Thumb Cooling & Heating was founded in 1979 in Port
Hope, with a main focus in refrigeration. In 2004, Kyle
partnered with his Dad Ron Mausolf in the family
business. Over the years, the company has grown steadily,
and increased their product and service offerings in the
heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration
fields. Recently they have remodeled the building at 837
South State Street and opened the doors for business in
Caro.
With over 30 years of experience, their customer list
includes factories, churches, office buildings, apartment
buildings, educational facilities, agricultural facilities,
restaurants, grocery stores, party stores, bakeries,
municipal facilities, auto centers, and residential homes.
They offer unmatched installation, design, and service to
customers throughout Michigan. They measure their
success by their projects, performance, and customer
service. They invite you to measure them the same way.
Ron and Kyle say, “Your home and business are far more
than just a shelter for you - they are part of who you are.
It’s where your family and friends gather and memories
are made. It’s your comfort zone. That is why quality
design services, materials and craftsmanship are standard
for us. We eliminate the guess work and scheduling
conflicts you may otherwise encounter so the end product
will receive your seal of approval the first time. We value
your family and home’s safety. That’s why we hire only
the best installers and technicians. We do annual background checks, random drug testing, extensive technical
and customer service training, and have only NATE
certified technicians.”

were welcomed to Caro and to the Chamber are (back row,

Ryan Savoie is an Aflac agent
who is just getting started
serving our community. The last
two years as an Aflac agent, he
has been helping families get
the peace of mind that if something was to happen, such as an
accident or sickness, their
everyday living expenses would
be taken care of - things like
rent, car payments, child care,
groceries, and transportation costs. Ryan says Aflac is
different from what most people think of as insurance.
Instead of paying the hospital or doctor, Aflac pays the
policy holder directly. A person can pick and choose
which policy is best for them so they don’t have to pay for
things they don’t need or want. Ryan will work with
businesses to help reduce the pressure and expectation of
company-paid benefits and broaden the company’s benefit
package without changing what is currently offered with
no direct cost to the business owner.
If you are interested in learning more about Aflac call
Ryan at 989-325-0739 to arrange a 15-20 minute
informative meeting to get to know how Aflac can help
you and your family and your employees and their
families. Ryan says he is excited to be in a community
where so many people care about each other.
In the May/June newsletter we welcomed Continental

Mertz Road (M-24) where
Country

was previously located.
Harry Schemer says his
store is “. . . one of the
biggest sports card stores
in Michigan . . . there are millions of cards here.” He also sells
coins, stamps, old records, flags, and pretty much anything relating
to sports. Mr. Schemer is a wealth of knowledge about sports and
is fun and honest. The store is open Tuesday - Friday from 11
a.m.- 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Be sure to stop in soon.
Guaranteed, whether you like sports and collectibles or not, you

been in auto repair business
since the 1980s. In October of
2009, Bill Stewart bought the

be contacted at 989-673-3808.
We welcome the new business
New Light Child & Family
Institute, a subsidiary of New
Life Consultants, to Caro and to
the Chamber. New Light
Consultants was founded in 1998
to provide home-based mental
health and substance abuse
counseling to individuals and
families who had a need or a
desire to receive treatment in their home. This removes the
barriers of transportation and conventional business hours. The
Mission of New Life Consultants, Inc. is to “strengthen
individuals, families and communities through education,
advocacy and family-centered treatment.” They are a licensed
substance abuse agency with the State of Michigan, as well as, a
licensed Child Care Placement agency. They do Individual and
Family Counseling, Substance Abuse Treatment, Psychiatric
Consultation, Foster Care Placement, Adoption Services,
and Education and Prevention Services. All services are
provided with 3 basic ideas: Always care about each
consumer’s/family’s needs, Always provide quality
treatment, and Always remain cost-effective. They say,
“Success Starts With Hope,” and New Light is “Where
Hope Begins!” They have an office at 8361 Ellis Road in
Millington, and have recently opened a Caro office at 852
South Hooper Street, Suite 6. Dr. Linda Hesson is the Caro
Office Coordinator and can be reached at 989-672-0784.
ABOUT OUR BUSINESSES
Town & Country Bridal
Laura Polega says, “Town & Country Bridal has been my
home away from home for the past fifteen years, and it has
truly been a wonderful place to be. The time has come to
bid my farewell to Town & Country Bridal. I will have so
many wonderful memories and friendships to take with me
as I begin a new chapter in my life. With that, I would like
to take this opportunity to introduce Joei Spaulding as the
new owner and operator of Town & Country Bridal, in
downtown Caro. Joei can be seen at the shop on a regular
basis as of July 12, 2010, and is eagerly learning all that
the bridal business entails. Joei has kept all of the current
employees on staff which is a very positive part of the
transition. It is so helpful to have business running as usual
and very comforting for me to be leaving a business that I
built from the ground up in good hands.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the
people that have helped me run a successful business for
15 years and wish Joei and her staff many more years of
success in the bridal business.”
Josephine (Joei) Spaulding says, “I am a graduate of Caro
High School. I moved out of state after graduation. I
traveled & worked in several states in the
telecommunications industry for five years. I moved back
to Michigan in 2002, and continued to work in the
telecommunications industry for another seven years. I got
married in the fall of 2009. This spring the opportunity
presented itself for my husband and me to purchase the
bridal salon in Caro. We were excited about the
opportunity for me to work closer to home, especially in
the downtown area. Town & Country Bridal will continue
with the tradition of a family-owned business in downtown
Caro. I am excited to keep the same knowledgeable staff
with over 20 years of combined experience in the bridal
industry. We will continue to provide our customers with a
full-service salon offering a variety of products and
services. We sell bridal gowns and accessories (jewelry,
tiaras, veils, and headpieces), mother’s gowns, bridesmaid
and flower girl dresses, and shoes. We also offer tuxedo
rentals, gown preservation, and alterations.
“I want to thank everyone that has been kind and
welcoming to me as a new business owner. I look forward
to many years of business in the downtown Caro area.”

ABOUT OUR BUSINESSES

Caro Big Boy Restaurant
The Caro Big Boy Restaurant is getting
a facelift! If all goes as planned, owners
Rich & Dawn Tinsey are anticipating a
finished facade by the second week of
August. The facade will consist of red
and white checks, as well as a neon “Big
Boy” sign. In addition to a new facade,
the interior of the restaurant has recently
been repainted, donning a variety of
colors, and an “Ohhh Boy!” canopy over
the entire wait aisle. The new look has
been a welcoming draw for customers.
Super Saver Discount Grocery
The Super Saver Discount Grocery will
be temporarily closing their doors at
1103 West Sanilac Road on July 31,
2010. They are in the process of
relocating to the City of Caro and will be
announcing their new location in the
near future. Marcia Weilbach wishes to
thank everyone for their business and
will appreciate your patience during the
move. She is looking forward to seeing
everyone when they reopen.
“Greater love hath no man than to lay
down his life for his friend.” That is
what changing things in this state will
require: men and women laying down
their own goals and dreams to fight to
create a better place for others who
come after them. When men of
principle are not willing to stand and
fight for the rights we are losing, who
are we left with to lead us?”—Todd
Courser

The Caro Chamber of
Commerce and the Caro
Downtown Task Force are
pleased to announce the
date of their 2010 Annual
Chicken Dinner. The event,
which is a fundraiser for the Caro
Chamber of Commerce, will take
place on Friday, September 17, 2010,
from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the
American Legion – Post 7 on Frank
Street in downtown Caro.
Although the attendance wasn’t what we
hoped for, the businesses with booths
were pleased with the contacts they were
able to make with job possibilities and
new customers. Each business
participating donated gifts for drawings
that were done during the afternoon and
evening. Many of the attendees won
very nice prizes. Mix 92.1/WKYO was
on site with a remote. Deano’s on the
Road and Pott’s Pit were present with a
delicious variety of food.
“Our annual event is the perfect way
to end your work week and spend
quality time with your family with a
nice meal,” said Christine Trisch,
Event Coordinator/Administrator of
Heritage Hill in Caro. “Whether you
dine in with the family or grab take
out for yourself, you can easily enjoy a
delicious home-cooked meal at a price
you can afford.”
In the closing hour, most participants
were stating they are looking forward to
next year’s event and many were asking
for their same locations again. To make
attendance easier for businesses wishing
to have a booth and for better customer
attendance, we have set the date in May
for next year. We will let you know in
the next newsletter if we have the final
date approved.

together to upgrade the sound system
downtown. The installation of the new
speakers and other equipment has
recently been completed by Richard’s

able to make announcements during
events as well as at other times. The
DDA has a contract with Sirius Satellite
Radio for the music that will be played.
Meal tickets continue to be only $7
and can be purchased in advance or at
the door. Each meal includes half a
chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, roll
and drink. Sorry, no senior or children
discounts are available.
To purchase meal tickets in advance,
stop by one of the following Caro
businesses: Caro Chamber of
Commerce, State Farm, Centennial

Proceeds from the dinner support the
ongoing efforts of the Caro Chamber
of Commerce and the Caro Downtown
Take Force to promote, beautify and
finance projects in Caro, which
attract new visitors and customers to
the area and support economic
development.
Our Vision: “Our vision is to be the

presence in the community by organizing or assisting in activities that benefit
the citizens and the business sector. The
Chamber actively engages our members
to be involved in the community and
provides opportunities to socialize,

The Caro Farmers Market
needs your help. We have
been entered in a nationwide contest for America’s
Favorite Farmers Market.
American Farmland Trust
is trying to promote local farms and food
and is offering a $3,000 marketing
promotion tool for the top farmers
market in each of the four categories
depending on the size of the markets.
This contest runs thru the end of August
2010, but we need your vote. Go online
to www.farmland.org/vote and help the
Caro Farmers Market.
While at the farmers market, stop and
visit your Downtown Merchants and
take advantage of the many summer
activities available. Hope everyone has
a safe and fun summer.
ROAD RALLY RETURNS
Due to popular demand, the
Chamber is resurrecting the Road
Rally this fall. This year’s sequel
is themed around “Horrorwood” –
well-known chillers and thrillers that
have frightened their way into American
culture. Each team (up to four people
per vehicle) will be provided with a set
of puzzles and clues that will lead them
to area businesses for resolution. A
movie trivia background is not necessary
to succeed, just a desire to have fun
while maintaining a keen competitive
edge.
Mandy Board (Goodwill), Wendy Jacot
(HDC), Len Jensen (Thumb Cellular)
and Dr. Mark Strzelewicz (Caro
Veterinary Clinic) are organizing the
event and may be contacting members
for assistance and participation. This
gathering of souls is planned for the
afternoon of October 23rd with
accolades, awards and revelry extending
into the evening. Interested parties
should start formulating a team and a
team name . . . costumes optional. All
are welcome . . . owners and
employees . . . friends and family . . .
colleagues and complete strangers. Stay
tuned for further details.

AFTER HOURS
Don’t miss these evenings of fun,
refreshments, and networking with other businesses in the area!
In June, The Gardens at Grice’s hosted an After Hours
event in their newly remodeled building at 2560 Mertz
Road. They gave tours of their building and grounds.
They celebrated with a Grand Opening on July 15. If you
missed either of these events, feel free to stop in and see
their new business and their remodeled facilities.
A much-needed rain held off while Lasting Impressions,
466 Ellington Street, hosted the July After Hours picnic
style. It was a
great time to
network!

An Open Letter to all who helped with the Cars, Crafts & Bike Event:
I have been the Executive Director of the Caro Chamber of Commerce for over 3 years, and the more people I meet the
more I am impressed with the many good and caring people in Caro. At the recent 21st Annual Cars, Crafts & Bike event,
so many people worked, many of them volunteering their time, to make Caro “a great place to live, work, shop and play.”
There are so many people to thank. I would first like to thank Pat Curtis from Pat Curtis Chevrolet Cadillac in Caro and
Pat Curtis Dodge Chrysler in Cass City for again so graciously sponsoring the event. We also thank Pat Curtis’s staff for
parking and judging the Car Show vehicles, as well as presenting the trophies. We also thank Len Jensen and Chamber
Director Mark Ransford for registering the car show entrants.
Those who sponsored trophies for the car show are: Aflac – Jerry Thorpe, Tuscola County Advertiser, Brentwood
Graphics, Brentwood Lanes, Caro Centre, Caro Veterinary Clinic, Chemical Bank, Collon Funeral Home, Galaxy Office
Supply, Heritage Hill, Hungry Howie’s, Independent Bank, Kwik-Start Towing, Majestic Sky Link, McDonalds, Michael
S. Misko, DDS, Mix 92.1, Moore Motors, Muffler Man, Osentoski Realty & Auctioneering, Pat Curtis ChevroletCadillac, Ransford Funeral Home, S & B Auto & Truck Repair, Starbrite Restaurant & Coney, State Farm – Laura Crase
Agency, Stephens & Moore, Thumb Cellular, Team One Credit Union, Triple R Collision, and Wal-Mart.
An event could not happen in Caro without the selfless service of Charlie Sunblad and the DPW crew, Police Chief Brian
Newcomb and his officers, and Dave Mattlin and the Fire Department. They are heroes of our city and we are so thankful
for them.
I want to thank Dr. Carol Starling of Star Vision Center, Liz Crafton of Fast Eddy’z , and Tina Ruschke of Tina’s Corner
Café for sponsoring the coffee and pastries for the Family Life Radio Remote that kicked off the event on Friday morning.
Chamber members who donated items for the station to give away during the event are: Caro Veterinary Clinic, Heritage
Hill, Moore Motors, Team One Credit Union, ServePro, The Fowler Center, White Chiropractic Health Center, and Paran
Management Co. – Caro Centre stores and Sugarcreek Plaza stores. Moore Motors also provided a new Challenger during
the remote for viewing pleasure. And, we thank the Family Life Radio crew for doing a great job promoting our city.
Big “thank yous” go to:
• Car Show entrants, Bike Show entrants and craft vendors. We couldn’t have the event without you!
• The 12 vendors who supplied the delicious variety of food and Tina Ruschke for helping our Directors organize
the food vendors.
• State Farm Agent Laura Crase for overseeing the Treasure Sales, all those in the community who had a sale, and
Real Estate One – Caro for sponsoring the Treasure Sales.
• The North Oaks Corvette Club for stopping by our city to visit and letting us enjoy their prize vehicles. They were
a delightful group of people and we want to invite them back again next year for our Car Show.
• Chamber Director Meggen Jensen, Karen Urban and Randy Wale for planning and running the Bike Show, Iron
Horse Bar & Grill and Thumb Motorcycle Chrome for sponsoring the show, and Ken Gainforth for the Blessing
of the Bikes.
• Joddy Ehrenberg and Danielle Dickson organizing and overseeing the crafters.
