NEW SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH REVEALS
BETAPOL SUPPORTS INFANT BRAIN AND
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Betapol, one of IOI Loder Croklaan’s (“IOILC”) most groundbreaking
innovations, is a palm oil-derived nutritional additive which is used
to fortify infant milk powder globally, and is especially popular in the
People’s Republic of China (“PRC”). Research results have revealed
that Betapol mimics the unique fat composition and structure of
human milk fat, and is said to have a positive physiological effect
on brain function and physical development compared to standard
vegetable oils used in infant formulas.
New scientific discoveries related to OPO, the main component of
Betapol, were announced at the OPO Technical seminar organised
by IOILC on 21 August 2014 in Shanghai, PRC. This important
seminar attracted more than 80 participants from Danone, Wyeth,
Abbott, Mead Johnson and other well-known infant formula
companies in PRC.
Both Michael van Sallandt, Chief Operating Officer (“COO”) of
IOILC Asia, who gave the opening speech at the seminar, and Sander
Fredriks, General Manager of Sales & Marketing, who continued
with company and Betapol introduction reiterated the fact that
OPO structured lipids is the next trend in infant formula industry
and it is happening now.
Difference in fat composition
Vegetable Fat Blend
Professor Sebastiano Banni speaking at the seminar.
According to the latest discoveries of one of the keynote speakers
at the seminar, Professor Sebastiano Banni of the Department of
Biomedical Sciences of the University of Cagliari, Italy, the fatty
acid distribution within the fat molecules in infant nutrition may
influence the way neuronal activity is regulated and optimised in
the brain. His research indicates that the molecular structure of
OPO can positively influence infant’s energy metabolism, brain
function and physical development.
“We are glad to announce the positive outcomes of the research
at the seminar,” said Michael van Sallandt. “The research brings
additional evidence that Betapol is the scientifically substantiated
standard for high-quality infant formula and we are committed to
investing in OPO Research and Development (“R&D”) and OPO
production facilities.”
OPO was invented by IOILC in 1986. With a 20-year safety record
in the European market, Betapol is believed to be able to help
overcome the problems associated with poor fatty acid absorption
and its negative consequences on energy supply, stool consistency
and bone development. In 2008, PRC’s Ministry of Health approved
the usage of OPO products based on Betapol.
According to a recent report by Mintel, a key factor mothers
consider when choosing baby food is the closeness of the formula
to natural breast milk. Currently, infant formula milk containing
OPO, the closest natural match to breast milk fat, is available in 14
countries including China, South Korea, the United States and Britain.
The Chinese market is especially experiencing rapid growth with
a surge of products becoming available for consumers. These latest
scientific discoveries were also presented at the annual exhibition
held by China Dairy Industry Association (“CDIA”) on 22 – 24
August 2014 in Shanghai, PRC where IOILC displayed its product
and process patents to the benefit of infant formula manufacturers
and Chinese consumers.

THE ROLE OF DISTRIBUTORS IN
PROMOTING BETAPOL
In order to ensure that the benefits of Betapol eventually reach endusers, distributors play an important role in the supply chain. Their
support is vital in keeping the lines between manufacturers and
users smooth. Their roles vary and include continuous customer
visits, project follow-up and risk management; and they are also
heavily relied on to bring real value-added customers. Establishing
a good relationship with the distributors develops sales continuity
and trust of supply. As such, regular meetings with distributors are
deemed as one of the key strategies to promote Betapol globally.
In view of their importance, a special distributors’ meeting was
organised for the first time on 20 August 2014 to show appreciation
and build closer rapport with distributors in PRC region.
At the meeting, Dr Yan You Chun, Senior Manager, Application
& Development, IOI Lipid Enzymtec shared useful technical
knowledge, while Zhang Bin, PRC Sales Manager, shared insights on
Betapol’s sales report for PRC region and global sales trends with
five distributors from all parts of PRC. A discussion also ensued on
Betapol’s future growth in PRC market.
CONSISTENT MARKET EXPOSURE
FOR BETAPOL
Being a product that is steadily gaining popularity in the infant
formula market, regular exposure to industry players is crucial
for Betapol’s growth and development. IOILC’s participation at
the 14th China Dairy Industry Show held on 22 − 24 August 2014
at Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center reflects
IOILC’s recognition of the need for Betapol to constantly be in the
industry’s limelight. IOILC’s booth successfully attracted more than
a hundred visitors from PRC and overseas dairy industry players,
bringing further recognition to this highly beneficial product.
In line with PRC government’s efforts to improve the control over
infant formula industries, many changes on the rules and regulations
have been initiated and this has created many challenges as well as
opportunities for the industry. By capitalising on the opportunities
and overcoming the challenges, IOILC, as the inventor of OPO, will
continue to contribute to the growth of infant formula industries
both nationally and globally.
PROVEN BENEFITS OF
Extensive scientific research − including numerous clinical
studies – demonstrates that Betapol can play a beneficial role
in both preterm and full-term infants. Significant nutritional
benefits of infant formulas containing Betapol may include:
• Improved energy intake
• Reduced constipation
• Increased bone mineral density

IOI
Corporation Berhad’s (“IOIC”) net profit of RM402.7
million for the fourth quarter ended 30 June 2014 (“FY2014”) is 44%
higher than the net profit of RM279.7 million a year ago. Revenue for
the current period, however, was lower by 3.6% at RM2.83 billion
compared to RM2.94 billion that was recorded in the fourth quarter
a year ago. The results were mainly due to the translation gain of
RM101.3 million on foreign currency denominated borrowings
and gain of RM52.4 million arising from the demerger of the
property business from the Group, offset by the cessation of profit
continuation from the property related business in fourth quarter
ended 30 June 2014 following the demerger.
The profit of IOIC’s plantation segment rose by 92% to RM318.6
million for the fourth quarter FY2014 compared to RM165.5 million
recorded in the previous year, triggered by factors such as higher
crude palm oil (CPO) prices, palm kernel prices and higher fresh
fruit bunch (FFB) production. The resource-based manufacturing
segment’s profit of RM103.7 million for the fourth quarter FY2014
was 22% lower than RM133.6 million reported in 2013, due to
lower sales volume and margin from the refinery sub-segment, but
this however was mitigated by better results from specialty oils and
fats sub-segment.
Meanwhile, IOI Properties Group Bhd (“IOIPG”) posted a
net profit of RM413.05 million on the back of the revenue of
RM417.16 million in its fourth quarter ended 30 June 2014. The
Group’s revenue and operating profit from property development
contributed 85 per cent and 83 per cent respectively, to the group’s
year-to-date performance. Main contributors were development
projects in Klang Valley and Johor, complemented by the Group’s
development projects in Xiamen, the People’s Republic of China
which also contributed positively towards the results.

The 10-week training programme will cover all aspects of
estate management which include three weeks of classroom
lectures on basic estate management, and seven weeks of
field attachment in IOIC’s estates in Peninsular Malaysia. The
plan is to equip trainees with hands-on experience in estate
management. At the end of the training period, each of the
trainee will be individually assessed, and if found suitable, will
be offered junior management positions.

IOIC’S SUSTAINABILITY
MEASURES IN THE EYES OF
A BORNEO POST REPORTER
The Borneo Post which joined the media expedition hosted by IOI Loders Croklaan Asia at its Pasir Gudang facility on
14 – 15 August 2014 (please turn to page 25 to read more about the media expedition), recently published a piece about
its reporter’s visit to the Pamol Estate in Kluang. The Pamol Estate forms one of IOI Corporation Berhad’s (“IOIC”) high
performance estates where high-yielding, fast growing oil palm clones are planted.
I
n the article entitled “Sustainability the way forward for palm
oil industry”, the reporter mainly touches on the sustainability
measures undertaken by IOIC in its palm oil estates, and writes
of how “for agro-based industries such as palm oil, sustainability
goes beyond crunching high numbers in growth and profits”.
It further quotes that IOIC, which has more than 91 oil palm
estates across Malaysia and Indonesia, and is a member of the
Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, has “embedded sustainability
and corporate responsibility in its core values, policy statements
and work practices across its global operations”.
The article also reports Pamol Timur Estate Manager Mr Aplasami
G Paidiah, as saying that the estate’s annual productivity has
regularly surpassed the national average of about 19 tonnes of
fresh fruit bunches (“FFB”) and that this is largely attributable to
the high yielding clones that have been replanted in 60% of the
estate’s plantation area.
Mr Aplasami also talks about IOIC’s pest management measures
for its estates. He is quoted as saying, “Pamol Estate also adopts
integrated pest management via biological means such as the use
of barn owls and a natural sex hormone to control oil palm’s pests.”
The usage of barn owls helps IOIC minimise the use of poisons
and baits which may have repercussions on other harmless animal
species which co-exist in the estates. He also mentions of how
pheromone is used to attract rhinoceros beetles, mostly females,
into getting trapped. Once trapped, these beetles which feed and
breed inside the oil palm trunks will die and will serve as a natural
fertiliser to the oil palm trees.
The other environment-friendly practice at Pamol Estate that the
article features is the transporting of harvested FFBs using buffaloes.
Mr Aplasami is quoted as saying that the use of buffaloes helps the
estate to reduce consumption on fossil fuels and further improve its
carbon footprint performance.
These are only some of the many sustainable practices that IOIC
has adopted as part of its Sustainability Policy. IOIC is driven by
the belief that the sustainability of its business is interdependent
with the sustainability of the environment it operates amidst. Hence,
it strives to continuously improve on its sustainability measures to
ensure that the environment remains as enriched as IOIC is as a
business entity.

centres within the Southern Corridor of Klang Valley which
covers Putrajaya, Kajang, Bangi, Semenyih and Nilai.
Strategically located within the Southern Corridor of Klang Valley
with direct access to all major destinations in the Klang Valley via

settled for a 6KM ride. Some cycling enthusiasts were seen riding
their bicycles into the registration area as early as 6.15 am; some,
with their little children in tow.
The flag off line up included the Yang Dipertua MPSJ, Dato’

INSTALLATION OF
A NEW BEADING PLANT
AT IOI PAN-CENTURY
T
he need to expand IOI Pan-Century Oleochemicals Sdn Bhd’s
production capacity to meet the increasing market demand for
bead products; and at the same time, modernise existing beading
facilities; continue to be a demanding issue.
Hence, in order to meet market demand and customer quality
expectation; and to cut down the dependency on third party tolling
services; the management has sanctioned the construction of a new
beading facility of 120 TPD capacities.
Presently, the two existing beading plants are regularly used to
full capacity, and extra beading needs have to be outsourced
from an external party. Apart from paying tolling charges, close
supervision of packing and stuffing is also required at third party
tolling premises, and these are subject to capacity and availability
when our requirement surpasses the contracted quantity.
Initially, the locating and constructing of the plant in the already
cramped factory site posed a challenge to our project team.
However, they were able to overcome the challenges successfully. To
launch this RM13.5 million new facility, a ground breaking ceremony
was held on 14 September 2013. Construction was completed in
10 months’ time and the new plant was commissioned on 25 July
2014.
The existing two beading plants, Beader 1 and Beader 2 have been
in service for 20 and nine years respectively. With its inherent
manufacturing design, the bead size of products produced by
Beader 1 is in powdery form and is not favoured by multinational
tyre manufacturers such as Bridgestone, Goodyear/Yokohama and
Continental. The setting up of a new and modern beading plant
is one of the crucial considerations made by these manufacturers
in their evaluation of IOI Pan-Century Oleochemicals Sdn Bhd as
an approved supplier.
Three cheers to the project team, and to all those who were directly
or indirectly involved in ensuring the well-executed job!

s a caring corporate citizen, IOI Oleochemicals take its
social obligations to its surrounding community seriously.
It was in line with its corporate responsibility (“CR”)
philosophy that the IOI Oleochemicals Prai Community
Services Committee recently organised a motivational talk
for a group of primary school students.
The talk was on building self-confidence and on 16 August
2014, a group of 70 students from Standards 5 and 6 of
Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil Perai excitedly gathered to
listen to what motivational speaker, Mr A Raghuniswaran had
to share. The speaker cleverly engaged the students with
his motivational stories and helped enrich their minds with
information on how to build self-confidence.
As part of the talk, students were also taken through
interesting games and stories which characterise the art of
building self confidence. A bond obviously began developing
between the speaker and the students during the talk, for all
the students were eager to participate and volunteer during
interactive sessions, and there was no sign of any shyness
among them.

INNOVATION DRIVES IOILC EUROPE:
CROSSING INTO THE FUTURE TOGETHER
By Renee Boerefijn, Director of Innovation
R
otterdam and Wormerveer, the two locations of IOI Loders
Croklaan Europe, a dam and a ferry: places to cross waterways. A
crossing has always been a place where a business starts to grow.
The Rotte river is only a small stream, while the dam was only the
beginning of a huge development that we know as the Port of
Rotterdam today. This is how I like to see innovation: the beginning
of a bigger development.
Innovation is not only done by the Innovation groups – Application
& Technical Support, Global IP, and R&D do not produce or sell the
products that earn our keep. Collaboration and communication,
within Innovation and with other disciplines, are conditions for
speed and success. Each group can contribute to the common goal:
growth.
Our excellent relationship with customers, large and small, gives
us a good insight to their needs, which often revolve around better
product quality, new functionality, and above all, simplification of
customer recipes to reduce cost. Every development must present
a clear value over and above existing solutions. Customers and
competitors thus determine the value of every innovation.
This was the topic at a workshop organised by IOILC Europe
“Sales and Innovation” on 26 August 2014. We must determine
what (monetary) value the function of our ingredients brings
to the customer applications. And that finally defines whether
innovation is sustainable. The challenge is to keep it simple and to
avoid obstacles. These too, are conditions for speed and success.
The technology required to achieve this is something we obtain
from our expertise and collaboration with third parties.
We will focus on projects and segments with a high value and
high probability of success, and make resources available for
proper innovation apart from/instead of me-too products.
Application development must provide proof of functionality
and transfer this to the Sales team and customers. Project
management is required to introduce innovation faster
and with greater success, by improving collaboration and
communication, so that all that are needed are available at
the right time. This way, we build dams and operate ferries
to cross into the future.
FAMILY PICNIC FUN

O
n the sunny 9 August 2014, families of IOI Loders Croklaan
Americas staff gathered at the Community Park in Channahon for
some outdoor fun at the annual company picnic.
It was a barbeque affair with hamburgers, hotdogs, snow cones,
popcorn and ice cream which delighted the young and old. The
families were treated to a host of entertaining activities such as magic
tricks, face-painting, balloon caricatures, and games and prizes by a
local DJ. The Splash Pad also proved to be a hit with the children who
enjoyed cooling off under different types of sprinklers.
One of the highlights for this year’s picnic was the Noah’s Ark
Workshop where the children were able to pick out and stuff a toy
animal to bring home. The adults also joined in the fun by competing
in a friendly game of 16” softball with winners receiving a USD$25

USD$50 gift cards were also given away. It was a fun day for all!

Douglas Uggah Embas led a working visit to IOI Loders Croklaan
and IOI Oleochemicals’ processing plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor on
12 July 2014. Also present were the Ministry’s Secretary-General
Datuk Seri Nurmala Abdul Rahim. The delegates were hosted by
IOI Group Executive Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng and
IOI Corporation Berhad CEO Dato’ Lee Yeow Chor.
After a closed-door Betapol seminar, the delegates were guided
on a tour to Creative Studio, and viewed the production facilities
of IOILC and IOI Oleo. YB Datuk Amar Douglas said at the press
conference, “The local palm oil sector has been driven by the
upstream segment in the past decades. This is set to change its
course with increased contribution from the downstream segment
in the coming years as the future of the palm oil industry in the
country lies in downstream activities.”
Venturing into downstream activities is often capital intensive.
As such, the government, through National Key Economic Areas
(NKEA) for Palm Oil and Rubber, has provided capital expenditure
incentive grants to encourage further downstream investments
through entry point projects (EPP) such as EPP 6 (Developing
High Value Oleo Derivatives and Bio-based Chemicals) and EPP 8
(Expediting Growth in Food and Health-based Segment).
He said that the grants will help focus on producing high value
derivatives and on expanding food and health-based downstream
segments respectively.
Tan Sri Dato’ Lee acknowledged the grant received by IOI Group
by saying, “We are humbled to share that IOI Esterchem is one of
the seven companies which received the EPP 6 grant and we are
thankful for the support received.”

products down the value chain,” he further added.
