Our clients grow on a daily basis through individualized case management, our mental health and addiction counseling, and specialized attention given by our employment specialist. We also experienced literal growth in 2011 through our Cream City Gardens project, transforming the empty space across from the Guest House into dozens of garden beds filled with green produce! It was great to see the community come together to support this new venture. Like last year, our permanent housing program experienced growth, expanding the total number of individuals receiving case management to 269. It’s exciting to know that our skillful, dedicated staff are touching even more lives each day, and helping formerly homeless men, women and families maintain stable housing. One area that we weren’t certain we’d experience growth in was our budget, but thankfully the community saw the value of our work and invested in our programs and services. In particular, we would like to acknowledge the Northwestern Mutual Foundation for its $25,000 grant toward our LEADS transitional housing program. Also, the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation generously supported our work in 2011, which we thank it for. As you’ll see throughout this booklet, we have many foundations, faithbased partners, businesses and individuals who gave what they could in 2011; it is greatly appreciated. Two things we’re constantly thankful for when we reflect on the previous year are the amazing staff we have the privilege of working with, and the dedicated community of volunteers helping us achieve our mission. One volunteer helped the Guest House to substantially grow its volunteer meal program, reaching out to local restaurants and asking them to provide a meal for our guests on a regular basis. We now have a warm meal almost every night of the week for our 86 guests! Of course, this wouldn’t be the case without the many faith-based partners, families and individuals who also provide meals regularly. Thank you! Foundations and Trusts Alice B. The listing for donors represents contributors of at least $100 to the Guest House during the past year. Additionally, our many generous individuals, community partners, faith partners and corporate supporters who provided invaluable in-kind gifts, while not listed, are also appreciated. Please let us know where we may have erred or what documentation might be desirable in future reports of this nature. 2011 Benchmarks of Growth Employment: In 2011 we collaborated with numerous employers in the community, such as HD Express, which hired two guests. We also had 15 guests work at Winter Fest through Professional Events & Consultants (PEC). Additionally, PSI hired one individual to work at Hunger Task Force as part of its Transitional Housing program. Our Employment Specialist is continually making connections in the community that benefit our guests, as well as raising awareness regarding our programs and services. Permanent Housing: With the addition of the brand-new Capuchin apartments, the Guest House now provides case management services to 269 individuals! As a leader in the Milwaukee community in the area of permanent housing, we are proud of our continued growth. Cream City Gardens: In partnership with Friedens Community Ministries, the Guest House formed Cream City Gardens to provide fresh produce for guests and food pantry members. A curriculum program allows guests to learn job skills that will apply to the green industry, and we’re excited about the possibilities for further garden growth in 2012! Counseling Clinic: Capitalizing on our expanded certification as a mental health clinic in 2010, this year saw growth in the services our counseling clinic offers. Our clinic was one of seven agencies in Milwaukee County chosen for the Mental Health Outpatient pilot program, which is a primary referral source for mental health clients at the Guest House who can benefit from talk therapy. Our clinic can also accept Title 19 Medicaid insurance now! The Guest House of Milwaukee provides shelter, housing, education, and services to Milwaukee’s homeless who seek to transform their lives with dignity and purpose. I moved into Homelinc III yesterday after being in the Guest House a little over a year. The LEADS program gets you to success and prepares you to live on your own. I learned responsibilities and how to keep my area clean. The people that work at the Guest House are caring; they checked up on you...they gave stay-in days when the weather was bad or people needed it. It changed a lot, for the better. I got to work on my alcohol issues and stopped drinking so I could get a place of my own. The Guest House treats you well and looks out for you. -Kim North Shore Congregational Church Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Ozaukee Congregational Church Plymouth Church of Milwaukee Racine Dominican Mission Fund Redemption Lutheran Church Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Saron United Church of Christ Sisters of the Divine Savior Southeast Wisconsin Association UCC SS. She had been staying at a local shelter for seven months, which she went to after having been incarcerated for a year. Marie’s incarceration had cost her a highpaying job in accounting/bookkeeping; her family (all of her adult children refused to speak to her and her minor daughter was sent to live with a cousin); her home; everything she held dear was gone. On top of all of this she was dealing with some rather serious medical conditions. I immediately liked her for her lofty goals: gain income, regain custody of her minor daughter, become healthy, help out at her church—all while remaining compliant with her probation. Here we are less than two years after she moved in. Marie was near death several times—often spending more time in her hospital bed than her own. She quickly realized that her doctors didn’t fully understand her illness, so she found a new specialist who did. She learned to advocate for herself and went from taking drugs that were not helping to ones that have kept her healthy for several months now. She gained her much-needed disability benefits, she began paying child support and she reconciled with her adult children. All of her hard work and determination culminated in her regaining custody of her now fifteen-year-old daughter just weeks before Thanksgiving, and seeing her grandson for the first time in five years at Christmas. Marie realized very quickly that a case manager can help you find the resources and push you to succeed, but unless you’re willing to take that leap that only you can take, you’ll never change and things will always remain the same.
