ABOUT PERTH
Famous for its relaxed and easygoing lifestyle, Perth is a multicultural hub that has a range of activities
to enjoy in your spare time from art galleries, museums, theatres and dining, to sports and beach
going. Not only is Perth a great base for exploring Australia's western attractions, but it‟s also an easily
accessible gateway to Asia.
Perth is a progressive and modern city that has maintained a rich sense of heritage. Full of nightlife,
markets, parks and marine activities, you‟ll never run out of things to do in Australia‟s sunniest city.
Western Australia‟s capital is very marine-focused, with plenty of river and beach activities available for
your outdoor enjoyment. Fremantle, Perth‟s neighbouring port city, is also a very popular marine
attraction to its relaxed locals, and Rottnest Island is only a short ferry ride away. Boating, fishing and
surfing are only some of Perth‟s many marine attractions.
“From music and models to designers and sculptors, Western Australia is a breeding ground for
innovative minds, unique talents and fresh ideas.” (Source: www.westernaustralia.com)

including computer labs, are fully fitted with state of the art workstations to allow students to follow
the directions of the lecturer in real time. All rooms are air conditioned and comfortable for students
and lecturers. A purpose-built Green Room is located on Ground Floor level along with a large range of
recording studios, film editing suites and postproduction suites.

Students have areas on campus dedicated for their use in class breaks and studio downtime. These
areas include leather lounges, with students also having access to kitchen facilities to enable them to
prepare and/or store food while they are on campus.
STUDENT ADMINISTRATION
Student Administration is located on the first floor along with Campus Academic Coordinators.
Lecturing staff are located on the second floor. Administration facilities available to students include
access to the administration server where documents can be secured, shared, transferred and stored.

Borrowing policy
In order to borrow items from the library, a student must have a current, valid library account.
Students may have a total of five (5) items booked out at any one time, consisting of a maximum two
(2) discs. Items loaned to students must be returned to the library, in appropriate condition, during
library opening hours. Library items may only be signed in/out by the Library Coordinator or
authorized administration personnel.
Loan Period
General Collection items may be loaned for one (1) week. Reserve Collection items have varied loan
periods. They may be designated not for loan, two (2) hour, one (1) day or two (2) day loan. Discs
and Media Collection items are loaned overnight. Reference items are not for loan.
LIBRARY ITEMS MAY ONLY BE SIGNED IN/OUT BY THE LIBRARY COORDINATOR OR AUTHORIZED
ADMINISTRATION PERSONNEL.
Overdue fines & penalties
Students with overdue library items will be charged a separate overdue fine for each item, per day
the library item is overdue (not including library closure dates).
General Collection items are fined at $1.00 per day overdue.
Reserve, Discs and Media Collection items are fined at $2.00 per day overdue.
Library fines are payable directly to library or administration staff.
When a library item becomes overdue, no further resources may be borrowed whilst items and/or
fees are outstanding. If library items become overdue by more than one week, a misdemeanour shall
be recorded, and the student may not be able to make studio or equipment bookings.
Any item considered damaged or lost will incur full replacement costs (equal to the current retail
value and delivery of the item), and will be charged an additional fee of $20. Where an item is four or
more weeks overdue, it will be assumed that the item is lost. If items or fines remain outstanding
upon course completion, exam results, certificates and other awards may not be issued.
Access to Resource & Information Services
External research and information sources may be obtained through various libraries in the Perth
region. We recommend the State Library of Western Australia, which offers free membership. To
contact the State Library, call (08) 9427 3111 or email info@slwa.wa.gov.au


All students and guests must have their I.D. Cards/Guest Passes visible at all times.

All students and their guests MUST wear appropriate footwear at all times.
Booking Workstation Time (Three weeks in advance)

Students have access to specific workstations over the duration of the program.

Students can access booking sheets up to two weeks in advance at any time by consulting the
appropriate noticeboards.

All advance workstation and equipment bookings are subject to priority and made only under
supervision of their lecturer.

Students wishing to make advance bookings must request access to the future booking sheets
from their lecturer.

When booking time on the studio or equipment booking sheets, students MUST enter their full
name and course code for each booking. Where students have failed to use their full name and
course code, the booking will be deleted without notification and the time made available to
other students.

Students are limited to one four-hour workstation advance booking for each workstation per
week depending on access and availability.

Recording studio bookings are limited to four-hour periods commencing at 10am, 2pm and
6pm.

when items signed out on Friday need to be returned on Monday at 10am. Longer bookings
are subject to strict approval by the course co-ordinator.

Access to other facilities will not be allowed until the student has undergone the appropriate
training in the use of the workstation.

Under no circumstances are students permitted to book time on behalf of other students, or
under the name of another student. This constitutes fraud and will be severely dealt with.

Under no circumstances will advance bookings be taken over the telephone or by email. You
must attend classes in order to book time.

If a student has had a session cancelled by a member of staff, it is for a reason and re-booking
the session will not be permitted. Staff reserve the right to suspend bookings at any time
without notice.

Students are allowed and encouraged to work in pairs or small groups. Not only will this make
practical learning easier and more enjoyable, but students will be able to accrue studio hours
faster.
Booking Workstation Time (Three days in advance)
Students may book any available extra time within three days of the current date in the current week.
(i.e. If it is Monday, you may book any free sessions up until and including Wednesday.)
NOTE: All 3-day rule bookings must be sighted, confirmed and initialed by a supervisor BEFORE being
entered on the booking sheet. When booking sessions in this manner, you must indicate on the sheet
that the booking is a 3-day booking to avoid confusion with regard to advance bookings. All 3-day
rule bookings are limited to one 4-hour session per studio per day. Any and all unconfirmed 3-day
rule bookings will be deleted.
Late Arrival Cancellation for Workstation Bookings
Late arrival to your Practical session, of more than 15 minutes duration, will result in a cancellation. If
you are going to be late for a session, you are obliged to notify the Supervisor by phone to ensure that
the Workstation is reserved for you. Where you have telephoned in advance, the workstation will be
reserved for you until 30 minutes after the booked start time of the session.
Qantm College: Campus Guide – Perth
9
Cancellation of Workstation Booking by Student
Should you be unable to attend a practical session, SAE and Qantm require that 24 hours notice be
given. Failure to attend a practical session without giving such notice will result in a „NO-SHOW‟ being
administered. This will result in your next booked practical session being cancelled. No excuses are
accepted without a Doctor‟s certificate. Three „No-Shows‟ against a student will result in a meeting
with the Head of the Audio Department. Failure to provide 24 hours notice of cancellation of a booked
session may result in a fine being imposed.
Short Notice Workstation Booking (24 Hour Rule)
You may book a workstation for later that day or for the following day, if it is available. This is known
as the „24-HOUR BOOKING‟ rule. The Studio Supervisor‟s administer the 24-hour Booking.
Bookings for the following day under the 24 Hour booking rule are restricted to 4 hours per
workstation. There is no limit to the amount of time that may be booked on the day. For this purpose,
„on the day‟ bookings will be taken from 10am onwards.
Walk–In Studio Access
Students may use any workstation if it is available and not in use, provided that the student has
received training in the use of that workstation.
Studio and Equipment Prerequisites
The use of certain studios and equipment is limited to students enrolled in a particular period of study
or trimester and thereafter. Please contact your course co-ordinator for more information.
Care of Workstations and Fines
Students are required to exercise care when using the workstation areas. The following guidelines
must be followed:

Food and drink must not be taken into any studio under any circumstances, by either students
or their guests. Severe penalties will be imposed for any breach of this rule.

Students must not tamper with, re-configure, re-patch, unplug, re-route etc. any SAE and
Qantm equipment, physical or virtual. Severe penalties will be imposed for breach of this rule.

Workstations and studios must be clean and tidy on completion of any sessions. Chairs are to
be parked in an orderly manner.

All microphone stands, etc. and accessories are to be placed in an orderly manner.
All
equipment is to be returned to the Supervisor and signed in.

Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in an immediate cancellation of your next
booking.

Report any damaged or malfunctioning equipment to the Studio Supervisors immediately
Equipment Use
Any equipment required for a session must be signed out of the audio office prior to use. Upon
completion of a session, all equipment used must be returned and signed in by a member of staff.
Failing to correctly check equipment out or back in will result in a fine being imposed.
FINE= $ 5.00
NOTE: Students are required to provide their own headphones for workstation use. Headphones are
for artist recording purposes only. Students who need to sign out a pair of headphones for workstation
use will have to pay the above fine as an equipment hire fee.
Qantm College: Campus Guide – Perth
10
Food & Drinks
Eating, drinking is strictly forbidden at or in any of the studios or workstations by any student or their
guests. The fridge in the kitchen is provided for students to store food or drinks. At no time should
food or drinks be kept in the studios, even if they are closed or empty. Students found to be
consuming or in possession of food or drinks will have session time cancelled and/or be fined.
FINE= $ 5.00
Normalising the Console and Studio
Students must ensure that the workstation used is fully normalised at the end of each session:

Knobs and buttons are returned to their default positions.

All devices and peripherals are powered down.

Microphone stands are fully collapsed and neatly stored.

All microphone leads are properly rolled up and stored.

Any rubbish is disposed of. (E.g. CD wrappers, channel scribble strips, broken guitar strings
etc)
FINE= $ 5.00
Leaving A Session
A Student‟s session is considered over when the next booked session starts or at the time that the
school closes for the day. Please make sure that you are ready to leave the studio at this time. (i.e. if
your session runs from 10 till 2, you do not start packing up at 2.) Running overtime is unfair on your
fellow students and supervisors and will be penalised accordingly.
FINE= $ 5.00 per 15 minutes or part thereof
Recording Session
When booking a control room for recording purposes, please make sure that you book the appropriate
recording space for the same time. Recording Rooms are connected to multiple workstations and
booking a particular control room does not automatically ensure that you have the use of the recording
space desired.
NOTE: At certain times of the year, recording time is at a premium. It is imperative that all recording
sessions are cancelled with 24 hours notice if you cannot make the booked time.
FINE= $ 10.00

ACCOMMODATION
Although the SAE Institute and Qantm College Perth Campus does not provide accommodation for
students, we can provide some great contacts to ensure students find the best possible
accommodation for their needs during their stay in Perth. When students first arrive, they may initially
wish to stay in a hotel, backpackers‟ hostels, or nearby student-specific residences. Many students
later decide to rent or share an apartment or house.
Below are some of the many options available. Please contact the accommodation services directly for
more information about facilities, services and costs. We recommend maps.google.com.au to check out
the location of these sites and their proximity to the campuses.
STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
AU$300–$560 per week
There are a number of agencies that assist overseas students in finding accommodation soon after
arrival in Australia. For more information about these services, visit
http://australia.accommodationforstudents.com/Perth.asp
Homestay
AU$200–$270 per week
Homestay is a great way for younger international students to immerse themselves in Australian life,
and benefit from the safety and supervision of adults. Meals are usually included in the cost, but selfcatering homestay is sometimes available. Check out www.homestaynetwork.com.au
Hostels and Guesthouses
AU$100–$300 per week
Hostels are usually run by organisations such as Youth Hostels Australia (YHA) and the Young Mens‟
Christian Association (YMCA). Students usually share kitchen and bathroom facilities.
Shared Accommodation
AU$150–$300 per week
Sharing off-campus accommodation is very popular with international students. You should look for
advertisements on campus notice boards and in local newspapers. You should be prepared to provide
your own furniture, as many housing options are not entirely specific to student needs. To search for
shared accommodation online, try www.realestate.com.au/share, www.domain.com.au/share and
perth.gumtree.com.au
Rental Accommodation
AU$280+ per week
When renting a house or apartment, landlords require rent to be paid in advance, and will require a
security bond equal to one months‟ rent. Studios and one-bedroom apartments in Perth are often
expensive, so shared accommodation is recommended. To search for rental properties online, check
out http://www.realestate.com/rent and www.domain.com.au/rent
Qantm College: Campus Guide – Perth
14
It is recommended that students lease properties only through approved agents and landlords. See the
Real Estate Institute of West Australia website for more information.
http://reiwa.com.au/Pages/Home.aspx For a list of recommended accommodation in Perth, ask our
administration staff on campus.
