Galston Rotary Club Annual Awards
President’s Welcome
I would like to welcome you all
here tonight to our 33rd awards
presentation. A very special welcome
to the awardees, their families, friends
or work colleagues. It has been a
tradition each year that Galston Rotary
Club honours and acknowledges
members of our community, who have
been nominated by the community,
as an outstanding individual person
in various categories of service and
profession. They can be outstanding
in their work place as an employee,
as a businessperson, or in community
services involvement, and they can be
from any age group.
Our awards tonight are to demonstrate
publicly our appreciation to individual
members of our community who
have shown commitment and indeed
excellence to their field of involvement.
This recognition, we also believe, will
encourage others in our community
to follow their good example,
strengthening and further developing

Lisa Dower - Apprentice/Trainee Award
Ms Lisa Dower is a third year apprentice in hair and beauty at L’Yvonnes Hair Studio
at Round Corner. Lisa is passionate about her profession, is a self-starter and shows
initiative. Lisa is a highly valued member of staff at L’Yvonnes and has progressed
quickly through her apprenticeship showing skills and maturity beyond her age and
expected skill level. Her interpersonal skills combined with her talent in hairdressing
have led to a high level of customer satisfaction. Lisa makes valuable contributions to
the L’Yvonnes tight knit team and is part of a business committed to the very highest
standards of service. As an ex-student of Galston High School, Lisa volunteered
her time and services to the school annual World’s Greatest Shave helping to raise
considerable funds for the Leukaemia foundation. It is with great pride that Galston
High School recommends Ms Lisa Dower as an outstanding candidate for the Galston
Rotary 2016 Apprentice/Trainee Award.
Phoenix Dance Studio - Candice Bandiera - Small Business Award
Candice Bandiera founded Phoenix Dance Studio in 2013 after recognising a need
for such a business in the local Galson Community. Phoenix Dance Studio had its
beginning in the Galston High School Dance Studio and at Parklea Public School.
Within a year Candice had almost 100 dance students and by mid-2015, her business
outgrew the Galston High premises requiring her to find an alternate larger studio.
In 2016, Phoenix Dance Studios has over 250 dance students, employ nine teachers
and operates out of four locations. Candice has built a successful small business
through the implementation of her business plan, a disciplined approach to growth
and the support of her partner and family. Candice is inspiring, instilling confidence,
respect and a sense of responsibility in the young people under her tutelage who
in turn admire her for her personal dance achievements, as a teacher and mentor.
It is with great pleasure that Galston High School recommends Candice Bandiera’s
Phoenix Dance Studio as an outstanding candidate for the Galston Rotary 2016 Small
Business Award.
and enhancing our wonderful local
community.
I would like to take this opportunity on
behalf of all Galston Rotary members
to congratulate all award recipients
here tonight on their outstanding
achievement.

Christopher Limbers – Pride of Workmanship Award
Christopher Limbers is an outstanding teacher. His attention
to detail, love of learning and commitment to the achievement
of his students, make him a highly valued member of staff at
Galston High School. Mr Limbers is a very humble man who
does not seek recognition for himself, but rather works quietly
and professionally with individual students and their families to
achieve optimum outcomes for success in school and ultimately
life. Mr Limbers has been instrumental in the success of the
SmartLink class at Galston High School, where Year 10 students,
who wish to transition from school to work, participate in a
modified curriculum for three days a week and engage in work
experience and job readiness programs for two days per week.
Mr Limbers’ carriage of this class led to 90% of students gaining
an apprenticeship or fulltime employment at the end of 2015. The
remaining 10% of students returned to Year 11 to continue their
studies towards attaining the HSC and are doing well. When not
in the classroom and at school, you will find Mr Limbers meeting
with members of local businesses, parents or assisting at Middle
Dural Public School where he volunteers his time assisting young
students in achieving outcomes in the science curriculum. It is
with great pleasure that Galston High School recommends Mr
Christopher Limbers as an outstanding candidate for the Galston
Rotary 2016 Pride of Workmanship Award.
Zachary Daniel – Youth Award
Zachary Daniel is a Year 11 student at Galston High School who is
an outstanding role model exemplifying the school’s core values
of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. Zach is currently
undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Award and will complete
his Gold Level at the end of 2016. He has been a member of the
Wiseman’s Ferry Rural Fire Service for the past four and a half years
and recently completed his Helmsman Qualification to allow him
to be part of the emergency response boat crew. He is currently
undertaking the Advanced Fire Fighting training which will
provide him with an opportunity to partake in major operations
with the RFS. At school, Zach has been a member of the Student
Representative Council where he contributed to fund raising for
charities such as the Leukaemia Foundation. Zach holds the rank
of Sergeant in the Australian Army Cadets ACU 226 and is both
a leader and mentor to many of his cadet peers. Zach’s career
goal is to join the Australian Defence Force Academy when he
completes his HSC. It is with great pleasure that Galston High
School recommends Zachary Daniel as an outstanding candidate
for the Galston Rotary 2016 Youth Award.

TAS Snap Shot...
Our students are continuing their great
work this semester.
Several Year 11 Construction students
have successfully completed their
first work placement. Early starts were
experience by our students on various
construction sites across Sydney.
Building companies including Davis
Constructions, Billyard Homes, SKM
Construction Pty Ltd, Norwest Building
Services, Choice Concrete Solutions
and SBS Building Constructions,
supervised students for the required
35 hours. Students undertook various
tasks including pipe laying, formwork,
concreting, house renovations and
repairs, flooring and steel frame
installations.
Year 11 Hospitality students also
received
fantastic
reviews
from
employers. Student placements were
right across Sydney, from Wisemans
Ferry to the city. Students worked
in various establishments including
cafes, hotels and hatted restaurants.
Businesses included Glenhaven Catering
Gardens, Aria and Cod & Co in the city,
Flower Power, Ironbark Café at Swanes
Nursery, The Fiddler and the Hills Lodge.
Year 9 & 10 students are currently
showing great food presentation skills.
Recent food products have included
warm charred grilled salads, diabetic
meals and gluten free slices. Outstanding
practical assessment tasks on food
trends have also just been submitted.
Year 9 & 10 Industrial Technology
Timber students are demonstrating
excellent joinery skills. Students are
currently constructing serving Trays and
Pendulum Clock Wall Cabinets. Students
skills are also currently being developed
in wood turning.
Our Year 10 Industrial Technology
Metal students have completed BBQ
utensils and are now fabricating their
spit rotisserie BBQ frames and trays.
Year 9 have successfully submitted
outstanding utility hooks which have
incorporated the skills of hot forging,
riveting and metal machining. Students
this term will be exploring 3D printing
applications within the Metals and
Engineering industry. Students will
utilise this technology to produce
project proto-types later this year.
Wonderful document and jewellery
boxes have also been crafted by our
Year 11 Industrial Technology students.
Students have used an array of
contrasting coloured hardwoods within
their designs.
We wish our current Year 12 students all
the best in their endeavours to complete
their major projects for their HSC. This
year’s projects include a Balsa/Western
Red Cedar Surfboard, an American
Rock Maple/Black Walnut Coffee Table,
Merbau Swinging Bench Seat and an
Australian Jarrah Executive Desk.
Stage 6 Engineering Studies students
have recently enjoyed a break from the
theoretical component of the course
where they have been constructing DC
magnetic induction motors.
Technology Mandatory students have
produced outstanding portfolio work
associated with their practical projects.
Tote Bags, healthy snack food products,
treasure boxes, pencil cases and desk
organisers have been submitted for
assessment. Some students are currently
exploring the potential of recycling and
re using textile materials.
Congratulations again to all our Castle
Hill Show award recipients.

2015 Year Book
The 2015 Yearbook is currently being prepared for the printers. We anticipate that copies will be available early
in Term three.
I apologise for the delay, but unfortunately Ms Duggan’s departure for Masterchef in November 2015 has meant
that we have had to train another staff member in the use of the specific computer program.
When the Yearbook arrives, students who paid for the Yearbook in 2015 will be issued with their copy. Year 12
students from 2015 will have their copy posted home.
Once again, thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter.
Prefect Report...
Being prefect for the past year has been a rewarding
experience with many great opportunities and
memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. Our
group of 10 have worked together very well, with
everyone playing their role and making us feel that we
were always supported with no pressure to attempt to
do everything. As a team, we have grown and learnt
many new skills and personal characteristics that have
benefited us and the school. We have all learnt to be
better public speakers, communicate any issues with
each other in a calm way and ultimately have become
better leaders. It is these skills that we will take with us
into the real world and be able to apply to whatever
our future endeavours entail.
As our time as Prefect draws to an end, it is time to turn
a new page in the book of Galston High School and
embrace the future leaders of the school. As prefect
speeches were on Friday 3 June, our goal as prefects for
now is to elect and support the best possible prefects
for 2017, to ensure that the face of the school continues
to represent the school well, whilst demonstrating the
school's core values.
We as a team, we are excited to see what the new
prefects can bring to the table and we look forward to
fulfilling our last duties as prefects in the best possible
way.
