Connections JUNE 2011 A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR THE STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS OF MINOOKA COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT #111 CONGRATULATIONS MCHS CLASS OF 2011! Members of the MCHS Class of 2011 toss their graduation caps in the air in celebration at their commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 22, 2011. Lucila Villalobos of Minooka, were recognized for earning perfect attendance throughout their four years as students at MCHS. Class officers Stephanie Engel, daughter of Tim and Donna Engel of Channahon, Michael Smith, son of David and April Smith of Channahon, Jasmine Stewart, daughter of Andre Stewart and Normal Gill of Minooka, and Ashley Dylik, daughter of Joe and Dawn Caldwell of Channahon, led their classmates in the ceremonial “moving of the tassel” at the conclusion of the ceremony, marking the end of their high school years and the beginning of their futures. The entire Minooka Community High School District #111 community congratulates these outstanding young men and women and wishes them the best in the years to come. The commencement ceremony for the Minooka Community High School Class of 2011 was held in the MCHS - Central Campus Athletic Stadium on Sunday, May 22, 2011. Andrew Moorman, son of Robert and Jody Moorman of Channahon, was named class co-valedictorian, Kelly Turner, daughter of Mark and Donna Turner of Channahon, was named class co-valedictorian, and Allison Turner, also daughter of Mark and Donna Turner of Channahon, was named class salutatorian. Both co-valedictorians and the salutatorian addressed their classmates with prepared speeches that reflected on the past four years, and that overflowed with anticipation of the years to come. Sasha Litt, daughter of Michael and Deborah Litt of Channahon, and Cesar Villalobos, son of Alberto and MCHS Announces Class of 2011 Co-Valedictorians, Salutatorian Minooka Community High School Principal Robert Williams is pleased to announce the co-valedictorians and salutatorian for the MCHS Class of 2011. Co-valedictorian Andrew Andrew Kelly Allison Moorman is the son of Moorman Turner Turner Robert and Jody Moorman of Channahon. MCHS Headlines “MCHS” continued from page 1 (one year), National Honor Society (two years), and Spanish National Honor Society (two years, one as vice-president). Andrew has also earned the following awards and recognition: Regional & State Awards/Placement in Math Team, six-time ICTM Regional Competition winner, Rube Goldberg local 1st place winner, Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award from Rochester University winner, AP Scholar, Honor Roll (four years), Illinois State Scholar, and a selection into Who’s Who Among American High School Students. He is also a four-year participant in the Appalachian Service Project and a volunteer with several service projects through Minooka United Methodist Church. During her high school career, Kelly has participated in the following school activities: National Honor Society (two years), Pit Orchestra (three years), Symphonic Band (one year), Concert Band (one year), Marching Band (four years, trumpet section leader), Pep Band (four years), Madrigal Brass (two years), Wind Ensemble (two years), Math Team (one year), Spanish National Honor Society (two years), Cheerleading (one year), Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (one year), and Grundy County Corn Festival representative (one year). Kelly has also earned the following awards and recognition: two-time Southwest Prairie Conference Honor Band selection, Fox Valley Music Festival Honor Band selection, Illinois State Scholar, AP Scholar, University of Minnesota – Gold National Scholarship, University of Minnesota – Study Abroad Freshman Scholarship, University of Minnesota – Presidential Scholarship, and University of Minnesota – College of Food, Agriculture & Natural Resource Sciences Scholarship. Kelly also volunteers at Minooka Animal Hospital and is an adoption counselor for the Humane Society. In the fall, Kelly will attend the University of Minnesota and major in animal sciences. She also plans to participate in band, dairy challenge team, dairy club, pre-veterinarian house/community, and the University’s honors program. Salutatorian Allison Turner is the daughter of Mark and Donna Turner of Channahon. During her high school career, Allison has participated in the following school activities: Concert Band (one year), Marching Band (four years, flute section leader), Pep Band (four years), Pit Orchestra (three years), Symphonic Band (one year), Wind Ensemble (one year), Grundy County Corn Festival representative (one year), Math Team (one year), National Honor Society (two years, one as Community Relations Officer), Spanish National Honor Society (two years, one as Community Relations Officer), Cheerleading (one year), and Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (one year). Allison has also earned the following awards and recognition: National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Scholar, Purdue University Presidential Scholar, Illinois State Scholar, AP Scholar, Fox Valley Music Festival Honor Band selection, and Southwest Prairie Conference Honor Band selection. Allison is also a volunteer in the Provena St. Joseph Medical Center pharmacy. In the fall, Allison will attend Purdue University, where she will major in pre-pharmacy. She also plans to participate in concert band, pharmacy student organizations, and various volunteer groups. 2 Board Members Thanked for Years of Service Larry Larson Bruce Miller A.J. Rossi Chris Balkema The Minooka Community High School District #111 Board of Education recognized four outgoing members who collectively provided thirty-seven years of service to the district. Three members, Larry Larson (24 years of service), Bruce Miller (9 years of service), and A.J. Rossi (2 years of service) did not run for re-election in the Spring 2011 election, and Chris Balkema (2 years of service) stepped down after being elected to the Grundy County Board in the Fall 2010 election. “Board of Education members give so much of their time and talent to make a difference in the education of all students, while acting in the best interests of the community,” offered Superintendent Dr. David Middleton. “Our entire district is grateful to them.” Relay Team Wins State Title The MCHS Indians had a strong showing at the 2011 IHSA Boys’ State Track and Field Championships at Eastern Illinois University on May 26-28. In the end, the 3,200-meter relay team of senior Danny Bahret, sophomore Joey Santillo, junior Dan Popek, and senior Joe McAsey captured a state title, while McAsey also finished third overall in the 800-meter run, and senior Kevin Dorenkamper placed fourth overall in the 300-meter hurdles. MCHS Headlines Journalism Team Members Earn All-State Honors Eleven Indians to Continue Athletic Careers at College The athletic and academic accomplishments of eleven Minooka Community High School student-athletes were celebrated as part of the annual Spring Athletic Signing Ceremony hosted by the MCHS Athletic Department on Wednesday, May 4. Student-athletes recognized included: Daniel Bahret University of St. Francis (Cross Country/Track), Mitchell Brozovich - Minnesota State Mankato (Football), Zachary Colvin - Bowling Green State University (Football), Bryan Dorenkamper - Lewis University (Track & Field), Kevin Dorenkamper - Lewis University (Track & Field), Kaitlin Hoy - University of St. Francis (Cross Country/ Track), Joseph McAsey - University of Illinois (Cross Country/Track), Parker Parzych - South West Minnesota State (Football), Allegra Rossi - University of St. Francis (Cross Country/Track), Douglas Sachtleben - Robert Morris College (Football), and Rebecca Sutton - Ball State University (Women’s Soccer). “Minooka Community High School is extremely proud of the accomplishments of these outstanding student-athletes,” offered MCHS Athletic Director Bob Tyrell. “Very few high school athletes have an opportunity to continue their careers at the collegiate level on scholarship. Their hard work, as well as the support they have received from their parents, coaches, and teammates, is to be commended.” The MCHS Journalism Team performed well at the IHSA State Journalism Competition on Friday, May 6. Jessica Vicini (second from left) and Ali Kunke (third from left) earned All-State honors. On Friday, May 6, the Minooka Journalism Team had two students earn All-State honors at the IHSA State Competition at Eastern Illinois University. More than 70 teams competed at state this year. Jessica Vicini, junior, won the Yearbook Layout Design Double-Page Spread competition. This was the best Minooka has ever finished in this event, and only the second journalism state champion in school history. Last year, she was third at state in the same event. Jessica is a managing editor for the school yearbook. Ali Kunke, sophomore, finished third in Yearbook Copy Writing. Ali is an academics section editor for the school yearbook. The previous week, Minooka finished fifth as a team at the Sectional Competition at Peoria Richwoods High School. At the Sectional, Jessica won her event and Ali was second. Also qualifying for state at the Sectional were senior Soozie Bahret (second place, Infographics); junior Hayley Younce (second place, Copy Editing); sophomore Elaina Bartoli (second place, Newspaper Design); juniors Holli Kirsch and Taylor Troutman (second place, Yearbook Theme Development); and sophomore Dutch Nave (third place, Headline Writing). The MCHS Journalism Team is sponsored by Ms. Laura Erion and Mr. Matt Thomas. Coaches Dan Harris and Stan Tischer will lead the group in the tournament. 3 Falvey Earns Repeat Bid to State Tennis Tournament Congratulations are extended to senior Brian Falvey for qualifying for the 2011 IHSA State Tennis Championships for the second consecutive year. Falvey, who is also a two-time Southwest Prairie Conference boys tennis champion, is now the first two-time state qualifier in school history. However, school district boundaries and postal carrier routes don’t always coincide. Therefore, everyone who resides in a postal route, that contains even a portion of the MCHS district, will receive the mailing.
