Danny Nova
D Danny Nova AT C A R N E G I E HALL B y Rachel Sokol Musician Danny Nova recently performed live at the world famous Carnegie Hall on November 15th. A theatre known for showcasing extraordinary talent since its inception, the world-famous Nova was a natural on stage, lit up by his own vocal talent and the enthusiasm of the crowd. Wearing black jeans and a black blazer over a white shirt, Nova--whose voice sounds like a wam mix of Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen--danced across the stage while singing in front of his equally talented band. Nova uses casual, conversational mannerisms when he sings, showcasing his true passion for every single note he sings. His show was not flashy or over-the-top--it’s gentle, serene and familiar--something about his vocal talent puts even a newcomber at ease, allowing the audience to really embrace every note of the music, and not be distracted by any fancy scenery, lights, or Broadway-esque special effects. . Appearing on stage with Nova were violinist Deni Bonet, keyboardist Andy Burton, Percussionist Kevin McIntosh, Bassist Muddy Shews, Pianist and Organist Scott Treibitz, Percussionist Sheik, Guitarist Peter Wood, Flutist Yukari and Drummer Liberty DeVitto. Nova’s band was just as impressive, for no live musician is fully complete without his or her band. Nova himself plays the guitar, harmonica and flute but members of his band have previously performed with Robert Plant, Billy Joel, Dramarama, REM, Cyndi Lauper and more. So, while some people may ask, “Who is Danny Nova?” his impressive list of band members certainly won’t. Nova opened the show with his song “Vicious Circles,” performing in both Acts I and II his own songs as well as mainstream songs such as, “Come as You Are.” In his show, Nova brought on stage two special guest singers, Nirvana Savoury and Gabrielle Ross, a rising star with whom he sang, “Open Arms.” Ross also performed a solo song from her not-yet-released album, and had a sweet, gentle voice. Nova has a four-plus octave vocal range and can hit full-voice E nptes above high C. As for his lyrics, other songwriters view his lyrical content as polished and seasoned. At the show, Nova graced the audience with his not-yet-released song, “In the Future,” about nursing a broken heart, and at once point he brought his adorable young daughter on stage and sang to her. Nova is a world-class vocalist and songwriter who is admired for his musical compositions. His solo debut CD, titled “Crushing the Stone” was released in September 2008. He is an act that is not to be missed and his obvious enthusiasm and bliss for performing live is contagious--the audience finds themselves singing and humming along with Nova when he’s on stage--and that’s what makes a true musician.
