South China Tribal Encounters Carved from limestone, the southern provinces of Guizhou and Guangxi are home to a rich diversity of minority tribes. Blessed with a haunting landscape of monolithic karst hills and meandering rivers, they present some of the most quintessentially Chinese backdrops anywhere in the country. This journey though begins amongst the bright lights of Shanghai, before swiftly moving on to Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province. Here you will visit Huangguoshu (China’s largest waterfall) and the ancient town of Tianlong, before journeying through the beautiful countryside to Kaili and on to Leishan County, the heart of China’s Miao community. Continuing to Zhaoxing you’ll visit the villages and markets of the Dong people, before continuing up into the mountains to experience the incredible rice terraces of the famous “Dragon’s Backbone”. The journey on to Yangshou then takes you through a breathtaking landscape of karst hills, meandering waterways and rice paddies, allowing you a couple of days to explore the area by bike or raft before ending this incredible encounter on the bustling streets of Hong Kong. The remainder of the day is free to rest or explore this bustling, modern city. Day 2: Shanghai - Guiyang Fly to Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province. Guizhou has a huge amount to offer the more adventurous traveller and in the afternoon you are free to walk around Qianling Park. (B) Day 3: Guiyang Today see China's largest waterfall, Huangguoshu, and visit the ancient town of Tianlong. On the way back stop off at Shipouzai village to view the Bouyi architecture. (B) Day 4: Guiyang - Kaili This morning drive through some lovely countryside to Kaili. Visit the folk museum in Kaili before exploring the local villages of Qingman Miao, Xijiang Qianhu and Shiqiao Miao to see traditional paper making. (B) Day 5: Kaili - Rongjiang Today drive to Leishan county, the centre of the Miao culture in South-east Guizhou. From Leishan, travel to Miao He Miao village and Lang De Village, which is known for its Long-Skirt Miao, a minority group. Overnight in Rongjiang. (B) Day 6: Rongjiang - Zhaoxing Drive to Zhaoxing stopping to visit traditional villages en route such as Bashan Miao and Dong village. Zhaoxing is the largest Dong community in China and has five drum towers built in the form of pagodas. (B) Day 7: Zhaoxing - Sanjiang This morning explore Zhaoxing visiting the village of Jitang and its bustling market, where the minority ladies sell their handicrafts, and see the Drum Towers at Gulou village with their exquisite murals. (B) Day 8: Sanjiang - Longsheng - Longdi Village Drive along windy roads through amazing scenery up into the mountains to Longdi village, near Longshend. This region is the ultimate China experience, set high up in the mountains, surrounded with terraced rice fields. Walk up to the Longdi village, which is located on the famous Dragon's Backbone Rice Terrace. (B) Day 9: Longdi Village Spend the day enjoying walks along the rice terraces to Yao or Dong villages in the area. (B) Day 10: Longdi Village - Yangshuo Leaving Longdi, drive through beautiful limestone scenery to Yangshuo. These peaks along with Yangshuo's rivers and rice paddies are delightfully photogenic. (B) Day 11: Yangshuo Yangshuo is a lovely place in which to relax and there are many things to do. Over the next two free days you might like to rent a bicycle and ride through the enchanting back roads of the Yangshuo countryside, or raft on the beautiful Yulong River. (B) Day 12: Yangshuo - Guilin - Hong Kong Enjoy another free day in Yangshuo and in the late afternoon drive to Guilin for the flight to Hong Kong. (B) Day 13: Hong Kong The day is left free, Hong Kong is a modern city and easy to get around. We suggest you visit Victoria Peak, Aberdeen Fishing Village and Stanley Market.
