Welcome to...
Bienvenue
O
TASTE
Prince Edward County is, and will always
be a friendly, quiet and rural community
characterized by its people, bursting
creative talent and understated realism.
We’re contemporary yet traditional,
artistic yet rustic, progressive yet set in
our ways and we sit in a charming and
picturesque environment of timeless
traditions, agricultural land, local foods
and wine, artisans, boutiques and soughtafter tourism experiences. We embrace
local and take so much pride in the fruits
of our labour – from that great glass of
wine, farm-to-table produce, culinary
experiences, artistic creations and a
thriving tourism industry. And yet we are
a community of contrasting personalities
and characteristics. Residents have
a warm sense of pride, authenticity
and a willingness to give back to the
community.
The County comes by its love for food
honestly. Did you know that The County
once provided the country with a third
of its canned goods? Countless family
run farms provide visitors and locals
alike with ample choice to eat local.
Fresh fruit and vegetables (including
organic), cheese, maple syrup, baked
goods, artisanal products and more can
be found at roadside stands, farms and
farmers’ markets – perfect for your table
or picnic basket. This produce also fills
the menus of our local restaurants –
look for featured seasonal ingredients
as part of revolving creative menus.
O
The County’s limestone rich soil
and climate provide a terroir that is
producing scores of award-winning
wine. Be sure to pick up a copy of the
Taste Trail – a self-guided tour route
that will lead you to many restaurants,
wineries, cideries, breweries and artisanal
food producers.
There’s something special about Prince
Edward County and it’s the interwoven
relationships between all of these
characteristics that makes it such a great
place to taste, tour, explore and unwind.
C’est en mariant toutes ces caractéristiques
que le comté de Prince Edward a tissé un
« je ne sais quoi » qui en fait un endroit
aussi attrayant pour vraiment goûter à la vie,
visiter, explorer et se détendre.

Explore these quaint villages
The County’s main hubs of Wellington,
Bloomfield and Picton are nestled along
the historic Loyalist Parkway (Highway 33)
which follows the course of the Loyalist
settlement. Not only does the Loyalist
Parkway serve as a living monument to
the Loyalist settlers, it also presents a
rich source of information for those with
interests in Heritage Tourism, Genealogy,
Canadian History and Early Canadian
Architecture.
Tour the Taste Trail to experience Prince
Edward County’s fantastic flavours!
Visit local artisan shops and farmers
markets to discover handcrafted preserves
and locally grown goodness. Pop into
a cidery, brewery, or ice-creamery for
a cold treat. From pretty Pinots to cool
Chardonnays, visit the wineries and
taste something new. Enjoy a meal at
any of the Taste Trail restaurants and
see why The County was coined as
Ontario’s gastronomic capital! By living
and breathing an artisanal way of life,
The County has redefined progress,
and we can’t wait to show you how.
#RealProgress #PECTasteTrail
and towns by foot, car or bicycle.
A one metre wide paved shoulder
has been provided for cyclists
along the length of Highway 33.
To complete your adventure be
sure to venture off the beaten
path. Whether you pedal your
own or rent a bike, cycling is
a popular and healthy way to
experience The County.
While driving the Loyalist Parkway,
experience some of Ontario’s best
boutique shopping, countless studios
and galleries, quaint inns, homegrown
B&B’s, and fabulous restaurants and cafés.
Visit one of five museums and
take a peek into The County’s
rich history. Relive the ‘Barley
Days’ of 1860-1890; Sir John A.
Macdonald’s time in Picton;
rum running; the war of 1812;
and The County’s canning
industry.

A natural habitat for birds, The County
is lucky to have regular visits from
feathered friends. Conservation Areas
and parks offer endless possibilities
for sightings. The Canadian Nature
Federation and Bird Studies Canada
designated The County as an important
global birding area (IBA) in 1998.
For more information on birding,
including Spring-time bird banding
demonstrations, and Fall Northern
Saw-whet owl banding, visit the Prince
Edward Point Bird Observatory website:

With so many talented musicians, entertainment is not hard to find in The County.
Picton’s historic Regent Theatre offers a cinema experience and live performances
throughout the year. The local repertory company, Festival Players of Prince Edward
County puts on plays throughout the summer. Music festivals, open mic nights and
local musicians frequent our restaurants and pubs.
O
O
UNWIND
The County is home to Sandbanks Provincial Park, one of Canada’s best beaches.
With the world’s largest freshwater sand bar and dune system and soft white sand
and crystal blue waters, you’ll feel like you’re at the Caribbean Sea rather than the
shores of Lake Ontario!
FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
Festival goers can look forward to The County’s top festivals and events,
including TASTE Community Grown and Maple In The County.
Visit: VisitTheCounty.ca for information on all PEC events, including The Great

Our history dates back to
the late 1700s, which is reflected
Welcome to
in the fine architecture of some of
the buildings. One of Ontario’s oldest
homes, built in 1799, is nestled in town.
Many of the original settlers were United
Empire Loyalists, and some present day
families can trace their lineage back
to those inhabitants. If history is your
thing, check out the Wellington Heritage
Museum on Main Street, open from
the Victoria Day weekend until the end
of September. The Wellington Library
has some great books and free internet
access too!
Wellington
Bienvenue à
Wellington!
... the coolest spot
when the weather is hot!
H

sur la plage.

Families come from all over to enjoy
the waterfront park featuring a community-built
playground and gazebo. We also have our own
beach with a charming boardwalk along the shore
to a lighthouse. Wellington harbour has docking
facilities with Canada Border Services, for boaters
arriving from the United States. If you feel like
spending the day on the water, there are kayaks,
boat rentals and fishing charters.
Accommodation in Wellington. You can
B
choose from cozy bed & breakfasts, country inns,
cottages, campgrounds, vacation rentals and guest
suites. Many are in renovated heritage buildings with
modern facilities and old world charm. These are in
high demand, especially in the peak season, so make
sure to book early!
E
Wellington is the place to eat. With so
much fresh local produce and several talented
chefs, you have a choice of fine dining restaurants
or family-friendly cafés where you can catch up on
the gossip. End the day relaxing in one of the village’s
bars for cocktails. If you are so inclined, you can put
together a picnic basket with tasty treats from the
grocery store or farmers’ markets and enjoy an al
fresco meal in the village park or at the beach.
N
Spend a few days tasting awardwinning wines at our growing number of
H
wineries, from the rustic chic to the ultra-modern.
Bordered by the hamlets of Rosehall and Hillier,
the area produces full-flavoured reds, delicately
balanced whites, enchanting rosés and port or
ice wine for after-dinner sipping. There’s a strong
contingent of sparkling wines, too. Our wines reflect
the terroir, the love of the land and the passion of
our winemakers.

If you want to keep active, bring your bike
and pick up a bike route map from our information
kiosk at the west end of the village. Brush up on
your swing and challenge our scenic 9-hole golf
course. You can take a NIA or yoga class to unwind,
or go for a walk on the Millennium Trail and do some
birdwatching to get in touch with nature.

If you decide to stay awhile,
the village and surrounding area offers
a host of businesses and services.
There is a bank, post office, pharmacy
and medical and dental clinics. We
have manufacturing and insurance
companies, convenience, furniture
and hardware stores, antiques and
collectibles shops, design, marketing
and web services. If you find that you
love it here, we have many realtors to
help you find a new home, or builders
who can build you one! And if you want
to start your own business here, make
sure to contact the Wellington & District
Business Association to help you get
connected. discoverwellington.ca
K
... the only basic necessity is a smile...
Relax and pamper yourself
while you’re here. Get a massage
K
or reiki treatment to relax, or visit the
salon for a new style. Our chiropractor
or physiotherapist can help to keep you
in top condition. Go for a walk through
the lavender fields and pick up some
essential oils for a hot soak in the tub.
Wellington is home to many
artists and artisans. Browse the
studios of painters, potters, a jeweller,
glass blower and fibre artist, all within
walking distance of each other.
There’s also a gallery on Main Street
featuring the work of many County
artists. Studios are visited year round,
but especially during the annual Studio
Tour in September. This year, Wellington
will host the first Spring Art Walk on
May 23 and 24.
N
Check out our calendar of
events! March starts off the roster
sweetly with Maple in the County and
Countylicious. The activities and events
continue through the spring and
summer, with many of them right here
in Wellington. You can catch a hockey
game of the hometown Wellington
Dukes, or there’s public skating and an
awesome indoor walking track at the
arena. Canada Day is so big it takes
two days to celebrate, with a street
dance, fireworks on the beach, a parade,
music and vendors in the park.
Browse the Saturday Farmers’ Market,
enjoy the Lavender Festival or rekindle
your childhood at the Bubble Festival.
Listen to internationally acclaimed
musicians at the County’s Jazz Festival.
In October, Pumpkinfest features a
fun-filled parade along Wellington Main
Street, followed by a great pumpkin
weigh-off. Sing for your libation at
Wassail, and indulge in exceptional
cuisine during Fall Countylicious.
H
H
End the year with family-fun at Wellington’s
Who-Ville Christmas in the Village with
a visit from Santa, and the Busy Hands
Craft Show — just the place to pick up
that special one-of-a-kind gift.
A great place to live. Where time
stands still as you take in the beauty that
surrounds you, where the past meets the
present, and where the future is bright.
Where the locals are friendly and helpful,
where there is only one traffic light, and
the only basic necessity is a smile.

... small is beautiful
J
Discover a little village that has a big
place in people’s hearts. Ideally situated
in the geographic centre of Prince
Edward County, Bloomfield is a feast for
the senses. Admire superb examples of
Loyalist architecture, carefully tended
grounds and uniquely curated shop
displays.
Taste the passion of farm-to-table
cuisine, artisanal ice cream and craft
cocktails. Breathe in the fresh air on a
leisurely stroll or scenic cycle through
town. Relax to the chirp of migratory
birds. Feel the pride of shopkeepers,
innkeepers and artisans who put their
hearts into everything they do.

The perfect place to meet
Conveniently located in the heart of
The County, our beautiful village is
always within easy reach. It’s your ideal
home base from which to explore all
that The County has to offer, and a place
where locals and visitors alike come to
meet. Bloomfield is just 15 minutes from
the beaches of Sandbanks Provincial
Park, and halfway between Wellington
and Picton on the Loyalist Parkway.
J
J
A history of hospitality
Our village has been welcoming guests for some 200 years now. From the earliest
days of settlement, Bloomfield’s mills attracted farmers from a great distance, who
stayed overnight in hotels while their grain was being ground. Today, you can choose
from a diverse range of charming B&Bs, inns and rentals with modern amenities in
both historic and contemporary buildings. Book early!
J
An authentic farm-to-table
community
J
J
Timeless appeal
Settled by entrepreneurial farmers in the
late 1700’s, Bloomfield remains true to
its roots. There are working farms right
in the village, just behind the row of
houses lining Main Street. Chances are,
something on the menu at our delightful
restaurants and cafes came from just
down the street.
It doesn’t get more local than that!
J
28
Bloomfield has a longstanding reputation
for its charm. An 1878 description of the
town in an historical atlas is still relevant
today: “beautifully shaded avenues,
luxuriant flower gardens, and well-kept
grounds.” Not to mention the unique
architectural character of the village,
whose elegant red brick homes feature
distinctive cornice treatments and
refined trim and verandas.
J
29
Walking, cycling and scenic drives
You’ll find that Bloomfield is a very walkable village, with everything just a short stroll
away. There’s a lot to explore in the immediate surroundings too. Rent a bike or go
for a quick drive to nearby wineries, artists’ studios, farmers’ markets and more!
J
Where memories are made
J
C
Take a piece of Bloomfield home with you
In the centre of the village, you’ll find a wide variety of shops with a diverse array
of unique wares. Seeking the perfect souvenir? There’s a painting, pottery piece,
glass treasure, vintage find, or woodcraft wonder with your name on it in one of the
many antique shops, galleries and craft workshops nestled in our country lanes.
Bloomfield is a special kind of place
that lends itself to lasting memories.
Whether it’s that first vacation together,
a proposal, anniversary, family holiday
or get-together among old friends,
Bloomfield is a beautiful, historic setting
for making your own personal history.
There’s a lot to explore
in the immediate surroundings...
J
Big love for a tiny town
This little village has been quietly
winning the hearts of tourism writers,
celebrity chefs and lifestyle bloggers.
Time Inc.’s Travel + Leisure magazine
made special mention of Bloomfield
when they profiled The County as one
of the world’s 50 best places to visit in
2015. We suspect you’ll love it here too!
See you soon?

Local Recreation
Picton Harbour is a favorite stop for pleasure boaters navigating the sheltered, inland
waterway that surrounds The County. With opportunities for biking, hiking, golfing
and fishing in the summer; and skating, snowmobiling and tobogganing in the winter,
Picton is a recreational haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The County Marathon,
a Boston Qualifier, takes place each
October and draws visitors from around
the globe. In addition to local tours and
trails, nearby campgrounds including
the Sandbanks Provincial Park, help to
ensure an active County experience.
Picton’s streetscapes reflect its proud
past with many of its Main Street
buildings contributing to the Heritage
Conservation District of the downtown
core. Architectural detail adds that jene-sais-quoi to the many store fronts,
and occasional alleyways that date
back to the horse drawn carriage days
make walking Main Street an experience
in itself and a favourite past-time of
returning visitors.
How Picton Got Its Name
Born the seventh of twelve children
to Welsh parents, Thomas Picton
began his military career at the
early age of 13. After climbing
the ranks to Lieutenant General,
Picton had heroically fallen at the
Battle of Waterloo (1815) during
the Napoleonic Wars. Picton is
also remembered for his service as
military governor of Trinidad; the
tenure often described as a tyrannical
regime, so much so that he was
recalled to London to stand trial
for unlawful torture. Rev. William
Macaulay, a great admirer of Picton,
is credited with championing the use
of his name for our town. A bust of
Picton was gifted to the Picton Public
Library by the country of Wales and
has been on display at Macaulay House
since its official opening in 1981.
N
Macdonald, “a Quinte boy”
Macdonald won his first court case
in Picton’s new courthouse in 1834.
He championed the union of the
maritime and western provinces to
form a new country called Canada,
born on July 1, 1867, and the
construction of a railway across vast
distances to link the country together.
He guided the fledging country through
tumultuous times and scandals to hold
the nation and its people together.
In the early 1830’s, the village of
Hallowell, a bustling shipping port later
to become the town of Picton, was
home to a tall, brash young man named
John Alexander Macdonald. He was
the driving political force behind the
creation of a new nation, and Canada’s
first Prime Minister. N
In 2015, the 200th anniversary of his
birth, his life here as a “Quinte boy”, will
be commemorated with the unveiling
of a life-size bronze statue created by
Canadian artist Ruth Abernethy.
In 1833 at age 18, he was an apprentice
lawyer working for his relative, Lowther
Pennington Macpherson, a law practice
he would later assume. Find more information on the regional
Macdonald Heritage Trail at:
