Whether you are buying or selling property, a real estate transaction is complicated. Having someone knowledgeable to guide you through the process helps you avoid delays and costly mistakes. The Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS® suggests choosing a REALTOR® to assist you in buying or selling your property. The average consumer doesn’t know the difference between a real estate agent and a REALTOR®. A REALTOR® is a real estate agent that belongs to a Local, State, and the National Association of REALTORS®. Currently there are over 1,650 Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS® members and more than 1.2 million members of the National Association of REALTORS®. The National Association of REALTORS® requires its members to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics. The practical business principles embodied in the Code of Ethics are duties to clients; cooperation with other brokers; truthfulness in statements and advertising; and respect for exclusive relationships other REALTORS® have with their clients. REALTORS® are offered educational courses, professional development opportunities, and designation courses through membership. They attend meetings and conferences at local, state, and national levels to further enhance their skills and network among peers to exchange ideas. Learn more about REALTOR® Designations and Certifications that acknowledge experience and expertise in various real estate sectors. REALTORS® do more than just list and sell real estate. REALTOR® members of the Greater Greenville Association of REALTORS® feel strongly about community involvement. GGAR works in conjunction with the Greenville County public school system to provide Christmas gifts to needy children through the “Care and Share” program. Since 1996, GGAR has presented scholarships to area high school seniors from the proceeds from the Lobs, Links and Lanes charity event. After much discussion between the Community Service Committee and the general membership, 2012 was the last year these scholarships were presented. The Lobs, Links and Lanes charity event will continue to be held and the proceeds with benefit two local charities: The Frazee Dream Center and ReWiGo Ministries. “Revitalization Awards” are also presented annually to members of the community who have “revitalized” a property by investing a substantial amount of time and money in a property that acted as a catalyst to improve the community. GGAR members also actively participate in legislative advocacy. GGAR has on staff a full-‐ time Governmental Affairs Director to keep members informed on local issues and to represent members at local meetings. Members meet with legislators at functions such as Conferences, Legislative Breakfasts, Receptions, and the annual GGAR Oyster Roast to discuss issues that affect REALTORS® as well as consumers. According to the National Association of REALTORS® the strongest five attributes of REALTORS® are: 1. Best network of sources to help buyers and sellers 2. Best qualified to promote the sale of your home 3. Professional 4. Ensures process conducted with ethics and integrity 5. Getting the job done properly So when you decide to purchase your home, consider the knowledge and expertise of a REALTOR® and look for the REALTOR® trademark. Only those individuals who hold REALTOR® membership are licensed to use the REALTOR® trademarks. To find out if your real estate agent is a REALTOR®, ask if your agent is a REALTOR® or contact your local real estate association.
