Read verses 5:15-21 prayerfully. Remember, the heading of all of this is found in verse 15 when we are called to “look carefully then how you walk.” Everything in our Christian life demands care. The question for this Sunday is: “Why does being filled with the Spirit take care?” Think about this as you prepare. This is a difficult text that demands clear communication. Pray for me as I preach, and pray for our church as we hear. We must understand this essential truth. It is essential for our Christian walk. The voices of a million angels Could not express my gratitude – All that I am, and ever hope to be, I owe it all to Thee VERSE 1 When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died; My richest gain, I count but loss, And pour contempt all o’er my pride. VERSE 2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God; All the vain things that charm me now, I sacrifice them to His blood. VERSE 3 See, from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down; Did ‘er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? VERSE 4 Where the whole realm of nature mine, That were and offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my life, my soul, my all! REFRAIN To God be the glory, To God be the glory, To God be the glory for the things He has done! With His blood, He has saved me; With His power, He has raised me; To God be the glory for the things He has done! BRIDGE Just let me live my life; Let it be pleasing, Lord, to Thee! And should I gain any praise, let it go to Calvary! It is impossible to walk in God’s wisdom, in God’s will, and in God’s Spirit if you are controlled by alcohol. Being drunk undermines everything God intends to do in the life of a believer. Response: The point of this truth is not just about alcohol. The point is that we should not be controlled by anything that would keep us from being controlled by the Spirit. This would include any type of addiction, habit, obsession, or attitude that keeps us from obedience to God. This could include shopping, social media, anger, sports, or family. Is there anything in your life that has control over you or your emotions other than the Holy Spirit of God? Think about this carefully. Spend time on this. If so, ask God to free you from that. Truth: We are commanded to be continually being filled with the Spirit. Being filled with the Spirit means being under the continual control and influence of the Spirit of God. It means walking moment-by-moment under the Spirit’s control. Truth: At salvation we receive the Spirit. When we seek to be filled with the Spirit, we are not seeking something new, but more of what we already have. Being filled with the Spirit is a matter of yielding to the Spirit’s authority over our lives. This means moment-by-moment trusting Him and obeying Him. The more we release control and submit to His authority, the more we are filled with the Spirit. (Romans 12:1-2). Response: Seeking to be filled with the Spirit demands careful examination. Are there actions or attitudes in your life that are quenching the Spirit of God? Seeking to be filled with the Spirit also demands that we look for ways to walk in fuller and more faithful obedience to God. It is not just the removal of sin; it is seeking more obedience. Examine yourself. What needs to be removed? What areas need to be obeyed in greater ways?
