Companies and showed a close resemblance to a warship in sail plan and
rigging, with the most up to date reef points to her topsails The ship was equipped with a large
amount of artillery, unusual for the trading vessels of that period. In that she was run along the

Prior to 1684, ‘Derfflinger’ was named ‘Wolkensaule’. It was purchased in Danzica
in January 1681 by Benjamin Raule and was used during the war against Spain
(May1681) declared by Prince William Frederick. It was 110 feet long and 23 feet wide;
it was armed with 3 – 16 cannons and crewed by about twenty men. From 1686 –
1693 the felucca sailed the Western Africa and India routes. The ‘Friedrich Wilhelm Zu
Pferde’ had been its escort as well as the ‘Hoffnung’ during the trips up the Western
Africa coast and up to the Shetland Islands.

Built in England in 1834, Gulnara is a perfect example of the transition from sail to
steam, making this model an interesting and unusual subject. She was bought by the
Sardinian Navy for escort and mail duties. The Gulnara was fitted with an oscillating
steam engine made by the company Fawcett & Preston, Liverpool. When under sail,
a section of the paddles could be folded back to reduce resistance. With her slim
and elegant hull, interesting superstructure complete with boiler and high stack, and

HMS BOUNTY – Armed Transport 1787
The name of the Bounty, frigate of the British Navy, is indissolubly tied to its captain’s Bligh and to
vicissitudes which caused the crew to mutiny. Christian Fletcher, the boatswain, took command
of the ship and forced Bligh to embark on a life-boat with 18 still faithful men. After a dangerous
navigation for more than 4000 miles, Bligh reached the isle of Timor and afterwards England.
The Bounty went to Pitcairn Isle where Fletcher and the remaining men settled. Only 20 years
later the group landed in Tahiti was captured and tried by the English Court-martial. Only three
seamen where condemned, while the others were acquitted.

James Cook, the great discoverer of the Pacific region, was handed over the
command of a scientific exploration trip to the South Pacific in 1768. The ship to
be used for this project was the Endeavour, Its solid structure made it extremely
seaworthy. The Endeavour left Plymouth with direction of Cape Horn and reached its
port of destination, Tahiti in April 1769.

HALIFAX - British colonial schooner 1774
Born as packet-boat, Halifax was purchased in1768 by the Royal Navy and transformed at Portsmouth
into a typical colonial schooner of the time. These alterations included raising the cabin platform to obtain
more storage space below, elevating the bulwarks with openings for the 6 guns and building a new railing
with 6 culverins. The outer changes made to the hull as well as to masting and rigging altered deeply

of this ship was short because it was captured by the English on 17th June 1778 during a battle,
between the frigate La Belle Poule and the frigate Arethusa. The destiny of the ship after it was
captured by the English is not widely known. Was it taken back by the French in 1782 as stated by
some authors? Or was it captured by the Americans off Terranova in 1780?

L’ORENOQUE - French Steam and Paddle Frigate
L’Orenoque was one of the first French frigates with mixed propulsion, sail, built
in 1848. She displaced 2,568 tons. Although she was provided with a mechanical
propulsion advanced in concept, she kept the typical masting of the frigates of that
time. Scarcely armed, she was mainly used to transport troops. The richness of
the superstructures, reproduced with refined performance and faithful scale, the
characteristic paddle-wheels and the classic masting give the model.

RATTLESNAKE - 20 guns Privateer Ship
The privateer ship Rattlesnake was built at Plymouth, Massachusetts, around 1779, allegedly to
designs by John Peck. At various times it carried from 14 to 20 guns and its complement consisted
of 85 men. It was captured off the American coasts in 1781 by the British 44-gun ship Assurance.
SAO MIGUEL - 16th Century Carrack
Portuguese merchant ships like the Caracca Atlantica played a vital part in the Age
of Exploration. They were full rigged to run before prevailing winds, large enough to
hold precious cargoes of spices, and armed for protection against hostile natives and
greedy pirates. When Magellan sailed around the world, his entire fleet consisted of
these vessels, known as carracks.
It was taken to England, where it was renamed Cormorant and its lines were redrawn. With its
reduced dead rise and its very sharp fore lines the Rattlesnake must have been very fast. It had a
detached forecastle and quarterdeck, linked by removable gangways, unshipped during the battles.

The Valiant is based on a typical 12 gun English brig of the 18th Century.
The HMS Victory was Nelsons Flagship, on which he was killed at Trafalgar. The
battle of Trafalgar was one of the most famous battles in history, bitterly fought on the
21st October 1805, between English and French-Spanish fleets. Begun in 1759 and
launched in 1765, she was subjected to several rebuilding’s before arriving at Trafalgar. The Victory once again took to the sea on 14th January 1922, to Portsmouth

The yacht America was a 19th century racing yacht which gave its name to the
international sailing trophy it first won: the America’s Cup. Designed by George Steers
and built in William Brown’s shipyard in 1851. Its name is still the most important and

over 20 minutes the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 53 mile regatta around the Isle of Wight.

ROYAL LOUIS - First Rate French Vessel 1780
The Royal Louis was a 3 deck vessel with 120 guns. Its captain was a Squadron
Admiral. It was one of the most powerful first rank vessels belonging to the French
Royal Navy at the time. Our model represents the Royal Louis according to the plans
of 1779, when it was admiral ship of the blue and white Squadron, being part of the
American Squadron, also called Earl Estaing’s. Our kit is particularly rich in accessories
and decorations. Whoever knows how complex are the deck’s superstructures of
this ship, can easily understand the problems we had to solve in order not to alter
the real image. The several molten decorations of the transom are made precious
by veneer insertions of precious wood. Thanks to the particular structure of the ship,
the reproduction accuracy is such that, through a window of the stern balconies, it is
possible to catch a glimpse of the complete inside deck’s dressing.

Friesland was a second rank vessel with 80 guns built around 1663, part of the great
fleet of the United Provinces of Holland, consisting of 1700 units. In 1672, sided by 77

it took part in the battle of Solebay with the allied Anglo-French forces.

HMS SURPRISE - 18th Century British Frigate
Originally a French corvette named L’Unite and armed with 24 nine pound long
guns, she was designed by M. Forfait and was built at Le Havre. Captured in 1796
by HMS Inconstant, L’Unite was rechristened HMS Surprise and converted by the
British into a 28-gun sixth-rate, carrying 24 32-pound carronades on her main deck,
eight more of the same on her quarter deck and forecastle, as well as 4 six-pound
long guns as chasers.
She gained fame for the cutting-out expedition in 1799 of HMS Hermione
Hermione’s crew had mutinied, and had sailed her into Spanish possession in
Puerto Cabello. Captain Edward Hamilton of the Surprise led a boarding party to
retake the Hermione from the mutineers and, after a sharp action, sailed her out
of danger under Spanish gunfire back into British control. She was sold out of the
Service in 1802.

AMERGIO VESPUCCI - Italian Sail Training Ship: Standard
This model is an exact reproduction of a 10 meters long armed launch, which was used by
the different navies during the 19th century. These launches were armed with naval guns
of different calibre and type; in the bow section a cannon or carronade was installed while
in the stern two more light, small cannons were placed to be aimed by hand. Usually, these
boats were employed in coastal patrols or in escort services but, also demonstrated their
wartime capacity in surprise actions attacking craft in difficulty. Due to their remarkable
manoeuvrability, they were also in great numbers employed during landing actions, preceding

The Astrolabe was a converted fluyt of the French Navy. She departed Brest on 1
August 1785 under Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle, along with the Boussole under

HMS BOUNTY - Armed Transport 1787
The name of the Bounty, frigate of the British Navy, is indissolubly tied to its
captain’s Bligh and to vicissitudes which caused the crew to mutiny. Christian
Fletcher, the boatswain, took command of the ship and forced Bligh to embark on
a life-boat with 18 still faithful men.
After a dangerous navigation for more than 4000 miles, Bligh reached the isle of
Timor and afterwards England. The Bounty went to Pitcairn Isle where Fletcher
and the remaining men settled. Only 20 years later the group landed in Tahiti
was captured and tried by the English Court-martial. Only three seamen where
condemned, while the others were acquitted.

A square topsail American schooner, the Lynx was launched from the Baltimore dockyards in the

Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, biologist Thor Heyerdahl suspected that the South

THERMOPYLAE - Tea Clipper 1868
The Thermopylae was an extreme composite clipper ship built in 1868 by Walter Hood & Co of
Aberdeen. She was rigged with royal sails, single top-gallant and double top-sails. Thermopylae
was designed for the China tea trade, and set speed records on her maiden voyage to Melbourne
- 63 days, still the fastest trip under sail. In 1872 she raced the clipper Cutty Sark from Shanghai
back to London and won by seven days after Cutty Sark lost her rudder. In 1895 she was sold to
Portugal and used as a naval training ship. The Portuguese Navy torpedoed her at sea in 1906.

HMS Victory stands today as the world’s oldest commissioned warship. The
Victory has seen over 220 years of almost continuous naval service. Best known

VICTORY LAUNCH - 34ft Lifeboat
The HMS Victory, is the name of Nelsons Flagship, on which he was killed at Trafalgar.
The battle of Trafalgar was one of the most famous battles in history, bitterly fought on
the 21st October 1805, between English and French-Spanish fleets. Begun in 1759 and
launched in 1765, she was subjected to several rebuilding’s before arriving at Trafalgar.
Having returned rather badly mauled to the same dock at Chatham where she had
been constructed. The Victory once again took to the sea on 14th January 1922, to

Launched on October 21, 1797, the USS Constitution has won every battle she’s
ever fought - over 40 of them! She earned her nickname “Old Ironsides” after
a sailor saw a cannonball bounce off her hull. Resting in Boston Harbor, she’s

restorations during her career. A major restoration between 1993 and 1997

AMERIGO VESPUCCI - Italian Training Ship - Deluxe
Amerigo Vespucci a 3 mast fully rigged sailing ship is an exact scale model of the
famous school ship of the Italy. She was launched in 1931 at the Navy`s ship yards
of Castellammare di Staia Naples, and carried out many voyages before World War
II. The period of the war was the only time the ship has not been active. The elegant,
three-masted full rigger serves as the training vessel of the Italian Naval Academy.
This is a larger scale model, with much more detail with brass and gilded fittings and
greater detail due to her larger scale.

CUTTY SARK - Tea Clipper 1869
Built in 1869 at Dumbarton in Scotland, by the firm of Scott & Linton, for Captain
John “Jock” “White Hat” Willis, and launched November 23 of that year. The Cutty
Sark was destined for the China tea trade, at that time an intensely competitive race
across the globe from China to London, with immense profits to the ship to arrive
with the first tea of the year. In the most famous race, against Thermopylae in 1872,
both ships left Shanghai together on June 18, but two weeks later Cutty Sark lost
her rudder after passing through the Sunda Strait, and arrived in London on October
18, a week after Thermopylae, for a total passage of 122 days. Her legendary
reputation is supported by the fact that her captain chose to continue this race with an
improvised rudder instead of putting into port for a replacement, yet was only beaten
by one week. The Cutty Sark was then used in the Australian wool trade. Under the
command of the respected Captain Richard Woodget, she did very well, posting
Australia-to-England times of as little as 67 days. She was said to have been the
fastest of any ship of her size. She is now in dry-dock at Greenwich.

SAN FELIPE - Spanish 104 Gun Man of War
The San Felipe, launched in 1690, was one of the most beautiful Spanish galleons
of the XVII century. She was a lead ship of the famous Spanish Armada. The San
Felipe displaced more than 1000 tons and was armed with 104 guns, enabling her
to take on the most formidable ships in the French and British navies. The San
Felipe’s role in the war against the British and French was to help protect Spanish
settlements and harbors, to transport treasures, and to safeguard the long and
hazardous passage back to Spanish ports. In 1705, she participated in a furious
and heroic battle between 12 Spanish ships and 35 British ships. After 24 hours of
battle, she was captured by an English ship, but was so badly damaged that she
could not be salvaged as a prize. She went down to the bottom of the ocean with
several tons of gold.

SOLEIL ROYALE - 104 Gun Ship of the Line
The Soleil Royale (Royal Sun) was a French 104-gun ship of the line, flagship of
Admiral Tourville. She was built in Brest between 1669 and 1671 by engineer Laurent
Hubac, and commissioned as the flagship of the escadre du Po-nant (squadron of
the Ponant). She was said to be a very good sailing ship and her decorations were
amongst the most beautiful and elaborate of all baroque flagships. The emblem of the
“sun” had been chosen by Louis XIV as his personal symbol.
The battle of Barfleur began on 19th May 1692 and lasted for almost two days.
Having been badly damaged she disengaged together with three others and was
systematically destroyed by cannon shot and fire by the Anglo/Dutch fleet. It was
reported that her destroyers were ashamed to be a part of her destruction.

SOVEREIGN OF SEAS - 100 Gun First Rate Ship of the Line
A 17th century British Royal Navy first rate ship of the line of 100 guns. Launched at
Woolwich dockyard on October 13, 1637. She was the most extravagantly decorated
warship in the Royal Navy, completely adorned from stern to bow with gilded carvings
against a black background. At the time she was the most powerfully armed ship in the
world. Until 1655 she was also exceptionally large for an English vessel.
Sovereign became leaky and defective with age during the reign of William III, and was
laid up at Chatham, ignominiously ending her days by being burnt to the water line as a
result of having been set on fire either by accident, negligence or design.

CAZADOR - Spanish Xebec
These picturesque and beautiful ships resembled the galleys in terms of their
raised quarter-decks, although they were much easier to work, a much appreciated
characteristic in the naval battles of the period, where they were involved in
numerous daring actions. The xebecs played a decisive role as auxiliaries to fleets
on missions of exploration, discovery, lookout and mail; specifically during the
Algerian landings and the second siege of Gibraltar.
APOSTOL FELIPE - Spanish Galleon
The Apostol Felipe was one of the six galleons built by Martin de Arana for King Felipe IV.
It formed part of the “Silver Galleons”. This kind of galleon was used for transporting goods

and treasures in the “Race for the Indies”. Its first voyage as a member of the galleon
fleet was made in 1629, transporting treasures to Spain. It was an Admiral vessel of the
Guardian Armada until 1633. It took part in the war of Brazil to recuperate Pernambuco and
transported troops and money to Flanders, taking part in the battle of Dunas.

Originally a merchant brigantine it was transformed when it got into the hands of the
corsairs, and fitted out with 16 cannons and 4 falconets, which all helped them to carry out

practiced with the permission of the state, giving them carte blanche for piracy.
The 19th and early 20th centuries saw the greatest flow of navel transport between Spain

with them. The Aurora is a good example of a brig. This kind of vessel was widely used for
travel to the Americas as her rigging provided the best results in conditions of constant wind.

DIANA - Frigate 1792
The frigate Diana was launched on the 10th of March 1792. It formed part of the series of
frigates known as “Mahonesas”, as they had been built in the city of Mahón. Thanks to its
design, it could sail faster than its predecessors. It took part in the war against France along the
Catalan coast although, during the war of Independence, its base was in Cadiz. As a member
of the naval forces of Havana, it took part in battles against the corsairs in the Antilles and made
various trips across the Atlantic. It was broken up in 1833 in the naval shipyard of Cartagena.

LA CANDELARIA - Bomb Vessel
The Candelaria is a Mediterranean bomb vessel, the size of a brig but broader and with
two masts: the main mast is positioned almost in the centre with a round rig and the small
mizzen mast has a gaffsail. Between the main mast and the forecastle are the mortars.
The Candelaria was designed and built to work as a floating battery when blockading
ports or during sieges of sea forts.

DOS AMIGOS - Brigantine Schooner 1830
She was a slaver, one of the famous early 19th century Baltimore clippers. She was low-slung and
fast, double-masted, small and agile, painted black to make it easier to hide herself off the African
coast after slaving had been abolished. Her hull was modified, with space below decks to bring the
slaves from Africa to Cuba for the sugar plantations. Her last voyage as a slaver was in 1830, sailing
out of the port of Havana on 13th July, with a crew of 34 and armed with a single carronade, 16
rifles and 15 pistols. She was captured by the British brig HMS Black Joke, with 567 African captives
aboard. She was then put up for auction and purchased by the Commodore of the British Anti-Slavery
Squadron, Jonathan Hayes, who converted into an interception ship and named her Fair Rosamond.
She patrolled the seas around Cuba until she was withdrawn from service in 1843.

MISSISSIPPI - Paddle Steamer
These legendary riverboats sailed the Mississippi throughout the 19th century, following a route
that passed through the most emblematic cities along the river’s banks, from its origins in Lake
Itasca, Minnesota, to the mouth of the river, down in New Orleans. The main characteristic
of these delightful wooden boats were the great, steam engine powered paddle-wheels. The
shallow draft of these fine boats allowed them to navigate all but the smallest of the main rivers.

GORCH FOCK - German Sail Training Ship
The present day Gorch Fock is the cadet training ship of the German Navy.
She was built at the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Hamburg, based on the plans for the previous
version, built in 1933. She was launched on 23rd August 1958 and is based at the port of the city
of Kiel.
She regularly participates in events organised by the Sail Training Association.

The Montañés represents the maximum level of perfection achieved by Spanish naval
architecture, when Spanish ships-of-the-line were a match for those of any navy in the world.
The figurehead of this ship is not the royal lion but a montañes (highlander), in gratitude for the
financial contribution towards her construction made by the people of the mountains. She was
launched in Ferrol on 14th May 1794. It is said that she was an extraordinary vessel, whether
sailing close to the wind, running free or with a following wind, and that, more than any other
ship, she kept her batteries out of the water. She was engaged in a number of battles, including
Trafalgar, where she mounted 76 guns and 4 carronades with mortars, located on her quarter
deck. On 6th March 1810, in a violent storm, she sank off the Bay of Cadiz. Includes nine plan
drawings and clearly written instructions, accompanied by corresponding colour photos.

1580. It was the flagship of the Spanish Armada. On 22nd March 1588, Alonso Perez

ensign on the galleon’s mainmast. This was one of the few ships that managed to escape
the storms and the English fleet’s guns.

This galleon is a direct descendant of the “caracks”, large, distinguished galleons,

as merchantmen they were heavily armed, for defence against pirates and other enemies,

were the result of accumulated experiences on the European Atlantic front and their

LE RENARD - French Corsair Cutter 1812
Experienced and adventurous sailor Robert Surcouf commissioned “Le Renard”
in 1812. It is a 70 ton cutter, armed with 10 carronades and 4 guns. The crew
consisted of 46 men. On the 9th of September 1813, Le Renard victoriously led the
last corsair combat. The ship was put to chase by the English ship “Alphea”, better
armed with 16 guns and a first rate crew of 80 officers and men. The ensuing action
included a nigh engagement.

La Recouvrance is a magnificent trisail frigate built on the plans of the Iris (1817) by
the naval architect Hubert. After plying against the slave trade from Senegal, she
cruised to Antilles and Brazil. Originally fitted out to a remarkable level at Rochefort
in 1829, she ended her career in 1844 at Toulon.
In the last quarter of the 18th century, privateers were generally small fast merchant
vessels. Carrying a large area of sail and highly armed with small calibre guns,
unlike “pirate” ships, these vessels flew their national flag.

SINAGOT – Oyster Lugger 1943
The French name for this type of boat is sinagot, which literally means
‘inhabitant of Sene’, a small village on the Morbihan Gulf in south-west
Brittany. Earlier this century, approximately 300 of these small family
dayboats fished for oysters in this inland sea, famous for its unique tidal
regime, out into Quiberon Bay. Some remained in service up until the
1960s. On traditional holidays, the sinagots pitted themselves in hardfought regattas.

These smacks trawled off Saint-Brieuc, Saint-Malo, Granville, and Cancale and
were unique to the English Channel. Once the sails were raised, only 2 or 3
men were needed to manoeuvre the boat. Once a year, forming what was called
the ‘caravan’, the smacks went out to dredge for oysters on the Grand Banks
off Cancale and Granville. The last of the Cancale smacks disappeared off the
French Atlantic coast around 1950.

sea-keeping properties. Marie Adelaide is a fine example of this class of craft. When
fishing for herring, the boat drifted with it nets secured forward. Nets were hauled
over rollers, using a ten-bar capstan. The knock-down catch boxes on the deck were
designed to receive the herring as fishing progressed, before the catch was prepared
and sent below.

ST GILDAS - Groix Tuna Boat 1908
The Saint Gildas is the Dundee De Groix type boat manned for tuna fishing. In 1892,
a shipowner from the Sables d’Olonne modified the classical form of fishing vessel by
taking inspiration from lines of racing yachts. From this was born the Saint Gildas. A 60
ton boat, with ample sail, 10 to 12 man crew, it fishes tuna on the line with long poles or
‘tangons’ rigged with 7 lines linked together to make it possible to lift together without
moving the spars lowered on each side in the fishing position.

HM BOMB VESSEL GRANADO - 1742
The Bomb Vessel Granado was ordered on 14th September 1741 and the contract
was given to the Ipswich shipbuilder John Barnard. Launched on 22nd June 1742.
Her construction work was overseen by the great Navel surveyor and architect
Thomas Slade who later designed Nelson’s Victory. Granado’s lines (and very
uncommon carving work for such a vessel) suggest she was originally intended as
a sloop. For the first 14 years of her operational career, Granado was indeed fitted
out as a sloop, not a bomb vessel.
From 1745 to 1748 Granado was mainly employed off the East coast of England
intercepting smugglers and privateers. With the impending arrival of The Seven

HMS FLY - Swan Class 1776
The H.M.S. Fly was the fifth of the Swan Class of ship rigged sloop, of 25 vessels
built from 1766 to 1780. Fly, as with the entire Swan class was de-signed by
Williams and her construction was ordered by the Admiralty on 1st August 1775 to
be built at Sheerness Dockyard. The keel was laid in January 1776 and launched
on 14th September 1776. H.M.S. Fly was commissioned mainly for convoy escort
duty and dispatch duty. She did capture a French privateer, Le Gleneur, off Portland
after a long chase. In 1800 she captured another French privateer, the Cutter
Trompeur off La Hague. Fly continued convoy duties until she foundered and was
lost off Newfound-land during 1802.
The Swan class were unusually attractive for the class of vessel, with not only very
sleek hull lines but also the unusual amount of decorations for the size of vessel.
The original plans of the Fly still exist, and on these plans the kit is drawn.

Hannah - US Schooner 1775
During the American Revolution the British Royal Navy blocked all ports to stop all possible vessels bringing
supplies to the Continental Army. General G.Washington decided to prepare what later become U.S Navy, in order
to overcome these blockades. The first ship of his Navy was the Hannah, a fishing schooner of 78 tons launched in
1760. Armed with 4 lbs cannons, was given to Captain Nicholas Broughton, who immediately took command of it.
She continued to fight tenaciously for freedom until the end of the war. A beautiful glass bottle is included in each kit.

The Mutiny on the Bounty was a mutiny aboard a British Royal Navy ship in 1789
that has been made famous by several books and films. The mutiny was led by
Fletcher Christian against the captain, William Bligh. Bligh was then cast adrift in a

In June 1831, the HMS Beagle set sail from England under the command of
Commander Robert Fitz Roy on a 4 year surveying mission. Accompanying Fitz Roy on
this voyage was 22 year-old Charles Darwin.
After three years of surveying the South American coast, the HMS Beagle reached San
Cristobal (Chatham) in Septem-ber 1835. The Beagle spent 5 weeks in the Galapagos
care-fully charting the archipelago. In the meantime, Darwin made careful observations
about both the geology and biology of the islands. Darwin was particularly struck by
the”differences between the inhabitants of the different islands”.

Il LEUDO
The origin of the Leudo are rather uncertain. According to suppositions probably
masts inclined towards the prow with lateen sails. It should afterwards have lost the
foremast, replaced by a bowsprit with jibs, making the manoeuvres easier. The hull
has a characteristic egg shape with a very accentuated bending weather conditions,
unbearable even for stronger hulls. It was a cargo concerns – hard-ware – agricultural
tools – hand-manufactured goods and cloths in the Mediterranean Sea.

Real steamboat with typical paddle-wheel sailing along the Mississippi river. It

Third ship of the Columbus expedition, Pinta was a square sail caravel. The Pinta

Rainbow J class defender of the America’s Cup in 1934. In spite of the fact that
the Rainbow was built with the latest technology in ship building, the boat had
difficulties trying to beat the challenging Endeavour, which proved to be very fast
and dominated the first two races. It was one of the most dramatic challenges of
the America’s Cup history.
