AGWSR hoops sweep North Butler
by Scott Bierle
Sports Editor
ACKLEY- Sophomores Maddie
Brandt and Nathan Karsjens booked
game-high scoring honors and led
the AGWSR girls’ and boys’ basketball teams to a sweep of North Butler here Saturday.
Brandt poured in 27 points in a
lopsided 74-33 victory for the AGWSR girls while the Cougars were
a 61-52 winner behind Karsjens’ impressive double-double of 19 points
and 18 rebounds.
BRANDT, DEFENSE SHINE
The scoring spree by Brandt
combined with a lockdown defense
earned the AGWSR girls a sixth win
against three losses.
The Cougars displayed a highoctane offensive in the first 16-minutes, racing to a 40-24 halftime lead
and then the defense took charge and
limited the visiting Bearcats to nine
second half points, including one in
the fourth.
“We have been focusing on defense over the break, especially in
the half court and it was very good.
Overall, I’m pleased with the way
we looked coming off the break. The
team had a lot of intensity,” noted
AGWSR coach Laurie Gann.
After Brandt, Rachel Frazier
scored 11 points, Megan Marlette
10 and Alana Groninga eight. Becca
Wiarda collected nine assists and
four steals, and Mel Morones had
six scoring passes. The host’s sank
nine three-point goals with five for
Brandt and two for Groninga.
AGWSR owned the 16-point
halftime cushion behind a 22-10
second quarter to build on a 18-14
lead after one period. Both outputs
of 76 points on offense and the 33 on
defense were season-bests.
North Butler, who slipped to 0-7,
were lead by Nicole Heeren’s seven
points.

COUGARS NINE-PT WINNER
An eight-point advantage in the
second period propelled the AGWSR boys. The 15-7 second turned
a three-point deficit after one quarter
into a 27-22 lead at the break. The
Cougars then took the final 16-minutes, 34-32.
“Things didn’t come easy this
being the first game after break, but
we competed, played hard and were
good enough to win a ball game,”
commented AGWSR coach Russ
Banzhaf.
Along with Karsjens, scoring
leaders for the hosts wee Mason Ei-
lderts 14 points and Jake Willems
10. Six Cougars canned three-point
goals with two each for Eilderts and
Willems, while Karsjens was one of
four with one. Eilderts added seven
rebounds and three steals, and Sully
Hofmeister dished six assists.
AGWSR won the backboard
battle, 36-23 behind Karsjens’ 18 of
which 15 were defensive.
The Cougars climbed back over
.500 with the win to stand 5-4.
