There were many things that took place that week, including conversations in the classrooms about why it’s important to be kind and how each one of us has the power to make a difference in this world by being kind. 2nd – 5th grade students were each given a “Kindness coin” which they could hand out to someone after they performed a random act of kindness for them. Another big part of Kindness Week was an art contest called “Expressing Kindness through Art.” Students in kindergarten through 5th grade had the opportunity to create a work of art, any kind of art, that expressed what kindness meant to them. The quality of the artwork that was submitted was fantastic! Every student who participated in the art contest had their work displayed at Harrison School and received a coupon for a free ice cream from Culver’s. In addition, the top three artists were recognized with a $50.00 Visa gift card, which were generously donated to Harrison. The top three artists also received $25.00 and were able to donate this money to the charity of their choice as a way to “pay it forward.” The winning artists had their artwork on display at Hedberg Public Library and at the Educational Services Center. The three top winners of the art contest were Ellie Breit (1st grade), Litty Dummer (4th grade), and Gabe Coleman (5th grade). Thanks to all of the students who participated in the art contest. It was wonderful to see you express kindness through your artwork! In addition, Harrison School would like to thank Andre Michaels (who donated the Kindness coins), Culver’s, Brian McCormick and Rene Bue from Hedberg Public Library, the anonymous donors who donated the cash prizes, and the Janesville Gazette. Also, a very special thanks goes out to Harrison parent, Lara Pensy, for all of her hard work coordinating Kindness Week. This event would not have happened without her leadership and dedication to this project!
