FROM THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Welcome back to your alma mater! I expect that you may be both surprised and pleased to
see many of the big changes that have occurred since you marched across the Quadrangle
50 years ago. I am honored that you will march again behind the bagpiper, this time leading
your newest fellow alumni into the future. The Class of 1964 is part of the foundation for all
that you see around you.
Events during your senior year—from the escalation of the war in Vietnam and the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy to the passage of the Civil Rights Act—
forecast many of the challenges of the decades to come. Yours was a tumultuous time in
history, and as you began to re-set the national tone, your combined voices and actions
joined with others to precipitate profound and lasting change.
In fact, your unique URI spirit of optimism prevailed just before your graduation when many
of your classmates in That Ram Band shared their Rhody Pride with thousands at the
1964 World’s Fair in New York.
At URI, Francis “Fran” Horn was president. In-state tuition was about $250, out-of-state
tuition $750. Of the 4,301 undergraduates on campus at the time, men outnumbered women
by nearly 2 to 1. There were also 948 graduate students. On the Kingston Campus, Fogarty
Hall opened to house the College of Pharmacy, the historic Watson Farm House (ca. 1790)
was first restored, and the 2,300 acre W. Alton Jones Campus in West Greenwich was
bestowed to the University.
In your class of 1964, there were 755 undergraduate, 172 master’s, and 21 doctoral
degrees awarded, including the class of 15 graduates from the Providence Campus. This
weekend we will award more than 3,000 undergraduate and 700 graduate degrees. The
thousands of graduating students represent us all. Like you, they are part of our present and
are transforming our future.
As we see in you, our alumni, URI has long been a university that prepares its students to
be competitive, to be innovative, and to lead. That is more important than ever. We have
boldly defined ourselves as a diverse community of talented people who constantly
“Think Big.”
I invite the Class of 1964 to actively support your university’s 21st century transformation as
one of the premiere institutions in the world.

Past 50 years: I am the owner of Ross Aker Furniture. I
am a 15-year USMC retired major, served as president of
the Exeter Town Council for two years, and was a member
of the council for four years. I am also involved with the
4-H Foundation, the Exeter Fire District Board, Helicopter
Skiing, Guardian Honor Flight for WWII Vets. I’m on the
Exeter–West Greenwich Regional School Committee. I have
traveled extensively throughout the world.

Fondest URI Memory: I was active in the University
Theatre all four years. I was an RA in Adams and known as
“Dudley-Do-Right.”
Past 50 years: Upon graduating, I went to Princeton Theological Seminary. In June of 1967, I was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. I went on to serve churches in Nebraska,
New York, Virginia, and New Jersey. I retired in June 2007. I
remain active in the church through various leadership roles
and guest preaching.

Fondest URI Memory: My fraternity, Sigma Pi, was “raided”
by the pledge class from Sigma Pi Colony at Worcester
Polytech, who were using walkie talkies that were set on the
same frequency as URI campus police. It drove our campus
cops crazy.
Past 50 years: I married Lil in 1965 and graduated from
Andover Newton Theological School in 1968. l served
American Baptist churches in Margate City, New Jersey;
Carnegie, Penn.; Johnstown, Penn.; Port Dickinson, N.Y.;
and Greenfield, Mass. I’ve been active in the Lions Club
in the places where we have lived. In 1993, I earned a
Doctor of Ministry degree at the Theological School of Drew
University in Madison, N.J. I’ve been to Israel, Brazil, and
Honduras. I’m currently active in the Southern Tier Bicycle
Club, with whom I bicycle 30-40 miles twice a week.

Hillel mixer at the Union in September 1962.
Past 50 years: We moved to Florida as full-time residents
in 1994. Sandy and I enjoy traveling and have seen a lot of
the world. I still work part time with our daughter (Lisa, b.
1972), who assumed the presidency of our company two
years ago.

Past 50 years: One week after graduation, I married my
wife, Stephanie, and we will be celebrating our 50th wedding
anniversary this year on June 20th.
I started my first job in July 1964 as an electrical engineer
at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, Conn., and received my
master’s degree from UConn while working at Sikorsky.
In January 1969 I was hired by Raytheon Co. in
­Portsmouth, R.I., where I spent the rest of my career, first
as a project engineer and then as an engineering manager.
We lived in Seekonk, Mass., raising three children, Rick,
Brian, and Alison. They are all married and we have five
beautiful grandchildren—three girls and two boys.
I was an avid sailor for 37 years, sailing on Narragansett
Bay, Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod, and Long Island Sound.
I am past commodore of the Bristol Yacht Club. Since retiring in December 2002, we have been spending October
through May at our condo in Naples, Fla., where I served as
president of the SW Florida URI Alumni Chapter for three
years. We return to Seekonk to spend the summer months.
We enjoy spending time with friends and family, and I am
looking forward to the 50th class reunion.

Fondest URI Memory: Down the line—we’d go down the
line for beer, pizza, or meatball sandwiches all too often. I
returned to campus after 30-plus years away as an advisor for the Business School; after mock interviews, etc., the
M.B.A. candidates asked if I would like to go down the line
for a few beers. Some things never change!
Past 50 years: After graduation I became an Air Force officer and spent five and a half years in the USAF. Met my
wife, Diana, there; she was an Air Force nurse, and our two
children were born while I served.

After the Air Force, I went to work for the predecessor
company of Viskase Corp. I worked for more than 30 years
at Viskase in various financial and operational management
positions.
At retirement, in 2000, I was executive vice president,
worldwide operations, and traveled extensively to my plants
in Brazil, France, and the UK, as well as the U.S. plants.
We have retired to East Tennessee, where we live on a
huge lake and enjoy boating, lots of golf, and travel.

Fondest URI Memory: I was able to fulfill my required
quota through a deal I worked out with the fraternity across
the street from the dental hygiene clinic. All pledges were
expected to come to me to have their teeth cleaned—a
never-ending supply of patients!
Past 50 years: I’m still a practicing dental hygienist, saving
America’s teeth, now two days a week. More recently I am
an organic farmer, taught by my son, who had a 100-member CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in New Jersey.
He has since moved on to the North Shore of Oahu, so we
are forced to visit every February. This year will be our 12th
trip to soak up the aloha. I found a local farmer who lets me
“work for vegetables.” We sell to local farmers’ markets in
season. Great fun.

Fondest URI Memory: I enjoyed the “Ramnapped!” article
and picture in Quadangles (Fall 2013 issue). I was the
student who washed and trimmed the ram before football
games and other events!
Past 50 years: After earning my M.S. in animal nutrition in
1966, I worked as a research assistant at UConn and married. We raised two children there.
In 1989 I retired and we moved to a small farm in the
foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in beautiful Western
North Carolina.
My son, Billy, helps me out on the farm, where I still
maintain a sheep flock. My daughter, Robin, a graduate of
UConn, resides in Connecticut with her husband, Bill, and
her two sons, Matthew and Justin.

Fondest URI Memory: After Paradigm (the then literary
magazine) created great controversy for printing the word
“f**k,” Dr. Warren Smith (aka Sexy Smith), may he rest in
peace, refused to call me Nada. Instead, he addressed me
as Nan. After all, Nada is a four letter word.
Past 50 years: Education: Master of Arts, with
honors, english and comparative literature, Columbia

Career (latest first): Retired, so now part-time teacher,
literature and Judaics, adult education Melton Program.

Fondest URI Memory: College life in the 1960s was quite
different from today. Female students had to sign in and out
when leaving the dorm in the evening. No men were allowed
to enter dorm rooms. There was no phone in my freshman
dorm room. There were three pay phones in the downstairs
hall lobby. There was one TV for all students in the dorm
with limited viewing hours. We had room inspections,
curfews, and a practice of “in loco parentis.”
Past 50 years: In the fall of 1999, I retired after teaching
family and consumer science for 25 years in Worcester,
Mass. I moved to Maryland to live with my daughter and
her family.
I enjoy being involved in my grandsons’ lives. I love
to travel and visit new places. I have been on numerous
cruises, bus trips, and day trips. I am active in my church,
the local senior center, and belong to several social groups.
I look forward to connecting with friends from my college
days.

Past 50 years: Jimmy, who sadly passed away in 2003,
went on to law school and enjoyed a satisfying career as a

Fondest URI Memory: The most memorable moment was
when two of my fraternity brothers, Bob Shorten and Mike
O’Rourke, decided to steal the Brown University bear just
before the annual Brown–URI football game.
The plan was to return the bear at halftime to the Brown
contingent. They reconnoitered the bear cage the week
before the game and had a “foolproof game plan.” On Friday
night before the game, they removed the rear seat of Bob’s
car to make a space for the bear and headed to Providence
armed with bolt cutters and a jar of honey. They succeeded
in snapping several locks and in enticing the bear into the
back seat area of Bob’s car with the honey.
On the way out of Providence, they were stopped by a
policeman because one of the car’s headlights was blown
out. When the cop approached the car, he almost dropped
his teeth seeing the bear in the back.
Long story short, the Brown University bear handlers
were called to retrieve their animal, but the bear didn’t want
to leave the car. We think he now liked his two new friends
who had given him honey. In the process of removing the
bear from the car, the interior was shredded, to the chagrin
of the good-natured pranksters.
The Dean of Students didn’t think the affair was too
funny, as both Bob and Mike were put on probation for a
semester.
Past 50 years: Tour of duty in Vietnam; career in the
construction industry in the Boston area; being married to
the best wife one could hope for; two great kids and four
wonderful grandkids; spending time in the sun on the golf
course in Naples.

Past 50 years: We have been married 48
years and lived in Mass., N.Y., Mich., and Penn., and retired
to New Hampshire. We’ve been here 11-plus years. We
keep busy volunteering at church, senior citizen center, Red
Cross, etc.
Have traveled to all 50 states. Life is good, and we are
blessed with a wonderful family and friends. I have enjoyed
getting back to painting and belong to the Saxtons River
Art Guild.

Alex’s Fondest URI Memory: Among my best memories
are those of “Greek week,” held every spring, with intrafraternity competitions. My house routinely won.
Alex’s Past 50 years: My initial employment involved
commissioning of large fossil fuel-fired steam generators for
public utilities and industrial processes, with 15 moves in our
first 10 years after graduation.
That experience—along with the support of an
understanding and similarly-inclined partner, Carol—led to
12 more moves with 7 more employers for the rest of
my 45-year career in paper mill and waste management
operations.
I retired in what is now Macau, China, in 2009, after
having worked and lived 15 of the final 18 years overseas. I
married Carol, who is also class of ’64 (and will likely report
further for herself in the Grist), two months after graduation,
and we have two children and one grandson. Son Jason,
his wife, Angela, and their son, Kyle, live in Utah. Daughter
Emilie lives in Portsmouth, N.H.
Carol’s Fondest URI Memory: The never ending bridge
game in the Sigma Kappa Social Room and the life-long
friends. “Studying” at the beach, etc.
Carol’s Past 50 years: I married Alex just after graduation
in 1964. Our life has been a great adventure; we’ve traveled
all over the U.S. and the world with his job. I’ve had the
opportunity to teach in several foreign countries and make a
very culturally diverse group of friends. Our family is small,
but close and strong—what more could one want?

Past 50 years: Jackie and I have two children, each with
two children. Our son and family live in Vermont, and our
daughter and family live in southern California. The ages of
our grandchildren, whom we thoroughly enjoy, range from
three to nine.
After graduating from URI, I received a master’s degree
in mathematics at Bucknell University. I was employed as
a systems engineer at the MITRE Corporation in Bedford,
Mass. While working at MITRE as a middle manager for
33 years, my family and I lived in Belgium, Germany, and
Italy for a total of seven years; spending those seven years
abroad was perhaps one of the highlights of my professional
careeer.
Early in my years at MITRE, to satisfy my ROTC commitment, I served for two years in the Corps of Engineers
and spent a year in Vietnam (Bronze Star Medal and Army
Commendation Medal).
Upon retiring from MITRE at the age of 55, my wife and I
opened the Rivendell House B&B in Bethel, Maine. Running
a B&B was a long-time aspiration of ours and, until just last
month when we retired for the second time, we thoroughly
enjoyed welcoming guests from around the world.
Since my retirement from MITRE, I have been very active as a volunteer in various nonprofit organizations, such
as the Appalachian Mountain Club (distinguished service
award), Chamber of Commerce (president), Historical
Society (president), Town Planning Board (chair for nine
years), head of trustees for the Congregational Church, and
in general have served as a community activist.
Jackie and I have traveled extensively in Europe and
the U.S.; our favorite destination has been Switzerland,
where we have hiked many times. We continue to enjoy
outdoor activities (hiking, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing,
and kayaking). It has been a full life since graduating
from URI!

Fondest URI Memory: We eloped and got married on
December 30, 1960. We are still married 53 years later.
Past 50 years: As a couple, we received the 1997 Appie
of the Year from the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC).
Henry received the Marian Pychowska Award (given to AMC
volunteers who have contributed at least 96 hours of work
in one year). We have both received the AMC Stewardship
Award every year since its inception. We enjoy being in
the woods, working with friends to improve hiking trails by
building bridges and boardwalks, and combating erosion
and mud.

Past 50 years: Married in 1965 to Barbara Frost. Sales

Fondest URI Memory: Funniest sign ever: At Homecoming, a clever person put up a sign outside Upper College
entrance that said “Blow Horn before entering.”

Fondest URI Memory: One of my not-so-fond memories
was that for four years, every semester I had a Saturday
morning class. How could I have been so lucky? A serious
sad memory was on leaving a 1 p.m. class on Friday, November 22, 1963, to learn that President Kennedy had been
killed in Dallas.
Past 50 years: After several years in the military with tours
in Asia and Europe, I ended up marrying a girl from my
home town. We had attended all the same schools and URI.
But with four years difference in age, I would be leaving a
school in June and she would be starting in September.
After leaving the military, I worked for several companies
in different positions. Finally, I joined Electric Boat at
Quonset. In 1995 I took a position at EB’s Groton facility.
This past November, I recieved my 30-year service award.
In 2005 my wife and I went on our dream vacation trip to
Ireland. The trip was made more enjoyable by having my
son and his wife accompany us. I won the Irish Whiskey
Tasting Contest at the Jameson distillery. Two years later
my son and his wife gave birth to Elizabeth and Christopher,
and two years later Andrew joined us.

Fondest URI Memory: There were many! Graduating

commuting group stopping every Friday afternoon on the

Past 50 years: There are many memories. However, marrying my high school sweetheart and having my two children
(Dina and Carmine III) and four grandchildren (Dominic,

Fondest URI Memory: I will always remember the good
times had at the annual Lambda Chi Alpha Ranch Dance!
Past 50 years: Since graduating from URI, I have lived in 7
different states and have worked for 12 companies.
Presently, I live with my wife, Connie, in Plymouth, Mass.
We were married in 1970 in Alexandria,Va. We have two
sons, Jason and Clinton, who live nearby. Jason is the father
of our two grandchildren, Anna and Nathan.
Having graduated from URI with a B.S. in electrical engineering, more than 35 years of my career were spent in the
design and development of medical diagnostic instruments
for large and small medical companies.
Over the years I have kept in touch with many of my
fraternity brothers from Lambda Chi Alpha. Most of these
connections were in mini-reunions held both at URI and
elsewhere. In 2002 I moved to San Diego; here I was
fortunate to meet a fellow classmate and fraternity brother,
Norman Shorrock ’64.
In San Diego I worked from 2002–2007 for AutoGenomics, a start-up company. As director of electrical engineering,
I made a significant contribution in the design of an automated DNA analyzer. This instrument is currently being used
by many commercial labs in screening for genetic disorders,
cancers, and other diagnostic tests related to personalized
medicine.
In 2007 my wife and I returned to our home in Holliston,
Mass. Not ready for retirement, in 2008 we moved to
Plymouth, Mass., and started our own company, Mayflower
Mobility. Based on work in which my wife had more than ten
years of experience, Mayflower Mobility sells residential stair
lifts, wheelchair ramps, and other related durable medical
equipment.
Our present home is in a 55 years-plus development
located in the Pinehills area of Plymouth. We love to travel
when we can. In September of this year, Connie and I went
on an awesome 23-day trip to Italy and Greece. In my spare
time I am restoring my 1970 Fiat 124 Spyder convertible.
This past spring I took golf lessons and hope to play more
golf next year.

I reentered the workforce in 1985 when Paul took an early
retirement from the steel industry, managing small clothing
stores for large retail chains while getting a second degree
in education, and then I taught middle school science for five
years. My sister lives nearby and we mostly spend time with
family and friends. We enjoy reading, gardening, and resting
here in Dover, Penn.

Paul’s Past 50 years: I married Barbara two weeks after
graduation, started a 21-year career with Bethlehem Steel
Company in the steelmaking division in Baltimore, and
traveled by mini-motor-home throughout the eastern USA. I
then went on to a 22-year career in golf-course management
while living in Maryland and south central Pennsylvania.
Barbara and I raised three daughters on our
Pennsylvania farm. I have had a growing involvement
(44 years) in Rotary (originally sponsored by fellow URI
graduate and fellow Chi Phi frat brother Herb Dawley), spent
five years tutoring with the York Literacy Council, initiated a
community garden in York, Penn., achieved green sanctuary
certification for my church congregation, spent four years as
fire police volunteer for the local fire department, 16 years
in Big Brothers, acted as past president of the Maryland
Industrial Management Society, and past president of the
West York, Penn., Rotary Club. I am a volunteer tutor at
Crispus Attucks inner city social service agency and the
local school district.
Travels have included vacation trips to Europe and China
and humanitarian missions with Rotary to South America
and Africa. Interests continue to be reading, gardening,
bike riding, and chess. We live in Dover, Penn., close to our
grandson, and travel to Maine on vacation. We will soon be
traveling to the Georgia low country periodically to visit our
oldest daughter and son-in-law. Give us a shout and we will
stop on the way.
Barbara’s Past 50 years: I entered the workforce with
Baltimore Biological Lab but found the work unfulfilling. I
switched to a management training program for Hutzler’s
department stores, which led to a buyer’s position in the
fabrics d
­ epartment.
In 1970 I saw the birth of the first of my three daughters.
I spent 15 years out of the workforce as a full-time mom.
We moved from Baltimore in 1979 to a small farm in central
Penn., raised the kids, grew some vegetables, and fattened
some sheep, goats, and chickens.

Past 50 years: Subsequent to my graduation from URI, I
attended NYU Graduate School of Business Administration, receiving an M.B.A. I then entered military service as a
commissioned officer serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. I was
promoted to commanding officer of the 483rd field service
company and received a Bronze Star.
After completing my military service, I joined the accounting firm then known as Arthur Young & Co., becoming a certified public accountant. In 1974 I formed my own investment
company specializing in the fields of housing and hotels. The
firm has investments in multi-family residential properties
located in New York, New Jersey, and Georgia, as well as
operations in the hospitality business in New York City.
My wife, Paulette, and I have two grandchildren. Our main
residence is in New York City. We are also fortunate enough
to have homes in Bridgehampton, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro.
I am most appreciative of the education that the University
provided me, giving me the tools needed in my career. I have
enduring friendships from my college days that will always be
treasured and remain a part of my life forever.

Past 50 years: Immediately after graduation, I entered the
U.S. Air Force. I served a distinguished 25-year career,
earning the rank of full colonel. I retired in 1989 in a formal
ceremony held at a significant battle ground of the Revolutionary War, the Old North Bridge in Concord, Mass. After
completing my service, I held several senior management
positions in the private sector before starting my own management consulting firm.
Married 46 years to a remarkable woman, Cecelia
Amman. We have wonderful twin daughters and three
beautiful grandchildren. Ceci and I have traveled
extensively, living in Japan, the Panama Canal Zone, Ohio,
Missouri, Georgia, Alabama, and Massachusetts. We have
vacationed in England, Scotland, Italy, and France. We have

Fondest URI Memory: The friends and experiences that I

Past 50 years: I have been blessed with a wonderful wife
and two great boys (both URI graduates) who now have
careers in Connecticut and central New York.
I have worked as a civil engineer, facilities engineer, and
manager for the government, the state, the town of West
Warwick, and private companies. I served in the U.S. Army
and R.I. National Guard, retiring as a Colonel. Fully retired,
I help out at church and with the Boy Scouts. Thanks to the
Army, I have seen quite a bit of the world, which makes me
very thankful to have been born, raised, and continue to live

Past 50 years: Received a B.S. in home economics/nutrition. Completed a dietetic internship at Harper Hospital,
Detroit, Mich., in 1968. Worked as a registered dietitian
for 40 years in private practice, as a consultant to nursing
homes and as a clinical dietitian at RI Hospital and Memorial
Hospital of Rhode Island, from which I retired in 2006.
In 1969 I married David T. Galloway (class of ’81), and
we have three children: Jana Osborne in Georgia; Taryn
Galloway, Ph.D., in Norway, and Ian Galloway in Texas. We
also have two granddaughters: SuSu, in Georgia, and Anna
Linnea Kolberg, in Norway.
I served for four years as historian and six years (20082014) on the executive board of the Northeast district
chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, currently as president. I’m
a member of the Scituate Scholarship Foundation and the
Friends of Saint Elizabeth Home, where my husband and I
volunteer weekly.

Fondest URI Memory: I remember the first Homecoming
Weekend in October 1960. Back then we had curfews for
the women. Many of the women chose to “go home for the
weekend” but intended to be at motels for the big weekend. One individual was a close friend of Dean Eastwood’s
daughter and signed out as spending the weekend at the
Dean’s house with her friend. Well, she got caught and was
suspended for two weeks. Many other coeds were discovered to have lied about their weekend and were given the
same two week suspension. How times have changed!

Past 50 years: I’ve spent more than half of the past 50
years working for Westinghouse. We’ve moved some 15plus times (usually three–five years each move), living in
Pittsburgh; NYC; Tokyo; Baltimore; Boston; Long Meadow,
Mass.; Windsor, Conn.; Edison, N.J.; Singapore; and Portland, Maine.
After climbing the ladder in Westinghouse in various
project engineering, marketing, and sales and management positions, I left as a general manager to become a
vice president at ABB (Asea Brown Boveri). The move was
just before Westinghouse dissolved as an American industrial giant. I subsequently finished my corporate American
career in executive positions at Graver Water and Martin
­Engineering.
My wife and I bought and ran an inn here in Portland for
the last 12 years. We just sold the inn in September. Besides my wife, son, and daughter, we have two grandsons in
Andover, Mass., and two granddaughters in Carlsbad, Calif.
I was proudly inducted into the URI Athletic Hall of Fame
in 2002. Since that induction and while living in Portland,
URI has been a place that I gladly re-visit at least two or
three times a year. We have great Phi Mu golf outings and
I do enjoy going to the Ryan Center for a variety of events.
My last visit was just this past November for the ROTC
Hall of Fame induction, where one of our Phi Mu brothers
(Charles Yagoobian) who died in Vietnam was honored. I
look forward to remembering those old days.

Past 50 years: I moved away from Rhode Island after
graduation and spent six years in the NYC/ New Jersey
area, teaching high-school German. I got married, had two
children, and moved to Amsterdam for three years for my
husband’s job with IBM.
In 1973 I returned to the U.S., settled in the Chicago area
(where few people know for sure where Rhode Island is). I
got divorced, stayed in Chicago, went back to teaching, left
teaching, and got a master’s degree in organizational development from University of Chicago.
I was remarried in 1980. Since 1979 I have been working
in the training and development field in several organizations. I am still employed full-time and love my job. I don’t
really want to think about retirement yet. My husband is
retired. We are fortunate in that most of our children and
grandchildren are in the Chicago area and we see them
frequently.
Our free time is spent taking advantage of all the many
cultural opportunities in Chicago (theater, opera, ballet,
music) and enjoying the plethora of great restaurants. I try to
get back to Rhode Island at least once a year for my Sigma
Kappa pledge class reunion. I am so pleased that I still
have these close relationships that started in 1960! Looking
­forward to seeing many more classmates at the 50th.

in the Army, I returned home to Boston and began a long
career in the supermarket business, culminating in a stint as

Past 50 years: After graduating with a B.S. in industrial engineering, I accepted an engineering position with Sylvania
Electric, Batavia, N.Y. (between Rochester and Buffalo).
While at Sylvania, I was accepted as a graduate assistant,
so I returned to URI to get an M.S. in business (1968). Upon
graduation, I accepted a software development engineer
position with Western Electric in Newark, N.J., and married
my college sweetheart (now my ex-wife, Margaret Walton,
class of 1967). She was an English teacher in Cedar Grove,
N.J., but at age 45 she changed her career to become a
Methodist minister.
Interestingly, our four children followed their mother into
the ministry in various denominations, and they have provided us with eight grandchildren.
From the time of my undergraduate graduation, I was an
engineer for about five years. Then I got into college teaching (computers). I was pirated out of industry to develop
the computer department at Bryant College (now Bryant
University), so we moved back to R.I., and I started doctoral
studies at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. After serving
as the department chair for the management/ psychology
and computer departments for several years, I left academia
to teach computers at the Foxboro Co., Foxboro, Mass. But
I missed the college “kids,” so I accepted a faculty position
at Rhode Island College and taught computers in the mathematics/computer science department for several years.
In July 1984, I incorporated my own consulting company
(Long Associates Ltd.) and founded a subordinate computer
school and operated it for 20 years, retiring in August 2003.
Throughout my professional career, I also held adjunct
faculty positions teaching courses in management and/
or computers at every college in R.I. (except Brown) and
colleges in nearby Conn. and Mass. Now in retirement, my
hobby is traveling/visiting: children and grandchildren all
over the U.S.; the presidential libraries and museums; and
national parks.

Past 50 years: After I left school, I remained in Rhode
Island, got married, and proceeded to have 5 children, who
have since blessed me with 16 grandchildren.
I worked for my family in the heavy construction industry
until 1996, when I created my own consulting business, Marshall Consultants, which facilitates the creation of upscale
C-level relationships for major architectural and engineering
firms throughout the country.
In 2005 I packed up the wagon and moved west to
Southern California, where I remarried, and I have lived
there ever since.
We have traveled extensively throughout the United
States, Europe, Latin America, and Mexico... some for business, mostly for fun.
I also created another business modeled after the first
called Marshall Face2Face, which is sold to aspiring entrepreneurs as a franchise. We now have offices in Oregon,
Ohio, Wisconsin, and Missouri. I continue to work and don’t
think I will ever retire. I enjoy the challenge. Most of my kids
still live on the East Coast, so we travel back to Providence
and Boston quite often to enjoy the holidays with them. Like
most people I have had my share of ups and downs, but
my health is fantastic (knock on wood), I’m happy, and I see
each day as a blessing to be alive in this beautiful country
of ours.

Past 50 years: After graduating from URI, I joined the
Peace Corps and spent two years as a community development worker in Cartagena and Bogota, Colombia. I then
returned to URI and received a master’s degree in English
in 1972.
For the next 13 years, I taught English and journalism
at John Tyler Community College in Virginia, before joining
the Department of Defense in the intelligence community.
As an intelligence analyst, I worked in Washington, D.C.,
and Hawaii for several years before I retired from government service. In 2006, I moved to Pinehurst, N.C., with my
husband, Ed Bauer. I am now very happy oil painting and
traveling all over the world.

Gerry’s Fondest URI Memory: I was a sophomore transfer
to URI. First floor Adams Hall was loaded with vivid, interesting characters. Don Moorehead and I used to thumb rides
to New London midweek to experience cultural diversity at
Connecticut College, then to save hotel fare we begged the
conductor to let us ride the 3:30 a.m. train back to Kingston
that was supposed to drop newspapers not passengers.
One of the guys had an old Model A Ford with holes in
the floorboards for winter AC. At night we would go down the
line wearing dress shirts, ties, and tweed jackets, and none
of the bartenders carded us.
I was a political science major. The professors gave me a
realistic grounding in how government works. They prepared
me to navigate through Washington, D.C., for more than
three decades, keeping my enthusiasm and resisting cynicism. URI had some wonderful politically aware students,
whose conversation in the Student Union over coffee was
stimulating, and whose activism on civil rights and peace
I’ve come to appreciate over the years.

Gerry’s Past 50 years: After URI I went to the University
of Virginia Law School. In June 1967, I married Regina and
joined the Department of Justice. We lived in Alexandria,
Boston, Providence, St. Louis, and Newton, Mass., where I
prosecuted organized crime cases in the federal courts.
In 1979 Regina and I moved to Reston, Virginia, with our
three children, Nicholas, Meghan, and Susanna. I worked on
the ABSCAM case, where a U.S. senator and six congressmen were convicted of taking bribes from an undercover FBI
agent posing as a Middle Eastern sheik who wanted to buy
U.S. citizenship. In 1980 I was named chief of the Justice
Department’s public integrity section, which prosecuted
public corruption cases. Later I was appointed chief of the
department’s fraud section and finally chief of the asset forfeiture and money laundering section. I retired in 2001.
In 2002 we moved to Chatham on Cape Cod. I teach Tai
Chi and enjoy a weekly writing group and summers with my
grandson, Alex.
Regina’s Fondest URI Memory: All my memories of URI
are fond. The beautiful campus, the warm and interesting
coffee hours at the Student Union, the wonderful sorority
sisters in Sigma Kappa, the charming house on Lower
College Road, the commencement and the reunions. My
most exciting happening was when Aaron Copland was
teaching on campus.
Regina’s Past 50 years: I am enjoying an active and fun
retirement in Chatham, Mass. I am busy teaching seniors
to use the iPad through the local COA computer center. I
volunteer on Chatham’s First Night committee, and am an
officer on the board of the Friends of the Eldredge Public
Library.
Two of my children live on the west coast and my third is
in the south. Gerry and I have a 10-year-old grandson and
are expecting our second grandchild. I had a fullfilling career
as an editor and publications director and a website producer. We have traveled to Europe and South America on
vacations, and some day will plan our first cruise.

Fondest URI Memory: My first day at URI: I was walking back to campus from 30 Acres Pond wearing my blue
beanie. A man in work clothes driving an old pickup truck
offered me a ride. I asked him if he worked on the campus
and he answered “yes.” I asked him if he was in landscaping
or maintenance and he said, “No.” The next day at freshman convocation the man in the old truck and work clothes
turned out to be President Fran Horn.
Past 50 years: After graduating I enlisted in the Navy and
served four years aboard the aircraft carrier USS JFK,
followed by 18 years in the Air National Guard. I earned a
B.A. in philosophy and an M.A. in counseling from URI after
my stint in the Navy. I was a rehabilitation counselor for
the office of rehab services most of my career, retiring as a
supervisor in 2001. In 1991 I was called back to active duty
for Desert Storm.

Fondest URI Memory: The years I spent working and living at the URI dairy, and the mornings milking with Donald

Past 50 years: Upon graduation I went to Maine to accept
a teaching job. We purchased a farm and over the next 15
years raised certified seed potatoes and milked Ayrshire
cattle. During this time I received an M.S. in agronomy from
the University of Maine.
In 1979 I sold the farm and moved to Virginia. I served
as the dairy/forage extension agent in Rockingham County
and unit director of the Wythe County extension program
before becoming an instructor in the Agronomy Department
at Virginia Tech, while earning a Ph.D. in agronomy in 1988.
I taught basic crop production courses as well as agricultural
history, coordinated the academic program, and mentored
the Agronomy Club until 2008, when I became department
head of Crop and Soil Environmental Science. I held that
position until I retired in 2011. During my tenure I did a significant amount of international work in Mali, Brazil, China,
Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, and am still involved in a
higher education USAID project in South Sudan.
I am a fellow in the American Society of Agronomy and
the NACTA (North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture), and have 50 published referred papers in research
and teaching. I have been fortunate to receive numerous
national and university teaching and advising awards. Upon
retirement I was asked to develop curriculum and teach in
our two-year ag-tech program and am still involved in that
endeavor. I am married to Debra Morris and have three children, David, Cathy, and Jennifer, and we have five grandchildren. We currently live on a small farm near campus
where Tom’s Creek enters the New River. Much of my success is directly attributed to the wonderful training I received
during my years in Kingston.

my wife’s real estate office for 16 years before retiring.
Have greatly enjoyed retirement because I’ve been able
to do research and add to my large sports memorabilia
collection, which has always been my secret passion. My

nearby in Maynard, and daughter, Debbie (children: Alex,
11, and Cameron, 9), lives in London, so we get to travel

Fisherman magazine. The last two years of my career were
with On the Water magazine. We do some traveling and
visiting with our grandchildren. Still are cruising and sailing
New England waters each summer, racing our 22-foot
Pearson Ensign, on which our grandchildren crew. They all
race Optimists and are moving into 420s. The grandchildren
often determine our cruising ports of call—the favorites are
Block Island, Hadley’s Harbor, Shelter Island, Cuttyhunk,
and so on.

reacted—some screamed and some wept—we were very
sad because we all trusted him, loved him, and were proud
of his leadership. The history of the U.S. would have been
different if he had lived through two terms of presidency.

Am also an officer in Cleveland-Bratislava Sister Cities,
an organization that supports Slovak ethnic and cultural
activities. Over the past two years have worked with the U.S.
Ambassador to Slovakia to develop exchange programs
between the United States and Slovak Republic.

Fondest URI Memory: An Entrepreneurial Escapade! My
best friend and I decided to make some extra money by
gathering ROTC shoes from dorm students, intending to spit
shine them for drill duty the following day. We had so many
shoes in our rooms that it was inevitable that they would all
get mixed up. Needless to say, we had a lot of angry fellow
students at drill that day—and wisely avoided showing up
ourselves!
Past 50 years: I can honestly say that the past 50 years
have been very good to me, both experientially and healthwise. My only main regret is that I never married and raised
a family of my own.
I worked for four years in Providence as an account
executive for an ad agency, which provided me with a good
foundation for a fascinating career in marketing communications. I moved to Boston and opened my own ad agency
and later formed my own graphic design firm; both were
located on Newbury Street, the place to be in Boston during
that time.
Those 25 years in Boston modeled my personality,
charted my life path, and were personally rewarding and fulfilling. That period saw many professional accomplishments
providing branding services to such prestige clients as MIT,
Boston public schools, Ocean Spray cranberries, and New
Balance athletic shoes.
I am now living in Providence and still working part-time
as a branding consultant. One of the most exciting projects
that I completed was the rebranding of the Columbia Pictures studio in Hollywood, Calif. I have attended a number
of industry events in Hollywood. The most memorable were
the Oscars and the Emmy awards shows, followed by the
after-parties, where I met many actors and celebrities.
Through the years, I have been quite active in
volunteering my marketing services to various Armenian
organizations in the communities where I lived, such as
the Armenian Library and Museum of America, located in
Watertown, Mass. I am presently the vice chairman of the
Armenian Historical Association of R.I.
My biggest personal accomplishment as a “founding
member” of the R.I. Ararat Association, is that along with six
other members we have collectively raised, to date, more
than $325,000 in donations to more than 13 Rhode Islandbased Armenian charitable organizations in need of operating funds.

Past 50 years: After graduation I traveled to Germany with
the Department of the Army Special Services, returning
home to Rhode Island in 1969, and then moving to New
York for my first job as a social worker with the Westchester
County Department of Social Services. That led me to an
appointment in the Department of Family Studies at Cornell
University in Ithaca, although I was based in New York City.
In 1980 I moved to New Haven, Conn., and joined the
faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Social
Work. I had a most interesting career as a university faculty
member in social work, retiring in 2006 after 26 years, as
professor emerita. I am enjoying retirement, traveling with
my husband of 33 years, Larry Dowler, boating on Long
Island Sound, and socializing with our friends here on
Connecticut’s shoreline. Each summer my Delta Zeta sister
and dear friend Celi Bagnali Putnam and I host a Delta Zeta
reunion luncheon at my home.

Northeastern University in Boston and received an M.S. in
industrial engineering in 1966, soon followed by the birth of

In 1968 I began a career as a healthcare executive and
management consultant— a career that spanned 35 years
in New Haven, Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver, and Phoenix,
where I lived for 29 years. My positions included being the
CEO of four organizations, including St. Luke’s Hospital
in Phoenix. I was the CEO of the Arizona Association of
Community Health Care Centers for the 13 years before my
retirement. My contributions and accomplishments in this
position were recognized by many of Arizona’s civic leaders,
including Senator John McCain.
Following my retirement I relocated to my current location, San Diego. I have been an active volunteer for several
nonprofit organizations, serving on boards of directors and
in other management-related capacities. I’ve also been
enjoying many hobbies, including tennis, hiking, memoir
writing, and theater, as well as helping to coach my twin
grandsons’ basketball and baseball teams.
My daughter, Heather, lives nearby in San Diego, and
she and her sons were the reason for my relocation following retirement. She has an M.B.A. in marketing and served
as a pharmaceutical sales representative, but relinquished
that position upon the birth of her twin boys. She has been a
part-time yoga instructor for several years while concentrating on raising her boys.
My son, Adam, is a naturopathic physician in private
practice in the Seattle, Washington, suburb of Kirkland. He
has one son. He received his N.D. from Bastyr University.
I have been fortunate enough to travel almost every state
in the U.S. and many venues in Europe, Asia, Australia/ New
Zealand, and Africa. I am a cruise aficionado, having taken
more than half a dozen cruises. There remain many places
where I would like to travel, such as South America and
China. My sense of adventure remains strong!

Past 50 years: After graduation I worked in New York City
at Time, Inc. But I retired to stay home with my two children.
After my second child was born, I went to Belguim in 1969
with my first husband, Dick Jordan ’64, and then to England
in 1971. Dick was with a consumer product company. Great
experience, but kids were babies, so it was hard.
Back in the U.S., we settled in New Jersey for seven
years, then Connecticut for five. Unfortunately, we divorced
in 1985, and I settled on Cape Cod. I went back to graduate
school and, thanks to undergraduate work, my transcript
was accepted in full and I earned an M.Ed. in counseling.
I went on to be a guidance counselor at Barnstable High
School.
I met my second husband, Jack, and married in 1999.
I left my job and have done extensive traveling, mostly in
Europe. Jack owned a small manufacturing company with
business all over the world, so we spent time in Africa and
Spain. I have two children. Scott, in Los Altos, Calif., works
for a small biomedical firm. He is engaged to Erin, who has
two children,13 and 11. My daughter, Debbie, lives in Centerville, Mass., and has three children, 13, 11, and 6, and
works as an elementary school counselor.
My husband, Jack, has three children: Susan, in Hopkin,
Mass., with three children, 13 and 11-year-old twins; Nancy,
in Duxbury, with three children, 13, 10, 7; and a son, John,
who lives in Eden, Vermont, and has a farm.

Past 50 years: Barbara and I met at URI. We were married
after my graduation and stayed in Kingston another
year so Barbara could finish her degree. Then moved to
Philadelphia, where I earned an M.B.A. at the Wharton
School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Next, off to corporate life with W.R. Grace & Company for
nine years. We first lived in Western Massachusetts where
I managed a manufacturing plant, then to the Boston area
while I managed one of Grace’s product lines.
After Grace, we moved to Maine to join a family business,
where I spent most of my career. We co-owned a gas, welding products, and power tool business, Advantage Gases &
Tools, with 11 locations in Maine and New Hampshire.
Our daughter, Lisa, and her husband, Michael, live in
Providence. Our son, Brian, and his wife, Paula, live in
Falmouth, Maine, with their twins, Matthew and William.
Now retired, we spend seven to eight months a year in
Sarasota, Florida, with the balance in Falmouth, Maine.
A great combination at this point in life! We both play golf
and can now play year round. We also enjoy travel and
the theater.
In recent years we have reconnected with URI. We have
taken part in several events in Rhode Island, and some near
our home in southwest Florida. It’s great to be back in touch
with the URI family!

Fondest URI Memory: In my freshman year there was
a “panty raid” at the girls’ dormitories. Much hooting and
hollering until Dean Duxe came over with a bullhorn and told
us about proper behavior.
Past 50 years: After graduating in industrial engineering,
I went to NYU and received a master’s in industrial

engineering. That led to a 28-year career in IBM industrial
engineering, programming, marketing division positions
in systems engineering, marketing support, systems
engineering manager, executive staff. I then took an
opportunity to leave with a golden handshake and earned a
master’s degree in nutrition, which started a second career
in 1995 in health and healing that continues to this day.
My wife, Barbara (Schleifer ’65), and I have been married
since ’66 and have a son, daughter, and three grandchildren. The youngest and her parents are about to move to
Providence from Chicago and will be living about one mile
from where Barbara grew up on the east side. Barbara is a
retired teacher and is now a full-time artist and golfer.
It doesn’t seem possible that 50 years have passed.
We have been to many of the reunions and have seen the
amazing positive changes at URI. I feel grateful to have had
the positive experiences at URI, including being a founder of
Phi Sigma Delta, now ZBT. I used to think 70 was old. Now
I choose to believe that 70 is the new 55. We have been
blessed with good health and a wonderful family. I wish all
fellow alumni peace, joy, and love in their life. May you turn
adversity into opportunity for spiritual growth and learning.

Fondest URI Memory: Not sure the statute of limitations
has run out yet on funny memories. Fond ones are many
(football pep rallies, fraternity sings, etc.). Two surreal ones:
Cuban missile crisis and campus reaction; JFK assassination and campus reaction.
Past 50 years: Currently I am majority owner of Your
Smithfield Magazine. I worked 19 years as managing editor
for three newspaper chains in northern R.I. Prior to that I
was director of news and information for 16 years at Rhode
Island College. I stayed at URI after graduation and earned
an M.A., then did further graduate study at UMass. I have
one daughter who attended Wellesley for her B.A. and
UMass Amherst for her M.F.A. She is the literary manager at
Asolo Rep. Theater in Sarasota, Fla. I am a well-published
poet and playwright in addition to being a journalist.

Past 50 years: After URI and an M.S.C.E. from Purdue
University, I spent 40 years in the transportation engineering
field, primarily with consulting engineering firms Wilbur
Smith Associates and Vanasse Hangen Associates. I
was awarded the Freeman Award from the Providence
Engineering Society in 2006. I taught transportation and
traffic engineering as an adjunct professor at URI for
17 years.
Muriel and I have been married 48 years and are blessed
with three children and seven grandchildren. We spend our
retirement on Cape Cod and on Dataw Island in South Carolina. Hobbies include boating, antique cars, woodworking,
and gardening. Each year we normally take one overseas
trip or cruise.

Past 50 years: Happily married to the same woman for
nearly 47 years!!! Three grown daughters, all successful in
their own careers. A 40-plus year career as a CPA, during

Fondest URI Memory: Some unforgettable memories from
those days on campus are good and some not. Here are a
few: Revolting against wearing freshman beanies, snowy
winter treks to Lippitt dining hall, study nights in Green Hall
library, cramming for finals, Homecoming chicken-wire and
tissue floats, getting your date back before her curfew,
Greek week chariot races, pep rally bonfires, Iggy’s grinders,
25-cent beers and steak sandwiches at Giro’s, Quonset huts
near the Quad, the North Hall fire, and walking into Bliss to
learn President Kennedy was assassinated.
Past 50 years: After graduation I completed an M.S. in civil
engineering in ’66. Then on to fulfill my active duty obligation
in the Corps of Engineers serving in Vietnam. I have been
married to Joan Hardie for 47 years. Worked for Keyes
Associates and Fram Corporation, formed ERA Engineering,
and eventually joined GZA Geo Environmental as a principal
and vice president, retiring in 2008.
Presently, I am fortunate to be part of the URI part-time
faculty in civil engineering. Our two daughters live in R.I.
and New Hampshire, and my mom just turned 99 this year.
We enjoy sailing the Bay and New England coast in the
summer aboard our sailboat, Azzurra. Our winters are spent
snow-birding in Florida. We continue to travel to see as
much as possible. I look back fondly on my time on campus
and appreciate the good things that have come from my
experience at URI.
