IOI Corporation Berhad reinforced its leadership position in the palm oil industry by ending 2015 with the coveted The Edge BRC “Most Profitable Company: Highest ROE” in the plantation sector (page 07). Apart from a leading palm oil producer, IOI endeavours to contribute to the advancement of a sustainable palm oil industry. This commitment is reflected in IOI Loders Croklaan’s recent achievement of 100% traceability for its directly-sourced palm oil and its continuous journey to build a traceable, transparent and sustainable palm oil supply chain (in Cover Feature). When it comes to the environment, IOI is driven to seek the utmost standards as exemplified in IOI Acidchem’s proactive efforts that are acknowledged with the highest accolade in environment management (page 18).Various Responsible Care Awards are recorded on page 19. Indeed, these achievements are a firm demonstration of IOI’s Excellence in Execution core value; in fact IOI’s newlyreleased corporate video is aptly titled “The Path to Excellence” and illustrates its success story. This path to excellence resonates with IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) which finished 2015 strong by climbing the list of The Edge’s top property developers and garnering public votes to win four awards including Best Commercial Development for IOI City Mall (ICM) and Best Landed Development for Sierra 6 @ 16 Sierra. On top of these momentous awards as well as various launches (in the Property section), IOIPG is poised to move forward with confidence in 2016. With no less than 10 ongoing projects and the start of ICM’s phase two, IOIPG is on track to achieve its RM2 billion sales target for the financial year ending 30 June 2016 despite a softening property outlook. ICM also ended well when its Olympic-sized Icescape Ice Rink and apocalypse themed action park District21 were endorsed by The Malaysia Book of Records (page 27). Meanwhile, Asia’s first “Big Hole Golf” teed off at Palm Garden Golf Club to avid and novice golfers who would definitely have fun acing a hole in this new 8-inch game changer (page 34). As 2015 closes its curtain, let us welcome 2016 with optimism and enjoy a leap year of 366 promising days. Therein lies the challenge for IOI Group, a global leading palm oil producer with over 250,000 hectares of planted area in Malaysia and Indonesia – to achieve commercial success in a sustainable manner. The Group’s Sustainability Policy Statement addresses key environmental, ecological and social concerns encompassing the footprints of its upstream agronomic practices and downstream manufacturing processes, which stress the importance of traceability. Taking Responsibility In recent years, calls for sustainable palm oil production have grown stronger with some giant food manufacturers and retailers putting in place stringent corporate sourcing policies to demand greater accountability from their vendors in its supply chains. Presently, IOILC is a leading importer of sustainable palm oil into Europe. To date, 51% of the palm oil volumes imported into Europe by IOILC are CSPO volumes which were either sold as Segregated (SG) or Mass Balance (MB) RSPO-certified to its customer base. The MB route will ensure the uptake of physical CSPO into the IOILC processing plants while limiting the costs for segregation during processing. A high percentage of traced oil will give assurance to customers who purchase MB CSPO as 100% traced oil guarantees that only oil from known sources is mixed with SG CSPO to produce MB CSPO. This paradigm shift in sustainability places IOI Loders Croklaan (IOILC), a global palm-based fats and oils provider to multinational companies, in the driving seat in meeting these expectations. It proactively began to streamline its supply chain and procurement practices as outlined in its Sustainable Palm Oil Policy, which is in line with the Group’s sustainability policy on its commitment to build traceable and transparent supply chains. Providing Certified Sustainable Palm Oil Traceable palm oil is the prerequisite to being certified as sustainable palm oil, which is produced according to the standards established by Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). There are currently 12.89 million tonnes of certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) which equal to 20% of palm oil produced worldwide. Certified Sustainable Palm Oil Production (Tonnes) 16,000,000 12,000,000 IOILC is a leading importer of sustainable palm oil into Europe with 51% of its total volumes being CSPO. IOILC’s active engagement with its suppliers led to another sustainability milestone when it received the first 4,500 MT shipment of SG RSPO-certified palm oil sourced from NaturAceites palm oil mill in Guatemala on 29 October 2015. In this instance, the milestone resulted from IOILC’s involvement in the Solidaridad Farmer Support Programme which in turn, assisted the palm oil mill in obtaining its RSPO certification at the end of 2015. Three Steps to a More Sustainable Palm Oil Supply Chain 8,000,000 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 4,000,000 Traceable oil does not warrant it being sustainable; however, knowing the origin of the oil sourced allows IOILC to monitor and engage with its suppliers to enable a sustainable supply base which adheres to its Sustainable Palm Oil Policy. A Sustainable Palm Oil Sourcing Committee was established to support IOILC in building a traceable, transparent and sustainable supply chain through this three-step, time-bound action plan. COVER FEATURE BERITAIOI Step 1: Know the origin of the oil IOILC’s sustainable sourcing practices ensure that the source of IOILC’s palm oil and palm kernel oil can be traced to a specific group of originating mills that are: (a) Directly sourced via IOI Group through its current 12 RSPOcertified mills in Malaysia (excluding two Unico Desa mills acquired in 2013 that are expected to be RSPO-certified by 2018) or third party mills. (b) Indirectly sourced via third party suppliers through other shippers, processors and traders. 05 100% of IOILC’s directly-sourced palm oil is traceable to mill level. Tracing both directly- and indirectly-sourced palm oil guarantees the source of the palm oil is known. Sourced volumes will qualify as traced volumes if the mill’s name, GPS coordinates and parent company are established. To date, IOILC has successfully achieved 100% traceability to mill level for its directly-sourced palm oil (which constitutes 54% of total volume sourced) and traced 95% of its indirectly-sourced palm oil to mill level. In total, 98% of its total supply is traceable to mill level. In addition, 80% of its total palm kernel oil sourced is also traceable to mill level. These achievements will further spur IOILC to maintain 100% traceability for directly-sourced palm oil and achieve the same for directly-sourced palm kernel oil. 98% Palm Oil Traceable to Mill Level* directly indirectly directly sourced indirectly sourced sourced sourced 100% traced 100% traced 54% 54% 29%** 29%** SG RSPO SG RSPO certified, certified,to traceable traceable plantationto plantation 46% 46% 95% traced 95% traced 80% Palm Kernel Oil Traceable to Mill Level* directly directly sourced sourced 89% traced 89% traced * ** 73% 73% indirectly indirectly sourced sourced 22%** 22%** SG RSPO SG RSPO certified, certified,to traceable traceable plantationto plantation 27% 27% 55% traced 55% traced As of Q3 2015. PO: 38% for financial year 2015 (FY2015). PK: 17% for FY2015. Results may vary from quarter to quarter depending on demand, stock levels and arrival dates of shipments. Significantly, on annual basis (FY2014/2015), 38% of total palm oil sourced is SG RSPO palm oil while SG RSPO palm kernel oil made up 17% of the total palm kernel oil sourced. Majority of the palm oil volumes sourced under the SG model originated from IOI Group-owned and managed mills and plantations (95%) while the remaining was sourced from RSPO-certified third party suppliers. Hence, SG PO products delivered to customers are fully traceable to plantation level (group of RSPO-certified plantations, predominantly IOI Group’s plantations). Step 2: Prioritise the mills After tracing the origin of the oil it sources, IOILC conducts a desktop risk analysis (remote sensing technology) on over 800 mills that have been supplying (direct and indirect) palm oil and palm kernel oil along its supply chain to analyse whether the mills are operating in a low or high sensitive area. To ensure that the oil is produced responsibly, mills are ranked based on spatial and non-spatial reviews to determine if their actions adversely impact any legally protected areas, key biodiversity areas, peat areas and other environmental aspects. The mills’ business policies, RSPO certifications and social considerations are also reviewed. Based on the analysis, the mills are then prioritised for a field visit. IOILC uses its commercial leverage to ensure the biggest impact; hence high risk mills with high volumes sourced are top priority. In FY2015, 30 mills have been classified as higher risk and therefore, received the highest priority for further scrutiny in the next step. Step 3: Execution of on-site verification programme The IOILC’s in-house mill verification team and sustainable management experts, Proforest, conduct field visits to these identified high priority mills for an on-site verification to assess the mills’ compliance with IOILC’s Sustainable Palm Oil Policy. The team has assessed and verified 10 mills as of 31 December 2015, with another 10 on-site mill assessments targeted to be completed in 2016. This three-step approach enables IOILC to monitor and engage with its direct and indirect suppliers, and transform its supply base into a sustainable supply base. As part of its engagement initiatives with suppliers, IOILC and Proforest organised the first roundtable session in September 2015 with supplying mills to increase their interest in the verification programme. The session resulted in two invitations to do a mill assessment while another roundtable session is scheduled for January 2016. These sessions are necessary to brief the mill owners on IOILC’s Sustainable Palm Oil Policy as well as the verification programme for better understanding. 06 COVER FEATURE BERITAIOI Achieving 100% Traceable SG RSPO Targets by 2020 In line with market demands, IOILC has established a timeframe in meeting its sustainability target of sourcing 100% SG RSPO certified or equivalent palm oil and palm kernel oil by December 2020. Parameter Status as per Q3 2015 Goal Traceability Palm Oil 98% mill level (100% for direct sourcing) 100% mill level by June 2016 Traceability Palm Kernel Oil 29% plantation level (SG RSPO certified) 100% plantation level by June 2018 80% mill level (89% for direct sourcing) 100% mill level by June 2016 Risk analysis on supply base (approximately 200 mills) 22% plantation level (SG RSPO certified) 100% plantation level by December 2018 High priority mills selected Minimum of 10 mill assessments per year 10 mill assessments completed (as of 31 December 2015) Prioritise supplying mills on basis of remote sensing techniques Conduct on-site assessment of high priority mills SG RSPO certified or equivalent 51% IOILC Europe 100% for IOILC Europe by December 2016 sourced by IOILC 12% IOILC Americas 100% for IOILC Americas by December 2018 0% IOILC Asia 100% for IOILC Asia by December 2020 Subject to market demand The Way Forward with Responsible Oil For FY2016, IOILC aims to maintain an overall traceability level of between 95% and 100% for palm oil and palm kernel oil products. To achieve this target, IOILC will uphold 100% traceability for directly-sourced palm oil and palm kernel oil. IOILC will also continue to engage with its current group of third party suppliers to further improve the traceability numbers, as well as increase efforts to obtain mill data for indirectly-sourced volumes. Among its ongoing efforts include implementing industry-wide initiatives such as mapping palm oil supplies back to plantation level (with a primary focus on Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah), supporting third party mills that are progressing towards RSPO accreditations, and participating in the IDH The Sustainable Trade Initiative-led Traceability Working Group and other industry programmes. To gain further credibility, IOILC will appoint an independent external auditing party to verify its traceability protocol and data. From time to time, IOILC will participate in interviews with industry/trade publications and speaking engagements at trade forums to provide its standpoints on sustainability-related issues, as well as providing regular updates on sustainability progress to stakeholders. By working closely with its suppliers and key stakeholders to enhance traceability awareness and comply with its Sustainable Palm Oil Policy, IOILC is well-positioned to meet its sustainability goals and tap into the growing market demand for CSPO. The 13% increase is due to better performance from the resource-based manufacturing division, and moderated by lower contribution from plantation division. The plantation division’s Q1 FY2016 profit decreased by 8% to RM258 million from RM281 million in the corresponding period last year (Q1 FY2015) due to lower crude palm oil (CPO) prices. In this quarter under review, average CPO price realised was RM2,119/MT against RM2,258/MT previously. As for the resourcebased manufacturing division, this quarter’s results before fair value loss on derivative financial instruments of RM189.7 million is 59% more than the RM119.6 million recorded last year. This is mainly due to improved margin as well as higher sales volume from the oleochemicals and the refining sub-segments. During Q1 FY2016, US dollar strengthened against the Ringgit by 18% with the exchange rate closing at a high of 4.4475 as at endSeptember. This has resulted in a non-cash flow net foreign currency translation loss of RM853.9 million (Q1 FY2015 – RM52.2 million) on its foreign currency denominated borrowings. Excluding the net foreign currency translation loss and the fair value loss on derivative financial instruments of RM202.8 million (Q1 FY2015 – RM10.8 million), the underlying pre-tax profit of RM402.7 million for this quarter is 22% higher than the underlying pre-tax profit of RM331.3 million for Q1 FY2015 which is due mainly to improved performance from the resource-based manufacturing division. Meanwhile, IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) recorded an operating profit of RM211.9 million in Q1 FY2016 which is 40% higher than Q1 FY2015. Its revenue has also increased 59% to RM595.3 million in this quarter. Property development’s increase in revenue and operating profit is attributed to the higher sales from its Trilinq development in Singapore and residential projects in IOI Palm City in Xiamen, People’s Republic of China as well as steady increase in progress works from ongoing development projects. Property investment benefited from the growth of its retail segment, with the additional 1.44 million net lettable area from IOI City Mall. The leisure and hospitality segment also witnessed increase in revenue and operating profits which is derived from Four Points by Sheraton Puchong, and the District21 theme park and Icescape Ice Rink at IOI City Mall. However, the aforesaid increase was partly offset with decrease in income from other operation due to lower income from provision of management services to a joint venture project. Despite the current challenging economic environment, IOIC expects its underlying operating performance for the remaining quarters to be satisfactory. Similarly, IOIPG’s performance is expected to be satisfactory going forward. IOIC One of Malaysia’s Most Profitable Companies IOI Corporation Berhad’s (IOIC) financial performance was recognised as the “Most Profitable Company: Highest Return on Equity Over Three Years” in the plantation sector at The Edge Billion Ringgit Club (BRC) Corporate Awards 2015. Launched in November 2015, this new corporate video is a timely update to the existing version to reflect the Group’s continuous growth and visionary path in upholding its Vision IOI. Set in a countryside amidst an oil palm plantation, the video begins on a nostalgic note depicting the hardship endured by a young boy as he tries to make a better life by selling ice cream on a bicycle. Based on a true life narrative, the boy however is not deterred by obstacles faced and remained determined to succeed in life. The boy is then revealed to be none other than IOI Group Executive Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng! T NEW BATCH OF CADET ASSISTANT TRAINEES o ensure a competent team of future assistant managers are ready for IOI Group’s estates, the plantation division continued its effort to roll out the Cadet Assistant (Trainee) Programme. This 10-week professional training started from 5 October 2015 till 10 December 2015 at Paya Lang Club House, Johor. Similar to previous batches, this batch also comprised classroom training for three weeks with the remaining weeks in field attachment. On the first day, Plantation Controller (Pamol Regional Office) Mr Kuppusamy delivered presentations titled “Towards a Successful Career as a Planter”, “The Plantation Industry in Malaysia” and “ISP – Professional Association for Planters”. The trainees were also briefed on the course structure, company profile, IOI Core Values and employee benefits. Classroom training began on the second day with the trainees exposed to basic plantation management. All the modules were customised and conducted exclusively by the estate managers for the trainees to acquire comprehensive understanding of the principles, concepts and practices of “Plantation Operations Management”. Estate attachment commenced immediately after the classroom training. Each trainee was posted to an estate to be familiarised with the estate’s environment, life and operations. CORPORATE UPDATES BERITAIOI 09 The six-minute video, available in both English and Mandarin to cater to a diverse audience of various nationalities, explained the core business activities of IOI Group, namely the plantation and resource-based manufacturing divisions, as well as its advancements in research and development, sustainable agronomic practices and philanthropic initiatives. Pledging Integrity & Honesty Team from Leepang A Estate proudly wearing the badge in support of the pledge. E very IOI employee is familiar with the IOI Core Values which consist of: Integrity, Commitment, Loyalty, Excellence in Execution, Speed or Timeliness, Innovativeness and Cost Efficiency. In December 2015, IOI Group’s plantation division has implemented an “Integrity & Honesty” pledge to all the division’s operating units in Malaysia to better reinforce these ideals. Employees were each given a badge to remind each other in upholding integrity and honesty in everything they do. An employee’s integrity and honesty are important to combat corruption in the workplace. This anti-corruption initiative is in line with one of Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) themes, and supports IOI’s effort in joining the list of companies demonstrating strong ESG practices. 10 CORPORATE UPDATES BERITAIOI LEADING for RESULTS We are ready with leading for results. “F ront line produces the bottom line.” Leadership effectiveness is all about rallying the team members to greater synergy and alignment, and translating operational objectives into results. An effective Manager has the capability to develop a culture of discipline, inculcate a culture of engagement, equip employees for future change, and get things done effectively through people. On 21 November 2015, IOI Group’s plantation division arranged the “Leading for Results” training for 36 operating units’ heads from Peninsular Malaysia. It was interesting to hear IOI Corporation Berhad Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Lee Yeow Chor’s inspiring and motivating welcome speech in Bahasa Malaysia for the benefit of the plantation staff. Dato’ Lee highlighted and emphasised IOI’s seven core values in his speech. He also highlighted the benefits and advantages of working in the plantation sector, such as having a stable career during this economy downturn even as other industries had been reducing their workforce. Instead, IOI continues to experience a shortage of foreign workers in recent years. Dato’ Lee advised everyone to work closely, cooperate with the management and work together to overcome the challenges. Applause rang loud when the “Long Service” and “Employee of the Year” awards were presented in recognition of dedicated and deserving employees for their loyalty and contributions. Full commissioning was conducted on 1 October 2015. This project was designed to meet the requirements of several departments for better operation management. The weighbridge is equipped with sensors, barrier gates, e-card reader, and traffic lights to help automate the weighing process, resulting in the weighing time being reduced from two to three minutes previously, to only less than 30 seconds! During the weighing process, the system is programmed to counter check the vehicle’s gross and tare weights and will raise a flag if it exceeds a pre-set tolerance level. This eases the Weighbridge Executive’s cross-checking, and system failures and bypasses are promptly emailed to a select group of IOIEO personnel for information and to enable counter checks if necessary. 4 1 2 3 At the Main Gate, security registration and pre-inspection of incoming road vehicles are recorded electronically and are checked against the supplier contracts for any issues. The system will also raise a red flag to alert Security if the driver is blacklisted. Fingerprint and facial image record and identity card information are maintained in the database. Then, a Gate Pass – in the form of an encoded card (e-card) to save paper – is issued to the driver. At the weighbridge, sensors can determine the tanker’s correct positioning so the driver does not need to leave his vehicle, hence minimising time and contact between the driver and IOIEO personnel. Photos of each weighing are taken and displayed along with critical vehicle information. 5 6 7 At the sampling platform, the driver’s e-card is tapped onto a touch screen and all relevant info will appear. A Duty Executive confirms the seal numbers, while the vehicle number is printed on a label. 8 A Lab Assistant samples the oil and labels the bottle, which is sent down a chute to the laboratory for testing. The laboratory updates the test results onto the system. If the oil passes, it is then allocated to a particular unloading bay for discharge of its contents to be segregated accordingly. At the receiving station, the driver passes his e-card to be tapped onto another e-card reader. The relevant data displayed verifies if the tanker is approved to discharge its cargo at the receiving station. Upon completion of discharge, the tanker proceeds for emptiness-checking and the card is once again tapped to verify completion of all the security steps before the tanker proceeds for final weighing. The tanker drives to the weighbridge. The e-card reader will automatically open the barrier gate when it is ready to receive the tanker. On the weighbridge, the tanker has its final weight captured within 30 seconds. The tanker drives to the exit and surrenders his e-card to print the weighbridge ticket. With this system, status of vehicles can be monitored on real-time basis. This transparency can become an effective tool to prevent any malpractices within IOIEO complex. Customised reports can be generated on the spot and/or on a daily basis as required by respective departments. Moving forward, IOIEO will implement this system for the fleet of Spent Bleaching Earth trailers leaving its premises for greater efficiency and monitoring. BHG will be held on the first Wednesday of every month. On 11 November 2015, PGGC invited avid golfers and media from golf publications to the first BHG tee-off at the golf club. Renowned Malaysian stand-up comedian Mr Harith Iskander was present to putt into the 8-inch cup to launch BHG, together with Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director (Package Development Division) Mr Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Malaysia Golf Tourism Association (MGTA) President Mr Ng Eu Shen. As anticipated by PGGC General Manager Mr Brandon Chin, the launch was warmly greeted by the guests who enjoyed playing BHG immensely. He said,“Besides speeding up the playing time, BHG makes golfing more fun and enjoyable, especially for wouldbe golfers or beginners who are not so good at the game yet. The introduction of BHG is also a positive step for the golfing fraternity, and Tourism Malaysia is excited to work on bringing more in-bound golfers from overseas.” Mr Chin explaining the concept of BHG during the press conference. Founded by Mr Murray Blair in Melbourne, BHG’s distinct difference is that the cup measures eight inches in diameter as opposed to the standard 4¼-inch cup and the flagstick must remain in the hole throughout play. BHG is basically fun golfing that takes less time to finish (about 3.5 hours) and makes it easier to hole out, thanks to the bigger hole. Currently, there are over 80 golf courses in Australia, US, UK and South Africa that offer BHG. After trying out BHG, Dato’ P.S. Jaya who is an avid golfer, enthused, “PGGC is a beautiful golf course, and the club is very well maintained. BHG is an excellent programme introduced by PGGC because it promotes the golf sport with a more fun-loving concept. More families can take part, especially the beginners (since it is) easier to putt into the 8-inch cup. Decent golfers like me can get more birdies, and probably a hole-in-one, which I’ve yet to hit until today! Kudos to PGGC for introducing BHG!” Giving the thumbs-up for BHG are (from left) Mr Mohd Hafiz, Mr Chin, Mr Harith Iskander, PGGC representative Mr Jack Lim and Mr Ng. The guests were feted during the launch event with food and drinks while being entertained by a live jazz performance. Prize giving and lucky draws capped off a great day for the guests as they enjoyed a nostalgic view of the golf course’s signature 18th Hole. Corporations and individuals are welcome to contact PGGC at 03-8213 6333 for the latest promotions on BHG.
