Fire Call
The New Providence Fire Department dug itself out from under a foot of snow early this week, locating and clearing 23 fire
hydrants after the big blizzard of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Departments all around the county were forced to do much
the same and towns asked property owners to assist when they
could, as snow totals left fire protection services challenged.
Overall authorities around the county indicate that the communities dealt with the snow totals without serious incident or injury.

Whink comeback year
By Rick Patrie
News Editor
ELDORA – A couple of years
ago, the Throssel family sat down
and thought about the future of
Whink Products.
The business cycle at Whink
wasn’t the most favorable at the time,
but now two years on, Steve Throssel
says things have turned around, and
everyone feels pretty good about
having decided to re-invest in Whink
for the long haul, rather than put the
resources somewhere else.
Throssel spoke as the company
is celebrating its 70th birthday, and
about to fill four staff positions,
bringing it back up to the 44 it had
employed prior to a small cutback
that couple of years ago.
Along with the new people, the
company will be installing a new
production line inside the building
site here in Eldora. The new
equipment will allow Whink to cut
the turn-around time on big orders
and in doing so accommodate the
needs of some major retailers who
are returning to the customer fold.
When the likes of Walmart want
short notice deliveries, you step up
the pace, Throssel says.
Last but not least, Throssel also
announced he will be naming a new
president of operations at the Eldora
plant.
Throssel will remain very active
in the business too, but he says the
naming of Curt Lambertsen to the
newly created senior post should
give a boost to the company and
make a down payment on the future.
Throssel says that a couple of
years ago a combination of adverse
circumstances made for a period of
introspection at Whink.
A strong competitor to Whink
had put itself up for sale and part of
its sell-off strategy was to increase
market share, even if it meant setting
unprofitable price levels.
It was not a situation which
Healthy food makes
a healthy mind
by Rick Patrie
News Editor
ELDORA – Dorothy’s Senior
Center says a mind is a terrible thing
to waste, and now there is a diet
rich in green leafy vegetables, nuts,
berries, beans, whole grains, fish,
poultry, olive oil and even a little
wine, all designed to bulk up your
mental fitness.
Interested? Stop at the senior
center on Friday February 12 at
11:30 a.m. and take part in the
informational program.
These foods are all part of the
MIND diet – a diet showing promise
in reducing the risk of developing
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Recent research conducted by
Rush University and funded by the
National Institute on Aging followed
923 individuals for almost 5 years.
What they learned was that people
who followed the MIND diet, even
moderately, had a 53% reduction in
dementia and the development of
Alzheimer’s.
Join your local meal site’s
February’s Fresh Conversations
program this month to learn more
about the MIND diet and how you
can include foods to keep your brain
www.eldoranewspapers.com
healthy and your memory sharp.
February’s Fresh Conversations
discussion will be held at the
Dorothy’s Senior Center in Eldora
on February 12 at 11:30. Local
facilitator, Lynette Miller from
NEI3A will lead the discussion.
The conversation will explore
components of the MIND diet,
including the foods listed at the
beginning of this article.
Did you know that blueberries
might be your brain’s new best
friend? Of those powerful memory
foods, blueberries have been shown
to be most beneficial. Blueberries
are packed with anthocyanins and
show promise in lowering blood
pressure and preserving memory and
reasoning skills.
Participants will learn ways to
include fresh and frozen blueberries
into their diets. An easy-prepare,
3-ingredient blueberry syrup will
be the food sample of the month.
This syrup is made of all-natural
ingredients and can be used on
pancakes, ice cream, yogurt or on
other food where a topping sauce is
desired.
(continued on page 2)
With business picking up, some new hires pending, Whink Products cleared an area in the shop
for a new packing line designed to speed up the turnaround time in deliveries to some of it biggest
retail customers. The company has logged in a big increase in sales over the last year and the new
production line is part of a decision made a couple of years ago to invest the company’s resourcs
back into the production facility here in Eldora. Company head Steve Throssel also announced recently the appointment of a new president of operations at the plant, in Curt Lambertsen. Throssel
is shown here with Shane Wood in the area being set aside for the new production line.
could be sustained forever, Throssel
says, and now the competition has
returned to pricing more realistically.
He also says that for reasons
that were never made clear, a
major national retailer who was a
big customer for Whink products,
decided to cut back on its purchases.
Again, that situation has also
reversed, and now Whink’s offerings
in Walmarts are on the rise again.
All that taken together, Throssel
says the year finished showing
revenues were up sixteen percent.
Throssel joined Whink back
in 1987 and had returned to his
hometown of Eldora in 1980. He
grew up here and graduated from
the local high school, and says with
Whink’s celebrating its 70th birthday,
he wants to start introducing some
younger people to the management

Stowe and Cook wed
Rebecca Stowe and Levi Cook
were united in holy matrimony on
Saturday, June 13, 2015, at 4 p.m. at
St Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora
with Pastor David Splett officiating.
The bride was escorted down the
aisle and given in marriage by her
father. The church was adorned
with ivory tulle pew bows, and
arrangements of peach, buttercream,
and blush heirloom garden roses in
milk glass vases.
Parents of the bride and groom
are Craig and Richelle Stowe of
Eldora, and Paul and Charlotte Cook
of Hubbard. Grandparents of the
couple are Edward and Ione Ziesman
of Eldora, Bill and Shila Stowe of
New Providence, David and Marlys
Fisher of Hubbard, and Lisle and
Margaret Cook of Hubbard.
The bride chose a lace and tulle
fit-and-flare Stella York gown
featuring an illusion lace neckline
with a fitted lace bodice and flowy
tulle skirt and train, accented with a
beaded satin ribbon sash. She wore
her mother’s veil, and carried a
vintage beaded pearl purse that was
her great grandmother’s.
The maid of honor was Emily
Cook, sister of the groom.
Bridesmaids
included
Allison
Stowe and Natalie Stowe, cousins
of the bride; Jesslyn Grothoff and
Jaelyn Daggs-Olson, friends of the
bride; and Ellie Cook, sister of the
groom. The bride’s attendants wore
blush colored, drape front sleeveless
dresses with beaded waistlines.
The flower girls were Adeline
and Laney Cook, cousins of the
groom, and Grace Lockie, cousin
of the bride. They wore champagne
colored dresses made of tulle with
rosette bodices and embellished
sashes.
The best man was Kyle Cook,
cousin of the groom. Groomsmen
UNI Fall
Dean’s
List
included Landon Brown, cousin of
the groom; Nathan Wiechmann and
Joshua Wiechmann, friends of the

Stowe, brothers of the bride. James
Lockie, cousin of the bride, served
as ring bearer. Ushers were Vince
Cook, cousin of the groom, and
Andrew Wiechmann and Matthew
Wiechmann, friends of the couple.
Jessica Kleveland, soloist and
friend of the couple, played the
guitar and sang “When I Say I Do”
by Matthew West. The congregation
joined in the closing hymn, “Go, My
Children, With My Blessing.” The
organist was Kristin Hagedon.
Lighting the candles for the
ceremony was Michael Glaser, cousin
of the bride. Megan Frohwein and
Morgan Ridout, friends of the couple,
attended the guestbook and gifts.
The couple left the church in
Grandpa Fisher’s 1940 Chevrolet
Special Deluxe Coupe. A dinner
reception and dance was held at
the New Providence Roundhouse
following the ceremony. Kyle and
Sara Lockie, cousins of the bride,
and Bill and Katie Heubner, friends
of the couple, hosted the reception.
A special table featured wedding
pictures of the couple’s parents,
grandparents and great grandparents,
honoring many decades of love.
The rehearsal dinner was hosted
on Friday evening by the groom’s
parents in the barn at the Hardin
County Farm Museum.
Levi and Rebecca are 2013
graduates of South Hardin High
School. Both are seniors at Iowa

Maintaining brainpower gets an
added boost from activity, as well.
Each year one of three persons over
the age of 65 falls. Falls are the
number one cause of brain injuries
each year in the United States.
They are also the leading cause
of injury and death among older
Americans. Practicing strength,
balance and flexibility exercises can
prevent falls. This month’s program
demonstrates exercises to address
all three.
Fresh Conversations is a free
program offered by NEI3A and
designed to promote sharing and

Farmers urged to respond to survey
DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary
of Agriculture Bill Northey today
announced that the Iowa Commercial
Horticulture Survey for Food Crops
is being mailed statewide to farmers
that raise horticulture food crops.
Farmers are asked to complete the
survey and return to the Department
by March 15, 2016.
“It has been 15 years since a similar
survey was created and sent to
producers, and much has changed
in that time. This is a rapidly
growing and very diverse sector of
Iowa’s agricultural economy, and
it is vital that we capture reliable
and current statistics. The data
gathered will provide insights and
guidance to producers, researchers,
policy makers, agricultural-related
businesses, and the public at large,”
Northey said.
Iowa
commercial
horticulture
producers that have not received a
survey by February 10th can request
one by calling 515-242-6239 or
by going online to request one at
http://www.iowaagriculture.gov/
agDiversification.asp.
The survey hopes to capture the 2015
data of commercial production of
the state’s fruit and vegetable crops
as well as that of nuts, honey, maple
syrup, and herbs. Data collected
will also include information on
acres under production, high tunnel
and greenhouse usage, information
on processed and value-added
products, and marketing outlets. The
results of the survey will available in
December.
The survey was the result of
a cooperative effort by many
organizations including the Iowa
Department of Agriculture and
Land Stewardship, Iowa State
University Extension & Outreach,
the Leopold Center for Sustainable
Agriculture, the Iowa Farm Bureau,
the Iowa Field Office of the National
Agricultural Statistics Service,
Practical Farmers of Iowa, the
Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers
Association, the Iowa Farmers
Market Association, and Eat Greater

Report from the Statehouse
(by State Senator Bill Dix who
represents Hardin County in the
Iowa Senate.)
Senate Republicans continue to
stress the importance of sustainable
spending
and
honoring
our
commitments. It is essential this
remains our focus moving forward
considering we face a challenging
budget year. That challenge will
result in making tough choices that
impact Iowans. One of those tough
choices last week was on education
funding.
Legislators want this matter solved
in a timely manner because that is
what school board members and
school administrators shared with
us repeatedly during the interim. At
the moment, it appears Legislators
agree setting this number early is
a priority. What is not agreed upon
is the amount of new money that
will be allocated to schools. Last

an increase of nearly $143 million
of new funding, which includes $53
million in Teacher Leadership and
Compensation money. The Senate
took up that bill last Wednesday
with Senate Democrats suggesting
nearly $228 million of new spending
on education, which includes TLC.
Now, negotiations can begin in
conference committee.
Senate Republicans believe it
is important our children receive
a world-class education. It is our
desire to provide them the available
resources and tools to compete
in our global economy. It is also
imperative we keep our promises and
budget responsibly when it comes to
education. Promising schools tens
of millions of dollars only to fail
on that promise months from now

the students. This is not a scare tactic

districts were promised a total of
$600 million they never received
because the Legislature failed to
keep its promise. $600 million
promised. $600 million budgeted
by schools. $600 million in funding
that was never provided by the
Legislature. This is not acceptable.
I hope the conference committee
will come to an agreement on a level
of increased funding for schools
which recognizes the importance
of investing in our students while
ensuring we do not over-promise,
only to under-deliver when it’s
time to pay. If we fail to honor our
commitments today, how will our
children trust us in the future? I

Spartans sweep rival
South Hardin cagers
by Scott Bierle
Sports Editor
GRUNDY CENTER- A perfect
conference campaign was captured
by Grundy Center, coasting past the
South Hardin girls’ basketball team,
55-27 during North Iowa Cedar
League West play here Friday.
The Spartans completed the host’s
sweep in the nightcap with a 61-55
win over the Tigers.
SCORING WOES FOR GIRLS
The scoring struggles continued
for the South Hardin girls, producing a season-low output. The Tigers
were limited to single figures all four
quarters after hitting double digits
just one in four periods with West
Marshall last Tuesday.
“Grundy Center plays hard on defense and we had a hard time ever
starting our offense. We did a lot of
catch and shooting, instead of working for the good shot,” commented
South Hardin coach Matt Thomp-
son.
The Tigers battled the state-ranked
Spartans early, leading 9-8 late in
the first period. Grundy scored the
game’s first eight points and South
Hardin answered with the next
nine-in-a-row behind Nina Priske’s
seven. The Spartans’ Hailey Wallis’
three-pointer then beat the buzzer
for a 12-9 lead after one quarter and
ignited a 13-0 run as Grundy tallied
the first nine points of the second
and never looked back.
The Spartans stretched the advantage to 31-16 at the break as the
Tigers went the first 3:17 scoreless
and 6:10 deep into the second before
hitting a field goal – a Lydia Rose
three-ball.
After Priske’s bucket pulled South
Hardin within 31-18 to start the
third, Grundy scored the next 13
points sparked by Katie Lindeman’s
two three-pointers.
Lindeman netted a game-high 19
points, Wallis had 15 and Brooke
Flater nine. Wallis sank three treys
and Lindeman two. Lindeman had
a career-high 29 points in the first
meeting – a 60-44 victory.
The No. 14 in Class 2A Spartans
capped the conference at 12-0 and
closed the regular season 20-1 with
15 straight wins.
Priske led a short scoring column
for the Tigers at nine points with
eight for Hannah Tripp and five each
for Rose and Miquela Teske.
“We need to play more consistent,” noted Thompson. “We came
out Tuesday against West Marshall
with great intensity and battled, and
tonight we didn’t show much intensity.”
The loss left the Tigers 5-5 in the
league – tied for third and 12-7 overall with a fifth loss in the past eight
games.
Grundy Center was back on the
court just 24-hours after winning a
state-ranked showdown 49-44 over
West Marshall, No. 9 in Class 3A,
Thursday.

defenders and to the basket during NICL West cage play Friday.
South Hardin lost both games – the girls 55-27 and boys 61-55.
COMEBACK FALLS SHORT
The South Hardin boys dug a
deep hole early and fell just short of
climbing out.
Grundy Center opened a 19-4 lead
after one quarter, scoring the final 14
points and then repelled one charge
after another by the visiting Tigers.
“We lost that game in the first
quarter,” stated South Hardin coach
Adam Weig. “The guys did a nice
job of coming back, but we didn’t
come to play at the beginning.”
Back-to-back Grant Weldon threepointers along with two baskets by
Jarrett Stoner fueled the Spartans’
early scoring spree.
South Hardin then won the next
three periods 51-42. The visitors
pulled within seven at 30-23 late
in the second on a Hunter Edgerton three-ball and in the third were
within six at 41-35 on a Dane Butler
bucket.
Down nine after three, South Hardin sliced the deficit to five at 5348 on triples by Ted Dunn and Jon
Weber with 3:15 showing, but each
and every time the Spartans had the
answer.
“When you are down every possession is important and we didn’t
handle that well. We executed at
time and didn’t at other times,” Weig
said.
Edgerton’s 15 points led four Tigers in double figures with 14 for
Weber and Dunn, and 10 for Butler.
Jordin Wilkie’s two points rounded
out the scoring. Dunn drained four
three-pointers with two for Edgerton
and Weber, who had eight rebounds
and six assists.
The loss was a fifth straight for
South Hardin, tumbling to 4-6 in the
league and 5-13 overall. The Tigers
won the two team’s first meeting 6463 in overtime.
The Spartans’ Austin Burroughs
buried 16 points for game-high honors with 13 for Stoner. Weldon added nine, Bryce Flater eight and Jared
Krausman seven. Stoner had seven
rebounds with five assists and four
steals for Burroughs.
Grundy stands 6-5 in the conference and 10-10 overall with the third
straight win.
The South Hardin cagers wrap-up
the NICL West tonight (Tuesday)
against AGWSR in Eldora. Thursday, the boys then play highlyranked Dike-New Hartford in Eldora
and the girls travel to Webster City.

CONRAD- The first hurdle of
wrestling’s post-season was cleared
by South Hardin-BCLUW’s Ian
Showers and Ryland Duchane.
The two juniors registered runnerup placings at a Class 2A sectional
meet and qualified for districts with
the top two efforts. Showers scored
the silver medal at 113-pounds and
Duchane at 160.
The third-seeded Showers posted
an impressive 10-0 victory over
Grinnell’s Alexander Farmer in the
semi-finals and lost by fall in 3:07
to state-ranked Brady Fritz of South
Tama in the championship match. In
the semi, Showers combined a takedown with a two-point nearfall for
a 4-0 first-period lead. That cushion
held into the third when Showers was
awarded a penalty point followed by
a takedown and three-point nearfall.
The second-seeded Duchane traded falls as he pinned Roland-Story’s
Liam Schevermann at 1:09 in the
semis and was pinned by Nick Long
of East Marshall at 2:39 in the finals.
“Duchane and Showers did what
they had to do to advance. They knew
the semi-finals were big matches and
came through with wins,” stated SHBCLUW co-coach Mike Olson.
“Overall, it was about what we
expected with maybe a couple exceptions. It was disappointing to
see Dorow finish fourth after his big
showing at conference, but on the
other hand, Chapman taking third
with a shot at wrestleback was exciting. All the kids fought hard,” added
Olson.
The Storm registered a 5-2 record
with five falls and three byes in the
quarterfinals, but then went just 2-6
in the semi-finals.
Chapman pinned Nevada’s Luke
Ferguson in 49-seconds in the third
place bout to earn a wrestleback
where the junior was pinned in 1:16
by Grinnell’s Dalton Kies. Chapman
opened with a fall at the 1:02 mark in
the quarterfinals and was pinned by
top-seed Tyson Manzer of RolandStory in the semis.
Dorow, the 126-pound NICL Conference champion one week ago,
finished fourth. The third-seeded
junior opened with a fall in 1:42
in the quarterfinals, but then lost
by technical fall 19-4 in the semis
to Grinnell’s Lane Milner and was
beaten 11-6 for third by R-S’s Koby
Hassebrock. The division was solid
as Dorow, Milner, Hassebrock and
champion Tanner Probasco of South
Tama all started the day with 30-plus
wins.
The Storm’s Coby Willett at
120-pounds and heavyweight Ryne
Fuller added thirds with fourths for
Cody Richard at 152 and Kolten
Rewoldt at 170. Caleb Engle at 182
finished fifth and Jayden Luse at 132
sixth.
For the bronze, Willett was a 7-6
winner over Grinnell’s Ethan Kirby
and Fuller flattened East Marshall’s
Bryce Anderson in 1:18.
South Hardin-BCLUW finished
fifth in the six-team meet, scoring
122 points with East Marshall fourth
at 124 and Nevada sixth at 121.
South Tama captured the team
title at 225 points and advanced nine
matmen to districts, while crowning
five champs. Roland-Story scored
205.5 points for second with six top
two placewinners and third place
Grinnell had seven qualifiers.
The first and second placewinners
from the Conrad sectional advance
to a district meet Saturday in Parkersburg.
