Public Transport
Malta’s public transport system offers a cheap and
efficient way of touring the Island. The main bus
terminus is in Valletta from where buses operate
to all parts of Malta, although there are also direct,
point to point, services. The cost of a bus route
ranges from 47c to €1.16 including direct buses.
The longest bus journey takes about fifty minutes;
the average ride is between 20 and 30 minutes.
Driving
Driving is on the left. There is a speed limit of 70kms per hour on arterial roads and
40kph in urban areas.
Boat Hire
Canoes, rowing boats, sailing boats,
pedalos and speedboats are available for
hire from a number of operators in the more
popular seaside resorts. Larger vessels
and yachts are also available for charter.
Public Holiday
Labour Day
Labour Day is an annual holiday celebrated all over the world, recognising the
economic and social achievements of workers. Popularly known as May Day or
International Workers' Day, the 1st of May is also a public holiday in Malta and
Gozo. Activities commemorating this event take place mostly in Valletta.
The date also coincides with the religious feast of St Joseph the Worker
Malta & Gozo
celebrated in the town of B'Kara.

The exhibition, co-curated by the artist and Sandro Debono, Senior Curator
of the National Museum of Fine Arts, presents a dialogue by the artist, known
for his transmedia, conceptual work, with select works from the National
Collection. The exhibition brings together for the first time three bodies of work
by Vince Briffa based on the theme of the uncertainty of all that is human. It
explores ambivalent spaces located at the centre of ambiguity, and addresses
the disquiet boundaries between a happening and its memory, where neither
the action nor its intention is clear and where memory is left with no nurturing
material referent.

Malta, being in the heart of the Mediterranean, has absorbed both Southern
European as well as North African cuisine, translating these influences
into a variety of typical dishes. The long months of sunshine means that a
variety of fruit and vegetables are grown all year round. The surrounding sea
yields generous catches of fish. The following restaurants specialise in
Mediterranean food, others in more exotic delights that offer exquisite food and
impeccable service, making for a great dining experience.
We have taken the liberty in testing every single restaurant listed on these
pages and made sure that food, atmosphere and service remain tops in the
Maltese Islands. We are recommending these restaurants to all tourists that
appreciate mouthwatering food and good service. These restaurants are tested on a regular basis otherwise they would not be listed under our recommendation. The “Events Malta Team” have also arranged for a free liquor after your

Paceville
St Julian’s and Paceville are Malta’s main nightlife areas. Paceville lies on the hill
between Spinola Bay and St George’s Bay. It is the scene of Malta’s year-round
nightlife and offers leisure, entertainment and dining to suit all tastes. There is
plenty to choose from: Paceville has the latest in club DJ music, as well as piano
bars, an elegant casino and superb restaurants. The casino is in Villa Dragonara,
once the private home of a 19th century Maltese aristocrat.
St. Julian’s
St Julian’s is now an extension of Sliema although it
started life as a small fishing port based on Spinola
and Balluta Bays. Like Sliema, it is now a major
residential and tourist centre, and home to some of
Malta’s newest hotels. St Julian’s merges with
Paceville, Malta’s main nightlife centre where there
are clubs, casinos and numerous restaurants, cafes
and bars.
Picturesque Spinola Bay is still used
by fishermen whose traditional boats are housed
just below the restaurants. The bay is particularly
attractive at night and as a venue for open-air dining.
Casino
Everyone has to have an evening’s flutter once in a while. And there is no better
time than on holiday. Malta has several excellent casinos. Choose from an elegant
colonial-style villa, an ultra modern hotel complex, or a restored 17th century,
harbour-side palace. All provide great entertainment whether you’re new to the
tables or have tried your luck before
Valletta Waterfront
The Valletta Waterfront, in Floriana, is Grand Master Pinto's baroque Wharf built in
the 18th Century. It has been thoroughly renovated into an entertainment area. It is
currently being used as a popular venue with a concentration of upmarket bars and
restaurants after a recent thorough restoration process. International names such
as Hard Rock Cafe operate in the area.

Upper and Lower Barrakka
Gardens
Two gardens, facing the Grand
Harbour in Valletta, both offering a
panoramic view. The Upper Barrakka
Gardens offer the best view since
they’re more centered and at a much
higher level. It was the gift of an
eighteenth-century
knight.
The
Anglican Garrison Church partly
intrudes upon it. The garden is built
on top of a demi-bastion. The Lower
Barrakka Gardens are part of St
Christopher’s Bastion and have a
view of the harbour. At their center is a small Greek-style folly built in memory
of Governor Sir Alexander Ball, who led the siege against the French in 1800 and
subsequently became Britain’s first civil commissioner of Malta. The French during
the 1798-1800 siege cultivated these gardens.
Argotti Botanical Gardens
In 1805 the British governor appointed a Carmelite friar, Malta’s first professor of
natural history. He assembled the plants in Floriana’s Mall and 50 years later they
were moved to the site of the present Argotti Gardens, then the preserve of a
deceased knight.
Buskett Gardens
No more than 2kms from Dingli
Cliffs, sitting under the watchful
eye of Cardinal Grand Master de
Verdalle’s summer retreat, are
Buskett Gardens. Panoplies of
foliage spread their shade over the
valley floor, providing a welcome
respite against the heat of summer.
There are orange and cypress
trees, irregular cacti, leguminous
carobs, aromatic firs and the Judas
tree, which foretells Easter with
its pink blossom (this is said to be
the tree from which Judas hung
himself).
Hastings Gardens
From the National Museum of Fine Arts, it is well worth taking a stroll through the
nearby Hastings Gardens, named after a former Governor General, the Marquess
of Hastings (1824-26).
