It has always needed prayer but I believe that more than ever there is a need for prayer, especially with the recent Supreme Court ruling on Same Sex marriage. We are not helpless. Time and time again prayers to the Blessed Mother have been what have gotten our people through difficult times. Several times in history, especially one great naval battle, it has been the praying of the rosary asking the intercession of the Mother of God that has helped God's people win battles. (See - Miracle of Lepanto) If you can, please pray the rosary as a family. Have a rosary CD in your car and pray it on the way to work, on the road as you are on vacation and any other time. If you can't say a complete rosary say one decade. (It only takes three minutes). Your children will only learn how to say the rosary if they see mom and dad, grandmother and grandfather pray this way. Jefferson residence: 605-966-5716 Email: frjosephvogel@sfcatholic.org Deacon Joe Twidwell Cell phone: 712-253-9273 Email: jtwidwell@snbonline.com Refer to mass intention schedule on page 2 days and weekday Mass times. In the next 10 years, the number of priests in East River South Dakota will decline from 92 to 55. Vocations to the Priesthood do not just magically happen. They grow from seeds planted in the minds of good men by their family, friends and parish. Plant the seed of hope and help us build God’s family! Sacrament of Baptism or Marriage: Please contact Father Vogel 966-5716 Also, for those of you who are able, please come to at least one daily Mass each week. It is the most powerful prayer we have. Many of you who are older know that there was a time in your life that you couldn't even give a thought to coming to a daily Mass. Now you have the time and you have learned that daily prayer and Mass is the best thing you can offer for our world. There is no prayer more powerful than the Mass. We have Mass at 8:00 am four mornings a week and two evenings at 5:30pm. IT HAS BEEN QUITE A YEAR I can't believe it but it has been a year since I have been with you great people. In many ways time has flown by but I must admit in other ways it has been quite a change for me and for you. Here are a few things I have learned: You people are very flexible. It is never easy to change Mass times, to combine parishes that have never been combined and to have two new priests with you. Great job. Blessed Teresa wins the prize for going through the most changes. Elk Point and Jefferson did this several years ago. You have gone from one full-time priest for all 15 years of your existence to having me be there one-fourth of the time and Fr. Jeff being there some of the time. You have gone from having a priest living in the parish rectory to one living eight miles up the road. I have learned that obedience is always the best way to go. When I was ordained I promised Bishop Dudley obedience to him and all his successors. When Bishop Swain informed me that I was going to move he asked me if there was any place I would like to go. I told him that I trusted him and the Holy Spirit and things have worked out very well. I am very happy here and I have felt very welcomed by you. As a farm kid I am happy to be living in a town of 500 and hanging around people who know all about farming and who have a deep love for the land. My head still spins around from having to schedule myself in four different places. Every now and again wondering if I am heading to the right place and a few times I wasn't and needed to turn around. I miss the people who I was with at my last parish in Sioux Falls but I don't miss the work. It was always busy. We started St. Katharine Drexel parish from an alfalfa field and when you do that you learn a lot about each other and become very close to each other. I am blessed to be part of Broom Tree Retreat Center. I believe that all that I do there has a positive impact on the parishes I now serve. It is truly holy ground and if you haven't been there I invite you to spend some time there and feel the presence of God. Continued on page 2 Have you thanked God today?
