THE ART AND ENJOYMENT www.nbbqa.org OF BARBECUE SPECIAL DAYS FOR ALL Q’ERS ARE HERE WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Fall has got to be the busiest time of the year if you are a true barbecuer. Especially when you think about how many opportunities you have to fire up the pit or grill. Tailgate parties, block parties and a long Labor Day weekend are just a few excuses to put your barbecue skills to use. This year I would like for everyone to add one more special day to that list. September 11, 2011 will be the 10th anniversary of 9/11. I refuse not to honor all of the brave men and women who displayed what American pride is all about and gave the ultimate sacrifice while trying to save thousands of innocent Americans on that single day. This year that day falls on a weekend which will help everyone give a little more time to remember these fallen heroes. I will be in Derby, KS that weekend at a brand new barbecue event planned around that theme. I challenge each of you to fire up your pit or grill, invite all of your family and friends and help me in remembering those brave Americans on that particular weekend. These heroes are gone but will never be forgotten, and because of their brave actions our pledge of liberty and justice for all will continue. Until next month…keep it smokin’! Kell Phelps NBBQA APPOINTS NEW BOARD MEMBER The National Barbecue Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Gene Goycochea to the Board of Directors. Gene will represent the interests of NBBQA members in Region One, which covers the ten westernmost states— including California, the site of next year’s national conference in San Diego. This position was previously held by Roy Slicker of Slick’s Que Co. in Sisters, Oregon. Roy was selected to become the organization’s President-Elect in March during this year’s national conference in Greenville, South Carolina. He had been serving in both positions until a suitable replacement could be found for the VP spot. “Gene is a very well respected and top-notch participant in the BBQ world,” said Roy. “He is well versed in all the various segments within BBQ, including operators, competitors, associations and vendors. He also has a business background that will undoubtedly help the NBBQA grow throughout the west and beyond.” Ronald Slawek Pigchaser, Inc.
