Specialty Equine Center Creates Flexibility
Coosa Valley Equine Center
A RADinfo SYSTEMS Success Story
Specialty Equine Center Creates Flexibility, Faster
Response Times with RADinfo SYSTEMS' Veterinary PACS
Practice Overview
Coosa Valley Equine Center was founded in 1987 by Dr. Murray in Pell City, Alabama, starting
as a three-veterinary ambulatory practice. It has evolved into a 24-hour full-service referral clinic
for both medical and surgical cases (emergency cases are seen at any time), with anywhere
from four to seven on staff veterinarians and five veterinary assistants, among others.

Coosa Valley Equine Center Overview
Pell City, Alabama
Coosa Valley Equine Center is the only 100% equine center in the state of Alabama, seeing
approximately 4,000 cases per year. The practice covers anything from lameness, surgery
(orthopedics and soft tissue), reproduction, medicine, and ambulatory issues. Their main goal is
to get performance horses back into the working environment quickly, and they receive horses
from all across the country.
The practice's facility is state-of-the-art, consisting of a two-story clinic which includes a surgery
suite, induction/recovery room, an intensive care stall, examination room, digital radiograph
evaluation area, central pharmacy, and two in-house laboratories. Three hospital barns and two
seperate functioning isolation barns allow approximately thirty-four horses to be hospitalized for
treatment and care. The third hospital barn also operates as a reproduction facility with attached
laboratory. A covered arena consisting of a round pen, two trot tracks, farrier station and
podiatry center offers an all weather lameness area. The practice focuses on lame horses,
orthopedics and podiatry, and performs many radiographs and surgeries.
Why Digital?
Coosa Valley Equine Center saw the need for digital processing, as processing with film was
time-consuming, and quality was poor. Working with film also created a large backlog.
"The PACS system for surgery is ideal because the doctor can
shoot the X-ray while in surgery, have it processed, and
immediately view it on the viewing screen in surgery. This not
only cuts down on time to have the image pushed right to the
surgery suite, but also creates a more sterile environment."

Why RADinfo Systems?
Coosa Valley Equine Center started working with RADinfo SYSTEMS five years ago, when they
purchased their first digital products, Power Archive and a Fuji CR. The Power Archive product
enabled them to archive images to CD and then burn them. Coosa Valley has since outgrown
this solution; when they recently decided to go completely digital, they had to select a PACS
provider. They chose RADinfo Systems’ PACS solution, Micro PowerPACS Veterinary.
Jim Bishop, Facilities Manager
at the RSVS Dual Diagnostic Viewer
Their decision was partly based on the company’s proven commitment to a quality product and
outstanding service. The MPP Veterinary product enabled the practice to view processed
images at different viewing stations, freeing up the Fuji processor. They are now able to view
images in surgery, process additional images, and view them in a separate area, which they
were unable to do before. Digital radiography allows the veterinarians to manipulate and
enhance images for more informed evaluations; for example, the Measurement tools are
essential for evaluation before surgery, to ensure that each operation is successful and precise
to the millimeter.
"One of the most valuable parts of the system that the Vets found was to
be able to show the trainer and owners the progression or regression
that has been made with a side-by-side comparison on the dual screen
monitors."
- Jim Bishop, Facilities Manager and PACS Coordinator
Empowering the Organization with MicroPower PACS (MPP) Veterinary
Jim Bishop, Facilities Manager, had the following comments about the RADinfo SYSTEMS
solution: “One of the most valuable parts of the system that the Vets found was to be able to
show the trainer and owners the progression or regression that has been made with a sideby-side comparison on the dual screen monitors.” The RADinfo SYSTEMS PACS system with
dual color monitors enables them to view patient images clearly on any digital workstation,
and understand what exactly is wrong with the patient, after a complete diagnosis conducted
by the Vet.
Another benefit of the MPP Vet product is for surgery. Dr. Jody Wagner, Chief Surgeon for
Coosa Valley, comments, “The PACS system for surgery is ideal because the doctor can
shoot the x-ray while in surgery, have it processed and immediately view it on the viewing
screen in surgery. This not only cuts down on time to have the image pushed right to the
surgery suite, but also creates a more sterile environment.”

Coosa Valley also chose to add DICOMmail to the MPP Vet product. Jim Bishop states, “The
DICOMmail increased our turnaround ten-fold by being able to email the image and cutting
out a day of shipping.” DICOMmail enables the Vets to email images to referring doctors and
specialists. This feature widely enhanced their ability to quickly involve other consultants,
when necessary, and eliminated the wait time of having to burn and Fed-Ex a CD.
In closing, Jim commented, “I would recommend RADinfo Systems to anyone considering a
Veterinary PACS product. The service over the last 5 years has been outstanding, and the
product has worked wonders for us.”
Coosa Valley Equine Center is very pleased with the product and would strongly recommend
it to any veterinary practice considering using a comprehensive digital solution.
RADinfo SYSTEMS MicroPower PACS (MPP) Veterinary solution provides the veterinarian
with a radiographic image that can be viewed immediately on a high-resolution monitor
without need for film development. The MPP Veterinary solution also offers sophisticated
image processing tools, giving the veterinarian a much greater depth of information that can
be enlarged or manipulated for far better detail. Images can be stored and archived for future
evaluation using the RADinfo SYSTEMS data archive system (PowerPACS Archive), which is
based on DICOM 3.0 standards used by hospitals and clinics around the world.
