The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
DearFriends,
you Children seem able to sing easily, especially when they are quite small. They dance
and skip and sing because they are, as we say, “happy-go-lucky.” They are without worries,
withoutanxie[es,withoutconcerns.Ifachildisnotshy,heorsheratherquicklystartstosing
anysongwerequest.Andthereisrealjoyinhisorhersongwhichgivesitacertainbeauty.
Bycomparison,weallknowhowharditistogetadultstosinglikethis. Eventoget
them to sing at all is no easy task. We can ask why, in place of the joy and spontaneity of
children, adolescents and adults are characteris[cally self-conscious and embarrassed. We
realizethatasadultswearerestrainedand[ghtinside,wefeelrestrictedandcannotloosenup
easily. Sowhenadultgroupsdosingoutfreely,weknowtheyhavebrokenthroughthesebarriersandhavegainedasecuritywithone
another.Theyareatease,andso,abletosingwithgladness.
ThePsalmisttoday,encouragesustosingoutfreelyandjoyfully.“Come,”heinvitesus,“letussingjoyfullytotheLord.Letus
acclaimtheRockofoursalvaMon.Letusgreethimwiththanksgiving;letusjoyfullysingpsalmsforhim…forHeisourGod,andweare
the people He shepherds, the flock He guides.” This is the source and reason of our security and why we can, through faith, regain
something of the “happy-go-lucky” feeling and response of children. We are sheep with our shepherd guiding us. We are peaceful
together as a flock, knowing that our shepherd is watching nearby. In the Eucharis[c celebra[on and other gatherings of Faith, this
securehappiness,thisawarenessofGod’spresenceandguidingpresenceisthespiritthatleadsustosingjoyfullytotheLord. Wecan
“letourselvesgo,”becauseGodistakingcareofus,fully,andlovingly!
ThePsalmisttodayreassuresusofthissecurity.Weneednotbeanxiousorself-conscious.Wearefreetoletlooseinsideand
takeupthePsalmist’scall,“ComeletussingjoyfullytotheLord…forHeisourGod,andwearethepeopleHeshepherds,theflockHe
guides.”

Greetings from the Youth Ministry Office
Youth Ministry is off and running again at OLV. The Youth have met a couple of times and we had a
Parent Meeting. It is not too late to come and join the fun and fellowship. Youth Group is meeting on
Wednesday evenings during the summer from 7-8:30 p.m., in the Youth Room. This is just a general hang
out session with some fun activities here and there. We watch movies and discuss them. We will be
finishing “Wreck it Ralph” this Wednesday. Come and join us in our discussions!
To all the young adults and parents, I am looking for a few individuals who will be willing to be a part of the Youth
Ministry team. The team would help out during the Wednesday evening meeting by mentoring and leading small groups.

We are planning for a Youth Ministry Kick-off BBQ for Saturday, August 20, following the 5 p.m. Mass. All High
School students and their families are welcome to join us. Hope to see you there! I am creating a three month events
calendar that will be available this week so be on the lookout for it on the Youth Group page of the website

Our first reading comes from the Book of
Ecclesiastes and it is the only time in the entire three year
cycle that we have a reading from this book. This may be
because the overall tone of the book is pessimistic.
Ecclesiastes is the most skeptical book in the Bible. The
book identifies its author as “Qoheleth,” a name which
means ‘preacher.’
Qoheleth is a man searching for
happiness, and he is not successful in finding it. Despite all
of his attempts to find happiness, or joy nothing satisfies him.
His refrain is “All things are vanity.” The Hebrew word
translated as vanity literally means “vapor” or “thin air.” It is
the author's way of saying many things attract us or intrigue
us, but nothing has lasting value. This understanding of the
value of possessions is equal to the way Jewish thought for
the promise of Jesus gives us of resurrection and eternal life.
Our gospel parable today is going to give us the same
message but Jesus will move us to the next step.
We continue on our journey with Jesus as accounted
in Luke’s Gospel. Jesus tells the parable about a rich man
who has so much harvest that he needs to tear down his
barns and build bigger ones. Whenever I hear this gospel
passage all I can think about is the rows and rows of storage
units we have. Not only do we have so much “STUFF” that
we fill our homes to the breaking point but we pay to store it
in another location. Have you ever asked yourself do I need
all the stuff that I have?
Jesus’ words ring loud in my ears, “You fool, this
night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you
have prepared, to whom will they belong? Thus will it be for
all who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich in
what matters to God.” The following is a reflection in Lost for
Words about these verses. “In the parable of the rich farmer,
Jesus depicts a man who thinks that life is all about riches.
Once he has more than enough, he thinks that his life is
complete, that he has nothing more to worry about. He
places his trust in wealth to make him happy and fulfilled.
Jesus does not accuse the man of being wicked or sinful; the
rich man is simply wrong. His wealth leads him to think that
life is nothing more than eating and drinking and being
comfortable. He is the ultimate materialist, and in this he
sells himself short. It is as if the man is only worth the sum
of his possessions. He is what he owns. If we live life as if
our jobs, our status, or our money are more important to us
than our family, our friends, or our own spirit—then we have
got our priorities totally wrong. It is easy for us to get our
priorities wrong—to think in terms of what looks good, what
appears attractive on the surface.”
We all know that change is difficult. It is hard to let
go of what we have been told and that gives us security. Are
you willing to open your hands so that you might let go of the
possessions, objects, or the attitudes that take up your time
and energy?

In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the rich man who selfishly stored all his grain and goods only to die and not
enjoy his abundance. What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor our perceived
security, but of being possessed by God.
Listening to Luke’s Gospel today brings to mind those individuals who were singularly, inwardly focused on amassing
monetary and physical possessions so they would be “comfortable” in their later years, only to
meet with tragic demise months after their retirement. As Jesus teaches, it is not in worldly
possessions but in giving selfless loving service to those in need which can bring peace, comfort
and joy into our hearts.

needs for the program this fall. Three areas in
which we need dedicated, faith filled people who
feel called to the ministry of Catechesis are:
Classroom Catechist, Sunday Liturgy of the
Word Catechist, Sunday Christ the Good

Needs Catechist or classroom companion. We trust in the faith

Vocations
The annual Seminary Day for Altar Boys will be held
Friday, August 5, thanks to your gifts to the Catholic Services
Appeal.
Altar boys in grades 7-12 will be able to have Mass with
Archbishop Allen Vigneron, learn more about the seminary and
priesthood, and interact with priests and seminarians from the
Archdiocese.
The archdiocesan Office of Priestly Vocations provides
many opportunities for boys and men to better understand and
discern where it is that the Lord might be calling them. Besides
the Seminary Day for Altar Boys, the office hosts discernment
overnights and weekends, discernment days for junior high and
high school students, a Solemn Evening Prayer and Dinner, and a
vocations convocation for parish vocations committees. It also
provides outreach to parishes and schools and vocations
literature, brochures, and prayer cards.

Christ the Good Shepherd Preschool Program
It is time to think about our Sunday, 9:30 a.m, Preschool
program which is for 3 ½-5 year old children. Although sessions begin

Scripture Reflection for the family
We love the thought of a secure life. Much time and energy
is spent in making sure that we are looking out for the future. Whole
industries have evolved over this need to have a comfortable life
especially in our later years. This weekend’s gospel, however, throws
caution to our sense of what we really need in order to be happy and
what our true treasures are. In Jesus’ parable, we hear of a man who
having harvested a more than plentiful crop first thinks of ways in
which to store all the grains so that he would have enough for the
future. Who can blame him? We all know about rainy day funds.
However, his plan to have enough for the future is quickly interrupted.
We are told at the end of the story that God tells the man he is a fool
for he was to die that day and questions the man as to whom will all
this belong? What the man had thought was so diligently planned out
was not what mattered to God.
Families are first to teach their children the valuable lesson of
what truly matters in life. When we only concern ourselves with
wants instead of true needs, we can easily fall into the trap of never
considering the difference between the riches of this world as opposed
to what are the riches of God. And parents, who struggle with the
larger question of prudent ownership and the acquisition of goods,
teach their children how to discern what is necessary and to actively
share with others their blessings.
God’s vision is very different from ours and brings a new
mindset with it. Sharing then is done not from our excess but from a
sense of already having what we really need. And we will do it with the
recognition that to give to others is not charity but a part of God’s
plan.
Jesus’ lesson is an important one this week. What
matters to God is the highest good. It will make us rich
in ways that will bring lasting happiness and true peace!

to the Detroit Public Schools and Northville
Civic Concern
• 50:50 split between seller and the PTO,
unless donated
• Revenues sent to you within two weeks
post-sale
• Unsold items are kept in the shop for future
sales opportunities.
