A History of the Governor's
Mansion Foundation
The Washington State Governor's
Mansion is located on the crest of Capitol
Point, with a panoramic view of the city of
Olympia, the Capitol grounds, the southern
most waters of Puget Sound and the
Olympic Mountains.
The red brick
Georgian-style building with white pillars is
surrounded by sloping lawns, evergreen
trees and flowering shrubs.
Visitors to the gracious residence
view handsomely coordinated public rooms
furnished principally with antiques from the
English Regency and American Federal
periods. The mansion is truly a legacy for
all Washingtonians. However, it was not
always this way.
Design ed
in
1908
by
the
architectural firm of Russell and Babcock of
Tacoma, the nineteen room residence was
built under that firm's supervision at a cost
of $35,000. The cornerstone ceremony was
attended by Governor Albert E. Mead,
numerous dignitaries, state officials, and
several hundred spectators.

well as a visit to downtown Olympia, and
their fabulous Farmers’ Market.

Wow, we have so many people in Sequim
(and surrounding areas) who like to stay active,
are adventurous and continue to look for
learning experiences. Usually our museum trips
are VERY popular…the Naval and the Undersea
Museums are perfect examples; the bus was
almost full!!
We have planned a few trips this summer
to the Olympic Music Festival. It’s fairly close by
and you’ll hear some great music. And, speaking
of music, on September 11 we’re going to the
Washington State Fair, and our Ukulele group
with be there playing on stage that day! Hop on
the bus, enjoy the fair and cheer for the Ukulele
players!
Hopefully our shopping trip to Bellevue
Square Mall is still a go. Not too many have
signed up yet. It is on Thursday, August 27
(pertinent information which I left out last
month!!!). In September we will be shopping at
Silverdale Mall. They have so many stores and
it’s a short trip, which makes it nice.
The Water Limo has been very popular
this summer, with Captain Charles Martin as your
guide. A trip to Friday Harbor is planned for Sept
3…the first trip to San Juan Island this year. If we
end up with a waiting list, we can always
schedule an additional trip. Don’t miss the
Protection Island trip or Admiralty Lighthouse
Tour; so fun and informative!
We might be able to squeeze you in on
the Harrison Hot Springs trip, but you’d need to
call right away. Just a few spots are open. You
would need a passport, passport card or an
enhanced license or ID for this trip.
If you missed the presentation from
Collette Travel regarding the trip next April to
Washington D.C., please give me a call and I can
get the information to you. You do save a little $$
if you sign up early.
Emerald Downs. August 16. The Mile. What
more can I say? You’ll need to call to reserve a
spot NOW! This trip needs a few more people to
sign up or it will not go. That goes for the
Mariners Game on Wednesday, August 26 too.
Last chance to cheer and have hot dogs and beer
at the stadium this year…Call the Trips office!
And one more thing: A BIG thank you to
our awesome volunteer bus drivers!! They are so
generous with their time, and so dedicated!

Board Notes from the July Board Meeting




Beth Barrett reported that the trips department is doing quite well,
with more trips and more travelers in June than during the same
period a year ago. The Washington DC trip already has a number of
people signed up, with room for more.
Membership in the Shipley Center hit an all-time high of 1791. The
average age of members is now 72.2, which is a bit lower than the
average a year ago.
A nice thank you card was read that recognized our knitting group
from Jerry Mac.
Voted that a feasibility study firm be selected by the end
of the year, to begin work in early 2016 regarding the
new Center project.

As a non-profit organization with a mission to fulfill, your Center needs regular financial support
to continue to operate in the black. We have about 90 faithful donors who believe in what we are
doing and are doing their best to keep things afloat from year to year; BUT, frankly, we really need a
lot more of you to join their ranks! Please donate what you can as soon as you can to Shipley Center,
PO Box 1827, Sequim, WA 98382.
Blunt? Yes, a bit; but some of us like it when people “cut to the chase.”
Reviewing the finances at the half-way mark of 2015, things are not looking as good as they
should be. We are about $28,400 short of meeting our budget. The good news is that dues and
activity income are doing fine, our luncheons are breaking even, and I sincerely thank those who
participate. In addition, we are receiving good sponsorship amounts from local businesses, who are
also buying ads to support our newsletter. Our benefit sale fundraiser this month is on track to fulfill its
part of the budget as well. Our grant from the City of Sequim for our HAFA program has come in.
So . . . What is lacking? Where are we deficient?
The answer is that we are no longer attracting donations from our members as in the past. Of
our Center’s 1791 members, just 90 or so regular, faithful donors are “carrying the load” for the other
1701.
We are a non-profit organization, and that means we don’t return money to any “shareholders”
or “owners.” We operate on a skeleton crew of paid staff, with activities led by volunteers.
Evidence points to the fact that this community expects its seniors to support their own
interests. For the most part, young people don’t donate to senior organizations.
I have tried subtle and not-so-subtle ways to encourage more support:
In my February article, I gave a history of the Center, telling how Sequim pioneers sacrificed
time and money (hint, hint) to make our Center what it is today. In March, I answered the question,
Are We There Yet? regarding our new Center’s progress, mentioning the generosity of Mr. Shipley and
others (more hints). In April, I mentioned that this year was challenging, since we had to spend about
$7000 on deferred maintenance to bring our 921 E. Hammond St. building up to par with repairs and
painting. (To date, that number has tripled to over $23,000.) As far as I know, just one person
responded directly to that plea for assistance with those expenses. I also mentioned again an easy way
to become a donor is through the Members Giving Monthly (MGM) Club at a minimum of $10 per
month; and, to date, no new donors have joined the MGM Club.
In May, we celebrated 44 Far-out Years of Friendship and Fun. In June, I celebrated YOU and
how your participation in activities, trips and socials, your faithful membership renewals, your moral
and financial support in the community, are all vital and help to keep us going, but have not yet seen
that translate into more than one or two new donors stepping forward.
Last month, we helped protect people from predators of the nonprofit world, listing “charities”
that put only 2 cents of your donated dollar to work, if that. Per our current WA State Charities report,
using 2013 IRS 990 data, 72 cents of every dollar goes directly to program services at Shipley Center,
with the remainder going to other expenses that support our nonprofit mission.
We really appreciate the 90 or so regular financial donors to our Center. Will you consider
joining themin keeping us on a strong financial footing?

Travelin’ Through Europe . . . or, The Further Adventures of Carol and Ivan

Since last month’s travel article, Carol and Ivan Hoyt spent a month traveling through Austria and
Switzerland by train. Then it was to Hamburg, Germany, where they joined 5 other RV couples plus Dieter and
Gaby (wagonmasters) and Thomas (tailgunner). As always, they found the caravaners to be friendly and
outgoing, but “these folks seemed more traveled than other groups we’ve joined. We almost felt like novices as
we listened to them share their world-wide adventures!”
“We will be driving in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway with couples from Florida,
New Hampshire, Texas, Melbourne, Australia . . . and, would you believe, Sequim, WA? Paula and Rick Huls
bought a house on Fir St. just a few blocks from our apartment, and plan to retire to Sequim. They have stayed at
our RV park several times in the last 6 years but we never have
seen them there. Small world!”
RIBE: Fast-forward to June . . . Their first country was
Denmark, where they were “struck by the similarity to Iowa
farmland, mainly flat and very green. In Ribe, they visited the
Viking Center, a reconstructed Viking settlement with
costumed characters, a market, a farm, and hands-on
activities. As an aside, Carol states: “By the way, Vikings
never wore horns on their helmets; only in Hollywood
Ribe Town, 825 A.D.
movies!”
ROSKILDE, is the home of the Viking Ship Museum, the Danish national museum for ships, seafaring, and
Tourist Viking boat on Roskilde Fjord boatbuilding in the prehistoric and medieval periods. They observed five
boats in various forms of restoration, which had been raised from the
harbor where they had been since Viking times (750-1000). “We were
amazed to learn the Vikings had sailed to Greenland, Newfoundland, the
Mediterranean Sea, and all the way to the Black Sea!”
In the Museum harbor there are many reconstructed Viking ships and
traditional Nordic boats. A unique experience was the chance to get into
a replica of a Viking long boat and man the oars to go out into the
Roskilde Fjord. In the main harbor, the skipper raised the square sail.
Enthuses Carol, “We really flew across the water, like flying! Quite exciting for a land lubber like me, with no
sailing experience!”
COPENHAGEN: The Rosenborg Palace, a Renaissance Castle and gardens, was originally built by one of the
most famous Scandinavian kings, Christian IV, as a country summerhouse in 1606.
Denmark’s Crown Jewels are displayed here. Among the main attractions are the Knights’ Hall’s
coronation thrones and three life-size silver lions standing guard. Tapestries on the walls commemorate battles
between Denmark and Sweden. So grand!

We used Independent Plumbing, owned
by Paul Tucker, who showed up when
he said he would and did a good job. It
is refreshing to find a guy who shows
up and does the job. Just so you know,
the water supply for this is a line that
was for a coffee machine in the NW
corner of the main room. It does not

pressure to run
a car wash or to
operate
a
p r e s s u r e
washer,
but
does just fine
for
watering
plants.

Progress . . . one step at a time!

Over the next several
weeks, we will be working on upgrading our membership management
software, but we need YOUR help NOW! If you have moved, changed
phone numbers (maybe disconnected your landline and only have a
cell phone), changed email, have a new emergency contact (or never gave us one
before), we need you to please email shipleycenter@olypen.com any “new”
information since you joined!
APPLYING FOR GRANTS: Last month I submitted two grants to the Haller
Foundation for a total of $13,000. There is no guarantee that we will receive that
total amount, or any amount, as the Haller Foundation must review all applications it
received, and then make their selections from there. We submitted one for $10,000
to help fund our Healthy Aging for All program, and $3,000 to help us support the
Senior Nutrition program that will now be hosted at Shipley Center. While the
program is managed and provided by OlyCAP, we are partnering with them to
provide affordable rent. The grant money will help with this and promote the
program.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Many of you are asking, “When is the new
building going to be built?” While the answer of, “when we raise the money” may be
short, the process is not. Over the last several months a group of us have met with
professionals within the fundraising and capital campaign world gaining knowledge
and guidance on what we need to do. We have implemented several of these tips
and suggestions, and have made progress towards our end goal.
FUTURE GOALS: Currently we are doing some “behind the scenes” work, such
as meeting with some of our top donors and more active members to find out why
they support and participate at Shipley Center, as well as meeting with community
leaders to find out what they think about Shipley Center and our future goals.
FEASIBILITY STUDY: We are about to move to the next phase of finding a
professional to work with us to do a feasibility study. This will lay the foundation
needed and outline the tasks we still need to complete before we are ready to start
reaching out to foundations and seeking larger grants. As Development Director, I
plan to keep you all updated on the various phases that we are working through, and
to show you we are working towards our goal of a new Shipley Center. Thank you for
