Archdiocesan guidelines request that couples planning to
marry in the Church make an appointment to see one of
the priests at least six months prior to the wedding date.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK:
Please call the Parish Office if someone in your family is ill
and you feel the grace and power of the Sacrament would
be helpful. This Sacrament should not be seen as only administered when there is danger of death. PLEASE, call us
if someone is in the hospital, so that we can visit the loved
one and have the community pray for them.

“What do you want me to do for you?”
“Master, I want to see.”
Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved
you.” And Bartimaeus was immediately able to see.
The Gospels tell several stories of blind men who
are healed by Jesus. John’s Gospel devotes the
entire chapter 9 to a blind man in Jerusalem. Mark’s
Gospel describes a healing in Bethsaida in 8:22
and in today’s passage in 10:46 he tells of the
healing of one Bartimaeus in Jericho. In Matthew’s
Gospel Jesus heals two blind men in one
occasion: 20:29-34, while leaving Jericho. That
makes it hard to tell which healing Duccio chose to
depict in the painting presented on the bulletin
cover. It probably is one man shown in two states (a
moving picture!): the man first blind, then healed,
turning away, dropping his walking stick.

This wonderful painting by Duccio tells a story and
makes the Gospel come alive. It shows us Jesus,
the healer, filled with compassionate love, healing a
blind man. It shows us Jesus, the teacher and
master, leading a band of twelve following close
behind. Jesus, in Jericho, is close to Jerusalem, the
place where he will undergo his Passion, death and
resurrection. Jericho is just fifteen miles away from
Jerusalem, and the healing of Bartimaeus is his last
miracle before arriving there. The twelve form a
tight knit group—they seem to walk as one. For
three years Jesus has been teaching, forming and
schooling this diverse group that he had first called
to follow him. Although he will send the Holy Spirit
who will be with them until the end of the ages, he,
physically, will be taken from them and the works of
mercy will be theirs to confer: feed the hungry and
give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked and
welcome the stranger, heal the sick and visit the
imprisoned, counsel the doubtful and instruct the
ignorant, admonish the sinner and comfort the
afflicted, forgive offenses and bear wrongs
patiently, bury the dead and comfort the living.

This painting is a good meditation for the whole
Church as we prepare for what Pope Francis calls a
special time for the Church, “A Jubilee of Mercy”
which begins, I believe, on the Feast of the
Immaculate Conception, December 8, 2015. Did
you read the recent Boston Globe article about our
friends in Amesbury and the challenge they have
set for themselves as a Parish during the Jubilee of
Mercy? We should not let the year go by without
taking advantage of the opportunity that is being
presented to us. More on this soon.

I am grateful to have been able to spend the month
of September at the Institute for Continuing
Theological Education at the North American
College in Rome. Together with 28 other priests
from around the USA, 2 from Ireland and 2 from
Australia, the ICTE program offered a wonderful
program on Art and Architecture. We spent only one
day and a half in the classroom. The rest of the time
was spent visiting churches, museums and historic
sites in Rome, Orvieto and Assisi. Hopefully, there
will be opportunity to share what I saw, learned and
experienced in my homilies and in informal settings.
And if you ever need a personal guide…..!
MONDAY
Now it’s back to work! The most important thing on
the plate is the implementation of the Archdiocesan
Plan, “Disciples in Mission” for our Collaborative:
Holy Redeemer Parish and Immaculate Conception
Parish. I look forward to working with Father Tim
and the members of the Parish Finance Councils
and the Parish Pastoral Councils as we move ahead
forming our plan of action to use our resources in
the most effective and efficient of ways for the
building up of our Catholic community. Like
Bartimaeus, let’s not hold back in asking the Lord
for vision and to show us the path to follow.

strategic plan for religious education in the parish in
conjunction with Parish Council and the resources of the
Archdiocese as part of the collaborative with Holy
Redeemer.

Here too, we can ask: How do we keep our faith as
a family? Do we keep it for ourselves, in our
families, as a personal treasure like a bank account,
or are we able to share it by our witness, by our
acceptance of others, by our openness? We all
know that families, especially young families, are
often “racing” from one place to another, with lots to
do. But did you ever think that this “racing” could
also be the race of faith? Christian families are
missionary families. …They are missionary in
everyday life, in their doing everyday things, as they
bring to everything the salt and the leaven of faith!

and youth of the parish are welcome to dress in costume and
join in games at the Hoopla with the residents on Sat. Oct 31st

your family will be joining in this activity. This activity counts
toward a catechetical event for the Summer Religious Education

Our next monthly Youth Mass at 6pm is on Sunday,
November 1 at IC with Service Learning session until
7:30pm which is part of the religious education program.
Mass alternates between Holy Redeemer-Church of the
Nativity in Merrimac and IC. Open to all, especially MS
and HS youth. Reminder: the collection is money for the
parish or a non-perishable food item for the local food
pantry—Pettengill House.

Scripture Study Meets on October 25, 2015
Note Change in Schedule
Father Broderick’s Scripture Study will not meet on
the regularly scheduled third Sunday of the month,
October 18, 2015, but will meet on the fourth
Sunday, October 25 at 2:00pm in the Parish Center.
We will discuss The First Epistle of Paul to the
Corinthians, Chapters 13 through the letter’s
conclusion
A gifted teacher, Father Broderick not only explains
the meaning of the Scripture passages, but also
presents rich description of the period and places
cited, as well as the culture and practices of the
people involved. He connects the events in the New
Testament to Old Testament prophecies and
events, as well as to our own time. This is a
worthwhile way to spend an hour and fifteen
minutes on a Sunday afternoon. All are invited to
attend these sessions and grow in knowledge and
faith.
